Ds.

‘n geregistreerde vuurwapenhandelaar was nie, omdat sy registrasieproses net halfpad voltooi was.

By Isabel Venter

BUSINESS talk is a column focus sing on new developments in the local business arena.

To enable us to keep the column running on a weekly basis, readers and businesses are invited to contact the newspaper and let us know of new developments regarding new businesses or services less than a year old.

Any new development will be highlighted through a once-off short write-up in the col-umn free of charge. Further advertisement in the Zoutpansberger can be done at normal advertising rates.

For more information, phone Andries van Zyl at the offi ce of the Zoutpansberger at Tel 015 516 4996/7.

Let us know about your new business or service in townThere has been a bustle of

activity in Louis Trichardt. The old Café Rosa at the

Agapé Church has been un-dergoing a lot of changes, the biggest of which is that it has come under new ownership.

Stasha van Niekerk has taken Café Rosa and turned it into a modern, open space. As of Monday, 1 June, the new restaurant will open its doors to the public and will offi cially be known as UPcafé.

“People who know Café Rosa will not recognise it on opening day,” said Stasha.

UPcafé will take café dining to new heights, with its clean and chic interior design, fi n-ished off in black and white

trimmings. Laptop stations and free WiFi will be on offer for clients who want to fi nish some work over lunch and enjoy a trendy meal.

The new interior of UPcafé is complemented by its new state-of-the-art coffee machine that produces that warm, wel-coming coffee smell.

Furthermore, the café offers an almost open-plan kitchen that will speed up service de-livery. Clients will order their food straight away, without having to work through a waiter and then having to wait for their food to be brought to them. Stasha has added some interesting new dishes to the menu, but some old favourites

will remain. Clients are also still welcome to order birth-day cakes, family platters and meals that were available in the past from Café Rosa.

UP’s venue is also for hire for special functions, after business hours.

Stasha drew inspiration for the new name from community UPliftment projects. There-fore, each month, they will also donate 10% to a reputable charity organisation that will use the funds in community projects. UPcafé will be open from Monday to Fridays from 08:00 until 15:00 and on Sat-urdays from 08:00 until 12:00. For more information, phone Stasha at 084 865 8886.

X-Fuels opens at AFB MakhadoBy Isabel Venter

After more than four years the fuel station situated at Air Force Base Makhado is back in business.

The new station, known as X-Fuels, opened its fuel pumps for business on Monday, 25 May. Manager Giel van Eeden says X-Fuels offer a range of premium fuels, including un-leaded 93 and 95 and 50ppm diesel.

Whether clients drive an old or new vehicle, they will not only benefi t from X-fuels, their pockets will also be heavier. According to Giel, X-fuels cur-rently offers the lowest rate of R12.30 per litre on diesel.

The adjacent shop at X-Fuels has also re-opened and falls

under the management of André Roets.

X-Fuels will be open on weekdays from 08:00 until

17:00 and from 08:00 until 13:00 on Saturdays.

For more information, Giel can be contacted at 082 888 1770.

Daar was in 2006 verskeie inbraakpogings by haar huis.

Top Awards

29 Mei 2015

The Zoutpansberger found its way to the podium three times on Friday, 22 May, as a category winner during the annual MDDA/Sanlam Awards for Local Media 2014 held at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg. To top it off, the newspaper’s news editor, Andries van Zyl, won the coveted Journalist of the Year prize.

This awards ceremony, now in its 24th year, is the biggest of its kind for journalists working at community and local media newspapers in South Africa. Throughout the industry, it is known as the “Oscars” of the community and local media fraternity. For the past five years, the event has been co-sponsored by the Media Diversity and Development Agency (MDDA).

Friday’s event was attended by some 300 journalists and industry leaders from across the country, with the Minister of Communications, Ms Faith Muthambi, delivering the keynote address. This year’s competition again attracted a record number of more than 800 entries from 200 publi-cations nationwide and the 11 judges in the print category really had their work cut out for them.

Van Zyl scooped up three first-place wins during the evening. He was announced overall winner of the hard news and human interest categories in the print section, as well as a top-three finalist in the investigative journalism category. His colleague, Isabel Venter, also saw her name come up as a top-three finalist in the human-interest writing category and she was a runner-up in the news photography category. The Zoutpansberger itself was also a top-three finalist in the best newspaper category for small independent commercial newspapers (estab-lished more than five years). A former reporter at the Zoutpansberger’s sister publication, the Lim-popo Mirror, Mr Phathutshedzo Luvhengo, was a top-10 finalist in the hard news writing category.

“I could not believe it when I saw my name come up as a top-three finalist in the top award for the

evening, that of Journalist of the Year. Moments later, my name flashed as winner and it took me a while to comprehend what had happened,” re-marked Van Zyl.

Ironically, said Van Zyl, the award was hand-ed to him by Communications Minister Faith Muthambi. She is a former municipal manager of the Makhado Municipality, and Van Zyl and Muthambi did not always see eye to eye because of his reporting on her controversial term in office. “At least we were able to joke about the irony of it all afterwards and had a couple of laughs,” said Van Zyl.

It was only afterwards that the magnitude of the awards sank in, especially as to what it says about privately owned newspapers that are not part of the bigger conglomerates such as Media 24 and Caxton. “I can say with all certainty that it is the first time ever that a journalist from a Limpopo

publication wins the Journalist of the Year award since Sanlam first presented this competi-tion in 1991,” said Mr Hugo Redelinghuys, the

former organiser of the Sanlam awards for almost 20 years. “If I am not mistaken, it is also one of the very few times that a newspaper, not forgetting that it is a small, privately owned newspaper, has scooped up so many awards and had so many top-three nominations in the history of the competition. This competition has always been dominated by the bigger media houses,” he added.

The Zoutpansberger is a member of LiN Media, a Limpopo-based umbrella body for privately owned newspapers. LiN Media aims to promote journalistic excellence. Other members include the Limpopo Mirror, Bulletin (Tzaneen), Noor-delike Nuus (Mokopane), Die Pos (Bela-Bela), Die Kwêvoël (Thabazimbi), The Beat (Bela-Bela) and Kruger2Canyon (Hoedspruit). “All of these publications have produced winners and finalists at the annual MDDA/Sanlam awards the past few

years. Just last year, Herman Steyn from Die Pos walked away with the Press Photographer of the Year award. This says a lot about the quality of the publications within the LiN Media stable,” said Van Zyl. Steyn was a top-three finalist in the photography category for features and portraits once again this year.

“I am honoured in receiving this title, but it is not all of my own doing. This would not have been possible without the support, hard work and input of every single one of my colleagues and friends at the Zoutpansberger. So too did the community play its part in this. If it were not for them and their stories, sometimes at their expense and sadness, I would have had anything to write about. No, this is not my award, it’s an award for every reader who supports what we as a newspaper try to be – a voice for the community,” said Van Zyl.

No small feat for small newspaper

The Zoutpansberger’s Isabel Venter was nominated as a top three finalist in both the human interest writing category and news photography category.

“No, this is not my award, it’s an award for every reader who support what we as a newspaper try to be – a

voice for the community”

082 454 5886.

Environmental News

A recent article in the Zoutpansberger’s sister publication, the Limpopo Mirror, about a villager who claimed to have killed a tokoloshe has environmentalists and nature lovers fuming.

In the 8 May edition of the Limpopo Mirror, Mr Fhulufhedzani Munzhelele of Tshifudi-Mushungwa outside Thohoyandou proudly displayed the dead remains of what he believed to be a tokoloshe that he had killed. The poor animal, however, was not a tokoloshe but just an unfortunate bushbaby.

“For a zoologist or nature enthusiast, there is nothing strange about the creature the community member is holding in his hands in the photo accom-panying the article. The animal is neither unknown nor dangerous.

“The English common name for this animal is the greater galago or greater bushbaby (Otolemur crassicaudatus), the latter name stemming from the baby-like calls the animal makes at night. In TshiVenda, it is known as zelehani. The greater bushbaby uses these calls to communicate with other bushbabies – much like the roar of a lion or a dog’s bark,” said Ms Bibi Linden, local conservationist and PhD researcher.

Linden explained that the bushbaby belongs to the

primates, like baboons, monkeys and humans. South Africa is home to two different kinds of bushbabies: the greater bushbaby (the one Mr. Munzhelele chose to kill) and the lesser bushba-by – as the name indicates, the lesser bushbaby is much smaller than the greater bushbaby.

“Bushbabies are active sporadically through-out the night, moving from their daytime resting places at about sunset. They live in small groups of up to six individuals, but generally search for food on their own. The greater bushbaby mainly feeds on fruit and vegetable matter and gum from the sweet thorn, being predominantly vegetarian. It generally does not eat meat or hunt other animals. Although the calls of the bushbaby can be heard frequently in areas where they occur, they are very shy creatures and getting a glimpse of them in the wild is a rare and special occasion,” said Linden

The greater bushbaby can be found in forests, including those along streams and rivers, well-developed woodlands and thick-ets. Bushbabies spend most of their time in the canopy of trees but do occasionally come to the ground when searching for food. The greater bushbaby mostly moves in the canopy of trees on all four legs, walking or running along branches. When on the ground, they can sometimes be seen hopping on their hind legs, moving in a semi-upright position on two legs only and using their tail for balance. “The greater bushbaby is increasingly threatened by the loss of forest and woodland habitat in the country,” said Linden.

Linden appealed to people to refrain from killing or persecuting these fascinating animals. “They pose no threat to humans whatsoever and there is absolutely no need to be afraid of them. As every living creature on the planet, bushbabies play an important role in nature and they are part of South Africa’s amazing natural heritage which we should all be proud of and help protect for the generations to come,” Linden said. She added that the com-plete lack of understanding of the character of this animal, particularly fuelling fear that this harmless species poses a threat to people, can result in detrimental impacts on populations of this gentle primate, similar to the unfounded belief concerning the medicinal properties of rhino horn.

The Agapé African Choir of Louis Trichardt did the Vhembe District and Limpopo proud by being nominated for a 2015 Mzansi Gospel Music Award.

The Mzansi Gospel Music Awards, a prestigious new awards event, celebrate achievers in the vari-ous arenas of gospel music in South Africa.

Several famous gospel artists are among the nominees in the various categories of the compe-tition, such as the legendary Benjamin Dube, Joe Niemand and Spirit of Praise. The awards evening takes place on 13 June at the Mosaïek Teatro in Randburg.

“We have been nominated in the Best Group/Duo category, and are up against some stiff competition. For us, as a local church choir from a relatively small town, it is an honour to be nominated amongst some of the biggest names in gospel music in

South Africa. “We are truly humbled by this and are looking

forward to attending the event,” said Pastor Grant Clifton, choir leader and one of the pastors of the Agapé Christian Centre in Louis Trichardt.

“We would like to ask for the support of the people of Louis Trichardt, Vhembe and Limpopo, by having you vote for us. Your vote for us is of the utmost importance and will increases our chance of winning this award,” asked the choir members.

The others nominees in the Group/Duo cat-egory are the well-known Spirit of Praise, the award-winning We will Worship, Chosen and Spax & Newlight.

The Mzansi Gospel Music Awards have been launched by Raaloe Media, under the leadership of managing director Edzani Eezy Ratshikhopha. Their objective is to honour excellence, creativity, authenticity and diligence within the contemporary gospel music genre.

The Agapé African Choir was formed in 2012 as a ministry of the Agapé Christian Centre. Subse-quently, the choir had various local performances and participated in two international tours and have performed in South Korea, Indonesia and Malaysia in various settings.

The Nowon Full Gospel Church, a 40 000 mem-ber church in Seoul with their Sungmin Foundation, took such an interest in the local choir that they sent a fact-finding team to Louis Trichardt in November last year to film and create promotional video clips of the choir and their impact on the community.

The choir produced their first album, Agapé African Choir, in 2014. “The album has been very well received. The CD is currently available from the church, and also online through the choir’s website (www.agapeafricanchoir.com) and on iTunes,” said pastor Clifton.

To vote, SMS “Group Agape African Choir” to 34499, at a cost of R2 per SMS.

Visit a first for SACCI’s Louis Trichardt branch For the first time ever, the national president of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), Mr Vusi Khumalo, paid a visit to the SACCI branch in Louis Trichardt.

Khumalo held a meeting with the local SACCI executive on Friday, 22 May. During his visit, he shared SACCI’s vision and focus, specifically with regard to support for those chambers outside the large metros.

“It is of paramount importance that businesses become involved with their Chamber of Com-merce. The challenges with regard to changes in the political and regulatory environment require businesses to start to revisit their network and, in so doing, become more involved as a collective. The local chamber is the only platform from where

that collective can raise issues of concern and also submit solutions through a recognized channel to whoever is responsible,” Khumalo said.

Khumalo will also be a key-note speaker at the Louis Trichardt annual general meeting later this year. “We as Louis Trichardt Chamber urge busi-nesses to become members. Tough times are ahead, and we need each and everyone’s contribution to address not only that which you as a business have control over but, within this supportive environ-ment, that we also address those challenges which you do not have control over, and in so doing, identify actions to mitigate external risk factors,” said local SACCI president Mr Pieter Els.

For more information on how to become a mem-ber, Els can be contacted at 079 690 6034.

Pictured during the historical visit are (from left to right) local SACCI executive members Ms Jana Smith, Mr Duncan Meyfarth, Mr Pieter Els (local SACCI president), Mr Vusi Khumalo (national SACCI president) and Mr Iain Purdon (local SACCI vicepresident). Photo supplied.

Foto verskaf.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORISATION AND WATER USE LICENSE FOR ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES AT THE VELE COLLIERY

REF: VELE 2.0_______________________________________________________________________________________Applicant: Limpopo Coal Company (Pty) LtdLocation: Farms Bergen op Zoom 124 MS and Overvlakte 125 MS Ptn 3 & 4 in Musina Local Municipality, Vhembe DistrictNotice is hereby given of the intent to submit an application for Environmental Authorisation in terms of the 2014 Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations (GN No. R.982 to 985) promulgated in terms of the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 (NEMA) on 4 December 2014, and for a Water Use Licence for water uses stipulated in terms of Section 21 of the National Water Act 36 of 1998 (NWA).Project Description: The planned activities are described below.• There are two (2) tributaries which confluence into one which carries clean surface run-off through the

mining activities area, as approved. In order to comply with legislation, this run-off needs to be diverted around the “dirty water” area of the mine. The clean run-off will be diverted into a tributary just to the east which passes the mining activities on the eastern side. This is termed the Eastern Diversion Works.

• Similarly, there is a well-defined tributary flowing through the future mining area to the west (footprint as approved in the 2010 EMP for Vele Colliery). The clean run-off water from this tributary will be diverted into a neighbouring tributary located to the west of the mining activities, by means of constructing a diver-sion berm to take the water around the “dirty water” area. This is termed the Western Diversion Works.

• In order to prevent high flow scenarios and potential downstream flooding as a result of the two diversion works, Attenuation Dams may be constructed downstream of the diversion structures. The exact size and position of these dams (if required) still need to be determined by the civil engineers.

• A third Pollution Control Dam (PCD) with a 10 000m³ capacity and not exceeding the 5m wall height will be constructed within the mining area. The combined quantity of the current two PCD’s plus the additional PCD will be 48 750 m3, which falls below the limit that triggers a new listed activity. The life of mine operations indicates that a third PCD will ensure compliance with sound environment practice in terms of dirty water management and pollution prevention.

• In addition to the above, the 1:100 year flood-line shows that the north western corner of the future mining area is below the flood level of the well-defined tributary associated with the Western Diversion Works. A flood protection structure is required to protect this portion of the pit. This is termed the Flood Protection Berm.

Legal Requirements:Listed Activities 12, 19, 24 and 27 are triggered by the proposed infrastructure developments as described above, requiring an application for Environmental Authorisation in terms of Listing Notice 1 (GNR No. R.983) of the 2014 EIA Regulations following a Basic Assessment procedure as described by the Regulations. In addition, the proposed infrastructure developments trigger water use in terms of Section 21(c) and (i) for the diversions / flood protection berm and Section 21(b) for the attenuation dams (if required) of the NWA.As part of the Basic Assessment procedure an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) needs to be compiled. For the purpose of this project this will involve the review and integration of all existing (approved) EMPs for Vele Colliery and development of a consolidated EMP for the full operation, inclusive of all existing activities and new proposed infrastructure developments.Opportunity to participate: Jacana Environmentals cc has been appointed as the Independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner to undertake the Basic Assessment Process, with the support of Naledi Development Restructured (Pty) Ltd in the associated Public Participation Process.Interested and Affected Parties (IAPs) are invited to register and provide written comments. IAPs should refer to the reference number above, and must provide their comments with their name, contact details (preferred method of notification, e.g. email address or fax number) and an indication of any direct business, financial, personal or other interest which they have in the application to the contact person indicated below by no later than 26 June2015 (30 days). For more information contact: Fransis de la Rosa PO Box 13509, Sinoville, 0129. Cricket News

The past weekend saw the first matches being played in the Louis Trichardt Cricket Club’s new 20/20 league sponsored by Limpopo Dairy.

Saturday saw Limpopo coming up against the Werda Toyota Vikings on the A field. Limpopo batted first and managed 167 runs for the loss of four wickets in their allocated 20 overs. Top scor-ers with the bat were Chrisjan Hendriks (39 of 37 balls), Leon Olwage (82 of 34 balls) and Nimesh (29 of 31 balls). For the Vikings, Morné Olwage took two wickets for the loss of 24 runs in his four overs, while Leon Furstenburg took 1 for 29 in his four overs.

In response to the target Limpopo had set, the Vikings only managed 142 runs before they were all bowled out in 17.3 overs. Performing the best with the bat was Morné Olwage (35 of 31), Warno Smit (40 of 19) and Coenie Oosthuizen (14 of 17).

Helping secure Limpopo a victory were bowlers Gerrie Oelofse (4 for 15 in 3.4 overs) and Joubert Fourie (2 for 18 in 3 overs).

On Sunday, also on the A-field, the Mustangs came up against the team from Imperial GM. The Mustangs won the toss and batted first, scoring 77 run for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Top scorers for the team were Jaco Oosthuizen (17), Johan Jacobs (17) and Christo Gerber (10).

Imperial GM’s bowlers were devastating with Johnathan Janse van Rensburg taking 3 for 6 in

1 over, while Ikram Kamboli took 4 for 17. The bowler’s hard work paid dividends for Imperial GM and steered them to a victory. Their batsmen scored the winning runs for the loss of five wickets. Top performers with the bat were Christo Boshoff (20), Henrie van der Walt (20 not out) and Irfan Chachrel (18 not out). For the Mustangs, bowler Johan Jacobs took 3 for 27, while Jaco Oosthuizen took 2 for 17.

The Way, the Truth and the Life

2 Corinthians 11:16-33

The Christian life is not a bed of ros-es, there are many thorns along the

way. In most parts of the Western world, Christians are tolerated, even if they are not always liked, and there is no organised persecution of the church. However, in other parts of the world tens of thousands of Christians are murdered each year, just because they love Christ and speak to oth-ers about the wonderful Saviour they serve.

There are great blessings and rewards promised to all who serve Christ faithful-ly, despite the cruel opposition of Satan and the world. (Read Matthew 5:10-12)

So all Christians face the opposition of the world in some degree and some of them will become martyrs for Christ.

In our reading we have a brief outline of the way the apostle Paul suffered as he travelled to world, preaching and serving Christ. Paul had been thrown into prisons, whipped, stoned and on three occasions had been shipwrecked. Yet by God’s grace he remained faithful to Christ. Throughout history many Christians lost their lives because of their love for Christ.

Paul said that it is worth suffering the worst that the world can do to us, because glory is waiting for Christ’s followers. Nothing is worth comparing to the glory that awaits God’s people.

Yes, all the sufferings for Christ are worthwhile. When we arrive in heaven we will live in the land of no sin, the land of glory. There will be no pain, no suffering, no tears and no more death, just everlasting joy in the presence of Christ, who loved us and died for us so that we might live with Him.

Maandagoggend.

Bernard werk in Kaapstad.

Uiteindelik voel

Dis nog voor brêkfi s dat Daisy by At se Gat stop.

“Ek is Lolla.

“Mmm. Nee dankie, Lolla. Ek is Daisy en vandag wil ek liewers borrels in my lewe hê.

Daisy glimlag. Haar soort mens – anders as almal hier rond.

“Kom nou, kom nou.

Tjeers. Vertel my

I am an “oldie” living at Ons Tuiste in Louis Trichardt.

I have been in residence for six months and am pleased that I live here!

Before moving in, I had quite a few fears and misgivings about homes for the aged in general and was not looking forward to the change in my life, i.e. living in an “institution” as I thought of these homes.

But my fears have been for nothing as I am happy, content-

ed and feel very secure here. The management and staff are incredi-bly caring, helpful and the residents very friendly - everyone helping each other.

The food is very good and healthy. We have various visits from altruistic groups quite often and everyone’s religious affi liations are respected and catered for. I am very pleased that I am here and salute and bless all those who care for us so well.

Once again the annual Turbi Hills Mountain Bike race attracted diehard fans.

Turbi Hills Race makes cyclists work hard

Kombo Bere won the Turbi Hills Mountain Bike race for the second year in a row.

Local mountain bikers once again took on the gruelling Turbi Hills Mountain Bike Race over the past weekend.

This annual race is hosted by the MOTHs’ Turbi Hills Shellhole in Louis Trichardt in the Roodewal Plantation.

This year’s 50km event attracted 14 die-hard local cyclists. The podium in this event was dominated by men, with Kombo Bere and Nico Geldenhuys defending their 2014 Turbi Hills titles. Bere finished first, followed by Geldenhuys and Fanus Eksteen in third place.

Bere was also the first junior, while Geldenhuys was the first sub-veteran.

Jernay McLeod, the only rose among the thorns in the 50km race, took an overall ninth position.

In the 30km race, the overall winner was Richard Lambert, followed by Francois Labuschagne in second and Turner de Swart in third place.

Caron Foord was the first woman home in the 30km. She was followed by Jadie McLeod in second place and Marnelle Pessegueira in third.

In the 8km fun ride, the first boy home was Jonathan Taylor, followed by Reese Coetzee and Mulamga Malima in third place. Ngonidzashe Bere was the first girl, followed by Charlene Bothma in second and Michelle Steyn in third place.

Angling News

The officer commanding of Air Force Base Makhado outside Louis Trichardt, Brigadier General Schalk van Heerden, hailed members of the base’s Flurian Angling Club for being crowned the SA Natıonal Defence Force Angling Champions for the year 2015.

The annual Defence Freshwater Bank Angling Champıonshıp was held at the Bloemhof Dam (North West) from 2 to 9 May. Van Heerden furthermore congratulated four of the club’s an-glers for being nominated into the SA National Defence Force Angling Team that will participate at national level.

The chairperson of the Flurian Angling Club, warrant officer (W/O) Koos Erasmus, thanked his team members for a sterling performance during the championship. According to Erasmus, the pur-

pose of the competition was to promote friendship among its members through angling as a sport. Additionally, the main goal was to select the best individuals who will then represent the South Afri-can National Defence Force Team at national level.

Erasmus said that the championshıp was very tough this year since they were competing against the toughest teams from across all provinces. Some of the provinces which participated were Gauteng, Free State, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, Limpopo Province and North West Province. Each province had three teams, with some of these teams boasting anglers wearing the Protea and SAFBAF colours.

The Lımpopo team was represented by at least six anglers, one development angler, a team captain and one official. The competition became tougher each day, which left many anglers battling to land

the most fish and weigh in the heaviest bag in the allocated time given for fishing. The Limpopo team, which had been struggling to win gold for the past eight years, did exceptionally well this time around, with anglers such as flight sergeant (F/Sgt) Mark Thompson, who netted the most fish. He was subsequently crowned Victor Ludorum (over-all winner) for most fish and heaviest bag. Team-mate WO Joe Mphela took the honour of being Victor Ludorum in the development section.

A 12-man team was chosen to represent the

SANDF Angling Team, where four of the anglers were from AFB Makhado. They are W/O Dawıe Stolts (11th overall), W/O Richardt Lambert (fifth overall), F/Sgt Louıs Kruger (eighth overall) and F/Sgt Mark Thompson (first overall). Captain Frikkie van Deventer of AFB Makhado was one of the officials who was overseeing that the rules of the game were properly followed.

Building on the team’s success, Van Heerden urged members of the base, and in particular those

participating in sports, to unite through sports within its ranks. In addition, he said, it was the duty of every sportsperson to promote the spirit of camaraderie to all members as, after all, sports promote a healthy life style. Adding to this, Eras-mus said that angling as one of the sporting codes at the base, was open to all members of the base, including defence civilians who were interested in joıning, regardless of their age, ethnicity, gender, colour or creed.

A winning team! Anglers from the Flurian Angling Club at AFB Makhado, pictured during the annual Defence Freshwater Bank Angling Championship at Bloemhof. They went on to win the championships, with four of the team members being selected for the SANDF angling team. In front, from left to right, are WO Piet Smith, WO Joe Mphela and F/Sgt Louie Kruger.
