Hope for the futureThemajorityof lastyear’smatric-ulants are now settled in at uni-versities and colleges, have em-barked on a gap year abroad, orhave started looking for work.

But there are still a largenumber of school-leavers left inlimbo, matriculantswhosemarkswere not good enough to secure aplace at a higher education insti-tution or who have no clue howto tackle the year.

Unfortunately, not doing any-thing will almost certainly leadthese young people into a down-ward spiral from which they willstruggle to emerge.

Dr Anneka van den Hoek, aca-demic manager at the Independ-ent Institute of Education, SA’slargest and most accredited pri-vatehighereducationinstitution,says it is imperative that theseyoungsters take positive steps tomaketheiryearcountandrebuildtheir confidence.

“While you may feel dejected, failure only happens when youstop trying. Now is the time to bebrave and not let the year drag onany longer without putting a planinplace for constructive growth,”she says.

“The way to move on from this,is to find something that willagain boost your confidence, andallowyou toprove toyourself thatyou are able to work hard and im-prove on your past performance.

“Additionally, being successfulin this endeavour will improveyour chances of securing a spaceatapublicourprivatehigheredu-cation institution come 2015.”

Although admissions for thisyear have closed in both the pub-lic and private sector, there arestill options available for skills-boosting short courses or for reg-istering torepeat school level sub-jects, she says.

“What is important now, is thatyou choose something that willhelpyouwithyourapplicationforfulltime study next year, sochoose a course in line with yourultimate aspirations.

“Veryimportantly, takethisop-portunity to knuckle down andworkreallyhard, rebuildingyourconfidenceand instilling thekindof work ethic that will stand youin good stead in any future en-deavours.”

Van den Hoek says there are afew guidelines to follow to turnaround poor performance:

“The first thing to acknowledgeasastudent, whendiscouragedbypoor marks, is that the attitude

you have going forward will helpyou improve your marks. Failureshould not have a crippling effecton you. Instead, it should be a mo-tivating factor towards what youwant to achieve.

“Hence, improving your markswill require a change in attitudetowards failure.

“If you expect failure to crippleyou, it most likely will, but if youadopt apositive attitudeafter fail-ing, it will prompt you to do bet-ter.”

Van den Hoek says that whenstudying, students should ensurethat they have all the reading ma-terial to do well in their courseand must ask for help from teach-ers, lecturers or peers when theydon’t understand or experienceproblems with the subject con-tent.

“It isalsopivotal toset long-andshort-term achievable goals. Set-ting achievable goals ensures dis-ciplineandcontrolwhencomplet-ing tasks. This will help you im-prove your marks. Decidingwhich goals are more importantor time-sensitive in comparisonto others is also vital.

“You will also need to learnfrom past experiences and mis-takes by acknowledging what hasbeen hindering you from excel-ling.

“Some common factors includestress and poor time-manage-ment skills, among others. In or-dertodowell,youwillneedtodealwith these factors accordingly.”

VandenHoeksaysstudentscanseek professional counselling orcoaching to deal effectively withstress, and should always use adaily planner to manage timemore effectively.

“Another silent thief of time issocial networking. Do an honestevaluation of the time you spendmindlesslysurfing the internetorinteracting in a social context onthe internet. This time can beused more effectively.

“Studying hard and being de-termined is essential for you toachieve your goals. Unfortunate-ly, goodmarkswillnot comeover-night nor will they appear in avacuum.

“If your marks were not goodenough for you to progress as youwould have liked, you now havethe opportunity to request help ifneedbe, andimplement theneces-sary measures to succeed.

“Let yourpast failuresbe learn-ing curves rather than obstaclestowards your success.”

The per-formance is also aimed at establishing someintegration between the deaf and hearing, through a shared experience on and off thestage. The clowns portrayed three main charac-

and adults through performances in commu-nities affected by violence, disease, naturaldisasters and poverty.

Using physical comedy, music, storytellinganddance, theperformancesareofferedfreelyby professional artists from throughoutSouthern Africa to provide momentary reliefto large numbers of children and adults. The aim of the CWBSA performance pro-

Sou dit naastenby dieselfde effek ge-hadhet as hy gesê het “Ekhet ’n plan”?Ek glo nie. Om ’n droom te hê is net so-veel groter as wat dit is om ’n plan tehê. ’nMens verandermaklik van plan, maar’ndroomisbaiedieperinjouwesegewortel as enige plan.Hierdie is ’nbaiebelangrikeaspekas

Hy reken egter mense souons besighede meer geredelik onder-steunasons inonsbemarkingeerstensonsbesigheidsfilosofie, waardes of pas-sie met kliënte deel, eerder as om netop die produkte of dienste te fokus.Volgens Sinek is dit juis hierdie as-

dikwels hul hart volg in hul koop-be-

Wat is jou passie? As jy soos King eer-stens joudroomofpassiemet joukliën-te deel, is die kans goed dat hulle baiemeer geredelik ook jou produkte ofdienste sal koop.“But the proof of the pudding lies in
