Survey indicateshousehold changesAccording to the latest results ofStatsSA’s General Household Survey(GHS), life is somewhat better forthose living in the Rainbow Nation.

The results indicate that more peoplerely on state coffers because the percent-age of individuals who benefited from so-cial grant, has increased dramatically. The survey, which was conducted be-

tween January and December 2013, fur-ther indicates that 73,5% of persons aged5–24 attended educational institutions, which is about the same as in 2002.A lack of money for fees, remains the

primary reason for a large proportion ofindividuals in this age group who werenot studying. The GHS also reveals that public clin-

ics and hospitals were the first choice ofalmost seven-tenths of households, whenmembers fell ill or got injured.By comparison, almost a quarter

(24,2%) of households indicated that theywould go to private doctors.Nationally, the majority of households

rated the quality of water-related servic-

es they received as ‘good’.Only 1,7%ofhouseholds in theWestern

Cape issued a complaint aboutwater thatsmelled bad.The percentage of households with no

toilets or bucket toilets decreased by5,3%. However, the number of house-holds that have access to better sanita-tion facilities has improved.More than one-quarter of households

that shared toilet facilities complainedabout the poor hygiene, where the restfelt that their physical safety was threat-ened when making use of facilities. The percentage of households for

which refuse was removed at least oncea week increased to 63,5%.Concurrently, the percentage of house-

holds that had to rely on their own refusedumps or communal refuse dumps re-spectively, decreased. There remains large disparities how-

ever, between rural and urban areas. Most households in metropolitan and

urban areas rely on weekly curb side re-moval, whereas only 6,9% of rural house-holds made use of this.

You the Entrepreneur: TheEntrepreneurial spiritDAVID MALHERBE

Do you have what ittakes to be an entre-preneur? Or is it some-thing you need to beborn with?

I think it’s time weopenour eyes to the real-ity that finding a securejob becomes more diffi-cult by the day. Anumber of factors locally andabroad contribute to this situation.Protests and strikes to demand

jobs will not solve the problem. Itwill rather be a threat to existingjobs.Governmentandexistingbusi-nesses cannot supply in the tremen-dous demand for job opportunities. Therefore we need more new busi-nesses.Unfortunatelyalmost everyoneof

us grew upwith the notion of “If on-

ly I could findagood job.”It is time that we changeour thinking and teachour children likewise. In-stead of looking for a job,ask “What can I do formyself?”Statistics South Africa

recently announced thatyouth unemployment inSouth Africa has grownto 36,1%–a3,4%increasesince2008.Eventhedepu-

ty president emphasised the seri-ousness of this problem in hisspeech on Youth day. But althoughyouth unemployment is such a bigissue in SouthAfrica, today’s youthare seldom willing to do just aboutanything to earn a living.Although many South African

youths are unemployed, the so-called “American dream” of adream job that will be the answerto all their aspirations and goals

stays fixed in their minds. Unfortu-nately for the large majority, it willstay a dream. What can you do for yourself?

Most say that they do not haveenough money to start a business.Fact is that many successful entre-preneurs started out with almostnothing. Find something you cansell and you have a business. Do notthink you need business premisesto start. Most business happensthrough sales people withoutpremises.Don’t say “I cannot sell.” Many

people who once said, “I’ll never bein sales”, myself included, latermade a good living from sales. Themost important quality you need isan entrepreneurial spirit.Believe in yourself and bewilling

to do just about anything to makeit. This will be your best chance to

realise your dreams.
