Please go to www.capital-districtconsulting.com and register today.  The course fee is $225.00 and classes will run from 7:00-9:00 pm on April 3, 10, 21, 24, 28 and May 1.  Classes will be held in the conference room of CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services in Clifton Park, located at 5 Municipal Plaza—Suite 3. Saratoga County Animal Shelter

Open From Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm For Adoptions

Mittens - I am a 1 year old spayed female. I am litter box trained, good with kids, and dogs. I need to be the only cat in the home. I was

brought to the shelter because I wasn't getting along with the other cats.

Simon - I am a 8 year old neutered Siamese. I am litter box trained, good with kids and other cats. I was brought to the shelter because my owners were moving.

Izzy - is a 3 year old spayed Catahoula Leopard Mix. She was sur-rendered because the previous owner couldn't walk her on a leash, she was older. She is housebroken and likes kids. She also likes to give kisses. She does need to be the only animal in the house. Since she has been here at the shelter, she walks better on a leash, even better with a harness, but is control able with just a collar. She does like to keep herself busy, so rawhides or chew toys would be good for her.

Trixie - is an adult spayed female. She came in as a stray and is very sweet. She is believed to be housbroken, she goes to the bathroom outside and rarely goes in her kennel. She can be shy, but opens up pretty quickly. She gets along with kids and isn't very hyper, she is a very mellow laid back dog. She doesn't get along with dogs and we are unsure how she would do with cats.

Leah - She is a 3 year old spayed Pitbull Mix. Leah was brought to the shelter in May of 2013 because she went after the male dog in the home while the young grandkids were over. While at the shelter, Leah has been a very sweet girl. She is very loving and likes to be pet. A cute habit she has is when she sleeps, she lays flat on her stomach with her front and back legs stretched straight out. Leah was housebroken while in her previous home. She still goes to the bathroom outside, but overnight she does go in her kennel. Getting Leah on a proper feeding and bathroom schedule, will get her routine. On a leash Leah is a puller, so we recommend using a harness. Keep in mind, Leah has been in the shelter since May, so she has pent up energy that can't be properly released everyday. After proper exercise , the pulling should decrease. She also loves to give kisses. Outside Leah loves to run around and play ball. She is a perfect dog for a family that likes to go for hikes and walks.

Cubby - I am a 10 year old neutered male. I am litter box trained, good with kids, other cats, and dogs. I was brought to the shelter due to family allergies.

BUYING YOUR NEXT CARBuyers often fi nd the process of fi nding a new car fun. Test driving vehicles and playing with all of the gadgets that to-day’s increasingly tech-heavy vehicles have to off er can be akin to kids visiting a candy store and being given carte blanche to fi ll up their baskets.

But as enjoyable as fi nding a new car can be, the fi nancial commitment that such a purchase requires can make the process somewhat nerve-wracking as well. Buyers often as-sign the most risk to preowned vehicles, and rightfully so. But some buyers even regret their purchases after buying a new car, whether the car does not suit their lifestyle as much as they had hoped or the vehicle simply isn’t living up to the expectations drivers had for it at the time of purchase. Savvy buyers will consider the following factors before taking the keys to their next new cars.

* Additional costs: Many new car shoppers plan to fi nance or lease their vehicles, but the down payment and monthly payment is not the only number buyers must confi rm before buying a vehicle. After the purchase price and monthly pay-ments have been fi gured out, the two most signifi cant costs buyers must consider are insurance and gas. Some vehicles cost more to insure than others, and the cost of a policy will

depend on more than just a buyer’s personal driving history. The vehicle’s safety features, where a driver lives and the type of vehicle, both its make and model and the category it fi ts into (i.e., sports car, luxury vehicle, etc.), are all going to be used to determine the cost of an insurance policy.

Buyers also must consider how much a vehicle will cost to fuel up before making a fi nal decision. Many a driver has grinned when driving a brand new SUV off a deal-ership lot, only to frown on

that fi rst trip to the fi lling station. Insurance companies typi-cally provide free estimates to prospective customers, so do your homework on the diff erent makes and models you’re considering, getting an insurance quote for each vehicle. In addition, consider the expected fuel costs of each vehicle be-fore making a decision.

* Reputation: Thanks to the Internet, today’s vehicle buyers have a valuable tool at their disposal that those of yester-year rarely had: their fellow drivers. When considering cer-tain makes and models, go online to see what fellow drivers and professional reviewers have to say about a given vehicle. Sites like Edmunds.com and Safecar.gov off er professional as-sessments of various makes and models, while various mes-sage boards exist to allow drivers to review the performance of their vehicles. Such resources are invaluable and can paint a realistic picture of what it might be like to own and drive a particular automobile.

* Resale value: While selling a car you don’t even own yet is probably not foremost on your mind, it is important to con-sider a car’s potential resale value before buying it. The high costs of new vehicles has pushed many buyers out of the new car market, making preowned vehicles a more aff ordable and

attractive option. So considering a car’s potential resale value before buying it new is a smart move that can pay dividends down the road when you’re back on the market for a new vehicle. Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com) is a valuable resource to gauge the resale value of vehicles, and buyers can even cal-culate the resale value of a car over its fi rst fi ve years. This can help consumers determine which options to get on their new cars and even help to govern their driving habits in an eff ort to keep the vehicle’s resale value as high as possible.

When buying a new vehicle, it can be tempting to buy the most visually stunning or gadget-heavy vehicle on the deal-ership lot. But buyers should consider more than just appear-ance and accessories before buying their next new car.

Prospective buyers should consider a host of factors before purchasing a new vehicle.

DID YOU KNOW?The automotive industry has long been a male-dominated industry. Things could begin to shift after the actions taken by one major automaker. In late 2013, Mary Barra was named the chief executive offi cer for General Motors. Barra, who has worked for GM in various capacities for the past 33 years, be-comes the fi rst woman ever to lead a major automaker. Barra began working at GM in the Pontiac Motor Division when she was 18 as a means to pay for college tuition. Most recently she was the executive vice president of global product devel-opment, purchasing and supply chain for GM. According to GM, Barra was picked for her wealth of knowledge and mana-gerial skills, not for political correctness.

necessary if you will be towing something large and heavy, such as a boat or a recreational vehicle. You may need more horsepower to maintain a safe driving speed when towing especially heavy cargo.

Equipment

Diff erent manufacturers off er towing packages equipped to work in concert with your vehicle. Towing packages may in-clude certain types of hitches, batteries, fl asher systems, ex-tended-view side mirrors, and even special axles and tires. In many areas, a trailer with a loaded weight of more than 1,500 pounds requires a separate braking system and a breakaway switch located on the tongue of the trailer that activates the trailer brakes in the event it separates from the tow vehicle. Having the right equipment can mean the diff erence be-tween safely towing cargo and getting in an accident.

Ability

Having a lot of power and the right equipment is not enough to safely tow cargo. Recklessness on the road, which includes driving over the speed limit, is a recipe for an accident. It typically takes time and some practice for drivers to grow

accustomed to driving while tow-ing cargo. D r i v i n g while tow-ing cargo requires that drivers ma-neuver their vehicles dif-ferently than they would

in more typical conditions, and that they drive at slower speeds while leaving room for a larger turning radius. In ad-dition, drivers must accommodate for the extra weight when braking.

Vehicle check

Verifying that the trailer hitch is secure is not the only inspec-tion drivers must conduct before hitting the open road. The vehicle doing the towing should be serviced, and any repairs should be made. Check fl uid levels, particularly the transmis-sion fl uid. In addition, make sure the water level in the battery is acceptable and have the motor oil changed if it is nearing its mileage limit. It's also a good idea to replace the air fi lter, examine the tires for adequate tread and test the brakes.

When the trip begins, give your vehicle and the hitch a once-over to double-check that everything is in working order. This can be done during service station stops along the trip.

Spring is a season of recreational fun and long road trips, but it pays to play it safe when towing gear and other cargo.

LEARN TO TOW CARGO SAFELY Warm weather is on the horizon, and people from all over are preparing their vehicles for another season of road trips. In addition to packing the interior cargo areas full of equipment and luggage, many road-trippers also haul gear and recre-ational accessories with them.

There's more to towing than hitching a trailer and hitting the open road. A number of factors come into play when towing

cargo or another vehicle, including the towing capacity of the vehicle doing the hauling. The following are some safety tips for road trippers hitting the road with trailer in tow.

Tow vehicles

While many vehicles have towing capabilities, not all of those vehicles are necessarily right for the job. Review the towing capacities of various vehicles depending on the type of trailer that will be towed. A larger, more powerful vehicle may be

The size and weight of a trailer and the cargo it's towing must be considered before embarking on a trip.

THE DANGER OF SMOKING WHILE DRIVING

Using a cell phone, texting and drinking alcoholic beverages are all activities that can lead to fi nes or arrest if done while in a moving vehicle. But in some areas, it is already illegal or may soon be, to smoke in a vehicle if in the presence of chil-dren.

Since 2006, several communities across North America have implemented laws to prevent smoking in cars when chil-dren are present, and campaigns for smoke-free car laws are poised to continue.

The public has become increasingly aware that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, in-cludes the smoke that a smoker exhales and the smoke that comes from burning tobacco products. Thousands of toxic chemicals are present in secondhand smoke, including formaldehyde, lead, butane, cyanide, and carbon monoxide. These dangerous chemicals can be inhaled and tend to linger in the air for hours or longer. Smoke residue also clings to

a smoker's body and hair and can even surface inside of a home or vehicle, according to The Mayo Clinic.

Asthma, heart disease and cancer may result from contact with secondhand smoke. When someone smokes within the small enclosed space of a car, passengers are exposed to air that is many times more toxic than what the EPA considers hazardous air quality, even if a window is down. What's more, the particulates of tobacco smoke that are absorbed in the upholstery off -gas back into the air even after many days have passed, exposing riders to toxins well beyond when someone smoked in the car.

The developing bodies of children and their small stature put youngsters at risk for greater complications from cigarette smoke, although any passenger is at risk.

Laws vary depending on location and typically apply to chil-dren ages 16 and under. Smokers are urged to quit smoking for their health and the health of others. But those who con-tinue to smoke should refrain from smoking when inside a vehicle, especially when children are present.
