Sam's Club Fridley donated $20,000 to Twin Cities North

Chamber of Commerce as the result of a campaign held during

National Small Business Week. The contributions were presented

Aug. 23, and will be used by the chamber office to fund a teaching

and training program to enhance small business success in the

Twin Cities.

The national campaign resulted in 11 local donations across the

nation, which were determined by the number of volunteer hours

logged by club managers working in small businesses in their communities. Club

Manager Brad Flayton and his associates earned the right to award one of the

donations in the Twin Cities.

Flayton started his career with Sam's Club 18 years ago as a part-time cashier at

Sam's Club 6320 in Duluth. Flayton and his fellow associates led the market in

raising more than $32,000 for local organizations, since Flayton's arrival at the

Fridley Club just 14 months ago.

"We are proud to add this $20,000 to our community for small business

resources," Flayton said. "This brings our local philanthropic total to more than

$52,000, supporting service organizations including Children's Miracle Network,

Children's Safety Center, Live Strong and Susan G. Komen."

Members of the chamber and the leadership team from Sam's Club attended the

check presentation at the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce office at 525

Main St., Ste. 200, in New Brighton.

Tim Roche, president and CEO of Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce said

the chamber's primary goal is to improve the business climate in the northern

Twin Cities. The grant will allow the chamber to provide in-house resources to

small business entrepreneurs, offering tools for teaching, training and networking.

"Our vision is of a kiosk in the chamber office that will collate information from

resources such as the Small Business Administration, the Minnesota Department

of Employment and Economic Development and local libraries. With this

information, and increased chamber staff knowledge, local small businesses

will have another tool to help them become even more successful," Roche said.

An organization aimed at attracting businesses to the Twin Cities has hired Gene Goddard to coordinate new business investment projects.

A regional economic development organization with plans to attract jobs and develop a brand for the Twin Cities has found a brand of its own: Greater MSP.

And it has added Gene Goddard—who spent two decades with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED)—to its staff. He began his new job at Greater MSP on Monday.

The organization, which launched this spring, said that Goddard will “lead the coordination of new business investment projects” for the Twin Cities by working with business leaders, consultants, and corporate real estate managers seeking locations for businesses to set up shop in the area.

Goddard previously worked in DEED’s Business Development Office, spending the last five years as statewide manager of high-value business arrangements.

The Itasca Project—a conglomeration of about 60 CEOs from across the state, public-sector officials, and leaders from area foundations—unveiled plans in September to fundraise for the new initiative, which was formerly called the Minneapolis Saint Paul Regional Economic Development Partnership.

The Itasca Project conducted research that indicated that the Twin Cities lack a centralized regional structure for developing a brand for the area. It found that the area’s largest companies provide a great foundation for the region, but the relatively high cost of doing business in the area and “a culture that does not value entrepreneurs as strongly as other regions” has prevented the Twin Cities from attracting jobs.

Greater MSP aims to bolster local economic development by marketing the region in an attempt to attract new businesses, retain and expand existing businesses, and connect companies with local resources and incentives, among other efforts.

In March, the group announced the appointment of its first CEO, selecting Michael Langley to take the helm of the new organization. —Jake Anderson ([email protected])
