Safety first: crimeprevention tips for womenIT’s a disturbing reality thatwomen are more vulnerable tocrime, because many criminalsview women as soft targets. With August being Women’s
Month, ADT Security is offeringa number of tips to help womenstay safe.Rob Dale, managing director
of ADT Security Western Cape, says the key to safety is alwaysto err on the side of caution.“Tell someone where you are
going and the time you expect toreturn,” Dale advises.“Save to yourmobile phone or
memorise the details of the per-son to be contacted in the event
of an emergency.“Remember, lessismorewhen
it comes towearing flashy jewel-lery and carrying cash. Also, ifyou are taking a handbag, carryit close to your body and notdangling by the straps.”Dale goes on to warn against
the dangers of becomingdistracted.“Adistractedpersonisaneasy
target,” says Dale. “Oftenwomen have several things totake care of at once, and it’s vitalthat they remain alert at alltimes.“Be aware of people around
youwhen heading towards your
vehicle, especiallyatplacessuchas shopping centres and petrolstations. Ensure that you take amoment to check the street be-fore pulling into a driveway, beit your own or a friend’s.”If you are driving, Dale says
the first thing to do once you areinside your vehicle is ensurethat all the doors are locked.“Never drive with a handbag orany other valuable items on aseat or in the view of anyonelooking into your vehicle fromthe outside.“Try and make your car a
mobile-free zone,” Dale recom-mends, “so you can concentrate
on your surroundings and keep-ing you and your family safe.”Of utmost importance is to
trust your instincts.“Women have great intuition
and should listen to their in-stincts,” Dale says. “If someoneor somethingmakes you feel un-easy, avoid the individual andleave the area.”By following these precau-
tions, Dale says, women can de-velophighlyeffectivesafetyhab-its thatwill assist them in avoid-ing dangerous situations.“I encourage women not only
to use these tips, but to sharethem with family and friends.”

An easy sidefor any braaiSPOIL thewomen in your lifeby doing the cooking! Here isa recipe for an easy “paptert”to go with a braai thisWomen’s Day.
IngredientsPorridge1,5 L warm water500 g maize meal1 tbsp salt2 tbsp butter1 tsp dried sweet basilFilling2 packets bacon, diced3 tomatoes, peeled and
chopped1 large onion, finely
chopped1 punnetmushrooms,sliced4 cups cheddar cheese,
gratedFresh basil, chopped2 tbsp sugarSunfloweroilandbutter for
fryingSalt and pepper to tasteMethodPorridge) Pour the water into a big
pot; add salt, butter and sweetbasil, and mix.
) Add maize meal and stir(using warmwater instead ofboiling water helps to avoidlumps).
) Put the pot on a stoveplate set to low, cover with alid and cook for about anhour, stirring occasionally.Filling) Sauté the onion and ba-
con in sunflower oil and but-
ter until the onions are trans-lucent; add the mushrooms, then the tomato, sugar, saltand pepper.Putting it together) Coat a large oven dish
with non-stick spray. Spoonhalf theporridge into thedishandevenoutwithabig spoon.
) Spoon half the fillingover the porridge, evening itout again.
) Sprinkle half the fresh, chopped basil over, then halfthe grated cheese.
) Spoon the rest of the por-ridge over the filling. (Becareful not tomess up the fill-ing – if the porridge is toothick to comfortably spoonover, mix a little water intothe pot and stir until it’s fullyincorporated.)
) Once again, spoon overthe rest of the filling, finishwith the remaining basil andcheese, and grind a littleblackpepperover ifyouwant.
) Put the dish in a 180 °Coven for 15 to 20 minutes, oruntil the cheese has melted.
) Let the dish stand forabout 10 minutes before serv-ing; this will allow it to set.
NotesIt’s very important to get
the pap’s consistency right. Ifit’s runny, it won’t set easily– but you don’t want it toothick, either, because thismakes it hard to do the layersneatly. –www.food24.com

Save a life: become a donorTHE Organ Donor Foundation(ODF), through its Save SevenLives drive, would like to encour-age everybody to become organdonors this month.
In addition to being Women’sMonth, August is also celebrated asOrgan Donor Month.
One person can save as many asseven lives through becoming an or-gan donor. This includes the use ofone heart, two lungs, two kidneys, one liver and one pancreas.
The ODF would like to take thisawarenessdriveonestep further –by
encouraging everyone who signs upas an organ donor this month to tellseven more people about it.
The foundationwould like to reacha target of 10 000 registered organ do-nors this August.
There are over 4 300 peoplethroughout South Africa currentlyawaiting an organ transplant. Fewerthan 600 transplants are performedeach year, and many adults and chil-dren die waiting for a life-savingtransplant.
An even greater problem is the in-creasing number of people world-wide who die of end-stage organ fail-
ure. InSouthAfrica, thisnumbercanbeashighas thousandseverymonth. These are the unfortunate peoplewho do not qualify for life-savingtransplantation or preparatory lifesupport before transplantation.
They are sent home to die withoutany hope whatsoever.

Eating healthily on the runTIME is one of the biggest chal-lenges faced by the workforce.
It is therefore easy to understandwhy, formanyworking people, shop-ping forandpreparinghealthymealsand snacks are things very few canfit into a busy day.Celynn Erasmus, a registered die-
tician and wellness consultant forFedhealth andLongevity’s 2012Well-ovation Weight Management Chal-lenge, has a number of easy tips andguidelines aimed at assisting peoplemanage thechallengeofeatingontherun. She says that, in today’s fast-paced
world, it is important to learn howto snack smartly using readily avail-able foods that have been combinedcorrectly.“Smart snacking stabilises blood
sugar levels,helpingtomanageinap-propriate food cravings as well asmaintaining metabolic weight, pro-moting weight management.”A smart snack, she explains,
should fit into thepalmofyourhand, and should contain about 500 kilo-joules for women and 750 kilojoulesfor men.The carbohydrate content should
be no more than 25 g for women and35 g for men; the fat content shouldbe less than 10 g; and the fibre con-
tent should be at least 2 g per snack.Examples includeoneto twopieces
of fresh fruit, 40 g or a small handfulof dried fruit, small health bars, seeds, trail mix, a small handful oflean biltong, or two cups of air-popped popcorn. She advises people to steer clear of
foods that are high in sodium, sugar,or saturated and total fat, and thosethat are virtually devoid of fibre andvitamins.“Although there is a drive by some
companies to supply healthier foodand snack options, a lot of the foodson offer in vending machines, on of-fice trolleys or in canteens remainunhealthy. Ifeatenonaregularbasis, theycancausehavocwithyourbloodsugar levels.“This can result in decreased
energy levels, irritability, poor con-centration, weight gain and an in-creasedriskofdiabetes,heartattacks,stroke,gout,highbloodpressure,can-cer and many other illnesses.”On the home front, she suggests
keeping your kitchen stocked withhealthy foods as this makes it a loteasiertoquicklyassembleabalancedmeal when the need arises.A time-saving idea Erasmus im-
parts is to cook food in advance.“Roasting vegetables in larger quan-tities and keeping them chilled
makes for quick reheating, and theycan be easily added to meals or usedin salads.”All in all, Erasmus says there is
much people can easily incorporateinto their lifestyles to assist them onthe path to health and fitness.“Although diet plays a pivotal role
in determining overall wellness andhealth, exercise is just as important.Asmuchaspeopletrytoeathealthily, they should also be making time toexercise, even if itmeans doing a fewstretches to relieve muscle tension.”
