Joe Bonamassa is a true guitar prodigy: he first heard Stevie Ray Vaughan at age four and was instantly taken by his high-powered playing. Passionate with the Blues, he opened for B.B. King at the age of eight, and at 12 he was playing solo regularly around upstate New York.

His twelfth studio album, Driving Toward The Daylight, will be released this year. After the success of his concert in 2010, he is back at the Miles Davis Hall with an acoustic project.

Salom Kiner

    HAIL MONTREUX, FULL OF JAZZ

The opening of Montreux Jazz is, to music lovers, what Christmas is to the devout: at once celebration and worship, ceremony and a com-ing together which, even in the absence of blood ties, still functions as a family reunion. Just as the faithful make their way to high mass, amidst euphoric rustling and impatient chiming, on this day festival-goers, sta and artists are kicking o the annual pilgrimage to the altar of one of the great seigneurs of music in the region of Vaud.

Many indeed are these enthusiastic apostles of the pleasure principle who celebrate the ritual of opening night. They know that beginnings are often feverish, as is anything full of passion. They feel their way along, caught up in the joyful crowd, carefully attuned to anything (or anyone) that might be missing or might have changed. But

the scintillating surface of the lake, the colorful aromas of the food stands, and the popping of corks and clinking of glasses play a tarantella in each and every heart. They rapidly rediscover familiar patterns, and are soon basking in the warmth of the lakefront, drinking a few beers, and dining al fresco at their favorite restaurant. Next they climb the steps of Auditorium Stravin-ski, where the Festival traditionally receives its musical christening. Of course, one last, leisurely drink by the picture windows, gazing upon the site laid out before them, savoring their good fortune and catching up with friends, before sur-rendering themselves to the melodious charms of a monstre sacr (en italic).

To state the obvious: Who could possibly grow tired of this? Even if summers will forever come around again, they would never shine with the same festive sparkle without the emotional setting of a community that comes together each year as Montreux Jazz tunes up. Some have been coming foreverfor others, this is their fi rst communion. It is the artists, the sta , and the festival-goers, who, through their fervor and goodwill, make Montreux Jazz a beacon not just in Switzerland but all over the world.

The Montreux Jazz Festival is a human bal-let that extends well beyond its o cial dates, and from which spring miracles, revelations, legends, and characters. Sometimes, alas, those characters leave us bereft. This edition opens with great promise, both musical and human, while also bringing us beautiful memories of all those who, since the very beginning, have made the Festival possible. Salom Kiner
