Protect your allergic child at schoolSendingyour child off to schoolfor the very first time can be adaunting experience, but whenthat child has allergies, yourworry can be compounded.

A recent survey by Pharma Dy-namics (a genericpharmaceuticalcompany specialising in aller-gies), which involved 800 learnersbetween 10 and 18 years old andteachers from private and govern-ment schools across the country, foundthatnoneofthestudentsnorthe teachers knew what to do incase of a severe allergic attack, putting children’s lives at risk.

According to internationalstudies the incidence of anaphy-laxis (a serious allergic reactionthat israpid inonsetandmayevencause death) is on the increase.Figuresarescant forSouthAfrica, but a Western Cape-based allergyclinic which started a registry lastSeptember already reported 90cases in the region alone.

Mariska van Aswegen, spokesperson forPharma Dynamics says more and more casesare being reported worldwide of children dy-ing or suffering multiple heart attacks atschool following a major allergic attack.

“Almost all of these cases are accidental. It’sas simple as a teacher offering a child a treatfor good behaviour, without knowing aboutthe child’s nut allergy or realising that thetreat contains nuts or that it has been madein a factory where nuts are also handled.

“It isn’t onlynutsyouhave towatchout for,”sheremarks.“Childrencanhaveanaphylacticreactions to milk, eggs, soy, fish, wheat, cer-taininsectstingsandbitesandevensomemed-ication. Some are so sensitive that the mereresidue left on a toy from someone having eat-

en the allergen can send them to the hospitalwith a reaction.

“It is essential that when your child has aseriousandlife-threateningconditionlikethisto have a plan in place way ahead of time. Inmost cases, if an anaphylactic attack occursand is treated quickly with the appropriatemedication, such as an adrenaline auto-injec-tor (a medical device used to deliver a meas-ured dose of adrenaline), the outcomes aregood, but there are far too many cases that endup in tragedy,” says van Aswegen.

Governments from around the world are al-so taking steps to prevent allergy-relateddeaths at schools.

Most recently, a special panel of Japan’shealth ministry presented an interim report

containing guidelines on pre-venting death or illness due to al-lergies at schools. The panel wasformed after an 11-year-old girl, who was allergic to dairy prod-ucts, died of anaphylaxis aftershe ate a school lunch in Chofu,Tokyo.

To keep your child safe atschoolvanAswegenoffersthefol-lowing advice:

) Ensureyourchild’s school isfullyawareofhisorherallergies.

) Provide the school withemergency contact informationand clear procedures for han-dling medical issues.

) Explain the early warningsigns of an allergic attack to yourchild’s teachers so they can bealert to early symptoms.

) Provide the schoolwithmul-tiple adrenaline auto-injectors touse in case of anaphylaxis and besure to check the expiry date.Teachers should also be shownhow to administer the medica-

tion regularly.) Be sure that your child fully understands

his or her allergies and knows to what theycan and cannot eat or be exposed.

) Send special snacks and treats your childcan eat so he or she doesn’t feel left out on spe-cial occasions.

) Also consider getting a medical braceletfor your child to wear to school.

For guidelines on how to treat children suf-fering from an allergic attack or how to usean adrenaline auto-injector, parents andteachers can visit www.allergyexpert.co.za.

Dr Mike Levin, one of South Africa’s top al-lergists and advisor to Pharma Dynamics willalso be available to respond to any of your on-line allergy-related queries via the website.

Even if you pack lunch, there is no guarantee your allergic child will not accidentallyconsumedangerous foodsat school. Teachers shouldbe informedonhow to respondif your child has a severe allergic reaction.

Interestrate isgoodnews forsaversThe latestMonetaryPolicy Committee(MPC) announce-ment by GovernorGill Marcus saw therepo rate increasefrom 5% to 5,5%.Rates have re-

mained flat for justover 18 months andthe last MPC an-nouncement whichsaw an increase inthe repo rate, wasmore than five andahalf years ago. This is quite amo-

mentous occasionfor those saverswhowaited in anticipa-tion for a higher re-turn on their cashinvestments.“This increase,

however, bringswith it an increasein the cost of servic-ing debt, whichmeans that manySouth Africans willhave less disposableincome than be-fore,” said LezanneHuman,CEOofFNBSavings and Invest-ments.Don’t stop sav-

ingAlthough savers

willbeexcitedaboutthe increased re-turn on their cashinvestments, thehigher cost of serv-icing debt may re-sult in consumerscutting back ontheir savings.“Unfortunately,

saving for goals, such as your child’sschool fees and yourretirement, can’t bedelayed.“Consumers

should adjust theirbudget accordingly(however painfulthat may be in theshort term) to en-sure that they con-tinue to save forthese lifeevents thatwill inevitably hap-pen.“The good news is

that, while makingsacrifices by savingfor these goals, con-sumers are simulta-neously benefitingfrom higher returnson their cash invest-ments.”
