No SASSA, no payoutsSeveral elderly residents had to wait invain for their social grant pay-outs lastMonday after a mix-up occurred with thedates.According to Lindall Adams, almost 200

people sat outside the Stellenbosch townhall for hours waiting for their monthlycheque.“Thesepeople are ourgrandparents, the

sick, the elderly and those who have diffi-culties to walk. Everyone had been wait-ing from as early as 07:00 for the town halldoors to open at 08:00. Unfortunately thedoors stayed closed and these people wereunaware that theywould not receive theirsocial grant pay-out that day.“I phoned the Sassa (South African So-

cial Security Agency) offices and was toldthat the people will not receive their mon-ey that day and it was the wrong date.“Yet, some of the people told me that

Monday was the day for their pay-out.”Someof the elderly toldAdams that they

had come by taxis and trains, some fromthe farms and a couple of them were con-cerned on how they will get back.“Theywere reliant on thismoney toalso

take them home.”At 10:00 some of the people were still

standing around, hoping that someonewill come with their money.“Inmyopinionanychangeofdatesmust

by clearly communicated to the people toavoid days like this,” Adams said.According to Shivani Wahab, spokes-

personforSassa, thedatesaresetbya jointdecision by Sassa and Cash PaymasterServices (CPS), but confusion was causedafter a misprint.“Notification of the next pay-out dates

are printed on clients’ pay slips. CPS hadmisprinted pay dates and this resulted inconfusion amongst social grant recipi-ents.”There is also some confusion regarding

the re-registration for social grants for thecoming year.According to Wahab, Sassa Western

Cape is currently running printmedia ad-verts covering the re-registration processin all community-based Media24 newspa-pers.“Wehavealso securedradio slots to take

the message further.”

Rethink your hygieneIt is a well-researched and well-known factthat respiratory infections and diarrhoea aremajor causes of death among children underthe age of five. Each year, more than 3,5 million children

in the world don’t live to celebrate their fifthbirthday because of diarrhoea and pneumo-nia.Hands are the principal carriers of disease-

causing germs but, if widely practised, handwashing with soap could avert one million ofthose deaths.Over one million lives can be saved each

year by breaking the chain of infection andthis can be done by simply washing yourhands with soap. It’s important to keep good hygiene

practices inmindwhile you’re preparing foodand entertaining family and friends.Claire Hooper, Unilever skin cleansing

marketing director in South Africa, says re-thinkingyourhygieneroutineistherightwayto start. “Most people around the globe prac-tise some form of daily washing their hands, which serves two purposes, namely gettinghands clean by removing smells, visible dirtor the feel of dirtiness; andmaking hands safeandhygienic by removingmicroscopic patho-gens that can cause illness.“However, what worked years ago may not

be good enough for you and your family now.In this hectic ever-changing world of ours, there is one thing you can be certain of: noth-ing stays the same. Life doesn’t stand still andnor do the germs that inhabit ourworld. Theyare as fast-moving and unpredictable as therest of our lives, and theway theyareevolvingcauses some concern.”

It seemsasweget stronger, fitter and smart-er, so do bugs. They’re evolving in two ways: building re-

sistance to drugs, treatment and the environ-ment (according to theFood andDrugAdmin-istration, the human influenza virus can sur-vive on surfaces for 2-8 hours, and in 10 yearsthat could rise to 10 hours ormore) and trans-mitting from animals to humans (we all re-member the swine flu andbird flu outbreaks).Look at your own health to see how germs

are evolving. Colds that used to last two orthree days now drag on for weeks and whatused to be a minor tummy upset, often be-comes a case of serious gastroenteritis. Newgerms are evolving and they’re getting tough-er to fight.Washing your hands with soap is an effec-

tive intervention and washing with soap atcritical times (before handling food and afterusing the toilet) remains low, ranging fromzero to 34 per cent.Using soap is important as soap is effective

at cleansing and removing germs. Soap helpsto dislodge and loosen dirt and germs on thehands, so that it is rinsed away. This helps to prevent flu, acute respiratory

infection, diarrhoea, enteric fever, sorethroat, body odour, heat rash, spots, dysen-tery and ear infection.Personal hygiene goes a long way in pre-

venting illnesses. With various germs surviv-ing on your hands for anywhere between 90minutes and three hours, it’s important towash hands regularly. This includes beforeeating and preparing food, after using the toi-let and after sneezing, blowing your nose andcoughing.

Washing your hands with soap helps fight illnesses.

Longridge links upwith LaureusLongridgewine estate, located justof the R44 outside Stellenbosch, re-centlyhad the opportunity to servetheir wines exclusively to some ofthe country’s top sports personali-tiesduringtherecenttenyearanni-versary celebration of the LaureusFoundation South Africa.

The function, held at the Sports Sci-ence Institute, marked tenyears of thefoundation’s existence in the countryas well as the graduation of the firstYES (Youth Empowerment throughSports) team leaders. Attended by dig-nitaries such as Laureus chairmanand former Springbok player andteam manager Morne du Plessis, mas-ter of ceremonies and presenter JohnRobbie, academy member and adven-turerMikeHornandahost ofLaureusambassadors, the event celebrated thepowerful change that sport can bringto the world.

Amongst the ambassadors were Proteacaptain Shaun Pollock, swimmer NatalieduToit,SpringboksSchalkBurgerandBry-an Habana as well as extreme athlete RyanSandes, Bafana Bafana captain LucasRadebe and boxer Bay Jake Matlala.

The audience was inspired by motiva-tional speeches by Mike Horn, who is wide-ly considered one of the world’s greatestmodern adventurer-explorers and Paral-ympic swimmerAchmatHassiem.Hornre-iterated the message behind Laureus byemphasising thathopeandskills cancreatesignificant change. “You don’t have to bea champion to be the best, just be the bestthatyoucanbe.Nothingis impossible–pos-sible is you and me.”

According to Longridge winemaker Jas-

per Raats, this was an exceptional cause tosupport. “Wefirmlybelieve inbecoming in-volved with campaigns that empower com-munities and definitely support the ethosbehind theLaureusFoundation. We’ve hadfirst-hand opportunity to see the differencesport can affect in a community when weestablished the Longridge United soccerteam in 2007. The team consists ofLongridge staff and members from the sur-rounding communities and belongs to theStellenboschSoccerLeague.Theyhaveper-formed consistently well and had an excep-tional year by finishing at the top of the re-gion’s premier league.
