A. PARAGRAF SORULARI HAKKINDA GENEL YAKLAŞIMLAR Değerli adaylar, paragraf soruları belki de adayları en çok zorlayan soru başlıklarından bir tanesidir. Lakin bunun sebebi, genel itibariyle Türkçe dahi okuma alışkanlığımızın olmamasıdır. Bundan dolayı adaylarımız İngilizce okuma çalışmasını sadece kelime tabanlı yürüttükleri için yorumlama ve analiz basamakları eksik kalmakta. Aday kelime dağarcığını geliştirmekte, fakat paragraf sorularını gene de yapamamaktadır. Öncelikli olarak bu dersimiz de sizlerle paragraf sorularının genel olarak dayandığı işleyişi soru türlerini yaklaşım tarzlarını ve paragraf sorularının çözümüne dair belli başlı yaklaşımları anlatacağız.

Öncelikli olarak bilinmesi gerekir ki, paragraf soru çözümlerinde takip edilen iki önemli yaklaşım bulunmaktadır. Bunlardan ilki, Direkt paragrafı okuyarak başlamak ve sonrasında sorulara geçmektir. Diğer ve daha yağın olarak kullanılan soru çözme yaklaşımı ise öncelikli olarak sorulara ve soru köklerine odaklanmak sonrasında ise paragrafa geçerek sorularda istenilen detayları y da çıkarımları bulmaya çalışmaktır. Okuma ve anlama yetisi kişiden kişiye değiştiği için istediğiniz yaklaşımı takip edebilirsiniz. Ancak direkt paragraftan okumaya başlamak sizin soruları okuduktan sonra tekrar paragrafa dönmenize neden olacaktır. Bunu engellemek için ise, takip edilecek en kolay yol ise, paragrafı okurken bazı noktaları not almaktır. Hangi noktaların not alınacağı ya da göz önünde tutulması gerektiği ilerleyen bölümlerde anlatılacaktır. Hangi yaklaşımı takip ederseniz edin; unutulmaması gereken en önemli iki nokta paragrafın ve soru köklerinin anlaşılmasıdır. O halde öncelikle soru köklerinin bize ne işaret ettiğine bir değinelim.

Paragraf soru türünde, soru köklerini net soru dolaylı soru, çıkarım, vesaire gibi farklı türlerde gruplayabiliriz. Genel bir hat çizecek olursak;

• Paragrafta yer alan bilgilere göre sorulan BİLGİ soruları

• Paragrafta yer alan bilgiler ışığında ulaşacağımız ÇIKARIMLARIN sorulduğu sorular.

• Paragrafın geneline hâkim olan anlayışın sorulduğu ANA FİKİR soruları.

B. PARAGRAF SORU TÜRÜ SORU KÖKLERİ Yukarıda soru türlerini 3 ana başlık altında sıralamıştık. Şimdi ise bu başlıklar altında gelecek soru köklerinin içeriğine bir göz atalım.

BİLGİ SORU KÖKLERİ

• Özellikle bu soru kökünde THAT ifadesinin ardından bir açıklama gelebilir. O halde bu açıklamaya çok dikkat edilmesi gerekir, çünkü vermeniz gereken cevap bu cümleyle ilgilidir.

YORUM SORU KÖKLERİ

• It is implied in the passage that --- • One can understand from the passage that --- • It can be concluded form the passage that --- • The writer / author concludes that --- • It can be inferred from the passage that ----.

• Paragrafın geneliyle alakalı olabileceği gibi THAT ifadesinin arkasından gelen ifadeyle ilgili de olabilir.

Yukarıda verilen örneklerde en önemli unsur ise THAT ifadesinden sonra gelecek soru kökünün içeriğidir. Çünkü,

Mesela yukarıda yer örnekte “the Marshall Plan” ifadesi kullanılmıştır. Demek oluyor ki sorunun çözümü için paragrafta “the Marshall Plan” ifadesinin geçtiği ya da REFER* edildiği yerlere bakmamız gerekmektedir.

Keza soru kökünün sonrasında yer alan ifade içinde bağlaç gibi anahtar ifadeler de sorulabilir. Örnek olarak yukarıdaki örnekte “regardless of” ifadesi kullanılmış ve “ne kadar tarafsız (impartially) şekilde yazılmış olurlarsa olsun…” denilerek size bir yönlendirmede bulunulmuştur.

Görmeden geçme: “REGARDLESS OF” ifadesinin eş anlamlılarına bir göz atalım “nevertheless, nonetheles, yet, after all, but, despite” Demek oluyor ki soru kökünde bir zıtlık ifadesi bulunmaktadır. Yani “ne kadar tarafsız şekilde yazılmış olurlarsa olsun…” aslında öyle ya da böyle, biraz da olsa taraflılık olması beklenen bir durumdur. Bu ifadeyi de bize E şıkkı vermektedir.

Örnekte yer alan ifadeye bakacak olursak daha karmaşık bir yapı görmek mümkündür. Sorumuz bizden Küresel bankacılık krizinin çözülmesinin hükümetlerle ilişkilendirmesini istemiş ve bir NEDEN* istemektedir.

C. PARAGRAFIN ANALİZ EDİLMESİ YDS’de karşımıza çıkan paragraflar bilinenin aksine tek düze metinler değildir. Soru yazarları bir metinden 4 soru çıkardıklarını düşünecek olursak metin tek paragraf gibi dursa da kendi için de bölümlere ayırılmaktadır. Bu bölümlerinde ekendi aralarında soru getirecek anlam geçişleri taşıdığınıza dikkat edelim. İsterseniz öncelikli olarak bir paragrafın işleyişine bakalım.

Görmeden Geçme: Görüldüğü gibi akademik metinlerde beklenen metin işleyişi böyledir. Ama YDS çıkan her sorunun bu işleyişe sahip olmadığını unutmayalım. Örneğin, belirli bir kimsenin geçmişinden bahsederken ve hayatından kesitler bir araya getirirken bu şekilde bir grafik oluşturamayız.

SONUÇ


Yukarıdaki örnekler 2013 YDS sınavından alınmıştır. Sorularda görüldüğü üzere (kırımızı olarak belirtilen) soruların her birisi paragrafın farklı bir bölümünü işaret etmektedir.

O zaman buradan anladığımız nokta paragrafta yer alan bölümleri birbirinden ayırabilirsek işte o zaman soruların tam olarak nereden geldiğini de görebiliriz demektir. Bunun için ise uygulanması gereken şey ise TEXT SCAN (paragraf tarama) yaklaşımı olabilir. Hızlı bir şekilde kelimeler üzerinden paragrafı tarayarak bölümlerine ulaşabiliriz.

Many athletes credit drugs with improving their performance, but some of them may want to thank their brain instead.
