DEFINITION OF CTL

Contextual Teaching & Learning (CTL) is anapproach of teaching that helps teacher andstudents to relate subject matter content to

real life situation and motivate students toconnect and apply all aspects of learning intotheir real life.

1. CONSTRUCTIVISM

Constructivism means thatthe students think & constructtheir own words and ideas.

Why constructivism? More meaningful. Learning is not in vain. Social interaction. Making sense. Knowledge is constructed

from experience.

Inquiry means that the students

seek & find truth, information, and knowledge by themselves.

2. INQUIRY

In the teaching and learning

activity, inquiry process can bedone like: Formulating problem. Collecting data through observation.

Analyzing and presenting data. Communicating and presenting

the result of data to the readers, classmates, and the other

audiences

3. QUESTIONING Questioning means that teacherand students feel free to ask somequestions during teaching andlearning process.

Questioning activity is useful to: Dig up information. Check students’ understanding.  Generate a response to students. Know the extent of the students’

curiosity. Know the things that are already

known by the students. Focus the students’ attention.  Refresh the students’ knowledge.

 4. LEARNING COMMUNITY

In learning community, the resultof learning can be acquired fromgathering others, from sharing

with friends, and other groups.

Learning community means that thestudents learn together in a group.

5. MODELING

In a learning and teaching process, there are

models that can be replicated. As the model, it canbe a teacher, students or other person outside.

Teacher plays a role to give an example to thestudents. The teacher demonstrates what thestudents want to learn.

Modeling means that the

teacher gives example byshowing model about thematerial learned

6. REFLECTION

Reflection means that the

teacher & students rethinkabout the lesson that has beenlearned. In this case, what andhow did they feel during the

teaching and learning process.

This activity is done inthe end of the teachingand learning process. Itaims to repeat what the

students learn.

Essentially, the question that needs to be answered by

authentic assessment is Do the students learnsomething? What have they already known? So, thestudents are assessed through many ways, not only bytheir examination test.

7. AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

Authentic assessment means that the students’  knowledge & skill are measured through many ways.

CTL VS TTL

CONTEXTUALTEACHING & LEARNING

TRADITIONALTEACHING & LEARNING

Students are active Students are passive

Students centre Teacher centre

Focus on meaningful learning Focus on memorizing

Teamwork Individually

Real life material Theoretical & abstract material

Interesting & fun Boring

BENEFIT OF CTL

The students become active in getting information.Teamwork in a group activity.

The students are able to discover the relationship between

the materials learned to their real life situation and apply itin life.

The students’   behaviour are built by self-awareness andintrinsic motivation.

The learning process can take place in outside ofclassroom, not only in inside of classroom.

Skill is developed based on students’   comprehension, not

on memorizing.

CONCLUSION

Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL)helps us to relate subject matter content to

real world situations and motivate students

to make connections between knowledge

and its applications to their life.
