It goes without question that meeting such a wide variety of different people that even go as far as Brazil at AIESEC conferences is exciting and memorable. Navi Sandhu’s favorite part of attending OQA was just that. She met so many new people, from universities like Concordia, McGill and an intern from Brazil. Being able to connect with so many people on an international level made Navi’s experience very significant.

Students have the incredible ability and power to impact the world and this is something that remained with Navi. Not only can just any student generate such powerful positive change, but also a student through AIESEC because you’re equipped with the tools to progress and implement change and positivity. Navi is one to explore on her own and took the metro around Montreal by herself. “It was scary because no one was with me but I was still able to know if I was going the wrong way because it’s such an easy system” she recalls. Regardless of the tough language barrier she had to overcome and learn to adapt to, Navi was still able to learn and progress in her French speaking skills because she knew the basic words. Her host knew very little English but she was still able to interact and communicate effectively with her and in having some of the basics, it allowed her to overcome her fear of communicating with people who didn’t speak as much English.

It’s amazing how fast an AIESECer is able to go up on the AIESEC ladder. “There’s so many opportunities and it’s open to anyone which gives so much room to progress and make an impact as a person, school and organization” she said. This conference changed Navi’s perspective on life on an international level. She is still waiting to be a part of a life changing experience that will take her to another country but hopefully, it will soon happen given the opportunity to be a part of AIESEC.

OQA has impacted Navi in one of the most important decisions that will affect her future; her career. Previously, her goal was to go into the field of HR; Navi has fantastic interpersonal skills and she felt that Human Resources would be perfect. This conference opened so many doors for Navi because she was able to connect with interns and people from not just Canada, but other countries as well. She was able to interact with people that spoke only French and Navi recalls, “If I could do that, I could go to different countries and be able to interact with people, be understanding and not frustrated with them [when they talk in another language]”. Navi found her passion of connecting with people on an international front through OQA and most importantly, through AIESEC. “I’d love to work on an international scope” she explains. OQA allowed Navi to find her passion and calling that she can use to help and positively impact more people.

The city of Montreal falls under the category of the most exciting and beautiful cities in Canada. To add to that, students from all over Canada that belong to AIESEC came together to learn and progress as individuals. “The enthusiasm everyone in AIESEC had about the corporation was my favorite part” Priya Patel recalls. From the workshops to the dances, everyone was so motivated and clearly wanted to be there. It’s nothing new to know hear that you meet countless people who range from places all over Canada and even interns who are visitng from

other countries; your connections and circle of friends is guaranteed to multiply. Priya realized that AIESEC is not just something you do in university but it paves the way for your future. It offers so many incredible opportunities that benefit students not only on an academic level but a personal level; it helps you to strengthen skills like networking, public speaking and time management that will be useful in presentations, school assignments, job

other countries; your connections and circle of friends is guaranteed to multiply. Priya realized that AIESEC is not just something you do in university but it paves the way for your future. It offers so many incredible opportunities that benefit students not only on an academic level but a personal level; it helps you to strengthen skills like networking, public speaking and time management that will be useful in presentations, school assignments, job

opportunities and conduct in the workplace. Like many, Priya is very shy and stepping out of her comfort zone can be difficult at times. By having the opportunity to do things like dine out with people she didn’t know or had just met during OQA allowed her to break out of her shyness and be able to approach people and be more outgoing, since the situation forced her to break her shell. Interacting with so many new faces gave her newfound power and confidence in how she acts around people she doesn’t know. It became clear to Priya that you should take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Be the go-getter, the pro-active self-starter that has a deep passion to continuously improve. Even if there’s a little part of you that wants to do something, “just do it,” she says. If you keep piling up excuses that make you believe you shouldn’t go for it or that you’re too busy, you’ll miss the opportunity and regret it in the future. Since OQA was such an amazing opportunity, it has made Priya more excited about the future. From attending more conferences to getting more involved in school, OQA has allowed her step away from what has always been comfortable to her, and this has only opened up so many doors and opportunities.

attending an AIESEC conference is for you. The dancing and the cheering was the most exhilarating part of OQA for Mavis Liu because of the intense excitement and enthusiasm.Every Local Chapter can dance to the same song because they are AIESEC dances, which made it memorable. The dances spoke as one universal language in which everyone automatically became one collective body.

Mavis holds the position as Graphic Design Team Leader and since this was her first conference, she learned so much about branding and tips on how to improve. Now, when she works with her team she has more ideas and experience on how she can better improve their work and make it enjoyable for everybody.

Since this was her first conference, Mavis didn’t really understand how large AIESEC was and when she went, she was baffled about how many people are a part of this incredible organization. Networking can be nerve-racking at times and Mavis had to face this fear when attending OQA. Although meeting so many people was fun for her, she was still apprehensive to network because of the large population of students who are in AIESEC but felt that it wouldn’t be too hard because it was a new challenge. By attending OQA, Mavis feels as though she is more positive about the idea of networking which will help her in her future as well. AIESEC Laurier is like a large family and by attending OQA, it was evident that AIESEC was a community as well. Meeting new people from so many different cultures bonded everyone together. Canada is a multicultural mosaic and she learned that so is AIESEC because of everyone has a different story and culture to bring to the table which only connects them more. By experiencing all of this, Mavis feels as though she has more power then she has ever had before. She feels empowered, experienced, and involved. She is proud to be a part of this incredible journey that she shares with so many others in AIESEC. “It’s not like other clubs where you do so little,” she explains, “I do so much, and put so much into and I get so much out of it.” Her passion and dedication inspires her team and fellow AIESECers to strive to do well. After all, you get as much out of it as you put into it.

CARMEN FONG

AIESEC conferences always attract students from countless universities all over Canada and meeting new people was Carmen’s favorite part. OQA was Carmen’s first conference and she didn’t know what to expect at all. She recalls, “I just went with the flow and ended up having an amazing experience” and this is an opportunity for anyone to meet countless students from so many universities who are working together to meet one collective goal.

Page 12: Vol.002 Issue 2

Experiencing the AIESEC culture was the most important thing that Carmen took out of the conference. After a 6-hour bus ride to Montreal, she already got a taste of the AIESEC culture because people were so friendly and warm. “It literally hits you in the face” she said, as she explained how the atmosphere and plentiful opportunities to dance made everything incredibly memorable. However, it wasn’t all easy because she was thrown into an entirely different culture of a mostly French-speaking Montreal – a language she doesn’t speak and it was a fear she had to overcome. At previous conferences, everyone would be placed in the same hotel but at this conference, she explained, they were posted in host homes so AIESEC Laurier was dispersed. They had to learn their way around Montreal, and not having the hang of speaking French made it somewhat harder. Regardless, Carmen explains how her host was very nice and welcoming; “he taught us some French and helped us around Montreal because we had to take the bus and find our way around the city. We were completely immersed in the Montreal culture by experiencing this.”

Page 13: Vol.002 Issue 2

OQA had many workshops, and it was during these that Carmen heard an analogy that has resonated with her; AIESEC is like a sandbox. You go in with all your ideas and creativity. With that, you build your own sand castle. But nothing in the sandbox lasts forever. When you leave, someone will come in - tear everything down, and make something of their own. It might be just as amazing as your own castle, better or maybe a bit lacking. But the point is, when it is your time to go, you have to let go. Things change within AIESEC and nothing is permanent. The best you can do is train and prepare the people after you to continue the legacy, and hopefully that will help them build a strong foundation for their own castles. By attending workshops like these inspired Carmen to be more open minded. Having the title as a Team Leader in previous years made her have the impression that things were structured a specific way. She went into her role with a lot of creativity and enthusiasm. After going to the conference, she connected with other LC’s (Local Chapters) and got to share how each of them did things differently. They all ran things in a different manner and it was insightful for her to hear everyone else’s strengths and weaknesses. The workshops with the other LC’s got her “creative juices” flowing again. Carmen came back with new ideas and an open mind to experiment and try new things, as this conference was “a learn and teach opportunity” for everyone.

The fact that she could travel, network and build relationships at the same time made OQA a fantastic experience for her. So many people from different schools attended OQA and Rachel was able to connect with them, which highlighted the importance of breaking through comfort zones and becoming aware and connected. Along with this, the dances that AIESEC is so well known for made for amazing and entertaining

stories and memories. An important acronym that Rachel learned during her time at the OQA was JFDI (just f- do it). During the conference, they try to make it obvious to you that it is always better to try, than to not try and regret. In doing this, you can break comfort zone and push past your limits to achieve success. In taking JFDI seriously, it has enabled Rachel to break boundaries and strive for what seems even the most unrealistic, because it can happen and you can never be too outgoing. Like many people who can relate, talking in front of large crowds was something that Rachel had and still has, a hard time doing. When selected to answer a question about “selling” AIESEC to the whole conference, she found herself unsure of how to say it, since she only joined a week prior to going. In the end, she killed it and this experience only resulted in her being more comfortable speaking out and voicing her opinion during the rest of the conference. Rachel’s

underlying message her is to break your comfort zone;“you never know if you don’t try,” she says.

People admire people who can be outgoing and share ideas, they notice them which then creates connections and opportunities.

By stepping out of her comfort zone, Rachel broke

barriers and befriended people in universities she hadn’t even heard of until attending OQA. This experience has impacted Rachel in a positive way that is only benefiting her future opportunities. While she’ll always have a fear of speaking in front of huge crowds, she’s learned to brave it out and do it anyway because regrets area always worse. It has opened doors for Rachel because now she has the confidence to volunteer and apply for more things and ultimately, expand her horizons.
