a bloodied and badly injured suspected poacher is taken away to hospital in an ambulance.

Jungle justice lands suspect in hospitala suspect thought he had out-smarted the police, but he ran straight into the people’s fury...

Enraged community members at Plange in the Malamulele area, who are tired of crime, unleashed their anger on the man whom they suspected to be a robber in the area. The incident happened on Sunday evening.

It is alleged the man found himself at the mercy of angry community members after running away from a police trap. It is alleged that he and another man were allegedly arranging to buy rhino horns from a ranger.

The community, which has experienced many acts of crime of late and recently held meetings to discuss crime, saw red when the man was found in a house in the village. The man was severely

attacked and left for dead. The man, aged 35, is believed

to be from Khubvi and is now in the Malamulele Hospital and under police guard. His friend, aged 39, is in police custody.

Police spokesperson Col Ronél Otto said two suspected rhino poachers in their thirties were arrested after they allegedly attempted to persuade a ranger in the Kruger National Park to kill and dehorn a rhino for them. They allegedly said it would be “easier” for a ranger to do so.

The ranger allegedly agreed, but told them that they would need to bring him a firearm as he could not shoot the animal with his official firearm. He then contacted the police and a meeting was arranged between the ranger and the suspects. The meeting took place at Plange

village near Malamulele on Sunday evening. “The 39yearold man was arrested during this controlled meeting and police confiscated a 30.06 hunting rifle as well as a vehicle. A second suspect, who realised what was happening, ran away and fled into the home of a woman in the village,” said Otto.

The woman alerted members of the community, who then assaulted the suspect severely. He is currently in hospital in a serious but stable condition. The other suspect is due to appear in court soon. He will face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, as well as conspiracy to commit a crime.

The second suspect will appear once he is sufficiently recovered. Otto said investigations were continuing.

Els sal Kersfees saam met familie wees

residents of the Makhado (Louis trichardt) area are warned that the region’s water supply will be interrupted on Friday, 7 December, for the whole day.

The Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) said that Makhado town and Tshikota might experience no water supply from 06:00 to 18:00 as leaks on the Albasini pipeline between the Albasinidam and the Mowcop reservoir needed to be repaired. The leaks were noticed amidst the VDM’s clearing of vegetation on the pipeline. The process is progressing well and about eight kilometres have been cleared so far.

Local AfriForum chairperson Mr Wally Schultz asked residents to be patient during the long process to restore a consistent water supply to town.

“The Albasini pipeline had not been cleared for years. Now AfriForum and Vhembe got the job going! Dense bush made it impossible to detect leaks that have seen more than 50% of our precious water wasted. Now the line can and will be walked every day. This and other AfriForum initiatives will help restore water to town, but to get there, repairs

By Linda van der Westhuizen

Water taps will again run dry this Fridayneed to be done,” stated Schultz on Tuesday. AfriForum is currently working hand in hand with VDM to ensure that the court order dates are honoured.

AfriForum obtained a court order from the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to enforce, among others, the denuding of the pipeline.

pictured is one of the water leaks clearly seen after the de-bushing of the albasini pipeline had started. Vhembe District Municipality said that water leaks uncovered so far would be be repaired on Friday, 7 December, with the result that parts or all of Makhado (Louis trichardt) and tshikota will have no or interrupted water supply from 06:00 till 18:00. Local afriForum chairperson, Mr Wally schultz urged residents to be patient, since “this (the denuding) and other afriForum initiatives will help restore water to town, but to get there, repairs need to be done.”

Mowkop reservoir nears completionthe construction of the sec-ond reservoir at Mowkop in Makhado (Louis trichardt) is progressing well, with some sections already at roof height.

What a great day it will be when the new 10 megalitre reservoir is filled with water, especially for residents who have been suffering for nearly five years with daily interruptions in their water supply for the major part of the day. The day scheduled for the completion of the filling of the reservoir with water is 15 February next year.

Vhembe District Municipality’s (VDM) technical manager, Mr Frederick Tshivhengwa, informed the Zoutpansberger on 26 November that the new Mowcop reservoir was nearing roof height. A site visit fol

lowed on 29 November. The contractor, Shatsane

Systems Solutions of Soweto, said that everything was on track. “We shall soon be done with the wall and the roof will start early next year,” said Mr Victor Tsotetsi, Shatsane’s site agent. The contractor’s timeframes indicate that the “first lift” of the reservoir wall started on 16 July and was completed on 18 September this year. In the first lift, three sections of the reservoir wall were built. The “second lift” proceeded, which included the last three sections of the wall. At the time of the site visit ,the contractor was working on the last section of the wall. Each section required internal formwork to the wall plus columns and steel fixing. Then the consulting engineer would inspect and the external

form work and the casting of the concrete wall would follow, with the last step the stripping and finishing off of the concrete. The cost of the project is estimated at R9.5 million.

The new reservoir is the second reservoir at Mowkop and will augment the water supply to town, and in particular to the new extension.

“The consulting engineers, Rendeals Four, were here and they were satisfied,” Tsotetsi said. The engineer on the project, Mr R Madimutsa, was not available for comment.

The hope is that a proper job will be done this time round as the previous contractor, NW Civils, failed to build the reservoir according to specifications and the whole process came to a halt. The reservoir should have been completed in June 2008.

Volgens provinsiale DAleier mnr.

Volgens mnr.

south african independent power producer biotherm energy (pty) Ltd has an-nounced its plans for a com-mercial solar-energy plant for the soutpansberg region.

The Alldays plant, located about 70km west of Musina on Gotha Farm, will be able to generate up to 75Mw of electricity, enabling it to supply approximately 15 000 homes with renewable sun energy.

The proposed plant is currently in its scoping phase, with the draft environmental impact assessment (EIA) report having to be completed. Members of the public will be able to comment on this report until 15 January 2013.

According to the EIA, the Alldays plant envisions the

use of either photovoltaic (PV) or concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) panels to convert sunlight directly into electricity. BioTherm says the climate of the area favours photovoltaic technology.

This electricity generated will be diverted into the national Eskom grid.

The stored electricity at the plant will be diverted via a proposed onsite substation that will connect to the Soutpan/Venetia power line via a loopinloopout system. The other alternative, according to the EIA report, would be to construct a 132Kv connection line of up to 2km parallel to link with the substation.

BioTherm proposed the solar plant to tie in with Eskom

and the national government’s 10year strategy to produce renewable energy by means of biomass, wind, solar and smallscale hydro. “Eskom, as an energy utility, has been identified as the world’s secondlargest producer of carbon emissions,” the report states.

But even though it would at first glance seem that the solar plant holds many benefits, concerns have been raised about the proposed property where the plant will be constructed.

The plant will have a planned foot print of about 175Ha, which means that some vegetation clearing will take place to enable the construction of the PV or CPV panels that can stretch to heights of up to 22 meters.

Dié memorandum is dieselfde dag by honderde polisiestasies ingehandig.

senior regional magistrate ronnie rambau will get to spend another Christmas at home, pen-ding the outcome of his corruption trial.

The final score in his corruption trail remains to be settled. Rambau, accused of accepting a bribe to influence the outcome of a court case, once again appeared with his coaccused, attorney T E Lubisi and state prosecutor Estene Willemse, in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Lubisi was expected to start testifying for the defence, but the case was put on hold when Rambau’s advocate, Mr Johan Hatting, withdrew from the record. According to information available, Hatting withdrew because he had not received payment from Rambau.

In addition, Lubisi’s attorney also told the court that he had not had time to familiarize himself with the case. He is the third attorney that Lubisi has appointed since the beginning of the trial in 2010.

In the meantime, the Magistrate’s Commission is very cautious to answer any questions put to them regarding Rambau’s suspension.

The Zoutpansberger was, however, able to confirm that Rambau is still provisionally suspended and still receiving his full magistrate’s salary.

The three men’s case was postponed again, this time until 9 April next year.

die patrollies verskerp of verminder. Gereelde vergaderings word gehou waar misdaad aangespreek word.

Hy was 41 jaar oud.

Foto verskaf.

Innovation

What started off as a “sideline” project at the Zoutpansberger a few years ago, has now re-ceived international recognition.

The AdBooker system that was locally developed is one of the winners of the African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC).

The names of the 20 winners in the competition were announced last week during the African Editors’ Forum’s annual general meeting held in Rwanda. The competition boasts a total of $1 million in funding and technical support to the digital journalism projects. ANIC is the largest fund for digital journalism experimentation in Africa and is designed to encourage the finding of solutions to the business, distribution and workplace challenges that face the media industry.

A jury of 15 international me dia strategists, technology innovators, and funding experts evaluated more than 500 project plans before selecting winners from a shortlist of 40 projects.

“Africa’s media face serious challenges, and each of our winners tries to solve a realworld problem that journalists are grappling with. This includes the public’s growing concern about the manipulation and accuracy of online content, plus concerns around the security of communications and of whistleblowers or journalistic sources,” says Justin Arenstein, who manages ANIC as part of a wider digital innovation program with Africa’s largest association of media owners and operators, the African Media Initiative (AMI).

Winning projects will receive cash grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, plus additional technological support from a team of four fulltime developers at AMI’s jAccelerator lab in Kenya, and business development support from some of the world’s top media strategists affiliated with the World Association of Newspapers & News Publishers (WANIFRA).

“ANIC believes that all projects have the potential to either be replicated by media elsewhere in Africa, or to be scaled up across the continent, to create wide and sustained impact,” says Justin.

Peter Barron, Google’s Director of External Relations for Europe, the Middle East and Africa said: “We want to see journalism flourish in the digital age in Africa and the African News Innovation Challenge has helped spur some really exciting projects from across the continent. We’re looking forward to seeing these projects unfold and to working further with African journalists who are using technologies to gather and tell important stories.”

ANIC’s founding partners include Google, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the U.S. State Department, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and the World Association of Newspapers and News

Publishers (WANIFRA).The local project, AdBooker, started off in 2004

when Zoutnet, publishers of the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror, realised the need for a centralised booking system for adverts appearing in the newspapers. Their web developer, William Stam, was tasked to develop such a system. Much against the trends of that time, he developed a webbased application. This had the advantage of being accessible via the Internet on almost any platform.

Since 2004, the AdBooker system has been implemented in a number of newsrooms countrywide and proved to be a trusted tool for newspaper managers. In 2012, the system was completely redeveloped and the latest software programming technology was used to make it even more robust, with added features. The revamped AdBooker was entered as a project in the African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC).

The next step would be to make it available to more publishers, especially the smaller independent newspapers throughout southern Africa.

“This is also why we are so delighted with the ANIC award,” says Anton van Zyl, manager of Zoutnet. “Our biggest challenge is to set up a research and design team that can do further technology development for small publishers. We need to secure the future sustainability of such a team, because independent publishers cannot be left behind insofar as development is concerned.”

Local innovation gets worldwide recognition

this festive season, residents in Makhado (Louis trichardt) will once again be treated to the delightful sounds of the salva-tion army brass band.

The Salvation Army brass band was already spotted playing their signature Christmas carols around town the past weekend. As part of their project, they will also do doortodoor collections and residents are invited to participate and donate to their cause.

Not only will the carols of these volunteer musicians bring cheer to those living in houses,

but also to the aged, children in family centres and to homeless people living on the streets.

This is achieved through the public’s donations. The band, however, does not only receive cash donations and people are more than welcome to donate nonperishable food, blankets and old clothes also. People can also donate by SMS via the Salvation Army’s donation hotline.

The following words can be SMSed to 42290: Blanket (for a contribution to purchase blankets), Food (for a contribution to a soup kitchen or similar outreach),

Children (for a contribution to children’s ministries), Elderly (for a contribution to ministry for the elderly), Rehabilitation (for a contribution to a rehabilitation centre) and Trafficking (for a contribution to the fight against human trafficking). Each SMS costs R30.

The pu blic is, however, warned to be on the lookout for fraudsters posing as band members. Collectors and bands must have a letter from the Salvation Army, be dressed in uniform and carry collection tins with the Salvation Army branding on it.

• SPEND AND SAVE The Rotary Anns of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) launched an exciting new fundraising drive, entitled the Spend to Save Project, on Tuesday.

Members of the public buy a onceoff R50 ticket, qualifying them to save between 5% en 10% on every R350 or more they spend at the 15 participating stores. Every ticket thus represents a saving of about R500,” said Rotary Ann president Lizet Joubert. The 15 participating local stores are Sine Wave, Noordewapens, Mike’s Kitchen, Pool and Spa, Spar, Ocean Basket, Easy Albums, Tsonga Textiles, Gateway Inn, Ultimate Guest House, Lalapanzi Hotel, Kiwi Café, C Jay’s Salon, Rainbow Midas and House of Interiors. “The offer expires on 15 December, so make sure you get hold of a couple of tickets and start spending to save!” said Lizet. The Anns thanked all the participating stores for their donations and goodwill towards supporting this worthy cause, as well as Leach Printer for printing the tickets free of charge. For more information, phone Lizet at Tel 083 442 0428.

The Zoutpansberger’s website (www.zout-pansberger.co.za) offers rea ders a calendar entry service on their Events Page.

Visitors to the website can now list their calendar entries for upcoming events on the Events Page themselves. It is as easy as merely logging in on the Events Page through your existing Google, Facebook or Twitter accounts and uploading your entry. The entry will, however, not appear immediately as it has to go through a moderation process fi rst.

In addition, sport club administrators (and

for that matter church and school administra-tors) can contact us to directly submit events on the Events Page without a moderations process. If an administrator is listed as a user on the site, their calendar entries will show im-mediately. This function allows administrators to update events through the year on a platform used by ten others publications throughout the province as part of both a local and provincial calendar.

Notice

Blood needed to avert national crisisthe south african national blood service (sanbs) is cur-rently experiencing a severe shortage of blood as is tradi-tionally the case at this time of the year.

“Currently, we have only 1.5 days of blood available and as we go further into the holiday period, we know that we will not be able to meet the demand for blood by patients. So we are appealing to all our donors who have missed their donation in recent months to please make some time to donate blood, as the blood stocks are

near crisis levels,” says Vanessa Raju, communications manager of the SANBS.

The SANBS’s aim is to maintain a stock level of fi ve days, with 3000 units collected per day to meet the demand.

At present, they are experiencing diffi culty achieving this, which has been mainly due to the fact that their mobile drives, at schools and universities, as well as organisations, are almost impossible at this time of year.

“This puts severe pressure on the SANBS and in times like

these we request all hospitals and medical personnel to hold back on planned surgeries, something we are trying to prevent at all costs. We would need to up our daily target of blood collected to anything around 4 000 to 5000 units per day countrywide until we reach the fi veday stock level,” says Raju.

Persons interested in becoming a donor can SMS their NAME and POSTAL CODE to 31454 to fi nd out where their nearest donor centre is.

Ons het vroeër ‘n kontak by ‘n ander

Zoutnet scoops up top awardsLiN Media Awards

Lin Media’s efforts to uplift the profile of in de pendently owned newspapers in the Lim-popo province culminated in the hosting of the group’s inaugural Lin Media awards in tzaneen the past weekend.

LiN Media was established not only to promote the interests of these newspapers, but also to uplift the standard of local journalism, amidst having to compete with conglomerates such as Caxton and Media 24. The Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mir-ror (Zoutnet) form part of this group of LiN publications, currently comprising nine publications. The other seven members are Bulletin (Tzaneen), Kruger2Canyon (Hoedspruit), Northern News (Mokopane and Lephalale), The Post (BelaBela) and The Beat (BelaBela), Die Kwêvoël (Thabazimbi) and Bushbuckridge News (Bushbuckridge). The judging process was conducted by acclaimed professionals in die newspaper industry, including Dr Pedro Diederichs (retired), Fanie Groenewald (retired), Lizette Odendaal, Sholaine GovenderBateman and Hilke Steenkamp (all from the Department of Journalism at the Tshwane University of Technology), as well as Gien Elsas (currently running the Caxton Cadet School). They had this to say, among other things, about the judging process: “We think you can be proud of the quality newspapers which all of you, from the most senior to the most junior reporters, subeditors, layout artists, advertising and administrative staff, contribute to on a weekly basis. Your readers (and advertisers) are getting value for their money!”

The competition focussed on both advertising (production) and journalism, with the Zoutpans-berger and Limpopo Mirror scooping up awards in both sections.

In the advertising section, Zoutnet’s Dallien Viljoen walked away with a third place in the category for Small Advertisements. Top honours in this category went to the team from The Post, while David Morrison from Bulletin was second. Dallien also took a second place in the category for Large Advertisements. Here, the winner was David Mor

rison, with third place going to Dolla Költzan (Northern News).

Both theZoutpans-berger and Limpopo Mirror did exceptionally well in the categories for Best Front Pages and Newspaper of the Year, with the Zout-pansberger winning the Best Front Pages section and Limpopo Mirror in second place. The Post took overall third position in this section.

In the Newspaper of the Year section, the Zoutpansberger was placed second overall behind The Post as winner. Here, the Limpopo Mirror was once again in the running, securing a third place. The Limpopo Mirror’s website was also voted the secondbest website entered, with Die Kwêvoël walking away with first place. The Post was third in this category. In the writing section, the Zoutpansberger secured

two topthree finishes in the fiercely contested Hard News/Local Government Category, with Isabel Venter taking third place, Andries van Zyl coming second and Ingrid Pepler (The Post) first. Andries also came third in the Human Interest category. In this category, second place went to Valerie Celliers (Northern News) and first place once again to Ingrid.

(Josua 24:15).

In 2009 was die wêreld se vinnigste rekenaar IBM se Roadrunner.

Ek is al vir twee weke so winderig ek voel soos ‘n ryer.

This is not funny

In Japan they invented a machine that catches thieves - They took it to different countries for a test.

In the USA, in 30 minutes, it caught 20 thieves;

In the UK, in 30 minutes, it caught 500 thieves;

In Spain, in 20 minutes, it caught 25 thieves;

In Ghana, in 10 minutes, it caught 6 000 thieves;

In Uganda, in 7 minutes it caught 20,000 thieves;

In Nigeria, in 8 minutes, it caught 30,000 thieves;

In South Africa, in 5 minutes the machine was stolen.

Die inskrywingsfooi was ‘n speelding.
