New hotline to tackle thechallenges of drunk drivingSitting behind bars without structuredrehabilitation interventions does noth-ing to change one’s behaviour.

Thousands of sentenced offenders aresent to prison and are later released withthe samebehavioural problems or, at times, problems that have been exacerbated.Being locked upwith hardened criminals

who exhibit extreme criminal behaviourand thought patterns, hardly serves as anencouragement to behavioural change. The National Institute for Crime

Preventionand theReintegrationofOffend-ers (Nicro) has joined forces with South Af-rican Breweries (SAB) and Arrive Alive ina unique alcohol and road offences initia-tive geared at addressing drunk driving.A dedicated hotline to assist South Afri-

can drivers facing criminal charges withregards to road traffic offences, such asdriving under the influence of intoxicatingsubstances and reckless and negligent driv-ing, will be launched in the Western Capetoday, 21 November, and run through until31 January.

By calling this 24-hour hotline, DrivingUnder the Influence (DUI) offenders willgain access to immediate, critical supportand possible inclusion into Nicro interven-tions such as counselling, the road offencespanel programme and community service. These interventions allow DUI offenders

(who have been carefully assessed andfound suitable) to participate in needs-based behavioural and psycho-educationalinterventions and programmes, either as adiversion or non-custodial sentencing op-tion.All the interventions dealing with DUI

offenders are specifically designed toimprove the offender’s awareness of thedangers and consequences of driving underthe influence, as well as reckless andnegligent driving.Soraya Solomon, Nicro’s CEO, emphasis-

es that this programme is not a soft optionor a get-out-of-jail-free card.“Althoughtheconsequencesof thedrunk-

en driving offence will not involve going toprison, such offenders will nevertheless beheld accountable and, if sentenced to a non-

custodial option, will receive a criminalrecord.“Theywillberequiredto takeresponsibil-

ity, make amends and face up to theconsequences of their actions,” she ex-plains.In addition to having a positive influence

on reducing drunk driving, improving roadsafety, and equippingDUI offenders to steerclear of further problems with alcoholabuse, this alcohol and road offences initia-tive will also dramatically reduce thework-load and lessen the burden on the formalcriminal justice system.Nicro’s 24-hour DUI hotline number is

072 184 6483 and will only service the West-ern Cape.Nicro firmly believes that incarceration

is not the best option for offenderswhohavebeen convicted of DUI offences. For enquiries about the hotline, the road

offences panel programme or other Nicroservices, please contact Arina Smit, thecampaign spokesperson, manager of theclinical unit and programme design and de-velopment on 082 200 6400.

Drakenstein Gazette General - Algemeen Friday 21 November 20144

SSttaarr SSiiggnnssStar Signs22 December to21 JanuaryCAPRICORN

There is a friendly, cooperative, harmonious tone to the interactionsyou have now. It is a good time for social activities and for getting intouch with friends. You avoid heavy discussions and do not want to

focus on dry, practical matters. Reading light fiction, going out to see aromantic comedy, or simply sharing a pleasant time with someone you

like is more in tune with your feelings now.

21 January To20 FebruaryAQUARIUS

Confusion, inability to focus on mundane tasks, poorunderstanding or miscommunication between yourself

and others, and the desire to evade realresponsibilities and challenges are negative potentialsfor you now. You are more sensitive, impressionable,

dreamy, or idealistic at this time also.

20 February to21 MarchPISCES

A fast pace, with many letters, phone calls, errands, meetings, or discussions, is on the agenda. You may feelmentally restless, impatient, and overly eager to get your

own ideas across. Also, a situation may arise which requiresyou to say what is on your mind, to make a decision, or to

clearly voice your personal opinion on some issue.

21 March to21 AprilARIES

You are more distressed than usual over anydissonance in your environment or personal

relationships, and you are inclined to avoid seriousdiscussions or real disagreements with others. Also,

challenging mental work and concentration isdifficult for you now.

21 April to21 MayTAURUS

This is a very pleasant time for you. You have a need to escape thehustle and bustle of daily life, relax, and collect yourself. Taking astroll through the woods or visiting a beautiful lake, mountainretreat, or beach appeals to you now. You also enjoy casual

activities like strolling through art galleries and markets, buyingsome art work, or visiting friends.

22 June to23 JulyCANCER

In one way or another, this is a time when you find ways to implementyour dreams. The benefits do not come to you on a silver platter. It isup to you to use the tools and materials that are made available toyou. Now you have the chance to do more and advance. Take full

advantage of the opportunity and apply yourself energetically. You cancarve out a much better life for yourself at this time.

21 May to22 JuneGEMINI

Self-discipline, training, persevering through a dry orslow period, and working quietly or in meager

circumstances are themes in this time period. You have theability and stamina to concentrate, to work carefully andthoroughly, and to accomplish something modest, yet of

real practical value and substance now.

23 Julie to24 AugustLEO

This is a time for you to shine! You have an extrameasure of energy and confidence now and will makea strong impression on those in your environment. This is a very good time to go for a job interview, meet the public, or simply go out and be seen. You

will be noticed more than usual.

24 August to23 SeptemberVIRGO

This is a time for being with people and especiallygiving something of yourself and your talents toothers. You want to be seen and noticed. You

receive appreciation and a positive response andpossibly an opportunity or personal contact which

will be quite beneficial.

23 September to23 OctoberLIBRA

Your thoughts are inclined to be heavy, critical, and pessimistic atthis time, so it would be good to realize that you are only seeing

part of the picture and perhaps seek the advice of an older, experienced person who has passed through some of the

challenges you face. This can also be a time of leaving, separatingfrom friends, and choosing a new way.

23 October to23 NovemberSCORPIO

Dreams, wishes, and fantasies about love are strong now, and youmay be infatuated with someone you meet at this time, only to bedisappointed later when you discover this person does not fulfill

all of your expectations. You are simply not seeing peopleobjectively now. Your imagination is very active and creative, however, and so is your yearning for something beautiful.

23 November to22 DecemberSAGITTARIUS

Meeting people that can benefit your career, gettingtogether with colleagues, or getting to know your superiors

on a more personal, friendly basis is quite likely at thistime. Take advantage of all opportunities to socialize withthe people you have professional ties with for the outcome

is likely to be quite positive.

Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C. Wash and dry the chicken with paper towel. Loosen (but not break) the skin. Combine thestuffing ingredients together to form a crumbly paste. Gently push a generous amount of stuffing under the skin of each breast.

Place onto a baking tray.NOTE: at this stage you could add some par-boiled thinly sliced potatoes in the tray, cover with rack and place breasts on top. Thetatoes will get all the flavours from the chicken. Rub with a little more olive oil and season with just freshly ground black pepper

as the feta is salty already.Roast for 40 minutes. Serve on a bed of wilted baby spinach with roasted potatoes, couscous or mashed potatoes.

If you prefer chicken breast fillets: With a bit of butter and oil in a hot pan, brown the breasts briefly on both sides, top eachbreast with the stuffing and roast in a 200°C oven for 10 minutes, not a minute. Without a topping roast for 8 minutes.

You the entrepreneur: Customer frustrationDAVID MALHERBE

In the news lastweekwe learnedof an irate customer who put upa huge banner to air his frustra-tion with a cellphone companythat would not attend to irregu-larities regarding his cellphoneaccount.

No one in the company was will-ing to solve a problem which thecustomer had no control over. The problem with many big companies to-

day is that the entrepreneurial approach tothe customer no longer exists. Too much dis-tance comes between the customer and theperson in the company who can fix the con-cern. In the above-mentioned case, the cus-tomer was simply unable to speak to anyonethat really cared.

It became fashionable to havea telephone system that almostbars you from speaking to a hu-man being. “For accounts pressone; for customer care, presstwo” etc. The customer care thatIwould like to receive, is ahumanbeing who picks up the phone atthe other end and allowing me tospeak to someone who can solvemy problem. We all know the frustration of

holding on while the machine is busy finish-ing its story and then having to listen to mu-sic and advertisements for another 10 min-utes until you can finally speak to a humanbeing. Yet, when our ownbusinesses expand, what do we do?We install the same system that we abhor

in other businesses, increasing the distancebetween our customers and the person in the

company who can fix the problem. There is a saying: “people support people,

not causes or organisations.” Many peopledo business with a certain company becauseof the friendly and good service of some indi-vidual within the company, that they havebuilt a relationship with over time. Thus, if you have a small business, see to

it that you focus on customer care that is per-sonal and speedy. This is one of the great ad-vantages of a small business; you can actmuchquicker thanabigbusiness in the sameindustry.See to it therefore that you render superior

service and always make the needs and com-plaints of your customers a priority.David Malherbe is a business and career

Setting up shop with a friendThe ideaof startingabusinesswithafriendwillalwaysbeap-pealing to most people be-causeof the shared level ofun-derstanding and trust. How-ever, the reality is that gettinginto business with a friend isoften an emotional ratherthan a business decision.SanjeevOrie, CEOofValue-

Adds at FNB Business, sayseven though it seems ideal tostart a business with a friend, there needs to be rationalthinking so that decisions aremade for the good of thebusiness rather than thefriendship.“A joint business venture between friends

requires a lot of emotional maturity becausebusiness decisions are neither fair nor just attimes. For an example, if one friend insists onbeing in charge of financeswhen he or she hasnoadequateskills toproperlymanagesuchdu-ties, the other partner will need to make a ra-tional decision to avoid a potential disaster incash flow management.”According toOrie, the trick to ensuring that

a business venture with a friend becomes suc-cessful is to take care of the following basics:

) Define the partnershipIt is advisable to understand what the part-

nership entails and how much decision-mak-ing power each partner will have.

) Formalise the partnershipGet theservicesofanattorneytodraftabusi-

ness agreement to guidehowtheentitywill op-erate.Trynot tohaveany“greyareas”becausethose often lead to business conflict.

) Clarify rolesDecide who does what so that you do not

tread on each other’s territories. We all haveindividual strengths, so it will be better tomatch each partner to responsibilities thatcomplement their skills set.

) Do not assume that one of you has to be the

managerEven though the business idea

may be yours, you might nothave the right skills to run it. Ifboth partners feel that a thirdparty may be better equipped torun the business, the best ideawould be to appoint that personas opposed to taking an uncalcu-lated risk. Delegatingmanagement duties does notmean you will lose ownership ofthe business.

) Friendship takes a back-seatBusiness decisions should not

be made to simply preserve thefriendship, they should be maderegardlessof the friendship. This

is often easier if there is a third party that hasdecision-making powers without any actualownership in the business.

) Keep all hands out of the cookie-jarThe business is not your personal loan ser-

vice so it should not be the first place to turntowhenneedingmoney. Ifabusiness isprofita-ble, both partners will obviously make somemoney but they still need to ensure that thebusiness isan independententityandnot their“cash-cow” for financial needs that will notbenefit its growth.

) Exiting the partnershipIf one partnerwants to sell their share of the

businesswhile theotherwishestocontinueop-erating, thereneeds tobeaclause thatwill gov-ern how this happens, otherwise a misunder-standing could lead to conflict.According to Orie, if a business partnership

betweenfriendsiswellthoughtout, therecouldbe great benefits.“It is important to remember that starting

a business should not be about friends butshould simply be based on a viable businessideaandbothpartiesneed tohave theemotion-al maturity to sustain a business venture. Some of theworld’s best entities such asApplewere started by friends,” he says.
