PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Hernandez Trail dates back to 1820s

The St. Sebastian River Buffer Preserve State Park of Brevard and Indian River counties looks today much like it did when a trail was blazed in 1825 and 1837. Very few people were living in Florida between New Smyrna and Key West. There were no roads, railroads or any kind of transportation available on the Intracoastal waterways. Col. James Gadsden cleared a road in 1825 as far south as the St. Lucie River. Joseph M. Hernandez was a Brigadier general in the Army. He was given an assignment December 1837 to build a road through the wilderness along the Gadsden route to connect forts in an effort to remove the Seminole Indians. Most of the road was built along the dune line known to geologists as the Ancient Atlantic Coastal Ridge. It was relatively high and had dry terrain. When the trail arrived in Indian River County, it came through the state park and to the west side of Fellsmere

Brookside Cemetery. It went south to what’s now Sebastian River High School and continued southeast and picked up the higher sand ridge near Winter Beach. Research by city engineer J. Morris Smith reveals that the trail cut through the Vero Beach downtown area just a few blocks west of the Main Library. It cut through both the Vero Beach High and Elementary schools, and crossed 12th Street into Waterford

Lakes where there was at one time a short landing strip. This high ridge was most likely the last remnant of the Hernandez Trail. It would have been nice if the Waterford Lakes subdivision could have been called Hernandez Trace! Nothing remains of the trail except on some aerial photos and in some cases, trail markers.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the return of “Last Comic Standing”:

• As I’ve said before, 2016 is shaping up to be the best year for local elections since ’08. That’s why I’m so pleased to see the Indian River County Democratic Women’s Club host a workshop for ALL first-time candidates and those affiliated with their campaign. When I saw the ad for the “Politics 101” workshop in the Press Journal, I figured only registered Democrats need apply. (If that were the case, I wouldn’t be writing about it.) The July 18 workshop, which costs $65 and will be held at the Richardson Center, is open to anyone – yes, even registered Republicans. The cost covers breakfast, lunch and all materials. Sharon Kolor, a member of the Democratic Women’s Club, admits some within the local Democratic ranks don’t like the idea of helping Republican candidates, but this event transcends political affiliation.

Leading the all-day workshop will be Kevin Winchell, who is assistant director of community engagement at Stetson University. Winchell made a name for himself nationally by giving a TED Talk on “Politics 101.” (The speech can be found on YouTube.) Winchell is why this isn’t your ordinary political workshop. It’s an opportunity to gain some real insight about what lies ahead for first-time candidates. You may recall the story “60 Minutes” did on TED Talks. They’re a pretty big deal. Kolor said candidates from Charlotte and Brevard counties have registered for the workshop – they’re coming because of Winchell. “I have worked with a couple of first-time candidates,” Kolor said. “They’re not aware of strategy. People will come away from this with an understanding of the strategy needed

to run a successful campaign.” As longtime readers know, I’m a wannabe political strategist … thus, my interest in this workshop.• Richard Granata, a big fan of trains and All Aboard Florida, grinned as he reported All Aboard Therapy had closed its office at U.S. 1 and 45th Street. The joke, of course, had been that All Aboard Therapy provided mental support for those curled up in a fetal position over the prospects of All Aboard Florida becoming a reality. Instead, it provides speech, occupational and physical therapy for children. (True story: On its website is an image of kids riding a choo-choo train!) Turns out All Aboard Therapy moved to a new location. It’s now at 2050 40th Avenue, Suite 1.• Who needs Netflix when you have the library? Thanks to the free DVDs available at the library, the Lemmons binge-watched the first season of “House of Cards” last weekend.• Attention, women: Raise your hand if you agree with

the statement below by Cindy Carson, owner of Dragonfly Designs (see her ad on page 3). “Never underestimate the power of a flower.”• I’ll tell you, I never really appreciated all those years of working in an air-conditioned office until this summer. I’m now out and about every afternoon doing business-related things, and the heat is so intense. No wonder people stay indoors all day. I like how Susan Harris put it: “This is our winter.”• So my wife and I are finishing our breakfast at Bob Evans, and Craig Mahan walks by and, during our brief conversation, makes a reference to “Carry On My Wayward Son” (the hit song by Kansas in the 1970s). We leave the restaurant, and I start up my car. You guessed it – “Carry On My Wayward Son” is playing on the radio (99.7 FM). What are the odds? I probably should have gone straight to Publix and bought a lottery ticket, but didn’t.

Overlooked cinematic gems

As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:

• The Brothers Solomon (2007, R, directed by Bob Odenkirk). The Solomon brothers (Will Forte and Will Arnett) are on a mission to deliver a grandchild to their dying father. However, having been raised alone by their father in Antarctica, they completely lack the necessary social skills to pull off the feat the old-fashioned way. Thus, they seek out a surrogate mother (Kristen Wiig) to help them pull it off. Blatantly silly, this movie will appeal to fans of goofball humor.• The Station Agent (2003, R, directed by Thomas McCarthy). The diminutive Finbar (Peter Dinklage from “Game of Thrones”) inherits an honest-to-goodness train station in rural New Jersey after the passing of his boss

and mentor (who owned a model train shop). Fin makes the journey to claim his inheritance and it’s his interactions with the locals that make this movie shine. Also stars the lovely and talented Patricia Clarkson. • Frailty (2001, R, directed by Bill Paxton). Fenton Meiks (Matthew McConaughey) has been taught since childhood that their family was put here to kill “God’s demons” – people whom God has singled out for execution and then passed the word on to Fenton’s father. When Fenton goes to the FBI

to report his brother Adam as being responsible for a string of serial killings, a thread is pulled that unravels the whole frightening story. Bill Paxton directs and stars in this dark thriller, which features a twist ending that will make your jaw drop.Mike Bushman is owner/operator of Recycled DVDs, located at 937 Seventh Ave. (behind Chili’s restaurant) in Vero Beach.
