Do you know what the largest, meat-eating mammal1 on land is? It isthe polar bear. Polar bears can weigh2 between 150 and 650 kilograms. In fact, the largest polar bear weighed 1,002 kilograms! Some peoplethink that polar bears eat penguins. But this isn’t true. Penguins onlylive in the Antarctic (South Pole). But the polar bears’ home is the Arctic(North Pole).

Polar bears are intelligent3 and beautiful animals. They are as whiteas snow. This makes it hard to see them if there is a lot of snow and ice.You can only see their black eyes and nose. Did you know that a polarbear’s skin is also black? But we can’t see it because of its thick fur.Polar bears need thick fur to protect4 themselves from the cold. The temperature5 in the Arctic can be as low as -69℃!

Polar bears are excellent6 swimmers. They can swim about 100 kilometers without resting! They are also very fast. They can swim as fastas 10 kilometers an hour! This is very important because it helps them catchtheir food. Polar bears love to eat seals the most. A polar bear can smell aseal more than 32 kilometers away.

The polar bear population is shrinking. Sadly, polar bears are hunted fortheir skin and fur. Fortunately, many northern countries have laws to protect these wonderful animals. Hopefully, their population will increasein the future. <239 words>

Read and think about your guesses.

On August 12, 1972, a man in Southern England saw something strange. The man said, “Suddenly, I heard a noise. It seemed like something pusheddown the wheat. That night, there was no wind. I looked around. Thewheat was bent1 in the shape of a circle.” This strange circle was almost 10meters wide and appeared2 very quickly. No one knew what made this circle.

Since then, thousands of similar designs have appeared. They are called“crop circles” because they are made in fields of crops.3 Most crop circleshave been found in England. They come inmany different shapes and sizes. But theyare usually made of circles that are verylarge. Crop circles are made by bendingcrops like corn or wheat. The crops are notbroken. They continue growing normallythat way.

The crop circle you can see above was made in only 15 minutes. The design has 149 perfect circles and is about 125 meters wide. Itwas discovered4 on July 8, 1996 by a Royal Air Force (British) pilot. He didn’t see anything when he first flew over the field.5 But whenhe returned 15 minutes later, the crop circle was there.

There are many thoughts about these circles. Some people thinkthat all the circles are made by humans. Other people think that thecircles are caused by energy or wind. And still other people believeUFOs or aliens cause them.

What is making these designs and why? Nobody knows for sure.It is one of the biggest mysteries.6

Imagine that your house is dark.

The television, computer, stereo, and

telephone do not work. The electric

lights, fans, and heaters do not work, either. Isn’t that a hard way to live? Now

guess how many people live that way. Believe it or not, the number is two billion.

That’s one-third of the people on the earth! And in the future, more people may

have to live that way. It is because most of the energy1

we use now cannot be

used again. Someday it will be gone.

There is another big problem with this kind of energy. It causes pollution.2

The energy is made by burning coal, oil, or gas. Doing this pollutes our air, water,

and soil. It also causes global warming.

Clean Energy

But there is a solution.3

It is called “renewable4

energy,” or “clean

energy.” Clean energy borrows energy from the earth, and then gives it back.

Clean energy takes energy from the sun (solar energy), wind, and water.

Solar cells are used to make electricity5

from solar energy. Wind is used

to turn motors on a windmill.6

And moving water (like rivers or waterfalls)

is used to turn motors in a dam. The motors make electricity.

Fortunately, it is getting cheaper to use clean energy. And many more

people want to use it. They don’t want to live in a polluted world. And they

don’t want to live without energy someday. So it’s time to use clean energy.

It’s better for us and better for our world.
