Vredenheim gee terugDIE Vredenheim-landgoed het hul deel virdie gemeenskap gedoen deur ’n winterdansas fondsinsamelingsprojek vir Huis Molen-hof te hou.

Volgens Charalta Bruwer van Vredenheimhet hulle besluit op Huis Molenhof aangesiendie inwoners op staatspensioene van omtrentR1 200 per maand aangewese is.“Hulle moet dan R450 vir huur betaal en met

die geld wat oor is, kos en krag aanskaf. Daaris ongeveer 40 inwoners in die selfsorgeenhe-de.”

Nic Stevens was die gaskunstenaar by diewinterdans wat die gaste wat tot laataand ge-dans het, terdeë geniet het.“Ons het ook twee bottels 3F-wyn opgeveil as

deel van die fondsinsameling.”Vredenheim het ’n tjek van altesame R8 500

aan Huis Molenhof oorhandig, tesame met ’ndonasie van kruideniersware. Hulle beoog omlater in die jaar weer iets aan te pak om hierdieorganisasie te help.Bruwer het Hudson’s restaurant bedank vir

grated• 5 spring onions, finely sliced• 30 ml grated Parmesan to serve• rocket, to serveMethodMelt the butter in a pan. Add the flour and

stir to form a roux. Remove from the heat andadd the milk a little at a time, stirring well toformaverythickwhitesauce.Returntotheheatand cook, stirring continuously, for five min-utes. Remove from the heat and stir to cool forfive minutes.

In a separate bowl, mix the eggs, cottagecheese, mustard and baking powder together.Season to taste.

Stir the eggmixture into thewhite saucewiththe Gruyère or cheddar and onions. Pour into

a greased ovenproof dish and bake in a preheat-ed oven for 30 minutes or until golden and thecentre is cooked. Sprinkle over the Parmesanwhile still hot.Rest for 10 minutes and serve with rocket.

Apply now to study at atertiary institution in 2013THERE are only a few weeks left before theapplications for admission to public highereducation institutions close.

It is important that matriculants use thistime to ensure they have good options opento them next year, an education expertwarns.

“In these last weeks before the applica-tions for admission to public institutionsclose, there is often an increasing feelingof anxiety,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Di-rector of the Independent Institute of Edu-cation. “School-leavers are nervous aboutthe decisions they need to make, and natu-rally question whether they are making theright choices.”

The Department of Higher Education re-cently launched the “Apply now!”-cam-paign, which seeks to avoid a repeat of thedesperation witnessed at the start of thecurrent academic year when thousands up-on thousands of young people had to beturned away from tertiary education insti-tutions, many of them because they failedto apply timeously.

) Plan B and why you should have one:“Matriculants are strongly advised to ap-ply to more than one institution and facul-ty, and to keep their minds wide open tothe less conventional options that will givethem direct and immediate access to thefast track to fulfilling their dreams.”

Coughlan says while most young peoplewill chase the university bachelor degreepass level as their goal, many will notachieve the required marks to qualify fortheir first choice of institution.

“It is very important that you not onlyplan for what you want, but also for the al-

ternative road you might take if you don’tget exactly what you planned for. That way,you won’t be short of choices or even com-pletely out of options come January.”

) Choosing the right route: Coughlan ad-vises parents to keep in mind that the lifebeing lived isnot theirs. “Justbecauseyourson or daughter qualifies for acceptance in-to, for instance,anengineeringormedicineprogramme,doesnotmeanthat this is theirchosen path or where they will find happi-ness and success.

“Your child is more likely to succeed bychoosing the right route for him or her,than the one everyone else would choose.”

) Many, many more quality optionsavailable now: “In addition to the 23 publicinstitutions, there is a strong private sectorwith 116 registered and accredited institu-tions which offer students meaningfulchoices in terms of where and what theystudy, and the environment in which theychoose to study.

“While degree study makes sense forsome, it is important to note that strong,high quality vocationally oriented Diplo-mas are associated with high levels of post-graduation employment, because they fo-cus on work ready skills and thus producegraduates who can add value to a companysoon after employment,” says Coughlan.

) Keep your options (and your mind)open: “When the doors to public institu-tions begin to close over the next month,there will still be many other quality op-tionsopentostudents,asmostprivateinsti-tutions have later closing dates for applica-tions with many accepting applications into February,” Coughlan concludes.

tration evening before the K-Way Platteklip Charity Chal-lenge. I’d seen him win theThree Peaks Challenge theyear before, so knew of hisability,” says Nick Bennett,marketing manager for K-Way.“When I chatted to him, I
