Duterte kicks-of campaign in Tondo, promisesto eradicate crime and poverty

OUGH-talking Davao CityMayor and PDP-Laban presi-dential bet Rodrigo Dutertevowed to eradicate criminal-ity in just six months if electedpresident in this year MayPresidential election.

Duterte made the declara-tion as he and his runningmate, Senator Alan Peter Cay-etano, formally launched theirpresidential and vice presi-dential bid last uesday at theheart of ondo Manila.

Te proclamation was heldat the corner of Morga andZamora Streets, a known lairof neighborhood toughie andleaders of notorious gangs,

where a large stage was put upfor the proclamation rally.

People of ondo dream ofsomething new. I promised

you something. But if you re-ally know me, I will deliver.I will do it even if i lose mylife, honor and even the presi-dency. I will deliver on mypromises. Duterte declared in

facing about 3,000 residents ofMorga and Zamora streets.

Aside from combating crime, particularly illegal drugs, Du-terte also promised to addressthe corruption issues undertheir campaign slogan unayna Pagbabago.

He added that his adminis-tration will also focus on theempowerment of the poor peo-ple, rescuing them from theclutches of poverty.

And as if bribing the elector-ate, Duterte declared that he

will not only sustain but wouldincrease the cash grants for thepoor as well as double the sala-ries of soldiers and policemen. He however warned them notto engage in illegal activities.

Duterte also took potshot onPresident Aquinos administra-

tion saying that there is no suchthing as uwid na Daan.Te proclamation started at

7 p.m with Duterte arrivingwith his partner Cielito Avan-cena and daugther Veronica.

But some of Dutertes pro-nouncement does not sit well

with the some of the crowdparticularly when he declaredthat he would implement theeconomic measures similarto what was done by the latestrongman Ferdinand Marcos.

He went further by claim-ing that Marcos was the bestpresident the Philippines hasever had, if not only for beinga dictator.

A group of ondo elders, who apparently knew what itis like during Marcos martiallaw was obviously turnoff with

what they heard from Duterte.Aside from neighborhood

toughie and gangs, ondo wasalso known as hotbed of mili-tant groups during martial law.

    Te group in rebuking Du-

    Aquino makakasuhan

Te president is the central figure in all ofthis, he cannot escape it, Ani Enrile.

Sabi ni Enrile, Its anopenly articulated ground for impeachment hesthe chief executive but you cannot impeach himbecause he controls the House of Representa-tives, he controls a lot of people in the senate.

When he is no longer impeachable and be-come an ordinary citizen of the Republic whentheres a next president. Ten he will have to facethe music, face the people through the mecha-nism of exacting justice.

Ayon kay Enrile, Tey[Americans] were in Zamboanga some of them

with the president. Tey were in the headquar-ters of Napeas, some of whom they trained the84th Seabourne.

Ani Enrile, Tey did the mission and ac-complished it. In fairness to the SAF units, theydid very well they accomplished the missionnot nobody, not the army, not anybody else ac-complished the mission they did. Te problemhappened during the withdrawal. Tey wereon the withdrawal place but the problem [mas-sacre] happened. Now, if we have much criti-cized Obama as president like what he did in AlQaeda, in the case of Osama Bin Laden the firstorder he said, Do everything necessary to bring

home the men.

pong libo at pababa, ani Bi-

    nay.

Iyanang dapat asikasuhin at hindiang pagpapatuloy at pag-

BBL unlimitedNO. Tis is definitely not about anybusiness corporation with unlimitedcapitalists funding it, with unlimitedincorporators managing it, and otherunlimited features. Yes. Tis is aboutsomething that brings about unlimitedissues, unlimited difficulties, unlimitedcontradictionsirrespective of whetherBBL is approved or disapproved by theLegislative department, confirmed or re-

jected by the Judicial department. Tesupposedly Basic Law can readily be thecause for otherwise law-abiding peopleto turn lawless. And this is a big pre-dicament for this country which is now,in fact, under threat from within and

without.Tis is in effect saying that the pre-

sent administration under the baton ofthe incumbent Malacaang occupant

with its obedient and even subservientallies in the Executive department, hasformally started a big socio-politicalpredicament in the countrysome-thing that will continue to haunt thepeace and tranquility of people of thePhilippines even after the same publicofficial is long gone from the sight andattention of the general public in thepost-May 2016 era. Instead of bring-ing about a solution, exactly the sameChief-in-Command is instead leaving

behind a legacy of confusion and pursu-ant dissension.Once approved by the Legislature and

affirmed by the Judiciary, consideringthat the BBL covers but a small por-tion of both the people and the land ofMindanao, anything and many thingscan happen through one after anotherdisconcerting or even dissenting initia-

tives of those not benefited by it es-pecially so when their interests andconcerns, their common good or public

welfare are, in effect, undermined by thesaid law. In other words and saying itfrom the heart, BBL spells neither de-finitive unity nor defining peace. Testanding fact is true even now duringits politico-constitutional evaluation, both loud pro and anti BBL camps arealready being heard repeatedly, here andthere.

When disapproved by the Legislativeand thus silencing the Judiciary, takinginto account that those avidly propos-ing and endorsing it from within thePhilippines, as well as from anothercountrywho are not exactly known aspromoters of public harmony and muchless are they looked upon as moder-

atesto expect but their submission oracquiescence to such a disapproval is buta dream. Tey are not exactly fightersfor peace. Tey do not manufacture, own and carry guns and ammunitions

just for picture-taking. What they say, they do. And what they have, they use.

What a serious and dangerous na-tional predicament this present adminis-tration has brought about and is leavingbehind to the fear and uncertainty of thepeople in terms of the BBLin addi-

tion to the Pork Barrel institution, theredefinition of Savings, the example ofbeing Busy while doing nothing, etc.,etc. What is more strange is hearingthe one behind all the above hullaba-looand morerepeatedly saying thathe wants a successor who will continue

what he has done, come May 2016!Tis is hallucinationto say the least!

Just so, your light must shine before others, that they maysee your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

May sinoy, Fil-Chi, Chekwa,Intsik, G.I. (Genuine Instik),PROC (Peoples Republic ofChina), Pinsino, Pilipinongsino at marami pang iba.

Propesor eresita Ang-See atPropesor Chinben See.

Bilang halimbawa,

    Never Forget Never Again

FORY three years ago Presi-dent Ferdinand Marcos de-clared Martial Law. He abol-ished congress, suppressedpress freedom and other civilliberties and violated the rightsof the people. Tousands ofopposition leaders and studentactivists were imprisoned. Sus-pected subversives and crimi-nals were subsequently arrestedor executed (salvaged) withoutdue process. His justificationfor his dictatorial rule: to savethe republic, reform societyand build a new societyangBagong Lipunan . He empha-

sized discipline and one of theslogans was: sa ikakaunlad ngbayan, disiplina ang kailangan.

Trough farcical referendumand plebiscite, Marcos enacteda new constitution which pro-

vided a legal basis for his dic-tatorial rule, with a subservi-ent judiciary and parliament. He tried to replace the oli-garchy with his cronies whocontrolled all sectors of theeconomy. Tus, he monopo-lized political and economicpower. He was a ruthless, re-pressive and corrupt dictator,

who enriched himself whilemajority of his people wal-lowed in poverty. Many ofthose in the military and thepolice became corrupt as welland engaged in torture, ex-trajudicial killings and forced

disappearances.I was one of the victims ofthe Marcos dictatorial rule. In1973, on the first anniversaryof Martial Law, I was arrest-ed, tortured and imprisoned

for seven months. My crime:producing and distributingleaflets that denounced thedictatorial rule. I was just an

18-year old college seminar-ian studying at a University inCebu and involved in studentactivism. After I was releasedfrom prison and continuedmy priestly formation, I wasconstantly haunted by a recur-ring nightmare reminding meof the terror and pain I expe-rienced. During that dark pe-riod, priests that I personallyknew were among the victims:Fr. Godofredo Alingal, SJ theparish priest of Kibawe assassi-nated for his prophetic denun-ciation of military abuses andFr. Rudy Romano, CSsR, afellow Redemptorist who wasabducted and made to disap-pear by military intelligenceagents. Tere were BEC lead-ers and pastoral workers who

    Te Churchs M.V..(Most Valuable reasure)

I FIND it remarkable that theFifty-first International Eucha-rist Congress was held in Cebu. Not that I doubt for one mo-ment Cebus special place asthe cradle of Catholicism in

Asia. I have a more personalreason. It was a Cebuano songI used to listen to, growing upin Borongan, Eastern Samar, that quite incidentally and in-directly led me to better appre-ciate the Eucharist. Rememberthe Matud Nila (Tey Say or,literally, According to Tem)?It was a poignant song I wouldhear over the radio and fromsome of our neighborhood

toughies who would drink tuba(coco wine) on a hot summerSunday, singing their hearts out

with a rundown guitar, about ayoung mans lament over being

judged unworthy of a lady heloves because he has no wealthto offer her but his gugmangputli (pure love) which to himis labaw sa bulawan (more pre-cious than gold).

While reading St. John PaulIIs encyclical Ecclesia de Eu-charistia (Te Church from theEucharist), that Cebuano songcame back to me. No, it wasnot any poor young man thatcrossed my mind but the PoorCarpenter from Nazareth whodeclared, Foxes have holes andbirds of the air have nests, butthe Son of Man has nowhere tolay his head (Lk 9:58). In the

words of Paul the Apostle to thePhilippian Christians (could be

Philippine Christians too):Tough he was in the formof God he did not deem equal-ity with God something to begrasped at. Rather he emptiedhimself and took the form of aslave, being born in the likenessof men. And it was thus thathe humbled himself, becom-ing obedient even unto death, death on a Cross (Phil 2:6-8).He was so poor he had nothing

to give except his pure love. Inmy minds eye it was this PoorCarpenter from Nazareth whoreally first sang Matud Nila tohis bride, the Church.

I really wouldnt know ifthe late saintly pope had everheard of Matud Nila duringthe two occasions he visitedthe country, including Cebu. But I was struck by the lan-

guage he used with which todescribe the Eucharist for usChristians. Te pure, pure lovethat Jesus, the Poor Carpenterfrom Nazareth, offers us onthe Cross is right at the heartof the Eucharist, he declares. Itis the reason why the Eucharistis the source and summit of theChurchs life. Says St. John PaulII: For the most Holy Eucha-rist contains the Churchs entire

spiritual wealth: Christ himself, our Passover and living bread(EdeE 1; PO 5).

In a word, it is not really hispure love alone that we en-counter in the Eucharist but

Jesus himself by whose passion, death, resurrection and ascen-sion we pass from darkness tolight, from death to life, fromsin to grace; hence, he is ourPassover. And Jesus is himselfour food in this very life ofgrace; hence, he is our LivingBread.

It is said that the Philippinesfavorite sport is basketball

which determines the winnerby the most points scored. Onthe other hand, in the story ofsalvation the real winner wasdetermined by how much helost because he has loved most. His crown and living pres-ence is a sacrament called theEucharist. Te winning basket-ball team has the MVP (MostValuable Player); the Eucharisthas the MV (Most Valuablereasure).

As far as the Eucharist isconcerned, Matud Nila has, tome, a agalog sequel in ang-ing Yaman (Most Preciousreasure) which, I would say,is rightfully addressed to Je-sus in the Eucharist. He is the

It seemed a long time ago and many haveforgotten or are ignorant about the dark pe-riod of the history of our country. Nowadays, there are many who believe that Marcos wasthe greatest president of the Philippines and

who question the heroism of Ninoy Aquinowhose death later became the inspiration ofthe People Power. Tese are the people who aretoo young and ignorant to know what reallyhappened or old enough to be instruments orcollaborators of the Marcos dictator and whobenefited from his rule. 7PEBRERO 12, 2016 featureAng Cellphone at Ang Manibela

phone kapag nasa stoplight.

8 PEBRERO 12, 2016sportsPBA FINALS RUNDOWN:San Miguel captures PH title

through the unimaginableFor the first time in the PhilippineBasketball scenery, a championshipis achieved by a team despite facing a0-3 hole to start it. In Game 4 and thepossible clincher for Alaska, the Aces

were less than three minutes away fromsweeping the 2015 defending champs,as they led by 11 over the Beermen. However, the fire of San Miguel juststarted to ignite at that point, as they

were able to escape and eventually pulloff their Beeracle Run.

Lets track down on how SMB did it.

Game 1: Alaska drew first blood withfourth quarter comebackSan Miguels MVP June Mar Fajardosuffered a seemingly punishing leftknee injury in their semis clincheragainst the Rain or Shine Elasto Paint-

ers. Fajardo sat out, giving more min-utes to unsung centers with Yancy DeOcampo and Gabby Espinas. Te Beer-men displayed balanced scoring, not-

withstanding the loss of their main gunin Fajardo. Tey led by a dozen in thefourth quarter, just to lose grip against

Alaskas frenetic defense, in addition toVic Manuel and Calvin Abuevas hus-tle. Alaska outscored San Miguel, 34-16 in the final frame to take Game Oneof the series, 100-91.

Game 2: Manuel powers Alaska to a2-0 leadFor the second straight game, the Beer-men kept pace with Alaska sans Fajar-do, giving them another shot to tie theseries. However, Manuel poured in anefficient 18-point game to lead another

decisive fourth quarter surge by Alaska.Despite late free throws missed by Alas-ka, the Beermen succumbed late, asRonald ubid and Yancy De Ocampomissed rally-stopping baskets. Alaskastarted to dominate and looked poisedin their accumulated momentum withtheir 83-80 Game wo victory.

Game 3: Alaska ends up victors inLucena duel to make it 3-0Te PBA staged its first finals game onthe road, held at the Quezon Conven-tion Center in Lucena. Once again, the top two teams of the PBA madeit neck-to-neck, giving the fans a treatas the match went hanging in the bal-ance. It was a defensive-themed affairin the first three quarters, which endedup in favor of SMB. However, RJ Ja-zul knocked down back-to-back clutch

hits down the stretch to give Alaska thelead with a minute left. Game-sealingfree throws gave the Aces the seeming-ly-over 3-0 series lead, with an 82-75victory in Lucena.

Game 4: San Miguel keeps seasonalive with fourth quarter fightbackTen came the fourth game of the se-ries wherein the Aces looked poised to

wrap the series up. Alaska mounteda double-digit separation with three

minutes left in regulation. Te Beer-men used balanced contributionfrom Gabby Espinas, Alex Cabagnotand Arwind Santos to claw their wayback. On the other end, Cyrus Bagu-io swished an impressive triple at thebuzzer to extend the game to overtime. However, a 9-0 lockdown by SMB in

extension, led by Chris Ross and com-pany, pushed SMB to their first finals

    win of the series, 110-104.

Game 5: With Fajardo back, SMBstays alive with another OT win

June Mar Fajardo made his finals de-but off the bench in Game 5 of thisseries. However, he had minutes re-

striction due to the monitoring of hisknee. A low-scoring affair yielded an-other overtime finish, as Calvin Abuevamissed a bankshot at the buzzer. Forthe second straight overtime game,San Miguel took control in extension, this time making an 11-0 start to stunthe Alaska crew. Fajardo played duringthis stretch, and was instrumental onthe defensive end. Arwind Santos alsobroke out of his shooting slump as his22-point game carried SMB to an 86-73 win.

Game 6: San Miguel staves off an-other elimination to extend series todistanceFajardo came off the bench again, buthim and Marcio Lassiter were phe-nomenal in SMBs Game 6 victory toextend the series for the third straight

time. Lassiters three-point sniping waskey in the fourth, while the Beermenmade sure that there would be no Alas-ka comeback to spoil their ferociousrally. Alaska made a mini-rally late, but resulted to nothing as the Beermenresponded to protect their lead. SMBforced a Game 7, with a 100-89 winand a 33-point fourth quarter in Game

6.Game 7: Beermen completes Beera-cle Run to grab history

With momentum taking a full swingtowards SMB, the Beermen rackedup the points from their main pro-tagonists. Tey led by as much as21, 68-47, during the third quarter,as their barrage of points and defen-sive stops throttled the Aces. Fajardoscored 11 points during the period,

while Alaska had no answer in thethird quarter berserk of San Miguel. However, Alaska put up their last runin the finals, slicing the lead down tofive in the fourth quar ter. Fortunatelyfor the Beermen, Chris Ross came uphuge with two key layups that sal-vaged their lead, ultimately grabbingthe sweet championship at the end.
