To the Editor,

I am writing in support of Clint

Baddeley in the upcoming local Body

Elections.

I have known Clint for 30+ years

and have been very happy having him

represent myself and my family as the

Ward Councilor for Raglan.

He has had enough experience with

the Raglan community to professionally

oversee the improvements and changes

that are proposed in this beautiful

environment we are blessed to live

in, but in a way that still preserves the

identity of Raglan as we know it.

Clint is always approachable and

accessible to discuss openly & fairly

any issues people may have.

He is also supportive of all the

varying groups within the community

and is very passionate about the

wellbeing of Raglan & its surrounding

rural areas.

Chris Leuthart, Raglan

Dear Editor

At the ‘meet-the-candidates’ event

on Saturday I found the response to the

question about water meters puzzling.

It was answered by Cr Clint Baddeley

who said water meters were needed to

avoid the risk of excess consumption

lowering the aquifer, thus allowing salt

water to get into our water supply.

This is a problem in areas such as

Canterbury, but Raglan’s water comes

from a spring some 20 metres above sea

level and 400 metres from the creek.

strongly come rain or drought. The only

to the water tower.

Chair of the Community Board,

Rodger Gallagher, is now asking for

a copy of the report Cr Baddeley was

referring to. I’ll be interested to see what

relevance salt water has to explaining

meters in Raglan. If there’s no other

explanation, why is so much being

spent? Why have our water rates risen

12% this year, with a similar increase

planned next year?

Regards

John Lawson, Raglan

To the Editor,

We would like to send a letter of

thanks to the outgoing Community

Board for their hard work on behalf of

our community.

Their role is generally a thankless

one and the work they do goes largely

unremarked and rarely applauded by

the majority but we are aware of the

considerable time that is involved

in carrying out their duties and offer

our thanks. Rodger Gallagher has, in

our opinion, been an outstanding and

hugely dedicated Chair. His oversight

and attention to detail has been

remarkable and will be sorely missed.

Thank you Rodger and all the members

for your work and we also extend our

best wishes to the incoming Board.

Water, water everywhere as storm lashes Raglan

Thursday of last week was not a good time to be delivering mail or circulars around Raglan, with letterboxes presenting as

many water hazards as a Florida golf course after the biggest deluge many longtime locals can recall. The big wet – part of a violent storm that swept

of town, turned streams into raging torrents and left Whaingaroa Harbour a muddy brown for days afterwards. One of the worst affected areas was Wainui Bush

Park where the usually sedate, meandering stream became a wall of water that ripped out newly planted trees and scoured out low-lying undergrowth. Friends of Wainui Reserve volunteers recovered and replanted the young trees.Further downstream, Whaingaroa Harbour Care

staff moved saplings in their nursery to higher ground to avoid a repeat of an incident a couple of months previously when they lost a large number of

Store donation box helps out when chips are downA donation box on the counter of Te Kopua Camp Store, containing more than $300 by the start of the season, meant four more children got to play in Raglan Junior Soccer Club this year – and that made life a whole lot easier for those parents with a few kids playing the game. But that’s what community is all about, says Jo

Thompson who’s run her takeaway business at the domain for more than seven years now. Determined to keep the donation box going,

she’s convinced the cause makes people give a little bit more. And when nearby campers come to buy an onion, for instance, to cook dinner in their caravan, they’re happy at Jo’s suggestion they make a donation rather than pay her across the counter. “One lady gave $4 for an onion!” she recalls. Jo’s even had the odd parent come and thank her

for sponsoring their child. “But you don’t do it for recompense, do you … it’s just what you do when you’re in a community.”And the weekly ‘Player of the Day’ meal

vouchers, one for each local team playing Saturdays at Kopua domain, have been coming from the camp store for years now. It’s actually part of Jo’s contract, she reveals, “but I would’ve done it anyway”.

employed at the shop. “Every local I’ve had has been absolutely brilliant,” Jo enthuses. She believes the experience gives

them a starting point in the working world, in a safe environment with good pay and lieu days when needed.

And what if Kopua domain gets that big sports complex built on it, right where Jo’s Takeaways is sited amid

Re-elect Allan Sanson

WAIKATO DISTRICT COUNCIL

FOR MAYOR

Authorised by Allan Sanson, 540 Hetherington Road, Huntly.

I am seeking your support for re-election as your Mayor. The last three years have been busy in and around Raglan with the opening of a new Footbridge, new Museum/Information Centre, with repairs to

Library. There have also been a number of utility upgrades around Raglan. Raglan is a very iconic destination with a number of tourist operators that myself and Council have supported and will continue to support. There are also a number of projects that Council is working on at the moment for Raglan including the Whaanga Coast Wastewater.

Consultation is an ongoing process, and we

process. Last year I implemented the opportunity for Community Board Chairs or their delegate to participate in Council workshops and Committee meetings. This has given the Community Board a chance to have a hands on approach to decision making and they have taken that up on many occasions. I will continue to work closely with your Ward Councillor and Community Board for the next three years. As your Mayor I have and will continue to be assessable to all ratepayers.

Raglan Junior Soccer Club Prizegiving 2013On Saturday 7th September, Raglan Junior Soccer held their Prizegiving at Raglan Area School Hall. This marked the end of another successful season for the club which continues to grow. Many of the new players were in the

under 6 age group but last year’s all-girls team, the Dolphins, also inspired heaps more girls to join leading to the development of a second all-girls team along with another being a 50/50 split between boys and girls. We also had 4 players, Adi-Grace Mooar, Jet Hughes, Levi White and Jordan Breckon-Mooar, who successfully trialled for Waikato Reps this season.RJS would like to thank all the

coaches, managers and parents helpers, all of whom contribute to the success of the club. We would also like to thank Jo from the Campground Store for her tremendous support of providing Player of the Day for all of our teams, sponsoring 4 children to play soccer this season and for generally looking after the club and its members. We would also like to thank Raglan Area School for allowing us to use the school hall on occasion

club’s team photos. Also we would like to thank the Nautilius Foundation, Ray White and the Community Board for their help with the club’s new jerseys. Lastly we’d also like to thank Waikato District Council for the work they have

this year.

One family have done extremely well with all 3 boys taking the Best All Rounder awards for their respective teams, Dekan Papa (age 4), Tukiri Papa (age 5) and Duran Wipani (age 9). Well done boys! Dekan, Tukiri and Duran are following their Mum’s talent and love of football. Vikki played football from a young age and played for the Waikato Women’s team and at national level for some time. At that time female soccer players were almost frowned upon so she is pleased to see so many young girls playing now. This year the award for ‘Most

Successful Team’ of the season is a tie and is shared between the 7th Grade Stingrays team and the Open Grade Bullsharks team. The Silver Cup will be on display at Jo’s Camp Store for all to see. Congrats to the Stingrays and Bullsharks.Coach Johnny Regnier is celebrating

the Bullsharks success this season by taking the team on a trip to Wellington to see the All Whites play in November. They need to raise a bit of cash to help them get there so please look out for their fundraising activities around town. Some of the teams have one more 5 a

side tournament to attend this weekend, 21/22 September – so good luck to all those participating. We look forward to seeing our

existing players again next season and also to welcoming new players in 2014. Watch this space for muster details early next year.

Raglan residents reassuredWaikato District Council is reassuring Raglan residents that its wastewater treatment plant is more than capable of handling current, and future, wastewater activity.

At September’s Raglan Community Board meeting, committee members raised concerns of an increasing community perception regarding the plant’s ability to cope with increased activity, particularly from development in the area and Whaanga Coast joining the network.

Waikato District Council General Manager Service Delivery, Tim Harty, says Council appreciates and understands the concerns expressed by the community

“The Raglan wastewater treatment plant is more than capable of handling an increase in wastewater and

around half of the maximum capacity allowed.” “The plant is designed to cope with busy periods

and future growth in the community while maintaining compliance with the conditions of the consent.”

An independent review released earlier this month

discharge pumps to start operating and a lack of alarms in the event of a pump failure.

‘Christmas in the Park’ coming for 2013 - with your help‘Christmas in the Park’ is coming to Raglan again this summer. The event will be run at the Te Kopua Domain on Sunday Dec 8th from 5.00p.m. until approx 9.00p.m. The event, as in previous years, will be free to the public. We will start with a children’s

carnival type programme with a visit by Santa and some carols for the children. Our main stage programme will include a mixture of local and outside acts with our headline act being Late 80’s Mercedes and Prestige Dance crew - a top Hip Hop dance crew. As you will be aware this event

costs money to put on and while we have

Raglan revealed last Saturday what Residents and Ratepayers Association president Bob MacLeod termed “its usual apathetic self” over local elections, with fewer than 30 people turning out to the association’s meet-the-candidates meeting at the town hall. But those who did make the effort – and

they were almost entirely the grey brigade – would have come away from the near two-hour talkfest better informed than most in the community on who they should vote for as their Raglan ward councillor. And that’s nothing to sneeze at considering

the traditionally low vote and that the winning margin in the ward councillor race last time around was only 23-odd votes.Saturday morning’s meeting saw ward

candidates Alan Vink and Clint Baddeley separated at the top table by new community board member Jon Taylor, who doesn’t need

And while a second candidates table at the front sat empty, current Waikato district mayor Allan Sanson and mayoral challenger Noel Smith regularly chipped in from the audience with their views on Raglan issues. It was a meeting which had its moments,

with Alan clearly bristling at one stage during question time and Clint, the sitting councillor, showing his annoyance at repeated questions over two issues. The meeting began with Alan promising

a fresh perspective – his campaign slogan – that is all about attentive listening and good consultation to produce good outcomes for the community, while Clint in his opening remarks emphasised all that he’d achieved for Raglan in nine years of hard work and said his simple philosophy was “to get things done”.Then it was time for meeting moderator

Peter Storey to put a string of prepared questions to the pair, and anyone who thought they’d all be of the patsy variety – with the answers well rehearsed – soon found out otherwise. When questions turned to how the

candidates felt about Raglan being promoted as a venue for same-sex weddings, it began to feel there had been something of a question-time hijack by one or two locals with personal agendas. But neither candidate saw a problem with

it. Clint meanwhile showed his annoyance at

repeated questioning from council watchdog John Lawson on bus services – retorting at one point that “buses every quarter hour is ridiculous” – and on why the council was

going to discuss the Rangitaha peninsula housing issue this week with the public excluded.Clint and the two mayoral candidates

would not be drawn on the plan’s merits – even though Clint acknowledged he had sought the community’s views, and felt the zone change application should be handled by independent commissioners. However they all stressed it

was good the matter was out of the Environment Court’s hands and instead with the council where it would be

consulted. For his part Alan was happy to reveal

he was for the development in principle, saying it was a well-planned project by

a very good sustainability-conscious developer.Other questions revealed minor

differences between the pair on freedom camping and handling of the recycling contract but broad agreement on the need for a structure plan and the current liquor ban. In wrapping up Clint reiterated his

“one agenda, to get a few things done” and Alan promised a different style of representation where he’d work hard at bringing opposing viewpoints to agreement.

It’s hard to believe that the Raglan Junior Rugby Club season is over. It is even harder to believe there were no games cancelled due to extremely wet weather. Raglan Junior Rugby has had a very successful season with 9 teams and 144 registered players. Each and every player deserves a pat on

the back – you have all made us very proud. Congratulations to the 13 talented

players who made various Representative Teams;; Tom Wallace, Makoare Mataira, Kyden Waitere, Kane Roberts, Salvador Cotterill-Nagels, Wikiriwhi Rangiawha, Ryan Larkin, Luka Benseman, Jake O’Brien, Sea Reily, Te Kaha Broadbent-King, Cory Gabolinscy & Mattheus Pio. The boys have played an enormous

To the Editor,I am pleased to receive a letter from the CEO

of the Waikato District Council (WDC) regarding my submission to the Waikato District Council’s draft second year of their Long Term Plan (LTP) “also known as the 2013/2014 Annual Plan.” My submission noted that, having been present at the various consultations for the LTP as the Raglan Councillor 2001-2004, I was dismayed to read online from the WDC site that, at a meeting of the Finance Committee chaired by the present Raglan Councillor Clint Baddeley regarding a large proposed “private plan” housing development in Raglan which could double the present population, the Chairman of the Community Board and community advocate John Lawson were excluded. I found this totally unacceptable, from both a political and ethical viewpoint, and am surprised that WDC Mayor Sanson allowed it. I hope that voters will take these behaviours into account in their voting intentions for the coming Local Body elections. To quote his letter to me, the CEO of Waikato

District Council says that: “Waikato District Council is working towards greater transparency and improved consultation. We want to be able to utilise legislative processes so that they enhance participation and we want to be able to engage with our communities more effectively, consistently and as early as possible in a less formal and more relevant way. In order for us to implement and improve our consultation methods we are currently developing a Community Engagement Strategy, which is being developed with the support of community representatives.”If this means excluding the Chairman of the

Raglan Community Board from a meeting concerning a resource management development of fundamental importance to its local community and chaired by its own Ward Councillor, I wonder what the rest of this statement implies, given that the WDC has recently made redundant about 20 staff at a cost to ratepayers (one assumes) of $1m, according to press reports.Bring on the elections!SincerelyDr Lesley Syme, Raglan Ward Councillor 2001-

MY MISSING DOGIt has now been one month since our

beloved dog went missing in a thunder storm at Te Mata. I’m still asking for any

information regarding his disappearance. If you know if he is dead or alive please contact me or even anonymously let me know. With the passage of time we are

becoming less hopeful that he is still alive but the not knowing is taking a big toll on

us. Someone out there must know what has happened to him or where he is.

I’M OFFERING A $500 REWARD FOR HIS RETURN OR INFORMATIOM
