ENKANINI RESIDENTS PROTEST: About 60 residents from the Enkanini informal settlement held an illegal protest march intown last week Thursday. The protesters were planning to march to the municipal building in Plein Street to demand electricity. The protesters marched down Bird Street where they were stopped in front of the Eikestad Mall by the police and municipallaw enforcement officers. The police only allowed four of the proptesters to approach the municipal building. The rest of thegroup tried to reach the municipality later by marching down Andringa Street through the mall’s parking lot. There they were, however, stopped by the police again. PHOTO’S: SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

The four Enkanini residents that were allowed entrance to the municipality during the march last week Thursday, met withthe council speaker, Cyril Joosteand raised their main concern – the provision of electricity in the settlement - once again.According to the municipal spokesperson, Vernon Bowers, the Stellenbosch Municipality launched an enumerator study inAugust 2012 already to determine how many households there are in Enkanini and what exactly the scope of their needsis with regards to electricity and basic services. According to Bowers, Enkanini residents will also benefit from the municipalityand the Stellenbosch University’s High Tech Shack Project.

Keep stress undercontrol during exams

With the end of the year exams around thecorner, youmayalready feel the pressure.

“Don’t let the looming exams turn you intoa nervous wreck. Take a deep breath and fol-low these tips to get you through,” says Mo-nique Harrisberg, CEO of The Stress Clinic– an affiliation of The Voice Clinic (Johannes-burg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban).

Remember cramming, an exam trade mark,is not going to do your brain or nerves anyfavours.

“That’swhyitmakessense tostartplanningfor your exams as soon as you receive yourexam timetable,” says Dr Judy Jaye, trainingdevelopment manager at The Stress Clinic.

Determine the amount of work you have tocover, the time that it may take you to do soand set up a study schedule.

Your best bet is to set four weeks aside forstudying and two weeks for revision. This willgive you ample time to internalise your studymaterial and ask for help with difficult sub-jects or topics. Divide your study material foreach subject into bite-sized chunks and allo-cate them to specific hours or days on yourschedule.

Plan your time, draw up a realistic scheduleand stick to it. Include some relaxation as it

is not healthy to have your nose in your booksall the time. Break up your time with shortbreaks.

Avoid alcohol or recreational drugs. It is notthe way to deal with your stress right now. Also try not to drink too much coffee, becausethe caffeine won’t help you to concentrate.

Revise methodically. Simply reading longswathes of text is not going to help you remem-ber facts and figures. Write out importantdates, facts or passages, use lots of colouredpens and underline key phrases.

Test yourself or get someone to test you onyour notes, because regular testing meansthat you remember facts better and any gapsin your knowledge can be picked up in goodtime. Stick post its with key facts and phrasesaround your room. After a while these factswill sink in.

Ignore your friends, but not entirely ofcourse. Don’t use them as a benchmark.

There is a great source of support availableall you have to do is ask. Ask a teacher if youdon’t understand a particular topic or thereis always your mom and dad or siblings.

Remember exercise is a great way to giveyourself a break and to max out your concen-tration span. A 15-minute jog or a brisk walkis all you have to do.

Stellenbosch Hospice is an organisationservicing over 1 000 patients monthly.

The vast majority of their patients are seenin the privacy of their homes since they main-

ly live in rural communities and trekking totheir closest clinic facility is usually done byfoot.

The organisation services patients in everycorner of Stellenbosch, but sadly a large ma-jority of their patients are still living in ex-tremely poor socio-economic conditions in-cluding unemployment, overcrowding, gangwarfare, gender violence and malnutrition.

Giving pupils a business boostFlying Kites, in conjunction with the Stel-lenbosch Municipality, is launching an in-novativeprojectatKayamandiHighSchoolto develop entrepreneurial skills.

Focusing on grade 10 pupils, the project willbebasedontheaccreditedEntrepreneursLead-ership Programme developed by Flying Kites.

“The reality of the world that many of theselearners will be entering when they finishschool is that therearen’t enoughjobs.Weneedto start developing people’s ability to createjobs,”saysNicDupperofFlyingKites, whowillbe running the programme.

“The model we are working on is to developin the pupils the ability to start small business-es at school and in their communities. Oncethese are successful, we will look to developa market day concept at the school that willsee other pupils and members of the communi-ty getting involved and developing more smallbusiness ideas and opportunities.

“Ideally the school then becomes a hub forthe development of entrepreneurship andSMEs [small and medium enterprises] in thecommunity.”

Widmark Moses of the Stellenbosch Munici-

pality’s Local Economic Development Depart-ment, which has been instrumental in assist-ing the rollout of the programme, believes theproject will go a long way in giving pupils bothunderstanding and practical experience of thepotential that entrepreneurship offers, as wellas how important it is for the future of manyyoung South Africans.

The programme will concentrate on keybusiness behaviours that make up an entrepre-neurial mindset, and then develop essentialbusiness skills to give the pupils the ability toidentify an opportunity and turn it into a realand sustainable business venture.

And Victoria Hani, deputy principle of Kaya-mandi High School, is tremendously excited atthe potential the programme holds for theyoung minds in her care.

“We are all very grateful to the generoussponsorship of the JDI group and PSG AssetManagement for having the belief and confi-dence in the youth of our country to create thislife-changing opportunity for them,” a spokes-person says.

If you’d like any more information on thisand other Flying Kites programmes, contactNic Dupper at 2 [email protected].

Court swings foster grant axeNICOLE MCCAIN

TheSouthGautengHighCourtruled inAugustthat orphaned children in the custody of familywho have a “legal obligation” to care for themmay not be eligible for foster care grants.

Because they are considered duty-bound tosupport the child, guardians such as grandpa-rents and siblings may be dealt a crushing fi-nancial blow by the ruling.

While the ruling only binds magistrates’courtsinGauteng, itcouldbeusedasareferenceby magistrates in the Western Cape. PaulaProudlock of the Children’s Institute at UCTsays the ruling should only affect foster parentsof orphans, and that foster parents of childrenwho have been removed from their parents dueto abuse or neglect, will still be eligible.

Shivani Wahab, spokesperson for the SouthAfrican Social Security Agency (SASSA) in theWestern Cape, says caregivers only qualify forfoster care grants if a court order gives thechild foster status. This is granted when thechild has been orphaned or abandoned and hasno obvious means of support.

Caregivers can receive a child support grantor a foster care grant, but not both. Proudlocksays any primary caregiver can get a child sup-port grant, but foster parents have to beappointed by the court.

Wahab says 20 000 foster care grants and82 000 child support grants have been given outin the province. Proudlock says, nationally,350 000 orphans live with relatives who receivea foster care grant. The majority of these rela-tives are grandparents, Proudlock adds.

Trix Marais, acting national executive direc-tor of Child Welfare SA, declined to commentas the matter is under consideration by the na-tional Department of Social Development.

Proudlock says, “The likely effect of the judg-ment will be that when grandparents have tohave their foster care orders reviewed, theywill lose their foster child grants. They willthen have to rely on the lower child supportgrant. It will also mean that hundreds of thou-sands of orphans will no longer be eligible.”

Wahab says a child support grant amountsto R280 per month, while a foster child grantbrings in more than double, at R770.
