High density polyethylene (HDPE)BOSS pipe is a proven performer inthe municipal, industrial and forestrypipe markets. Engineered for gravityflow systems, a wide range ofBOSS pipe designs are available tomeet specific standard and projectrequirements. Performanceadvantages of HDPE include:

    1. StrengthThe corrugated exterior provides this

product with its inherent minimumpipe stiffness of 320 kPa or 210 kPa.The smooth inner wall provideslongitudinal stiffness which enablesalignment and grade to be maintainedin the trench during installation.

    2. Impact ResistanceBOSS pipes take the knocks and bumpsof handling, moving and installationwith ease. The combination ofnon-brittle HDPE and its uniquecorrugated exterior makes BOSSpipe capable of sustaining impactin both warm weather usage andcold weather installations.

    3. UV ResistanceBOSS pipe contains a minimum of 2%carbon black additive to protect theproduct from ultraviolet light. This givesBOSS pipe maximum weather resistancein applications where continuousexposure to the elements is expected.

    4. Chemical ResistanceHDPE has the highest level ofchemical resistance of all traditionalsewer products. BOSS pipe brings the

gravity flow sewer market the sameexceptional performance that HDPEhas exhibited in other applications, remaining tough and resistant underconditions that could seriouslydamage pipe made of otherconventional materials.

    5. Recommended pH RangeHDPE material provides excellentresistance to both acidic and alkalineenvironments with strong acidsthrough all bases, pH 1.25 to 14.

    6. Abrasion ResistanceAbrasion is the wearing away of a pipematerial surface, caused by an abrasivebed load (gravel, rock or sharp stones)being carried by the flow. Tests indicate

that HDPE pipe is highly resistant toabrasion, giving it a significantadvantage over other pipe materials inboth acidic and abrasive environments.

    BOSS PIPEAdvantages for the Contractor

The design and construction ofBOSS product offer a distinct weightadvantage over conventional sewerpipe. They provide ease of handling, positioning, installing and connectingthat conventional pipes can not match.

At less than 10% the weight ofconcrete pipe throughout the fullrange of products, BOSS pipeaffords the contractor theseimportant benefits:

    1. Savings on InstallationDue to its light weight, less manpowerand lighter machinery is needed totransport, handle and connect BOSSpipe compared to concrete pipe. That'sreal savings and real value added!

    2. Fittings and AccessoriesBOSS pipe comes complete with afull range of fittings. Both mouldedfittings and adapters are available,as well as an extensive selection ofmade-to-order fabricated fittingsto suit special project needs.

Armtec carries an extensive lineof Nyloplast engineered surfacedrainage products including in-linedrains and drainbasins. A completecatalogue, detailing sizes and gratetypes is available from your localArmtec Sales Representative.

    3. Faster InstallationSix metre standard lengths are easilyhandled and installed using minimalequipment. Comparative productionrate monitoring shows that BOSS pipecan be installed nearly 25% faster

than the same diameter concrete pipe.4. Impact ToughnessBOSS pipe is highly resistant to therigors of installation handling inCanada's tough environment. BOSSpipe can be installed with confidencein the hottest of summer or thecoldest of winter conditions.

    5. Safer HandlingAt less than 10% the weight permetre of concrete pipe, BOSS pipegives the handler and installer a bigsafety advantage. For example a2.4 m length of 900 mm diameterconcrete pipe weighs more than2,400 kg (5,290 lbs.), while an equallength of 900 mm diameter BOSSpipe weighs less than 100 kg (220 lbs.)

    6. Quick On-Site CuttingBOSS pipe can be trimmed to lengthin seconds, using cutting tools foundon most municipal construction sites.

    The key to successful installation

of BOSS pipe is the achievementof stable and permanent supportthrough the selection and compactionof proper embedment materials.Complete guidelines and procedurescan be found in CSA B182.11"Recommended Practice forInstallation of ThermoplasticDrain, Storm, and Sewer Pipeand Fittings."

    1. Foundation

The pipe must reston a smooth, stable foundation, free of rocksand clumps.

    2. BeddingBedding shouldconsist of compactedwell graded granularmaterial, levelled tothe proper grade.

    3. HaunchingHaunching shouldbe the samematerial asbedding, placedand compacted insuccessive lifts of150 mm, up to thespringline of the pipe. Compactto 95% Standard Proctor Density.

    4. Initial BackfillBackfill should be the same materialas for haunching, extending from thespringline to 300 mm above crownof pipe. For pipe diameters less than300 mm, this dimension may be

reduced to one pipe diameter, butnot less than 150 mm. Compact to95% Standard Proctor Density.

    5. Final BackfillSelect native materials may beused depending on the application.Do not place large rocks or clumpswithin 600 mm of pipe.

ARMTEC FILTER SOCKArmtec filter sock bridges theperforations and prevents problemsized particles from flowing into thepipe and clogging the drain. Someextremely small (colloidal) particles

pass through the sock, and out thedrain line suspended in the water. This is desirable because the removalof these particles enhances the soil'spermeability near the drain lines.

A selection of non-woven geotextile sock is also availablefor critical applications.

Armtec also carries a complete line of geotextile productsin rolls for a complete trench wrap french drain package.

Armtec can recommend material type for all applications.

    GEOTEXTILES

Armtec Limited is Canadas leadingmanufacturer of subdrainage tubing.High density polyethylene tubing isthe most cost effective material forsubdrainage applications. Armtectubing provides both low initial costand significant installation savings.

Tubing is available in solid, perforated and perforatedwith filter sock.

Drainage systems frequently fail infine grained sand and coarse silt soilsbecause particles enter the line insufficient quantities to block the drain.

Armtec's SOCK filter is a tough onepiece knitted polyester envelopematerial that fits over the tubingto prevent clogging.

Without the benefit of filter, drainagesystems soon plug in areas with finegrained soils.
