    WHAT A FEST !

    FLASH

    MUSIQUE, ON TOURNE!

Salom Kiner

    MUSIC ON THE SET!

A plague is infecting concert halls. In Montreux and elsewhere, it is now impossible to watch and listen to an artist perform without the visual pollution of a mise en abme from grainy phone screens as members of the audience busy themselves filming their favorite song. At Lana Del Rey on Wednesday, at M.I.A. the next day, the front rows of Miles Davis Hall looked like a wall of paparazzi at a photo call. I beg of you, dear audience members, stop spoiling the experience for your fellow concert-goers and stealing the intellectual property of the artists: stow your cameras and, instead, enjoy the work of the Montreux Jazz Festivals audiovisual

production team. For your viewing pleasure, no fewer than four trailers are churning away in the lower levels of the building, editing together, in real time, sound and image from every con-cert. This is heavy artillery: mobile recording studios, from which all the images projected in the concert halls are controlled in the smallest detail, and also where performances by all the artists (except those having refused to be re-corded) are put in the can. This high-wire act requires Luca de Luigi, this evenings director at the Miles Davis Hall, strapped into his cockpit, to juggle feeds from all the different cameras with the dexterity of an orchestra conductor and the lilting verve of a Roberto Benigni. Next door, on board Voyager 2, sound engineer Ren Weis alternately examines his display and his mixing table: We capture the feeds from the microphones at the venue which we record as multiple tracks and which we mix live. Then we synchronize the sound with the video for delivery to the archives and the media. That stage is carried out upstairs, in the post-production studio that, while being heavily charged with testosterone, nevertheless has a team of young men who do their own vacuuming while singing the praises of their boss, Fanny. Remaining calm amidst the youthful ferment of her team, she coordinates the editing of the songs chosen for submission to the media and for rebroadcast in external Montreux Jazz Caf, as well as the archiving of the concerts on DVDs and HD cassettes. One copy is given to the artist, but the rest head towards Claude Nobs chalet, where they will add to the already gargantuan collection that he has amassed and which will soon be recognized by UNESCOs World Heritage list. So for that reason if for no other, put away your smartphone and actually watch the concert!
