“Here's to a bloody war. Many to go and few to come back!”

(A toast of officers hoping for advancement; from 18th/19th century England when the country was propelled by youth bulges as today are Gaza or Afghanistan.)

DEFINITION OF A YOUTH BULGE

30 to 40 % of nation’s males belong to the ”fighting age“ cohorts from 15 to 29 years (UK: 20%; US: 22%). The young men do not live in abject poverty but are permanently better fed and schooled.

A youth bulge is preceded by a children bulge defined by 33 % to 48 % of all males in the age bracket of 0 to 14 years (UK: 18%; US: 21%). The boys are sufficiently fed and schooled.

Page 5: Powerpoint Gunnar Heinsohn

The member of a youth bulge:

(1) is agitated by common adolescent irritation and idealism that also afflicts an only son, (2) is demographically superfluous, i.e., cannot count inheriting a position or a business, (3) may be out of work or stuck in a mean job,(4) has no access to a legal sex life before a position can earn him enough to provide for a family.

Six typical exits: (1) Emigration (non-violent colonization) with high potential for terror if ambition is stalled in new country too.(2) Violent crime (met by the authorities with lower requirements for death penalty and/or extralegal execution).(3) Rebellion or putsch by young men with access to army equipment.(4) Civil war and/or revolution in which the young decimate each other as freedom fighters and law defenders.(5) Genocide at home to take over the positions of the slaughtered.(6) Conquest as precondition of violent colonization (frequently accompanied by genocide abroad).

First Prediction of a Youth Bulge Triggered Civil War: EL SALVADOR

Population Per Capita Income Total Fertility

1925 1.3 million 1940 1.6 million1960 2.5 million 1.427 $/capita 6.81 children/woman

1960-1972: Increase of per capita income by 27%. In 1965 [6.85 children/woman], 130.000 Salvadorean settlers invade Honduras. A minor war kills 2.000. Civil war starts in 1975.

1975 4.1 million WAR 1.760 $/capita 6.10 children/woman

1981-1992: Peak of battles with 70.000 dead. Transposed on the NL’s population (13,6 million against Salvador’s 4 million in 1975) nearly 240,000 Dutchmen would have been killed - 20.000 annually.

1993 5.6 million PEACE 3.700 $/capita 3.6 children/woman2006 6.8 million 4.700 $/capita 3.1 children/woman

2 million Salvadoreans in USANADA take pressure out of the kettle back home.

LESSONS OF EL SALVADOR

As peace activists we may promise that the victory over hunger will also bring victory over war, and triumph for democracy.

Youth bulge analysis, however, shows again and again that when hunger

ends and jobs remain scarce, the killing starts in earnest.

Though hunger is a terrible fate it does not pose a military threat. For bread you beg. For a position you may shoot.

Page 9: Powerpoint Gunnar Heinsohn

DEMOGRAPHIC DEFINITION OF ASYMMETRIC CONFLICT THAT IS OMITTED IN STRATEGY DEBATES

Fighting to the death is a well researched asymmetric threat. Yet, it is different from fighting to the death of superfluous

sons that the other side simply does not have

Page 10: Powerpoint Gunnar Heinsohn

______________________________________________________________________________________Out of 1,000 men in fighting age (15-29) worldwide were raised in (figures rounded):

Thus, Germany-Austria-Hungary’s share of fighting age males was, in 1914, not only two times higher than the US’s share will be in 2020. It was also composed differently. Therefore, the two Behemoths could sacrifice 2.5 million young men in WWI (1914-1918) and still carry on, during the 1920s, with paramilitary militias counting in the millions (born 1898 to 1916).

IRAQ: The persistent absence of demographic intelligence

Baker-Hamilton-Report (12/2006, P: 61): “While the United States has been able to acquire good and sometimes superb tactical intelligence on al Qaeda in Iraq, our government still does not understand very well either the insurgency in Iraq or the role of the militias”. Demography is never mentioned.

Old holy books or Young angry men? DOES RELIGION MATTER?

The young Muslims in these nations turned into Islamists for the same reason

Spain’s conquistadors – called secundones (second or further sons) in the 16th century – turned from Christians into Christianists. In both cases religions is hijacked

in order to advance secular ambitions.

Tunisia’s Islamists born 1950-1970 (7 children per woman) are more occupied with emigration than terror (centered 1972 to 1995) when total fertility is down to 3. Today, a Tunisian woman in France – induced by generous allowances – has more children than a Tunisian woman in Tunisia.

Today’s Iran: A demographic paper tiger

Iran’s President Ahmadinejad on 23 October 2006:“I am against saying that two children are enough. Our country has […] the capacity for many children to grow in it. It even has the capacity for 120 million people. Westerners have got problems. Because their population growth is negative, they are worried and fear that if our population increases, we will triumph over them.”

YOUTH BULGE PARADOXES

You are damned if you do, damned if you don’t, and damned if you have to.

The right to engage in demographic armament – i.e. raising seven or more children per family, thereby creating a national youth bulge that in turn creates conditions that lead to violence and aggression – is protected under every international law.

Intervening against demographic armament constitutes the international crime of genocide.*

If youth bulge nations begin annihilating their minorities, failure to render assistance to the victims will make you an accomplice to genocide.**

If youth bulge nations threaten your country, you must let them strike the first blow before international law will permit you to take military action against the aggressor.

In any case you will not be allowed to take measures against the youth bulge that caused the aggression, or against any youth bulges that may occur in the future.

STRATEGY to 2020 First Principle DO NOT INTERVENE WHILST A YOUTH BULGE RUNS ITS COURSE!  Second Principle CUT ALL FOREIGN AID FORDEMOGRAPHIC ARMAMENT! Third Principle TURN A YOUTH BULGE DRIVEN WAR BACK INTO A CIVIL WAR! Fourth Principle LEAVE NATION BUILDING TO THE END OF A YOUTH BULGE!
