Established in March 2005, State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (Xiamen University) (MEL) is sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). It was categorized as one of the best state key laboratories in last two nation-wide reviews (in 2010 and 2015) sponsored by MOST.

MEL is dedicated to cutting-edge research on global change. Emphasizing fundamental and interdisciplinary research, and utilizing technological innovation, MEL’s focus is on marine biogeochemistry and its interactions with the marine ecosystem. The ultimate goal of MEL is to be an internationally recognized institution in advanced marine environmental research and a platform for fostering talent and academic cooperation.

简介

近海海洋环境科学国家重点实验室(厦门大学)(英文缩写为“MEL”)于2005年3月启动建设,2007年6月通过科技部验收,2010年、2015年连续两次被评为优秀国家重点实验室。

实验室瞄准与全球变化有关的重大科学问题,直面国家对海洋环境保护和生态安全的重大需求,立足基础研究,以多学科交叉为基础、以技术创新为动力、主攻海洋生物地球化学过程及其与海洋生态系统相互作用,关注在自然变化和人类活动影响下的海洋生态系统对环境变化的响应和反馈。实验室坚持走国际化发展道路,科学研究力求具备国际视野,管理体系参比国际标准,文化建设崇尚自由宽松,努力建设成为具有重要国际影响力的海洋环境科学研究和创新性人才聚集的基地。

创新研究群体Innovative ResearchGroups

“海洋生物地球化学过程与机制”基金委创新研究群体(2006.1-2014.12)

“海洋生物地球化学过程与机制”创新研究群体于2005年获得国家自然科学基金资助,并于2008年、2011年获得两次延续支持。群体由戴民汉和焦念志担任学术带头人,共14名科研骨干组成。

该团队是我国海洋科学领域首个获得三期资助的群体。团队成员发挥生物海洋学与化学海洋学深层次交叉的优势,系统开展了边缘海碳循环过程中的关键生物地球化学过程和机制研究。

NSFC Innovative Research Group on NITROGEN CYCLE UNDER GLOBAL CHANGE (2018.1-2023.12)

Led by Shuh-Ji Kao, the group on “Nitrogen cycle under global change” was funded in 2017 by NSFC for Innovative Research Groups. Other key members include Min Chen, Kunshan Gao, Zhiyu Liu, Dalin Shi, and Yao Zhang. Based on multi-approaches of isotope biogeochemistry, marine microbial ecology, molecular ecology and physical oceanography, the project is to improve our understanding on mechanisms of response and feedback of marine N cycle to climate change, and to construct a marine ecological model with predictive capability.

“海洋氮循环与全球变化”创新研究群体于2017年获得国家自然科学基金资助,群体以高树基为学术带头人,主要成员包括陈敏、高坤山、刘志宇、史大林以及张瑶。将通过同位素生物地球化学、微生物生态学、分子生态学和物理海洋学的交叉,深入研究全球变化对于海洋氮循

“海洋环境生理与毒理学研究”团队于2010年入选教育部创新团队。该创新团队由高坤山和王克坚为学术带头人,共13名科研人员组成。团队成员重点在海洋酸化的分子响应、新研究方法拓展、生态毒理学等方面开展了交叉合作,围绕海洋环境污

染生理生态效应展开深入研究。

MOE Innovative Research Group (2010.1-2012.12; 2014.1-2016.12)

The Innovative Research Group on “Studies on Marine Environmental Physiology and Toxicology” was sponsored by Ministry of Education. This group, led by Kunshan Gao and Kejian Wang, aims to explore the physiological and toxicological impacts of organic pollutants. This team has made progress in understanding the molecular response to ocean acidification, the development of new research methods, ecological toxicology, physiological and ecological effects of marine environmental pollution.

NSFC Innovative Research Group on MARINE BIOGEOCHEMISTRY (2006.1-2014.12)

The Group of Excellence “Marine Biogeochemistry: Processes and Mechanisms” was first supported by NSFC for Innovative Research Groups in 2006, with two 3-year renewals of support (until 2014). Among marine science groups, this is the first one that’s received three terms of funding. The group is comprised of 14 MEL scientists, led by Minhan Dai and Nianzhi Jiao.

Taking advantage of the research experience on biological oceanography and chemical oceanography, they’ve made great strides towards understanding the major biogeochemical processes and mechanisms involved in carbon cycling in the marginal seas.

学术交流与合作是实验室一大特色,实验室通过国际合作基地、“111”创新引智计划、访问学者与开放课题基金、凌峰

论坛等多种合作平台,开展大量高层次学术交流和实质性的科研合作。注重搭建若干关键领域的联合实验室,如与香港海

洋污染国家重点实验室(香港城市大学)建立伙伴实验室关系,与香港科技大学成立“近海观测与模拟联合实验室”。着

力推进与美国特拉华大学、缅因大学、及加拿大达尔豪西大学等境外高水平研究院校的合作关系。实验室还多次成功举

办大、中型国际、国内会议,在大型国际会议上发起或组织分会。自2014年始,实验室发起组织每两年一届的国际会议

“厦门海洋环境开放科学大会”。

A series of platforms, such as MOST “International Science and Technology Cooperation Base”, “111” Program, MEL Visiting Fellowship and Open Science Fund, and “Lingfeng Forum”, have formed an effective system for facilitating and stimulating cooperation and communication among our members and colleagues around the world. Furthermore, MEL has continued to cultivate partnerships with leading institutions around the world. The Joint Institute for Coastal Research and Management was established with the University of Delaware in 2008. In 2009, MEL established a partnership with the State Key Lab (Hong Kong) in Marine Pollution (City University of Hong Kong), and The Joint Lab for Coastal Observations and Modeling with the Fok Ying Tung Research Institute of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. MEL has also organized a number of international and national meetings. The serial international conference - Xiamen Symposium on Marine Environmental Science (XMAS) was initiated in 2014.

“111”计划“111”Program

“海洋生物地球化学”创新引智计划(简称“111”计划)获得教

育部、外专局连续两期资助(2007-2011,2012-2016)。该资助

为实验室提供了一个稳定的交流合作平台,通过海外专家与实验室

科研骨干的交流与融合,促进开展高水平、整合性的合作研究。由

黄天福教授任海外学术大师,戴民汉教授任国内学术带头人。

The international collaborative project “Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecotoxicology” (2007-2011) was funded through the Program of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities (known as the “111” Program), and it has been renewed for a second funding term (2012-2016).

Led by Prof. George T. F. Wong (overseas) and Prof. Minhan Dai (MEL), the project focuses on marine biogeochemical processes and mechanisms. It provides MEL scientists, technicians, staff and students with an excellent platform for dynamic academic exchange and cooperation with overseas institutions.

The World Harbor Project (WHP) 2nd Global Partners Meeting took place on September 26-28, 2017 in Xiamen. 45 participants from 13 partner cities across 6 continents attended the meeting. Discussions were based on four themes: 1) water and sediment quality, 2) green engineering, 3) multiple uses and users, and 4) education. Initiated by the Sydney Institute of Marine Science in 2014, WHP aims to develop resilient urban ports and harbors through a global network of collaborating cities. Xiamen (represented by Yunwei Dong) joined the Project in 2016.

访问学者基金MEL Visiting Fellowship Program

结合实验室开放课题,于2009年设立"杰出访问学者基金"。

该基金支持访问学者来实验室开展1至6个月不等的学术交流与合

作。该基金的设立,使实验室不断发挥作为海洋环境领域国家公

共研究平台的作用,吸引了国内外诸多知名专家及青年学者来实

验室开展合作研究。

MEL has launched a “Visiting Fellowship Program” for visiting scholars in marine science to conduct collaborative research with MEL members. Combined with the MEL Open Science Fund, the program offers visiting scholars financial support for 1-6 month stays in Xiamen, covering research needs, travel and living expenses.

凌峰论坛Lingfeng Forum

以中青年科学家为主要发起人,邀请国内外同行参加,自2004年发起的凌峰论坛,持续发挥了“启迪新思维、促进学术融合”之重要作

用,推动实验室营造自由的学术交流环境与弘扬民主的学术风气。

Initiated in 2004, Lingfeng Forum continues to play an important role as a platform for enlightening new ideas and promoting academic fusion for MEL researchers.

周一午餐交流会与学术沙龙Weekly Luncheon Seminar Series and Academic Salon

2014年3月起,实验室每周一邀请校内外专家学者做学术讲座,每

个月组织一次学术沙龙活动,内容涵盖学术探讨、运行管理、平台

建设等各个方面。师生们共进午餐,或交流最新学术进展,碰撞学

术火花;或对科学热点展开讨论,为MEL的发展献计献策。

实验室于2016年12月设立“博士生奖学金”,每年9月开放申请,

MEL initiated the MEL PhD Fellowship in December of 2016. The Fellowship is offered in marine environmental sciences and other interdisciplinary research that fit into MEL's research scopes. Applicants must have already obtained or been currently working towards a master degree and are seeking admission as new full-time PhD students.

A dual PhD degree program in oceanography is offered between Xiamen University (XMU) and the University of Delaware (UD), which allows students from either university to earn a doctoral degree from both institutions. The program is based on acceptance of equivalent courses taken at either university and a tuition waiver at the host university.

The MEL Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) Program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science and technology careers by providing research experiences at MEL. It requires 1-3 month(s) of research time at MEL, and provides travel expenses, accommodation and a subsidy for students, and a research grant for project supervisors.

中国海洋科学卓越教育伙伴计划(英文简称COSEE China)由厦门大

学、中国海洋大学、北京大学、南京大学、同济大学、浙江大学、中

国地质大学等七所高校发起,2010年8月建立。计划旨在通过科学家

和教育工作者之间的密切合作,提高公众的海洋环境保护意识,培养

下一代海洋学家。

实验室主要依托该计划开展海洋科学普及与公众教育,每年举办“海

洋科学开放日”,并通过与大中小学、企事业单位合作,开展不同层

面的活动,推广海洋科学与文化,推动海洋科学研究与教育的发展。

Established in 2010, Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence of China (COSEE China) is a platform which seeks to bridge the gap between researchers, educators, and the public. By forging links between these groups, it aims to not only enhance public awareness about the ocean but to cultivate the next generation

The 6th International SOLAS (Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study) Summer School was hosted by MEL in 2013.

Centre of Major Equipment and Technology (COMET)

With strong support from both academic and technical staff, COMET was established in June 2008 to increase efficiency, lower running costs, and better maintain MEL’s large equipments. COMET has successfully established a framework with necessary infrastructure and operational protocols. The web-based equipment inventory, together with the maintenance and booking system, have fully demonstrated the openness, transparency, efficiency and professionalism that an advanced laboratory should have. Special attention has been paid to laboratory safety and technical staff training so as to provide a safe and effective infrastructure and state-of-the-art technological support to boost research excellence.

The R/V TKK was put in service in 2017. It strives to provide safe, efficient and advanced shipboard technical support to oceanographic expeditions. Commissioned with tailor-designed low-noise electric propulsion system, the vessel has outstanding science handling abilities, equipped with state-of-the-art acoustic transducers, with highly precise dynamic positioning performance and broad-band data transmission capability, enabling it to carry out multi-disciplinary field observations in global ice-free waters.

东山太古海洋观测与实验站Dongshan Swire Marine Station (D-SMART)

在太古集团慈善信托基金的部分捐赠下,厦门大学东山太古海洋观测与实验站(以下简称“东山站”)自2011年在福建省东山县西埔镇

苏峰山启动建设。东山站距厦门市约173公里,占地87.59亩,面向台湾海峡开阔水域,位于省级珊瑚自然保护区。2017年5月31日,一

期主体建筑碧海楼完工,标志着东山站的正式启用。

东山站以监测全球气候及由人类活动引起的环境变化对海洋生态系统造成的影响为研究方向,希望建成长期稳定的海-陆-气界面环境要素

观测平台、开放的海洋科学与技术实验基地、海洋观测仪器研究与测试基地以及科普及教学实习基地,并致力于成为海洋观测与实验的国

际合作基地。

With financial assistance from the Swire Group Charitable Trust, the Dongshan Swire Marine Station of Xiamen University (D-SMART) started construction in 2011. The station is located at Sufeng Mountain, Xipu Town, Dongshan County, about 173 km away from Xiamen. It covers an area about 14.43 acre and faces the open waters of the Taiwan Strait. It is located on the provincial coral nature reserve. On May 31, 2017, the first phase of D-SMART (Aqua Building) was completed.

D-SMART will serve for long-term time-series observations and offer the setting to study marine ecology and test instrumentation, for monitoring and understanding responses of the marine ecosystem to both climate change and anthropogenic activities.

为了探讨海洋酸化对海洋生物及生态系统的影响及其机制,实验室在厦门市

五缘湾建成“海洋酸化影响研究中水量试验平台”。这是全球首个使用全太

阳能驱动供电、亚洲最大的围隔试验平台。自2013年初建成以来,已完成4

次海洋酸化围隔实验,数次潮间带实验,以及原位生物、海水化学等参数的

现场观测等研究。

The Mesocosm Facility for Ocean Acidification Impact Study of the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL, Xiamen University) (FOANIC-XMU) was set up in Wuyuan Bay in 2013. FOANIC is fully solar-powered for all instruments on board.

A series of experiments has been carried out successfully. These include, experiments to understand the impact of OA and the competition of different phytoplankton groups, several intertidal experiments and in situ observations of biological and chemical parameters.

队伍建设Faculty and Staff

实验室现有固定研究人员60人,其中教授40人,副教授18人、助理教授2人;另有技术人员30人,研究助理57人,行政人员6人。所有固定研究人员均有海外留学或访学经历,其中海外博士(后)39人,占65%。40岁以下青年骨干25人,占42%。

实验室拥有中国科学院院士2人,厦门大学特聘教授15人,国家杰出青年科学基金获得者5人,国家“万人计划”领军人才3人。此外,实验室的一批年轻骨干队伍正在健康成长,已有国家优秀青年科学基金获得者5人。实验室还拥有2个国家自然科学基金创新研究群体、1个科技部重点领域创新团队和1个教育部创新团队。

MEL has developed a hardworking research team with integrity and innovation. At present, the lab has 60 full-time research members, including 2 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 finalists of the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 2 Chair Professors, 3 Minjiang Chair Professors, 5 XMU Chair Professors, 5 grantees of the NSFC Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 recipients of National High-Level Personnel of Special Support Program. Additionally, 5 young scientists received grants under the NSFC Excellent Young Scientists Fund.

MEL has 2 Innovative Research Groups funded by the NSFC, 1 Innovative Team funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), and another Group sponsored by the Ministry of Education (MOE).
