Rutland may be small in size but that hasn't

stopped our beautiful county from making a

splash on the big screen. If you're a keen

follower of TV & Film dramas then you may have

noticed a few familiar 'faces'.

Tom Cruise, who famously carries out his own

daredevil stunts, was filmed at nearby RAF

Wittering for 'Mission: Impossible 5 – Rogue

Nation'. Clinging on to the outside of an Airbus

A400M Atlas military transporter, Cruise was

filmed as it took off from the runway and

climbed 5,000ft into the air!

Popular Police drama, Happy Valley, returned to

TV screens in February, with scenes from the

second series filmed at Rutland’s Oakham

Enterprise Park.

The acclaimed BBC1 show featuring Sarah

Lancashire, and rising star James Norton, started

again on Tuesday 9th February. Cast and crew

could be seen filming at Oakham Enterprise

Park in December, making use of one of the

remaining prison blocks. Oakham Enterprise

Park is fast becoming an increasingly

popular film and photography location.

The site has also been used for filming

Panorama, Crims (a BBC3 comedy drama)

and This Is England (directed by Shane

Meadows) as well as several short films.

Happy Valley has won more than 30 awards

since first hitting our screens in 2014,

including a BAFTA for Best Drama Series in

2015. You can catch up with the show

online using the BBC iPlayer.

With the Film industry finding Rutland such

an interesting county to film in, it's no

wonder that actors & crews can often be

found staying in several of our exclusive

hotels.

award-winning collection of individually designed gardens, tucked

created by Geoff Hamilton for the Gardeners’ World TV

‘rooms’, ranging from romantic, cottage-style plantings to more

modern designs, a Japanese garden, woodlands teeming with

wildlife and the famous productive areas which now help to supply

the Barnsdale Tea Room. New for 2016 is the redesigned Winter

Border, being redeveloped to mark 20 years since Geoff's untimely

death, and visitors to the Gardens will be able to watch its progress

n 8 Rutland sausages (available from Nelson’s Butchers in

Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford)

n 4 rashers smoked bacon, cut into thin strips

n 100g chorizo, roughly chopped

n 200g dried puy lentils

n 1 clove garlic, peeled and chopped

n 1 carrot, peeled and finely chopped

n 2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped

n 2 celery sticks, peeled and finely chopped

n 2 sprigs thyme

n 2 bay leaves

n 100ml Madeira

n 100ml red wine

n 50ml sherry vinegar

n 2 tbsp tomato puree

n 1 litre chicken stock

n 500ml Grainstore 10/50 ale

n 1 butternut squash, peeled and cut into wedges

n 50g unsalted butter

n 50ml rapeseed oil

n 3 sage leaves, roughly chopped

n 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed

n 1 sprig thyme

n 2 tbsp fresh chopped tarragon

1 In a thick-bottomed pan, seal the sausages until golden

brown all over, then remove from the pan and set aside.

2 In the same pan, add the smoked bacon, chorizo and

finely chopped vegetables and fry until golden brown (at

this point do not season with salt as this causes the lentils

to remain firm, meaning they will not break down to

thicken the casserole).

3 Add the puy lentils.

4 Add the sherry vinegar and de-glaze the pan.

5 Add the Madeira and red wine and simmer for three to

five minutes to cook off the alcohol.

6 Stir in the tomato puree, chicken stock and ale, and bring

to the boil.

7 Turn the heat down to a light simmer and allow to cook

for two and a half hours, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile,

roast the butternut squash, sage, garlic and thyme in the

butter and rapeseed oil until they are golden brown but

still firm.

8 After the lentil and stock mixture has simmered for the

full 90 minutes, add the sausages and cooked butternut

squash and continue to simmer for a further 30 minutes,

or until creamy and soft.

9 Finish with fresh chopped tarragon and a drizzle of

chorizo oil.

Belvoir Castle, in nearby Leicestershire

dates back to Norman times. Belvoir has

been the ancestral home of the Duke and

Duchess of Rutland for one thousand years

and is currently the family home of 11th

Duke and Duchess and their five children.

Belvoir, meaning 'beautiful view' in French is

pronounced as 'beaver' due to centuries of

the Anglo-Saxons inability to master the

french tongue! The castle offers the

contrast of the grandeur of the State Rooms

to the 'below stairs life' of the Old Kitchen

WALK THIS WAYDo as much or as little of the trail as you wish. There are lotsof things to see that can fire children’s imagination, makesketches of, with plenty of refreshment stops

“”

Page 33: Discover Rutland spring 2016

From it's beginnings as a market town in

1281, Uppingham has a noble and intriguing

past. If you're keen to explore the unusual,

and uncover the secrets of this medieval

town, there's no better way than to follow

the Uppingham Heritage Trail.

If you're visiting Uppingham for the

first time or simply want to get to know

this historic market town better, take

some time to follow the Uppingham

Heritage Trail website

(www.uppinghamheritagetrail.org.uk) or

pick up a printed copy from a variety of

shops in town. Your guided route of 20

different sites will allow you to time-travel

through a town whose customs and

traditions are still very much in evidence.

Your journey starts in the Market Place

which has been the social and commercial

centre since it received it's Market Charter in

1281. The Market Square still attracts

farmers from all over Rutland who exhibit

their prize livestock in the only annual

Fatstock show still to be held in temporary

penning in a traditional market town.

Victorian and Neo-Gothic architecture hide

the 16th Century coaching inn, The Falcon,

where horses and coaches would have

taken rest whilst their masters imbibed

inside. Cast your eye to the right of The

Falcon and, above the door of the

traditional family-run Ironmongers on the

corner, is a plough that has graced the

doorway since the mid-19th Century.

Still visible from the Market Square, is the

ancient Parish Church of St. Peter and St.

Paul. The majority of the Church was built in

the 14th Century but you can still see some

fine 12th Century carved figures that remain

either side of the North door. It's an

excellent place to seek a little calm

reflection and escape from the hustle and

bustle of 21st Century life.

Continuing on the Trail will bring you to the

buildings of the famous Uppingham School,

the alma mater of Rick Stein, John Suchet,

Stephen Fry & Rowan Atkinson, amongst

many other notable Old Uppinghamians.

The original buildings of this renowned

Public School were built during the reign of

Queen Elizabeth I, in 1584, and are one of

the 3 oldest buildings in Uppingham.

Life in Uppingham wasn't so privileged for

everyone though and you can still walk in

the footsteps of herdsmen from bygone

eras that would have moved cattle, geese

and sheep on their long journey to London,

before anyone had even imagined steam

locomotion! Their livestock would have

been kept overnight in the Uppingham

Pound and their route is the reason for the

aptly named Beast Hill.

Uppingham remained a prosperous, lively

market town, as evidenced by over 30

public houses in the 18th Century. Even

today there are plenty of places for you to

take in a local ale, a coffee with friends or a

relaxing meal with family. In 1894, the

billowing steam engines of Victorian

England had come to Uppingham. Sadly the

original railway buildings, in Station Road,

didn't survive the Beeching axe, when many

small local stations were closed.

Continuing with your walk into Norton

Street, you'll be interested to see the stone

in the Hall Gardens wall contains fossilised

remains of bivalves, brachiopods and

serpulids which are around 145 to 200

million years old and date back to the

Jurassic period. Keep a look out: The stone

used to build these walls can also be seen in

some of oldest buildings in town.

Everywhere you turn, there is a piece of

Uppingham history waiting to tell you it's

story. Even the recreation ground, Tod's

Piece, has an intriguing tale. Local legend

says that a man called Tod was a dab hand

with a scythe and, for a wager, took on the

monumental task of mowing the 7 acre field

single-handedly in one day! Labouring from

dawn to dusk he finally won his wager but,

having finished, dropped dead from

exhaustion!

Whilst this beautiful market town is smaller

than neighbouring Oakham, you'll enjoy

meandering past honey-coloured buildings

and breathing in the wealth of history mixed

sympathetically with 21st century life. With

it's traditional retailers, speciality shops, cosy

Inns and tea rooms you'll find there's plenty

of opportunity to discover Uppingham's

past and present glories!

(Former Mayor and Councillor) and Joanna

Sayers

Stamford: step back in history through this perfect English town – described as ‘the finest stone town in England ’ (according to Celia Fiennes, Sir Walter Scott and Sir John Betjeman) and the location for films and television dramas (Pride and Prejudice, Middlemarch).

Stamford offers not only fine examples of period architecture, ranging from remnants of medieval monasteries to fine 18th century town houses, but also a wealth of independent retailers, selling everything from crafts to food, placed throughout its historic streets and medieval lanes. When you need reviving, visit one of Stamford’s excellent cafes and restaurants or stay in one of our historic hotels. All this in the middle of the English countryside and only 75 min by train or 2 hours by car from central London.

Rutland Water nature Reserve, the

internationally famous nature reserve, is

managed by the Leicestershire & Rutland

Wildlife Trust in partnership with Anglian

Water and provides one of the most

important wildfowl sanctuaries in Great

Britain, regularly holding in excess of

25,000 waterfowl. The reserve covers 1,000

acres, with 9 miles (about 14.5km) of

shoreline. A number of activities are

available on the lake and there are some

good cycle routes to follow. You can even

bring the family dog for a walk, but on the

Lyndon side of the reserve, and they must

be kept on the lead. Nature lovers will be

amazed at the variety of wildlife to enjoy,

from the Ospreys, which can be seen in

spring and summer, to a large number of

waterfowl, such as tufted ducks and greylag

geese. There are also numerous butterflies,

dragonflies, and other insects, plus loads of

mammals, including otters, badgers and

water voles. We recommend that you make

the most of your visit by checking online

before you go.

GET oUT CyClInG In THE FRESH AIR!There is nothing better than a day out cycling with your

family, exploring the countryside and enjoying the fresh air

and it’s so easy to hire bikes from Rutland Cycling at Whitwell

or Normanton, or slightly further afield at Fineshade Wood or

Ferry Meadows. This year, Rutland have partnered with

popular local artist, Karen Neale, to produce new maps for

cyclists, with traffic-free routes that all the family can enjoy.

Cycling in Rutland is a great way to spend a family day out,

enjoying the peaceful waterside trails, taking in the stunning

scenery and stopping for a picnic en-route. To keep your

children entertained while they pedal, you can pick up a free

activity sheet at Rutland Water, or purchase the popular Stick

Man Activity Pack at Fineshade Wood, which includes a copy

of the Stick Man book. At Rutland Water, you can also enjoy

the sandy beach, mini golf and Bugtopia zoo – and if you still

have energy left after cycling around the lake, you could

head over to the Rockblok and have a go at abseiling or test

your agility and balance on the high ropes.

Family-run Rutland Cycling has been hiring bikes since 1981

– in fact, the company has hired over one million cycles over

the years, so you know you are in safe hands. With stores

located at Rutland Water, Fineshade Wood, Grafham Water,

Peterborough and Cambridge, Rutland offers the widest

choice of hire bikes in Europe: their range includes adult

mountain bikes, comfy cruiser bikes, tandems, electric bikes,

ToP oF THE MIlE“Anybody up for a cycle this week”, the WhatsApp messages

start near the end of the week for our cycling group. The

messages vary from banter to the usual weather report.

Inevitably the weekend RV is set at the Top Of The Mile

(TOTM) for a time to suite everybody. Top Of The Mile is

where the dead straight mile west out of Barrowden meets

the main road to Harringworth. It’s convenient for everybody

in our group living in local villages and has the added scenic

benefit of overlooking the Welland valley and the spectacular

Harringworth viaduct.

Our ride this morning heads west from TOTM and soon turns

up the road towards Seaton, a nice leg-warming hill to get

things started. Heart rate up we turn right towards Wing,

stopping to cross the A47 at Glaston and heading into Wing

past the famous medieval maze. We exit Wing down the hill

towards Preston with James Carter taking the lead, his forte

being fast downhills!! Over the A6003, a quick left right

through Preston and out towards Ridlington. It’s a nice

winter’s day with a slight westerly wind so the going suddenly

gets a bit tough into the wind. Nick Jones is now leading the

way and we unconsciously tuck into his slipstream to ease

the pressure. We have all cycled together for 5 years now,

starting with our first challenge of Lands’ end to John O’

Groats raising money for a classroom build at St Mary and St

John Primary school, we set ourselves a new challenge

annually. In 2015 we challenged ourselves to cycle for a

week out of a villa in Italy! After this length of time cycling

together we naturally fall into line, trusting each other to ride

inches apart.

Cycling in Rutland

Page 50: Discover Rutland spring 2016

We breeze past Ridlington and are soon

into the hills towards Braunston. Gel boy

Joe Austin is now in the lead and the

pace now gets frenetic. The rest of us

hang in there knowing from experience it

won’t last long and normal pace will soon

resume!! Right turn up to Knossington

and the road is rolling up and down

hillocks, great going around this area with

hardly any traffic. A quick zig zag through

Knossington and onto Owston. A lead

swap leaves Jimbo at the front, he is

probably the fittest of us all but sets a

steady considered pace, his life decree.

Up the hill and through Oweston, only a

couple of miles to our coffee stop and

we can just about smell the aroma and

taste the bacon sarnies. A right onto the

Oakham road followed shortly by left

onto the Launde/Tugby road. Our route

skirts just west of the lovely Launde

Abbey, directly over the next ridgeline

and to our stop at Café Ventoux with 19

miles completed. First opened in July

2015 Café Ventoux is turning into a

cyclist’s mecca with a warm welcome

and great coffee and sustenance for the

weary legs.

Body replenished we head up and over

the A47 again onto the Hallaton road via

the Crackbottle road. We stretch out our

legs now as its pretty much downhill

from here to home. A following wind

soon helps us push past Hallaton and

then through Medbourne, Drayton and

Great Easton. A short 500 metres on the

main A6003 has us turning right onto

the Lyddington road and we follow the

Welland Valley towards Barrowden via

Thorpe by water, under the

Harringworth viaduct and back to our

TOTM meeting point. The ride was 35

miles and we climbed 3000ft through

some spectacular Rutland scenery with

very little traffic. For those wanting a

more leisurely ride there are many

watering holes and eateries along the

route (see map overage) Perfect

cycling country!!

Two of the Rutland Lodges and Mill

Cottage at Greetham Valley have

VisitBritain’s Cyclists Welcome awards,

featuring storage and wash down

facilities; there are cycle routes

throughout Rutland to suit everyone,

whether a serious cyclist or purely for

pleasure. The cycle friendly tracks

around the perimeter of Rutland Water

are particular popular, with incredible

views. Rutland’s country lanes wind

through quiet, pretty villages, with

plenty of watering holes along the way

for refreshments.

As any cyclist will tell you, few things are

more satisfying than a fantastic meal

after a good bike ride down beautiful

country lanes. The new olive Branch

website allows fans of pedal power to

access six brilliant Rutland routes (and

growing) that go past the pub. Simply

go to www.theolivebranchpub.com,

scroll down and look for the 'Ride With

GPS' logo. Clicking on it takes you to a

page where you can load the routes

onto a GPS phone app or a Garmin-

type device. There's also a Strava logo

on pub website, which links to 'The

Olive Branch Pub' Cycling Pub.
