AVIS Musina again best in service

In memoriam

21 Augustus 2015

Altesaam 62 sakke vol rommel is in ‘n uur-en-half se tyd opgetel.

Households in the Nzhelele-area will be among the first to receive free set-top boxes (STBs) in Limpopo as South Africa is preparing to switch from our analogue to a digital television signal.

Communications minister Faith Muthambi made her decision public during a digital migration imbizo that she held at Rabali village over the past weekend. Her speech also formed part of an awareness program.

“We are trying to raise awareness in the commu-nity, so that they can understand and be ready as we roll out this project,” said Muthambi.

Muthambi added that her department had prior-itized South Africa’s border-lying areas to make the digital switch first. “…we’ve indicated as government that we are going to prioritize these areas in order to protect the country from radio signal interference,” said Muthambi. “We are embarking on this consumer awareness campaign, so that our locals can get ready before we roll out the project. We have prioritised Nzhelele to be first border-lying area in this province to benefit from the free STBs that we will be distributing to TV-owning poor households.”

According to Muthambi, the inner part of the country will be included at a later stage of the roll-out programme.

The need for the switch to digital TV derives from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) resolution where countries in region 1, con-sisting of Europe, Russia, Africa and the Middle East, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, should change their broadcasting services from analogue to digital by 17 June 2015.

Minister of Communications Ms Faith Mu-thambi.

The consequences of failing to meet the 2015 deadline to switch off the analogue terrestrial TV signals is that South Africa will no longer be pro-tected against disruptions of the radio waves that are used for analogue television broadcasts.

During a feedback meeting in parliament on Tuesday, 11 August, Muthambi assured the gov-ernment that digital terrestrial television will be implemented during the next 18 to 24 months.

Tourism

Limpopo to host tourism celebrationsThis year, World Tourism Day will be celebrated in Limpopo.

The theme for this internation-al day, which will fall on 27 Sep-tember, will be A billion tourists, a billion opportunities. Tourism Minister Derick Hanekom made the announcement on Tuesday during the launch of Tourism Month in Limpopo. He said it was important for all South Afri-cans, not only those of Limpopo, to become ambassadors of their own country.

Tourism Month is an annual celebration held in September to focus on the importance of tourism to the economy.

The UNWTO theme for this

year is “A Billion Tourists, A Billion Opportunities”.

However, South African Tour-ism has modified the global theme to make it more applicable to the domestic campaign in South Africa and made it, “A million New Experiences are a Sho’tleft Away”.

In addition, the theme will pro-vide a platform to examine how communities around the world work to grow tourism through unearthing new opportunities.

World Tourism day will also afford Hanekom’s department the opportunity to develop both international and domestic tour-ism travel, not only in Limpopo

but the whole country. He said that R100 million had been in-vested towards growing this goal.

“With this investment, we are committed to ensuring that the wonders we boast of, and the unique heritage we have been endowed with, are shared by more and more South Africans,” he said.

In Limpopo, Hanekom singled out Mapungubwe World Heri-tage Site and the Kruger National Park as key tourism attractions, expressing the hope that his department’s programme will influence an influx of visitors to the province during the remain-der of the year.

Hulle het verwys na ‘n Keniaanse spreuk wat lui: “Treat the earth well, it was not given to you by your parents, but loaned to you by your children”.

As a tribute to her late father, Dr Daan Marais’, daughter Lynne Ras (née Marais) will be releas-ing a book detailing her father’s adventurous Trans-African Waterway Expedition, the first ever to be undertaken, this coming Friday.

The book, entitled In search of an Equatorial Water Highway, follows the journey of a 12-mem-ber expedition party, led by Dr Marais, attempting to cross the African continent by water. Set in 1958, the story outlines the arduous trip and portrays the team’s determination to succeed. It highlights their misfortune and anguish, describing how they improvised to overcome adversities. “The content alludes to the essence of human nature, recounting camaraderie, occasional conflicts and humorous squabbles. This factual account of the first trans-af-rican waterway expedition reflects the courage and perseverance of a small group of men and women intent on achieving the almost impossible,” says author Lynne.

The Trans-African Waterway Expedition set out on 1 June 1958 from the port of Chinde, in the Zambezi estuary on the Indian Ocean, to pioneer and charter a 3,600 mile (5,794 km) inland journey via navigable bodies of water. They reached the Atlantic Ocean at Banana Point in the mouth of the Congo River on 23 August 1958.

Led by Dr Marais, the primary purpose of this expedition was to survey the route to determine the potential development of an equatorial water highway, providing arterial links for commerce and industry between the two oceans. The secondary objective was to study and collect scientific speci-mens, particularly within the fields of parasitology, ornithology and anthropology.

Representing diverse scientific disciplines, the 12-person team carried the approval of various organisations, including the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the South African Institute for Medical Research (SAIMR) and an

A daughter’s tribute to an adventurous father

international body of scientists. Expedition members were request-ed to collect data and document significant findings en route, in exchange for assistance and technical support from the scientific es-tablishments. They were also expected to provide biological and ethnical recordings and studies, as well as rare biological specimens, to museums and international re-search institutions.

Using three specifi-cally designed 15-foot (4.6 m) fibreglass boats, they crossed the equator twice via three lakes and seven major rivers. An overland party with two support vehicles transported equipment, provisions and fuel and provided portage over impassable areas.

The team returned with valuable scientific data and specimens, along with important acquisitions of primitive art forms obtained from all territories visited. The expedition took 84 days to complete and in total the waterborne

party travelled 3,600 miles (5,794 km) between the port of Chinde on the Indian Ocean and Banana Point on the Atlantic Ocean. The boats were hauled overland for a distance of approximately 200 miles (322 km). They established that, by constructing 240 miles (386 km) of locks and canals between Lake Nyasa and Lake Tanganyika, a transconti-nental passage for vessels of modest burden might be possible in the future. The group took close to 1,300 photographs and shot more than 30,000 feet (9,144 m) of film. The South African Academy for Science and Art awarded the prestigious Eugène Nielen Marais Commemorative Medal to Daan in 1995, in honour of the expedition.

The late Dr Marais, a well-known resident of the Soutpansberg, passed away on 21 August 2012 in the Limpopo Mediclinic in Polokwane. Aged 83, Marais died from heart failure, five days after undergoing hip surgery. The launch of the book on Friday, 21 August, will not only coincide with the commemoration of his death in 2012, but also with the completion of the expedition on 23 August 1958. “I often put myself in their shoes and imagine how difficult it must have been without modern-day technology – no ATMs, Internet, GPS or cellular and satellite phones. Today’s vehi-cles are more advanced and travel conditions have improved dramati-cally,” says Lynne.

The book will be available at Leach Print-ers in Louis Trichardt from Friday, 21 August. Alternatively, phone au-thor Lynne at Tel 083 302 1408, or send her an email at [email protected]

Birthday Celebrations

Newspapers celebrate their birthday in style “A good newspaper is a commu-nity’s best friend. Not its sweetest friend, always, though it certainly can be kind and loving in its own special way. And yes, it can be a prickly friend at times, and a bit stubborn as well. And it can be a blunt friend, and unreservedly so. A community’s newspaper is that one friend you can count on to tell hard truths, to break sad news, to tell it the way it is.

“And your community newspaper may disappoint you from time to time, as all friends will. But like a best friend, a good newspaper is THERE.”

These were the introductory words of Prof. Bill Reader from the Ohio University on Friday night. He was one of the two guest speakers at a function to celebrate the Zout-pansberger’s 30th birthday and the 25th birthday of the Limpopo Mirror. He was accompa-nied by another ex-pert in community journalism, Prof. John Hatcher from the University of Minnesota’s Du-luth campus.

“Tonight we celebrate three de-cades of friendship for the commu-nities of this region by the Zoutpans-berger and the Limpopo Mirror. They have covered the birth and growth of an entire generation, a generation born into turmoil and tension that is now joining their parents in the hard work of building peace, and they are teaching their own children to strive toward justice and happiness. These two newspapers have helped to build their communities, and it seems they will also help their communities to keep moving forward,” said Reader.

The function was attended by more than 200 guests, which included advertisers, suppliers, current and previous staff members and other dig-nitaries. It was combined with several

exhibitions that depicted the history of the newspapers since they were started in 1985 and 1990 respectively.

“It is not often that a privately owned community newspaper gets to survive a quarter of a century or lon-ger. Long before that, it either closes down or, if successful, gets taken over by one of the conglomerates,” explained Anton van Zyl, manager of the Zoutnet group. He attributed the success of the newspapers to an extremely supportive community who took ownership of the newspapers. “A newspaper belongs to the community it functions in and we merely manage it on behalf of the community,” he said.

Van Zyl paid homage to the found-ers of the newspapers, Johann and Melinda du Plessis, who travelled all the way from the Western Cape to at-

tend the function. He descr ibed their venture as visionary, espe-cially the estab-lishment of the Limpopo Mirror at a time when few others were

willing to produce a newspaper with a predominantly black readership.

Van Zyl ascribed the success of the papers to a dedicated and talented team. “It is an achievement to pro-duce a really good newspaper with well-written articles, a good lay-out and a variety of adverts, but many people can do that. Where it becomes extremely difficult is when you need to do it week after week, year after year. This is where the Zoutpansberg-er and Limpopo Mirror stand out. For more than a quarter of a century, we have been able to produce quality products week after week, and very few others can say that. For this I thank an excellent team, not only the ones working at the newspapers now, but also the ones in whose footsteps they followed.”

“And your community newspaper may disappoint you from time to time, as all friends will. But like a

best friend, a good newspaper is THERE.”

Following the Friday evening birthday cele-bration, Prof Reader (middle) and Prof Hatcher (left) hosted a workshop for local editors at the Mountain Inn Hotel on Saturday. The function at the Fransie Vermaak Hall in Louis Trichardt was attended by more than 200 guests, which included advertisers, suppliers, current and previous staff members and other dignitaries.

vlees noem (vers 7). Christus se antwoord was: My genade is vir jou genoeg.

So het Paulus die werk van die Here gedoen, wetende die Here was by hom.

Paulus stel dit so in 2 Kor.12:10: Want as ek swak is, is ek sterk.

“Vertel bietjie weer vir my, Daise.

“Daisy, partymaal wil ek jou skud.

Soos in My Fair Lady?”

Hierdie is ernstig.

“Sê my, Daisy – hoe soort mens is Bernard se ma?

“Are you going to the white show or the black show” by

Emily Bristow refers: I write my letter on behalf and in

defence of the entire Louis Trichardt community, Indian, Black, Coloured and White, following the inaccurate attack on my community.

It is such a pity we reside with brainwashed, kneejerk Cultural Marxists punting multicultural rhetoric void of facts and without substance. So, I will take the time to point out a few glaring fl aws in the content of Miss Bristow’s letter.

Firstly, the “hi-jacked” Louis Trichardt Show; which was once an agricultural show; has degenerated into a cesspool of anarchy. I refer to the mob attack on one individual with reference to Tshifhiwa Mukw-evho’s article dated 08 August 2014 under the headline Man feigns death and survives mob attack. I quote; “The mob continued to beat him and pour beer on his body”.

In another article dated 8 August 2014 written by Isabel Venter under the headline ‘Outrage over show” it was reported that during the three days of the show, the police had charged 111 people with drinking in public, 20 for public drunkenness, three for urinating in public, three for road traffi c contraventions and two for prostitution.

A complaint of rape had been lodged with the police and on more than one occasion the police had to use pepper spray to control crowds.

Secondly, the Inni Berg Fees is not a “white show” as you put it, but a festival aimed at fundraising for the CVO School. Had you been less reactionary and taken the time to attend it, you would have been delighted to see both Black and Indian faces there too. They were

welcomed and treated like any other participant. As far as I know, there has never once been an incident of violence at the Inni Berg Festival.

Thirdly, this week the Soutpans-berg Primary school had an entire fun-park erected on their sport fi elds ... this hardly a week after the Makhado Show. Many white kids have been attending the festivities there alongside their black friends.

Fourthly; Multiculturalism is another “ism” that has failed to stand the test of time. Our South Af-rican constitution, one of the most progressive and comprehensive constitutions in the world, affords us the freedom of association. That means that we have the right to associate with whom we want. It is also a sociological and cultural reality. People don’t hate others… they just prefer to be surrounded by their own. Be it family, community or yes… race too. It is not a crime, just a natural phenomenon.

Lastly, many European leaders have come out and stated that mul-ticulturalism has failed dismally in the EU where the original kneejerk Marxists forced it on people. To be exact, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and I quote; “Multicultural society has utterly failed. The idea of people from different cultural backgrounds living happily ‘side by side’ did not work”.

I would like to add… In the light of the above facts, I don’t think our multicultural community is doing too badly. We, after all, have been living side by side quite amicably… regardless of the inarticulate knee jerkers.

Peace to all the good Louis Trich-ardt citizens of all colours.

The final of the Louis Trichardt Cricket Club’s Limpopo Dairy 20/20 league will be decided between Jolly and Limpopo, following their wins in the semifinal round of the series the past weekend.

Jolly came up against the Wer-da Toyota Vikings, with Jolly batting first. Nasir Raja and Amir

Saif laid a solid foundation for their team, scoring 35 runs from 42 balls and a quick 48 runs off only 23 balls respectively. They ended on a score of 173 for the loss of three wickets.

With ball in hand, Leon Furstenburg took two wickets for the loss of 43 runs in his four overs for the Vikings, while team

mate Morné Olwage took one wicket for the loss of 16 runs in his four overs.

It was hard going for the Vi-kings, with the whole team out with only 70 runs on the score-board. Leon Furstenburg (27 run off 26 balls, not out) and Marius Meintjies (6 off 15) tried their best to give the Vikings

a fighting change, but it was not enough and Jolly claimed a 103-run win. This was due to good bowling by the Jolly bowlers, with Sa-hil Patel taking three wickets for the loss of only 13 runs in three overs, and Sohil also claiming three wickets for the loss of 18 runs in his four overs.

In the other game (full scorecard not available) that was decided be-tween Limpopo Dairy and GM, Limpopo se-cured a six-wicket win over their opponents. GM managed to put 137 runs for the loss of five wickets on the score-board in their allotted overs, with Limpopo scoring 140 runs for the loss of four wickets in their innings.

The final of the Lim-popo Dairy 20/20 league between Limpopo and Jolly will be decided this Sunday, 23 August, at the town’s A field. The game will start at 13:45.

Limpopo and Jolly in final 20/20 clash

Mékayle Geyer is ‘n Triegie-held.
