Abstract

Cultural Variables in the Creation and Development

of Islamic Arts Until the End of The Third Hijri Century

Supervised by: Prof. Dr. Idham Hannash

The purpose of this study is to analyze the cultural variables contributing to the formation of

Islamic Arts, such variables are divided into two main groups:

Pre- Islamic Variables: local cultures in Syria, Iraq and The Arabic Peninsula

contributed to the formation of most art and architectural elements

Post-Islamic Variables: the new Islamic Elements formation a new culture such as the

Quran and the Mosque

The researcher also examines the discourse of Islamic Arts, leading into a redefinition of

Islamic Arts. The study concludes that Islamic Arts are part of The Arts of Al Mashriq, as the

cultural and Artistic elements forming Islamic Arts are local to the Mashriq and have

contributed clearly to forming arts after the emergence of Islam. According to the study, the

term Islamic Art is suitable for describing Religious Arts, a subgroup of Arts of the Mashriq.

To reach that conclusion, the study was based on a qualitative analytical method, examining a

number of mosques to demonstrate that the classical mosque model was formed around the

third hijri century in Al Mashriq.
