    Ogies biggestconcert Friday

I feel blessed to have Ogieas a friend. I am forevergrateful to him for all the im-promptu mini-concerts hegamely performs at my par-ties. He has no mean bone atall. Ogie should be givinghaughty celebs a crash courseon humility.

Together, lets salute thesinger/songwriter for all hissongs that have served as ouradrenaline shots and

painkillers through the years.Kudos, Ogie, for 25 awesomeyears of giving us the bestthat youve got. Your songs

will forever be etched in ourhearts!

What can the audienceexpect from your anniver-sary concert?

It is my biggest concert ev-er. We have 40 guests per-forming!

    What is your most mem-

orable concert? My 20th anniversary is themost memorable, becausethat was the first time mykids came back home, to

watch. (Ex-wife) Michelle(van Eimeren) and (her hus-band) Mark (Murrow) werethere, too, and Regine (Ve-lasquez) was my guest.

Whats your song foryourself these days andwhy?

I wrote a new song which

    has become my current fa-

vorite. Its calledThe Lord is OurSavior. I amsinging it in theconcert with my

    wife.What song

    cant you sing?I cant sing

    rock, R&B, and Icantrapthough I

    will [do all this]

    in my concert.Are good

    singers born,or are theymade?

Goodsingers are def-initely made.It takes a life-time to master the necessaryskills.

What is your most em-barrassing moment on

stage and how did you pullit off?I was performing in a bar

and my fly was open! I justturned around and zipped upafter someone in the audi-ence pointed it out.

What achievement areyou most proud of?

I am most proud of beinga father, a son and a hus-band.

What does it take to be agood singer and great song-

    writer?

You have to be willing tolearn all the time and acceptthat there are others betterthan you.

What is the most impor-tant lesson that youvelearned along the way?

God is always in control. If you were to write a

new song for Regine at thispoint in your life together,

what would the title be?My Rock. After 25 years, what do

you believe is in store forOgie Alcasid?

There is still so much todo, to glorify God through

the gifts He has given me.

entering the UAAP where he helped the Ateneo BlueEagles win four of their last five championships. He has won Rookie of the

Year honors in Season 71 andFinals MVP on his third year.

And despite playing in his fifthand final year, Ryan Buenafestill remains an enigma and apuzzle yet to be solved by oppo-nents inside the basketballcourt. And he is expected tocarry the Hail Mary squad to animprobable sixth straight title.

Motivation ko yung mga taona naniniwala sa amin na kayapa naming manalo, said the62 forward who is not used tohis team starting slow with a 3-4 win-loss record after the firstround of action.

Being one of the seniorstatesmen in the lineup along

with Juami Tiongson, Buenafedoesnt feel too pressured de-spite losing most of their keyplayers from last year.

Sa akin wala masyadongpressure since I know kayakong mag-step up.

Analysts have also hailedhim for his high basketball IQand court awareness which heconsistently showed in the first

round despite the new systemof Coach Bo Perasol. He doesntforce the issue and gets histeammates more involved withhis nifty passes and takes bigbaskets and three pointers

    when needed.When Coach Perasol took

over the coaching reigns, every-body expected the defendingchamps to lose their fluidity in

offense. But Buenafe seesthings in a different perspec-tive.

    year. Medyo runand gun kamingayon.

    His new

coach also no-ticed the lead-ership he hasbeen showingand also his lone weakness.

Ryans only injury is hisweight, quipped Perasol afterone of Ateneos triumphs.

    Buenafe admits that he finds

Though overweight, Buenafeplays crucial role to Ateneo

REPORTING is like a science. You ask the ques-tion, you do the research, and then share yourfindings.

But studying for Health Sci-ence and being an on-cam tal-ent is very different from eachother. Thats exactly why Patri-cia Tricia Robredo went for it.

This has always been mysisters dream. Its a cause for

Her inclusion in the court-side reporter roster caused a stirbecause she was one of thedaughters of Interior Secretary

She has been a fan of UAAPsince her high school years. Shesaid that shes more of a UAAPfan than basketball fan becauseshe would follow UAAP games

    UEs crybaby loves

    winningBy Randolph B. LeongsonC

HARLES Mammie is an emotional player. He is 20 years old, 6-foot-9, 300 pluspounds, and cries like a baby.

That is how UE coach BoycieZamar described his ferociousman in the middle after a hard-

fought game against La Salleearly this season.

He has grown a lot. Bagomag-opening, yung (problemssa) documents niya, suspension, and all these hard foughtgames, Zamar said.

The candid coach has goneon record to say that dealing

with the 6-foot-8 center fromSierra Leone has been a hu-mungous challenge for him.

    Dito sa Pilipinas, you deal

with 16 different egos, andCharles Mammiehe has manyegos. I have to deal with him.Per game basis, per half basis, per quarter basis, per minutebasis. Thats how we did it, Za-mar said.

Western style, Asian

style, Pinoy style, lahat na waglang yung Gangnam Style, hesaid, mixing seamlessly his

    jokes with his pinpoint anec-dotes.

But for Mammie, the RedWarriors leading rebounderand shot blocker, he is slowlygetting the feel of his new en-

viro nmen t here in the Phil ip-pines.

I just try to maintain a posi-tive mindset here. I am far

away from home. Far from mymom who motivates me. Butmy teammates and coaches -they are my family here. Theybelieve in me so I must believein myself also, he said.

Mammie added, I play withheart. More focus and hard-

work, thats what the peoplecan expect from me.

I just want to win thegame.

    New Altasscorer Baloria

    finds markBy Randolph B. LeongsonR

IDING the so-called Aric Magic, the PerpetualHelp Altas clinched their first Final Four berthlast year after an eight year absence behind the

duo of hotshot Jett Vidal and Most Improved PlayerEarl Scottie Thompson.

But this year, a new lead

guard lighting up the score-board kept the Altas in the thickof the fight.

Rookie Juneric Baloriastepped up to the plate forcoach Aric del Rosario, as the23-year-old already carved aname for himself as one of theleagues elite scorers, averaging19.7 points per outing in theirseven games.

Hailing from Lanao delNorte, Baloria settled in Ange-les, Pampanga with his mother

where the seasoned coach re-cruited him.

Malakas siya kasi yung batana yan, beterano na maglaro, said the no-nonsense delRosario.

larong kalye kaya magaling. This confidence given to him

by his multi-titled mentor drivesthe 6-footer Baloria to strive formore.

Mas lalo ko pang ginagalin-gan. Every practice, nag-e-extratraining ako mag-isa, at sahapon, tumatakbo ako tapos ex-tra shooting, he said, whichtestifies to his work ethic, wor-thy of being tagged as a strongcontender for this seasons

    Rookie of the Year honors.

Which gives del Rosariohope that the Altasare all-in ontheir quest foranother crackat the champi-onship.

When the weather outside is gloomyand dim, there is no need to empathize withit and bring yourself down. Instead, turnthings around and jump-start every lazy dayby tossing bright colors and ornate patternshere and there. Pick pieces that can protect

you from the cold and give you a splash ofcolor, as well. A vibrant pair of jeans, a cozypatterned sweater or a brightly detailed scarfcan certainly do the trick.

San BedasKing ArthurBy Alexx Ganda Esponga

SUCCESS. That is all that San Be-da College Red Lion Arthur DelaCruz has experienced in his

three years of stay in the collegiatebasketball scene.

From being a Blue Eagle to aRed Lion, Dela Cruz has wit-nessed first-hand a living legacybeing served in a silver platter.

I was apart of the Ateneo 3-peat, said a proud Dela Cruz.I also won my first champi-

    onship here [San Beda] lastyear.

With three championshipsin a row, Art is overwhelmed. But this hungry Lion wontstop until he is crowned King.He wont stop until he is lordof the rings.

Right after graduating fromhigh school, Dela Cruz alreadyknew the path hell take un-doubtedly straight to Katipunan

    with the Blue Eagles.

Art felt a cert ain feel ing offulfillment the moment hestepped in the grounds of Ate-neo and even more when heplayed for the Blue Eagles. Hehoped for this since he was asophomore and now, it hasbeen given to him.

Noong second year ako, gusto ko na talaga sa Ateneo, said Dela Cruz. After the BlueEagles won the three-peat,Dela Cruz transferred to the

Red Lions. It was tough for me becauseI really wanted to stay in Ate-neo but God had other plans forme.

Art bravely faced the newchapter of his life and surpris-ingly, the risk was worth it.With Ateneo, Art was only liv-ing behind the shadows ofrenowned Blue Eagle Nico Sal-

va but he is now making hisown name with the Red Lions.

    Mas maraming playing time

ngayon kumpara dati kaya maslalo akong nag-improve.

Dela Cruz said the brand ofplay are different in the NCAAand the UAAP.

Iba ang UAAP sa NCAA. SaUAAP, talent ang dominant pero

sa NCAA, mas physical ang la-banan, he [Dela Cruz]quipped.

Never mind the school colorsnor the league he is playing at.For the 21-year old Dela Cruz,

what matters is r etaining thechampionship tradition of wher-ever he is now and become thebest that he could be.

Skipper Rome Dela Rosa ison his last year with the Lionsthis year and many eyes are on

Dela Cruz, expecting that hewould continue what Dela Rosawill be leaving.

Marami pa ang tratra-bahuhin ko, said the BS Mar-keting major Dela Cruz.

Art also said that the team ismore composed now, especially

    with their newly-installed coach

Boyet Fernandez. They aremuch more intact and also havecloser bonds, according to DelaCruz that would definitely helpthem inside the court.

He [Dela Cruz] also isgrateful of all the people thatare supporting him, especiallyhis family; the San Beda com-munity,

Thank you for all your sup-port. Salamat talaga. Para sa in-

yo ang lahat ng mga labannamin.

Katz Salao: Working hard to earn respectBy Ruth L. NavarraL

AST year was a lesson, thisyear is redemption. Its a newseason but a lot of people in

the social media still like to associateKatz Salao with the booboo she com-mitted last year during the cheer-dance competition.

I dont care about the bad things they say

about me. With twitter kasi they can tag youso you see. I dont really mind them. Im as-sured by my team, she says.

The team who has welcomed her back withopen arms is the UE Red Warriors. She isgrateful for it. She says that coach Boysietaught her that the best thing to have is re-spect. She says that, just like her team, she istrying to earn that.

She adds that how great her team should beis how she should be as a reporter. She saysthat she loves that the team trusts her enoughto share their secrets with her. They know that

she wont betray them by including it in theirhalftime report.

There are many things she learned with theteam besides bouncing back strong from hermistakes last year. In a more practical part, shehas learned to drive through the streets ofQuiapo to get to her team.

There are things that didnt change for her.The way she still keeps a plastic balloon insideher bag wherever she goes. She says that blow-ing balloons calms her down.

UE WELCOMES HER WITH OPEN ARMS
