2 Fire Walking FesTival (TheemiDhi)When: 1 Nov

Where: From Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple to Sri Mariamman TempleWalk the talk at this historical festival that originates from South India. The Head Priest will carry a large copper vessel decorated with flowers and neem leaves, leading thousands of devotees on a 4km procession, culminating in a walk across a scorching bed of coals.

This act is done in exchange for a wish or blessing granted by the Goddess Draupadai.

The 185-year-old Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu Temple in Singapore, has been hosting the annual Theemidhi Festival since the 1840s. Participation is open to all.

An ancient festival in the Hindu almanac, Deepavali (Nov 10) is a time for families, friends and the community to come together in a grand celebration of lights, music and culinary treats.

At this year’s celebration, organised by the Little India Shopkeepers and Heritage Association (LISHA), you can look forward to a spectacular line-up of concerts, ceremonies and fiestas at key locations of rich heritage.

Already, four stone lions have been placed at various points along Serangoon Road to welcome the two million visitors expected to come by Little India from now until Nov 10.

Warriors FC’s golden boy Fazrul Nawaz is leading the charge on the local front, to snatch the S.League top scorer award from the claws of Balestier Khalsa’s Croatian hotshot Miroslav Kristic and Brunei DPMM’s Brazilian marksman Rafael Ramazotti.

The three strikers were tied on 14 goals each before last week’s fixtures. With the rescheduled roster for the upcoming weeks, the lead for the race to Golden Boot supremacy is expected to alternate between the three until the very end.

History AwAits FAzrul nAwAzSince the inception of the S.League in 1996, the top scorer award has gone to a foreign player with the notable exception of the naturalised trio of Aleksandar Duric, Egmar Gonçalves and Mirko Grabovac.

Should Fazrul hold his own and go on to finish the season with the golden boot, he will become the first-ever local-born striker to win the coveted award. This is a huge feat when you consider that legends such as Indra Sahdan have come within touching distance but have never clinched the award.

Manchester derby headlines Premier League weekendFrom the UEFA Champions League to the Barclays’ Premier League, the rivalry of the blue and red halves in Manchester take the spotlight

With just two points separating the crosstown rivals at the top of the table, Manchester United and Manchester City face off at Old Trafford on Sunday after a week in which both clubs were involved in UEFA Champions League action.

MAnchester united Vs MAnchester city It is only the tenth match of the season so this is an important yet not definitive derby game between two clubs who are growing in confidence and momentum.

Both teams were comfortable winners last weekend. Manchester United managed a 3-0 victory at Everton, who were desperate to win to honour the memory of ex-manager Howard Kendall, while Manchester City were powered by a Raheem Sterling hat-trick to thump Bournemouth 5-1 at home.

In normal circumstances, a more settled City outfit might have the edge on a United team in transition. But the Sky Blues are missing their two most influential players, Sergio Aguero and David Silva.

Sterling and Wilfried Bony combined for all five goals the last time out but the pair will find the going much tougher at Old Trafford. Similarly, Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial, who have been on the score sheet in recent weeks, will be watched closely by a City defence strengthened by the anticipated league return of captain Vincent Kompany.

Although this fixture has on occasion produced lopsided results, this match is likely to end in a draw.

Prediction: Manchester Utd 1-1 Manchester City

West hAM Vs chelseAThe Londoners are looking good in the top four, with five wins and only two defeats in their first nine matches, while playing an attractive brand of football.

We’re talking about West Ham and not Chelsea, by the way. The Hammers sit six points above their more illustrious rivals in an impressive 4th spot.

Eden Hazard was the scapegoat for Jose Mourinho last weekend, with the brilliant Belgian left on the bench for his low work-rate as the Blues broke through for a much-needed 2-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Oddly, West Ham has won just one of its four matches at Upton Park this season, proving more potent on the counter attack, away from home. With this in mind, it could be the week for Chelsea to shake off its shackles and secure a victory to keep alive — mathematically at least — its title defence.

Prediction: West Ham 1-2 Chelsea

liVerpool Vs southAMptonDespite walking into an injury crisis at Liverpool, new manager Juergen Klopp achieved a respectable draw at Tottenham Hotspur in his first match after taking over from Brendan Rodgers. Next, a first home game against a mid-table Southampton team is another moderate test awaiting the former Borussia Dortmund boss.

The various ailments that have seen a four-man strike force reduced to Belgian rookie Divock Origi make Klopp’s first weeks difficult. How is he to introduce the kind of full-throttle football, known from his days in the Bundesliga, without the right kind of attacking players up-front?

Nonetheless, the early signs from the charismatic German have been good. Klopp exudes the kind of positive and uplifting vibe that is in contrast to the self-obsessed introspection that marked the final months of Rodgers’ reign. That should be enough to help an under-strength home side achieve a positive result, but it won’t be easy.

Prediction: Liverpool 1-0 Southampton

ArsenAl Vs eVertonArsene Wenger’s team will go top of the table if it can despatch Roberto Martinez’s side on Saturday, and if Manchester City loses to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Despite their well-documented struggles in Europe, the Gunners have strung together an impressive calendar year in terms of league results.

The move of Theo Walcott to a more central forward position, relegating Olivier Giroud to the bench, has paid dividends. Furthermore, Alexis Sanchez looks even better in his second season in the Premier League. Petr Cech has also proven to be the quality goalkeeper that the club has been missing.

Jeremy Monteiro: From jingles to jazz magicThe local jazz legend opens up to Weekender about his journey, from jingles to national songs to jazz on the world stage

To his slightly younger fans, Jeremy Monteiro is the master of feel-good jazz tunes that warm the heart and soul.

Nonetheless, older fans may recall a time in the 1980s when Jeremy was known as “The Jingle Man”. With catchy singsong commercials for big brands such as Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Cadbury, his portfolio sings to the tune of some 500 jingles in all.

Despite his impressive commercial accomplishments, Jeremy decided to give up jingle-writing in 1991 to focus on a jazz career. Though there was much uncertainty in the future at the time, many would later say it was the right move.

Jeremy, who shot to international fame with his 1988 performance at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, had talent too large to ignore. Besides being a jazz maestro, he also had a hand in writing our national songs “We Are Singapore” (1987) and “One People, One Nation, One Singapore” (1990).

Last Friday, Jeremy took to the stage with Hong Kong jazz guitarist Eugene Pao, a long-time friend and musical collaborator. Held at the Victoria Concert Hall, “To Paris with Love” was a tribute to legendary French composer Michel Legrand.

I spoke to Jeremy about his move from jingles to jazz, and life beyond making music.

ApArt from “to pAris With Love”, WhAt hAve you been busy With?I was busy rehearsing with the Southbank Sinfonia Orchestra in London for our performance in Hong Kong [on Sep 22]. I’ve also been practicing with Italian organist Alberto Marsico and the Jazz-Blues Brothers for our performance at the EFG London Jazz Festival on Nov 18.

hoW hAve you personALLy been inspired by micheL LegrAnd?I grew up with the music of Michel Legrand as my Dad had his albums… Legrand’s style and sound is part of my musical psyche and this has been so for many years.

WouLd you ever Write jingLes AgAin?I stopped doing jingles in 1991… Doing that kind of work was killing my creative spirit… I did one or two in the couple of years after that for friends who virtually begged me. After that, I told myself I was done.

I have no intention of going back and haven’t in the past 23 years.

Writing more national songs and movie scores are not included. If I get offers to do those, I would.

WhAt’s in your pLAyList noW?Tommy Flanagan’s album, “The Jazz Poet”. Various tracks from Cannonball Adderley (and his brother Nat). Random stuff while surfing Spotify. I have quite random listening habits, but I listen to all genres.

I’ve also been listening to a lot more orchestral classical pieces lately to try and learn orchestration techniques.

Which is your fAvourite city to pLAy in? Why?I have come to love performing in Bangkok, Germany and London because the audiences are very responsive and appreciative of me in those places.

I also really love performing at home because the home audience now shows nothing but love and appreciation for my work.

WhAt singApore food do you Like to induLge in?After a long trip, I head to my neighbourhood hawker centre and wallop a plate of char kway teow.

Other than that, my two favourite restaurants in Singapore are Samy’s Curry and Rendezvous Nasi Padang. For Western food, it’s a hard fight between Sky on 57 and Iggy’s.

hAs this sg50 yeAr been busy for you?My work in the first nine months of this year is equivalent in intensity and quantity to everything I have done in 2013 and 2014 combined.

I snatch two- to three-day breaks when I am in Europe. Just before starting my work in London last week, I went for a quiet weekend trip to Oxford.

I usually will visit an old European city like Heidelberg during my work trips to Europe and chill there for three or four days.

When I’m in Singapore, I try to have days where I just vegetate. I have to grab my rest and recreation where I can… I listen to my body and don’t allow myself to be burnt out but I also love my work so it doesn’t really feel like work, unless I get physically tired.

WhAt Advice WouLd you give to singAporeAns Who’re considering entering the music industry?I would say, “Don’t do it!” Hahahaha! But if you insist on still doing it and if you are talented, I

would do what I can to encourage you and use whatever small influence I have to get people to support you.

WhAt upcoming projects cAn fAns see you in?The next big one is my 11th Jazzy Christmas Concert at the Esplanade on Dec 18, “Frankly, It’s Christmas”. It will commemorate the late jazz singer Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday.

Viewers beware — you’re in for a scare. Though, if you’re a grown up, you’ll probably be more entertained than scared.

Goosebumps, the movie, revives the series of horror novels of the same name, which many kids of the 1990s grew up reading.

The “Goosebumps” series of books was known to have kooky yet spooky covers that were sometimes borderline unsettling, such as a sinister-looking puppet, murderous garden gnomes and a shrunken human head in a child’s bedroom. Still, they possessed a strange magnetism that piqued the curiosity of many a young bookworm.

Now, this series is back in a retro film reboot that both adults and kids can enjoy.

CREATURE FEATUREInterestingly, this new movie that’s directed by Rob Letterman (who was also behind Shark Tale and Monsters vs Aliens) takes a leaf from almost every book in the original series.

After moving to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) makes friends with his neighbour, Hannah Stine (Odeya Rush). Her father is none other than the author of the “Goosebumps” stories, RL Stine, portrayed by the live wire, Jack Black (star of School of Rock and Kung Fu Panda).

One day, Zach unintentionally opens one of Mr Stine’s manuscripts — a fateful act that unleashes a host of his monstrous and ghoulish creations including Slappy the Dummy, the Abominable Snowman, giant praying mantises and even living lawn gnomes.

Zach and Hannah must work together with him and use his knowledge of the creatures’ powers and weaknesses to recapture them before their town gets overrun by nasty demons.

THRILLS AND SPILLS FOR THE FAMILYIf you’re worried that these otherworldly creatures may be too terrifying for your kids, rest assured that Stine himself made sure that the young ones would not be scared silly.

Before filming started, Black and Letterman had lunch with Stine, who advised them to “make sure it’s scary but not too scary because, remember, in my audience there are a lot of kids”. And when Stine saw the script, he gave it a thumbs-up.

The end result is a fun movie that Black’s own kids — seven and nine years old — found “super-exciting but not terrifying”.

STRANGER DANGER?Being a fan and collector of the original “Goosebumps” books, I can’t help but have a sneaking suspicion that the movie might follow in the footsteps of the novels. Stine is known to lure his readers in with familiar places and people, before flooring you with a jaw-dropping revelation.

In this case, I’m sure we’re in for a bumpy ride beyond the threat of the monsters. So, even if you’re an adult and Stine’s ghouls and freaks don’t scare you, you (probably) won’t be disappointed by the plot.

Don’t let your guard down for a minute. The titular “Goosebumps” may arrive not from the creepy creatures but from the hair-raising revelation at the end. I know I can’t wait.

3. A ‘STRANGER’ IN THE NEW HOME

“In 1987, when I was nine years old, my family moved into another flat. As Catholics, it is a practice for us to invite a priest to bless the house. Before we did this, I experienced a strange presence in my room.

Being an only child, I slept alone. One day, after coming back late from a family gathering, I lay on my bed trying to fall asleep.

Then, I heard it: A loud breathing noise as if someone was inhaling deeply through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. Chills tingled down my spine but, being tired, I dismissed it as my father snoring, and went to sleep.

After a few nights of hearing this, I decided to investigate if it was my father, so I walked over to their room — only to find that all was quiet.

Upon re-entering my room, I heard the noise again. As I made my way back to my bed, it became clear that the breathing was coming from the corner of my room where my cupboard stood.

By now my pulse was racing and I was scared out of my wits. I lay motionless on my bed and tried to peer towards my feet at the dark corner where the breathing was coming from but I saw nothing. I started praying, but it didn’t stop.

Finally, plucking up my courage, I grabbed my bolster and blanket, darted out of my room into my parents’ room and dove onto their bed. I just gave an excuse that it was too warm in my room and slept there instead.

After that, being in my room made me feel very uneasy.

Thankfully, after the priest blessed our home, the incident never occurred again.”

1. THE PONTIANAK IN THE SCHOOL TOILET

“This happened when I was in Secondary 3 at a girls’ school in the East. It was around 6.30pm, and three of us — Calli, Mel and I — headed to a restroom. There had been rumours about weird happenings in this toilet.

Mel waited outside, and I went in to accompany Calli. While Calli used the loo, I tied my hair at the sink.

Gazing into the mirror, I suddenly noticed a girl standing in an empty cubicle. She was wearing our school uniform, and her face was turned away and facing the wall. She had a red string tied around her neck.

But here’s weirdest part: She was gesturing with her hands for me to go to her.I was so frightened that I bolted out of the toilet and frantically told Mel what I saw.

She explained that if a person ties a red thread from the foot of his bed to a banana tree of a Pontianak (a female ghost), the Pontianak would become bound to that person’s will.

When Calli finally came out after ten minutes, she was surprised to see me outside. She insisted that she had been talking to me inside the toilet, and ‘I’ even responded, ‘Ah. Ah. Ah.’ Mel and I grabbed Calli and ran as far away from that toilet as we could.

5. THE WRATH OF THE INFAMOUS RED HOUSE

“This incident happened around 1996, when my secondary school friends and I had a gathering at a chalet in Pasir Ris. During the wee hours, a friend suggested we explore the ‘Red House’ nearby. This friend apparently has ‘the third eye’ and advised us to walk close to one another.

The house was surrounded by a fence but we could go through a hole in the back. It was dark and, just as we entered, I felt a dip in the temperature.

Suddenly, my friend with the third eye hurriedly told us to turn back. Incidentally, right then, there was a bright flash of light (that could’ve been lightning) from outside that scared the wits out of us, and we rushed out.

When we reached the chalet, two of my friends started vomiting, and the clairvoyant guy just sat down with a weird look in his eyes. He fell into a fever after that. One of my friends and I (incidentally we were both Catholic) were fine.

When we finally discussed what happened, one of the guys revealed that he’d accidentally stepped on some offerings outside the house, which perhaps angered some spirit. We never brought up that incident again.”

2. THE GHOST MARKET

“I used to live in a shophouse in Tiong Bahru opposite the old wet market; these units were called war-houses because they’ve been around since World War II. I raised my seven children there.

I didn’t tell my children this story until they grew up and asked why I decided to move away.

In the middle of the night, after everyone had gone to sleep, I would hear noises from across the street, from the wet market. It sounded like the usual morning crowd of people chattering and hawking their groceries. But all the stalls are closed at that hour.

It would get even louder during the Chinese Seventh Month. I closed all my windows and shut my curtains because I was afraid of what I might see.

We sold the house more than ten years ago.”

4. POSSESSED BY AN ANGRY SPIRIT

“My maternal grandfather inherited a waris, or guardian spirit, which protected him over the years. Different waris have to be ‘raised’ differently but my grandfather only had to recite the Quran to protect himself.

Since my grandfather was the last male of his bloodline, the waris was desperate to latch onto a new owner. My grandfather started falling ill and became weaker, and the waris grew increasingly agitated and aggressive.

One night, when my family was visiting my grandfather, the waris possessed my young niece. She started shouting things like ‘This one is mine!’

We were on the seventh floor. My uncle could hear the screams from the coffee shop, where he was, downstairs. At one point, she even managed to shove her mother against a wall.

We recited verses from the Quran and said prayers to weaken and drive the spirit away. Afterwards, my niece had no recollection of her actions.

My grandfather has since passed away, and we’ve never heard or experienced anything from the waris since. It may have disappeared or could have latched onto someone else. Whichever the case, I don’t want to know.”

“How many of you are younger than this whisky?” asked Matthew Fergusson-Stewart, Glenfiddich’s Regional Brand Ambassador for Southeast Asia, as unabashed faces grinned and hands shot up.

We were seated at Glenfiddich 1965, a whisky pairing dinner with celebrity chef, Janice Wong, to unveil the special Singapore Anniversary Edition 50 Year Old by Glenfiddich — the world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky.

Fascinating PairingsWith multi-media windows transporting us to the rolling highlands of Scotland and local-inspired cuisine presented on an interactive dining table, it was a fascinating experience to behold, made better by the aged whiskies arriving in chronological succession.

Starting off with the 12 Year Old, a distinctively-fruity whisky whose smooth and mellow finish matched the rich umami of our deconstructed bak kut teh, we were soon swept off our feet with the creative pairings.

Our choice pick is the 21 Year Old, which is deliberately finished in Caribbean Rum Casks, leaving it with exotic notes of ginger, fig, lime and banana. The mature whisky exudes warmth from its tinge of spicy toffee and complemented the reduced toffee sauce in our dish of chicken confit and foie gras.

Finest 50-Year-OldFinally came a special edition for discerning whisky drinkers only. The star of the night was a precious tasting portion of Glenfiddich’s 50 Year Old — 2ml for each of us, to be exact. In a celebration of Singapore’s 50th anniversary, Glenfiddich has released this rare whisky in five limited edition bottles, at the hefty tag of £30,000 each.

Aged for as long as our nation’s

independence, the 50 Year Old has a harmonious and vibrant aroma, hinting subtly of rose petals and smoky oak. With a sweet and slightly zesty taste, the layered nuances of this mature single malt whisky make it one of the world’s finest.

WhiskY Meets artWhat’s noteworthy is the limited edition design which the five bottles come in — a subtle integration of the Singapore Vanda Miss Joaquim and Scottish Thistle, homage to both nations’ cultures. Each bottle is also accompanied by a one-of-a-kind art piece by five locally-based artists.

I was especially drawn to the Cape of Unity, a whisky glorifier in the form of a majestic white cape, designed with the scale patterns of the Merlion. Combined with the classic antlers of Glenfiddich, this will surely be a standout centrepiece.

North Indian and Chinese culinary techniques come together in colourful dishes — but is it good fusion or confusion?

As a Eurasian, I’m often questioned about my mixed parentage and cultures. Thus, it comes as no surprise to me to hear of confusion arising from varied culinary fusions in the dining scene here.

As such, I was a little apprehensive when I visited Copper Chimney, a restaurant which prides itself in its distinctive North Indian and Chinese-Indian, or “Chindian”, cuisine.

Helmed by new Executive Chef Gyanesh Dass, Copper Chimney’s niche is in Chindian specialities — dishes originating from ethnic Han Chinese in India who grew to enjoy the local Indian spices and incorporated these ingredients into their traditional Chinese cooking styles.

Looking at the menu, it’s clear that the restaurant chooses to focus on what it does best rather than to have a spectrum of choices of lesser quality.

an aPPetising startMy meal kicked off with Malai Chicken Tikka ($12) with a side of mint sauce. Being used to the bright red and heavily-spiced chicken tikka masala so often served at Indian diners, I found the dish here surprisingly light-coloured and simply-seasoned. Yet, the chicken fillets impressed with their tenderness and lightly-charred surface.

Next, we had the Salt and Pepper Baby Corn ($9), a delightful snack cloaked in batter, which gave way to a crunchy bite. Stir fried in a savoury combination of peppers, garlic and soya sauce, the baby corn dish reminded me of the Chinese kung pao chicken.

OF the rich and sPicYThen came the main dishes. The Butter Chicken ($11.50) and Mutton Roganjosh ($12), with their thick and rich consistency, had perfect dipping sauces for the Garlic Naan ($3.50) and Rumali Roti ($3.50). The Mutton Roganjosh stood out for its tender meat and fragrantly-spiced gravy, and paired well with the thin yet supple Rumali Roti

The Rumali Roti, affectionately called “Handkerchief bread” in North India, is made by skilful chefs who manoeuvre the dough over a tandoor oven until it becomes soft.

Having savoured the North Indian favourites, we were served Chindian specialities. Not knowing what to expect, I bravely went for a big mouthful of the Szechwan Fried Rice ($11), and was slightly

taken aback by the fiery spiciness. After fighting the fire with a glass of

refreshing Mint Calamansi ($4), I began to understand why this was one of the more popular choices. The use of Chinese spices in Basmati rice created a hearty and zesty flavour that was full-bodied and delicious. On the other hand, the Szechwan Noodles ($11) was overly greasy and lacked the aromatic wok hei I expected from a stir-fried noodle dish.

hOt and cOldIf you only have space for one dessert, go for the Lychee Kulfi ($7). The traditional Indian frozen dairy dessert comes in flavours such as rose and pistachio but the lychee-infused one was particularly divine.

For post-meal theatrics, order the Sizzling Brownie and Ice Cream ($7.50). Once the chocolate syrup hits the hot pan, it bubbles beautifully and turns into a fudgy sauce that goes nicely with the house-made brownie.

Overall, I liked that Copper Chimney’s menu was a good interpretation of both Indian and Chinese influences, translating them into dishes that are distinct in their flavours. There was certainly good fusion and no confusion.

If you want to challenge your taste buds, try the Possessed By Chilli ($10) mocktail, which is made of refreshing fresh watermelon juice, gum syrup and a good dose of tongue-numbing chilli. Torture never tasted so good.

Food for an emperor at KaiserhausFeast on an Austrian Emperor’s favourite dish and other traditional delicacies at this posh restaurant

Cuisine from the Habsburg Empire is certainly refreshing.

Kaiserhaus has a menu that features signature dishes from Austria-Hungary to even the Balkan region. You can expect generous portions of hearty dishes that are meat-heavy and rich in flavour, and even historic desserts such as Emperor’s Pancake and Sachertorte.

A GrAnd SettinGAt first glance, Kaiserhaus is an opulent sight — right down to its royal crest. The centrepiece of the two-storey restaurant at the newly-refurbished Capitol Theatre is a grand staircase, created specially by a wrought-iron artisan from Austria.

The seating is plush and comfortable, in a modern take on aristocratic decor. Being surrounded by handcrafted and elegant fittings, I couldn’t help but wonder if my dressing was regal enough to match.

Bite into HiStoricAl FlAvourSWith the kitchen helmed by Executive Chef Hans Lüftenegger, originally from Austria, you’ll be tucking into dishes such as the Tafelspitz ($38), said to be a favourite of the former Austro-Hungarian Emperor, Franz Josef I.

As a small-eater, the portion left me wide-eyed. Grain-fed beef rump and oyster blade in a copper pot filled with beef bouillon and mixed root vegetables, bone marrow, toasted rye bread, crispy rosti potatoes, creamed spinach and spicy horseradish sauce — imagine all that wholesome goodness in one course.

Just as I was wondering where to start, I noticed an illustrated card which instructed me, step by step, on which to start with. Each step offered a different dimension of flavour to the dish. For instance, the creamy bone marrow as a flavourful spread for the rye, as well as the crisp rosti that was delicious between sips of well-simmered beef broth.

If you like your meat well-roasted, you should opt for the Veprova Pecene ($24), a dish of roasted pork with crispy crackling, roasted root vegetables and natural jus. The roasted pork was lightly-seasoned yet tasty, and tender.

It was served on a bed of gabelkraut and accompanied by bread dumplings. You can

The vine-ripened tomatoes and mozzarella with a touch of pesto tasted refreshing but was unfortunately overwhelmed by the heavy tuna sauce atop the thinly-sliced pork roast.

Some oF tHe FineSt deSSertS From europeDessert lovers will be delighted to know that Kaiserhaus has partnered with renowned Austrian patisserie Zauner to offer diners some of the finest sweet delicacies from Europe. The Zaunerstollen (145g for $23) is a must-try with its addictive combination of nougat, wafer, hazelnut and chocolate — I think it’d make a great gift for takeaway.

Give Mozartknodel ($13) a try. It’s a rather decadent dessert featuring dumplings filled with marzipan and nougat pralines. Served with a scoop of pistachio ice cream and marinated raspberry, a variety of flavours will greet you with every bite.

Kaiserhaus is a great dining destination if you’re looking for hearty comfort food with an interesting Austro-Hungarian influence.

We check in with the experts to see if coconut water is as healthy as it claims to be

Since the start of this year, I’ve seen a growing number of fellow gym goers sipping from bottles of branded coconut water in between workouts and especially after exercise routines.

As someone who hydrates mainly with plain water, I couldn’t help but wonder if coconut water was another fitness fad or simply a health trend I’ve yet to catch on.

Nonetheless, a number of coconut water brands have been popping up in Singapore, signifying the drink’s growing popularity.

In fact, various gyms and fitness studios, such as Upside Motion and Crucycle, have been spotted with mini fridges stocked full of packaged coconut water, with each bottle retailing for at least $2.

HealtH claimsTo many gym goers, coconut water is a “great source of rehydration” and a “good alternative to isotonic drinks”.

In fact, the brands themselves have been touting their products as being “jam-packed with electrolytes”, “containing more potassium than a banana”, “fat-free”, “cholesterol-free” and so on.

But how true are these claims?According to dietitian Lauren Ho, coconut

water is a good source of electrolytes, especially potassium, and is naturally fat-free and cholesterol-free.

However, the claim that coconut water contains more potassium than a banana is not entirely true.

Clinical dietitian at Aptima Nutrition & Sports Consultants Jaclyn Reutens explains, “A regular banana contains about 360mg of potassium per 100g, whereas bottled coconut water contains about 200-300mg of potassium per 100ml.

“Coconut water is mainly a source of fluid, potassium and sugar. Any other nutrients found are in negligible amounts,” she says.

And if you think consuming the fruit beats the packaged drink in terms of health benefits, think again — coconut flesh is high in fat while the coconut water alone is naturally fat-free.

Still, for those who need to have their fix of coconut water, moderation is key.

Ms Ho says, “There aren’t any existing guidelines on the recommended daily intake of coconut water. But my advice is to always

choose plain water first and if you crave for something a little sweeter, then have the occasional drink of coconut water.”

But do not mistake coconut water for coconut milk, she warns. Made from the flesh of the fruit, coconut milk is high in calories, total fat and saturated fat.

“People with heart disease should limit their intake of coconut milk as a high intake of saturated fat may increase their LDL cholesterol (or “bad” cholesterol) and risk for heart disease,” she says.

Compared to coconut milk which has about 600 calories per cup and 57g of fat, unflavoured natural coconut water is fat-free and has about 45 calories per cup.

Necessary HydratioN?Keeping ourselves well-hydrated is a must. But can coconut water ever replace water as the recommended fluid of choice, even post-exercise?

The answer is a firm no, say both dietitians.

“Water is enough to replace body fluids lost after a bout of moderate-intensity exercise. But sports or isotonic drinks may be needed for prolonged endurance exercises of an hour or more,” says Ms Ho.

The reason, Ms Reutens explains, is because the body has enough reserves to replace any carbohydrates and electrolytes lost during short bouts of exercises.

But an isotonic drink is needed for longer exercises as it helps the body facilitate fluid and electrolyte replacement.

Ms Reutens says, “An isotonic drink provides 6-8 per cent carbohydrates with small amounts of potassium and sodium.

That formulation allows the nutrients to be immediately absorbed into the intestinal tract and used by the body.”

However, coconut water is not designed in the same manner.

“While the drink does contain those nutrients, its concentration is not the same as isotonic beverages. It also does not hydrate as quickly. You may replace an isotonic drink with coconut water but the effectiveness is not the same,” says Ms Reutens.

The latest beauty site to hit town carries products from over 70 inter-national brands These days, you don’t have to jostle with the crowds to update your wardrobe or replenish your favourite beauty products.

With the e-commerce scene booming in Singapore, you can even get skincare and makeup essentials delivered right to your doorstop from online stores such as Luxola, Lazada and Zalora.

Two months ago, beauty e-commerce startup BeautyFresh became the latest player on the market, offering discounts of approximately 20 per cent off the normal retail prices of many top international

make-up, skincare and fragrance brands.Are these deals too good to be true?

We thought so, until we tried the site out for ourselves.

Easy surfingAt first glance, the site had a clean layout typical of most fashion or beauty e-commerce sites.

We particularly liked the section that featured Instagram photos hashtagged with #beautyfreshfave. Click on these photos and you have the option of instantly placing the featured items into your shopping cart. How convenient!

Trawling through the site, we found star products from over 70 international labels,

including Chanel and Laneige, as well as hard-to-find cult favourites like the Nars Kabuki brush in stock — at a discount.

I also found other great buys, like my must-have, the SKII Stempower Essence (30ml) priced at just $140, compared to $149 on Luxola.

According to BeautyFresh, its ability to offer such vast discounts is due to its Swiss investors’ strength in global trading and bulk sourcing.

PEacE of mindAnd if like me, you worry about the authenticity of discounted beauty products, you’ll be relieved to hear that BeautyFresh uses a dual process to ensure authenticity.

First, products are scanned using ultraviolet light to check for defects and second, employees will conduct manual checks to ensure products are not near expiry dates.

When it comes to looking good, introducing some simple tricks into your makeup routine can go a long way, says stylist Marcus AC, who showcased this season’s looks at the BeautyFresh launch event.

To achieve a flawless look, for example, try blending your foundation and concealer together. Feel free to experiment with the blend as there is no fixed ratio to adhere to. Those who require more coverage can add more concealer into the mix, he says.

Eyeshadow too, can be used as a lipstick. First, apply some lip gloss. Next, using your fingertips, apply eyeshadow on your lips. Apply more lip gloss for a less matte look.

When I finally made my order, its shipment (shipping is free for orders above $60) was delayed slightly due to an out-of-stock item. Other than that, shopping with BeautyFresh was a pleasant experience.

After scouring the Internet for interesting Google hacks and trying close to 20 of them, we have identified five that you need to try out for yourself.

Some of these hacks are purely for entertainment while others keep your life in check.

A cure for the Afternoon lull If you need some entertainment to perk up your afternoon, check out these two games from Google.

For the first, simply type “Zerg Rush” into the search bar and wait for little “OO” icons to scatter on your screen.

You then have to prevent the swarm of flying icons from reaching the end of the page by clicking on them profusely (we do not recommend this game if you’re using a computer mouse that clicks loudly).

The second game is known as “Atari Breakout”. Again, type its name into the Google search bar and click on the image tab to play the game. Bounce the ball with your mouse to destroy the five layers of bricks.

for the Avid cAlorie counterWhether you are on a permanent diet of sorts or just trying to decide which snack is the lesser of the two evils, Google makes the perfect calorie consultant.

For example, perform a search for “Pizza vs Burger” and you will get a comprehensive nutrition breakdown.

stAr trek obsession on Another levelThis one is especially for the Star Trek fanatics out there.

Experience navigating your Google search in Klingon (the language spoken by the Klingons, a type of extra-terrestrial humanoids, in the movie).

Type “/xx-klingon” into your Google search bar, click on the first link and you will be transferred to a familiar Google search site that runs in Klingon! Pretty cool, huh?

stop fAcebook-ingHands up if you’ve ever been stuck in this situation where you start surfing your social media accounts and, before you know it, two hours or more have passed. But your pile of work is still as high as ever.

It’s always sunny in Singapore, so what’s top on my Christmas wish list this year is jetting out to a winter wonderland.

Here are five perfect Christmas destinations that are calling out — and if you’re lucky, you may still be able to book a flight to these white paradises.

HOKKAIDO, JAPANThe year-end is one of the best times to visit Japan, as regions like Hokkaido are coated in a beautiful blanket of snow.

Hokkaido is an enormous region with varying winter climates. So if you’re looking to ski, head to central Hokkaido, which includes Sapporo and Chitose, where heavier snowfalls are often recorded, instead of, say, urban

Hakodate, which sees lesser snowfall.Ski season begins in December, when

temperatures hover around 2 deg C. This chilly weather also makes for a

perfect time to soak in a piping hot onsen (hot spring bath) while admiring the scenery as snow sprinkles down from the sky. The area of Noboribetsu, an hour’s train ride from Sapporo, is best for this activity, as it has numerous onsens, from white sulphur to iron, for you to dip in.

As January and February are the coldest months of the season, the year end is still the best time to enjoy winter before it starts to bite.

EMEI SHAN, CHINAIf you’re planning a trip to China, swing by the UNESCO World Heritage site of Emei Shan (or Mount Emei) in Sichuan, near Chengdu city. It’s normally known for the Leshan Giant Buddha but, come winter, you’re in for a whole new world of beauty.

The best time to visit the park would be late summer and early fall, when the air is clearer — an ideal condition for a no-filter Instagram shot.

The main gateways to Jasper National Park are Vancouver, Edmonton or Calgary. From these cities, take either the VIA Rail or Greyhound bus to the park. Brewster Transportation and Tours also offers tour buses to and from Jasper via Banff along the spectacular Icefields Parkway.

Wintertime is when you can catch this iconic scene at Huangshan.

HUANGSHAN, CHINAFor a different kind of white Christmas, make a stop at the magnificent Huangshan — or Yellow Mountain — region near Shanghai. You may recognise these dramatic mountains from ancient Chinese paintings and carvings, and they take on a magical façade during wintertime.

During the cold year-end, striking peaks shoot out from the beneath the misty sea of clouds, a sight for which Huangshan is most famous.

Best of all, December is the low travel season, with lesser crowds to contend with and cheaper hotels and flights for you to choose from.

For the adventurous traveller, there are hiking tours that can take you up the serene mountains through paths that are cleared every day for your safety. Be sure to pack thick coats and non-slip boots, as the average daily high is 4 deg C.

But if you’d prefer a more relaxing journey through Huangshan, hop on one of the three cable car lines and enjoy the scenic ride to the 1,400m hotel area, where you can then unwind at the Yellow Mountain Hot Springs, which bubble at a cosy 42 deg C.

A titbit for movie buffs: Hong Village at the foot of Huangshan is the setting for Ang Lee’s famous movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

ILULISSAT, GREENLANDSaying that the town of Ilulissat is a wonderful white wonderland is just grazing the tip of the spectacular iceberg.

Resting on the shores of Western Greenland, this colourful ice fjord town is flanked by two astounding views. On one end flows the sprawling waters of Baffin Bay, a marginal sea of the North Atlantic Ocean. On the other, a sculpture-like gallery of icebergs, marking some impressive camping spots, rises up into the sky.

Winter in Ilulissat is also the prime time for dog sledding. Lay on a sled as the dogs whisk you across the powdery snow, and if you listen closely, you can make out the faint cracking and rumbling of the icebergs in the distance.

Famished after your adventure into the frost? Make a pit stop at the town’s eateries, where you can warm up over a simple cup of cocoa or be treated to exquisite fine dining featuring the day’s fresh catches.

LAKE TAHOE SOUTH, UNITED STATESFor many of us tropical urbanites, winter seems to come with its fair share of exciting outdoor activities.

Luang Prabang: City of hidden charmsSlow down and let the Laotian city surprise you with its mix of cultural sights and unexpected adventures

Kneeling in reverence with heads bowed respectfully, we dug our hands into bamboo containers and started offering morsels of sticky rice to the procession of monks who were quickly passing us by.

“Don’t touch the alms bowl. It’s okay if you miss a monk or two,” the words of my Lao guide reverberated in my head as moving saffron robes became a blur before me.

The sheer amount of concentration required for this tradition of Buddhist almsgiving, coupled with the discipline to not flinch even as the piping hot rice burnt my fingers, was an eye-opener for an urbanite like me.

But for the people of Luang Prabang, this ritual takes place daily at sunrise and reflects the sacredness accorded to Buddhism by the city.

Aptly, the name of this former Lao capital also translates literally to “royal Buddha image”.

Undiscovered cUltUral GemsOften overlooked by travellers in favour of its bustling Thai neighbours, Lao has a quiet charm that is all of its own.

Luang Prabang, in particular, lies between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, and offers plenty in terms of culture, food and scenic value.

In fact, the town of Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage site, prized for its seamless mix of traditional architecture and urban structures.

The Royal Palace Museum, a stunning architectural marvel with a mix of traditional Lao motifs and French Beaux Arts styles, gave me a fascinating insight into the humble abode of the late Laotian king Sisavang Vong and his family.

When you’re there, be sure to look out for a mysterious portrait of the king by Russian artist Ilya Glazunov — the king’s feet appears to point straight at you no matter where you stand.

Buddhist temples like the Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Visoun Narath are worth a visit too.

The former stands out for its coloured glass mosaic exterior depicting the tree of life while the latter is the city’s oldest temple with a Lotus Stupa, affectionally termed ‘watermelon stupa’, for its rounded dome.

slow life, Good lifeLife moves at a glacial pace in Luang Prabang, but there is beauty at every turn.

I took a leisurely boat cruise upstream on the Mekong River to the Ban Chan Pottery Village, which allowed me to take in the sights of the local people hard at work as they fired clay pots in earthen ovens.

As I ambled about the village, I witnessed children jostling playfully alongside serious-looking artisans with clay-crusted hands — a heartwarming sight to behold.

The nature-lover in me was also awakened by the breathtaking sight of the three-tiered Kuangsi Waterfall, located about 29km south of Luang Prabang.

Its clear turquoise waters was well worth the short forest trek I made to reach the site.

If you fancy a birds’ eye view of Luang Prabang, take a 20-minute hike up Mount Phousi and enjoy a paranomic view of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers.

maison with a royal historyThe rich history of Luang Prabang is best experienced with a stay in one of the heritage hotels in the city.

I had the fortune to kickstart my travel journey courtesy of Lao Airlines, complete with a stay at the Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel — former home of four-time Laotian Prime Minister Prince Souvanna Phouma.

My room, the Champa Room, or Princess’ Bedroom, had the perfect blend of modern comforts and local touches.

Hanging frames of intricate local textiles added attractive bursts of colour to the 38 sq m spacious suite, which had a separate living area and a bathtub that looked out into a private garden.

Be sure to also try the Prince of Laos Dinner Set, exclusively available at the hotel, which lets you savour the most iconic local dishes in a ten-dish tasting menu.

local laotian flavoUrsUnlike the sweet and sour flavour combinations common in other parts of South-east Asia, Laotian cuisine typically has a heavy dose of umami, because of the commonly-used condiment, padaek, which is made from fermented freshwater fish.

You’ll find padaek in Laotian dishes such as Lao papaya salad and laap, a salad of minced meat.

My personal favourite, however, had to be the khao nom kok, a mildly-sweet coconut pancake with a melt-in-your-mouth consistency — I must’ve devoured more than a dozen during my short stay there.

Apart from traditional Lao cuisine, Luang Prabang is also home to other hidden culinary gems.

On my last night in the city, my host from the hotel took me to a speakeasy-style bar called 525, which turned out to be an unpretentiously chic cocktail bar serving up creative drinks and tasty tapas.

Relaxed and with knots eased from an earlier spa session at the faultless Angsana Spa, I revelled in the evening with a glass of whisky sour and made a silent promise to return to Luang Prabang again.
