Maintain securitySpringhas sprung! Not only is theweather warmer but the count-downtosummerand theyear-endholidays have begun.“After a wet and windy winter,

ensuring that the home securitysystem works properly is an im-portant part of home mainte-nance,” says Rob Dale, managingdirector of ADT Security in theWestern Cape.“With the warmer weather on

thecardspeopleare likelyto leavetheir homes unattendedmore fre-quently to spend time outdoors. It is vital that their property

and belongings are protectedwhile they are away.”Dale says that the alarmsystem

andotherhardware– suchaspan-ic buttons and infra-red detectors– must be tested regularly.“This test is of the utmost im-

portance. If thesystemisnot func-tioning properly it may mean thealarm activation signal may notreach the security company whowill not know that there is anemergency and that assistance isneeded. It can be done togetherwith the

security service provider. If any-thing out of the ordinary is noted,a technician can be dispatched toaddress the problem.”Over time home security needs

can change. Dale says now is alsoa good time for residents to re-as-sess their overall security needs.“Thiscanbedoneduringawalk

Again, a security service pro-vider can offer advice if there isany uncertainty on how to identi-fy security needs.”In conclusion, Dale adds that it

is also critical that the securityservice provider has the most up-to-datekey-holdercontactdetails.“Residents must ensure that

their security provider has thecurrent contact details of theirprimary and secondary key-hold-ers.Inthisway, theycanbeimmedi-

Get ready for the FatimaFestival early next monthThe annual Fatima Festival was started bythe then large Portuguese community ofStellenbosch in 1987.

Since then it has grown into not only oneof the major annual events on the Stellen-bosch social calendar, but has spreadthroughout the Western Cape, where it iscelebrated at a number of venues aroundCape Town.

It takes place in early October, one weekbefore another big event, the annual Bless-ing of the Fishing Fleet ceremonies in CapeTown.

This year the Fatima Festival in Stellen-bosch will be taking place over the weekendof 18 and 19 October 2014.

Though still keeping a strong Portugueseflavour and with (literally) busloads of Por-

tuguese fans coming from other parts ofWestern Province, the festival in Stellen-bosch is no longer confined to the Portu-guese and embraces all our communities.

Thus, communities in Kayamandi, Cloet-esville and Idas Valley have also been doingsterling work to raise funds for the organi-sation of this year’s Fatima Festival.

The festival is organised by St Nicholas’Catholic Church.

The Fatima Festival has a religiousgrounding and a street parade on the Sun-day morning from 11:00, but from then on,and the night before, it is all fun, fun andfood – washed down with some beer or wineand dancing for the whole family.

Hiring and firingAppointing people to work inyour business is one of themore challenging aspects ofhaving your own business.

Often one is pressed for timewhen you need to make an ap-pointment and therefore easilyappoint someone who is availa-ble and not necessarily the bestperson for the job.

Jim Collins in Good to Greatsays “Get the right people on thebus and the wrong people off the bus”. Soit is wise to consider the advice in Proverbs26:10: “An employer who hires any fool thatcomes along is only hurting everybody con-cerned.”

The next important aspect is to get theright people in the right seats. This meansthat a person’s personality and abilitiesmust match the work that is expected ofhim/her to do.

Tao Tao, co-founder ofGetYourGuide.comconsiders it important to hire for, as he putsit, the “fantastic four”: integrity, motiva-tion, skill and culture fit.

Integrity or character is very importantwhen hiring. We usually consider skill orcompetence as most important, but whenwe need to fire someone, it is often for flawsin character.

A person whose personalitymatches the job that he/she hasto do is also more motivated thanpeople who do not like what theyaredoing.Soonceagain therightperson in the right job is very im-portant.

Every organisation has aunique culture that developsover time, and new appoint-ments that do not fit the cultureoftenleadtodisharmonyinapre-viously pleasant working envi-

ronment. On the other hand be careful to not only

have staff that always agree 100% on every-thing. That is called “groupthink” and canbe equally harmful to an organisation.

Present day labour laws make it difficultto lay off rebellious or unproductive work-ers. Therefore it of utmost importance foremployers to ensure that they make the bestpossible appointments.

Employers should acquaint themselveswith the details of the Labour Law in orderto act accordingly.

Today’s business owner needs the neces-sary know-how and should have a policy inplace for hiring and firing. Without it yourbusiness becomes vulnerable.

How to treat bleeding gumsMost South Africans experience bleedinggums on occasion, but when is it a cause forconcern? According to Dirna Grobbelaar, oral hygiene advisor for IVOhealth, bleedinggums is never normal. “Unless there has beenan accidental injury – such as from brushingtoo hard or burning your mouth with a hotdrink – bleeding gums are an indication thatsomething is not right.”

Grobbelaar says gum disease is not the onlycause. “The Pill, blood-thinning medicationsuch as Disprin or Warfarin, bleeding disor-ders, liver disease, mouth ulcers, cancer, hor-monal changes during pregnancy, vitamindeficiencies and dental caries, can all causebleeding gums.”

However, gum disease is the most commonreason. “When plaque and tartar is left on theteeth, the bacteria present irritate the gums, causing an immune response. The body sendsblood to the affected gums which then maybleed when brushing, flossing or even eat-ing.”

Fortunately, with proper oral care gum dis-ease is reversible. If left untreated, it can de-velop into periodontitis, an irreversible con-dition when the gum, bone and ligaments sur-rounding the tooth become damaged and canlead to tooth loss.

) To remedy bleeding gums Grobbelaar

recommends a visit to the dentist or oral hy-gienist as soon as possible to enable them toprofessionally diagnose the cause and sug-gest the most effective treatment options.

) Grobbelaar says a meticulous oral hy-giene routine is essential to treat gum diseaseand prevent it from recurring.

“Brush correctly at least twice a day to keepteeth as clean as possible. Use a soft brushand don’t be tempted to brush hard – this willjust further damage the gums.”

) Cleaning in between the teeth needs tobe a daily habit. “If your gums bleed whenyou floss you have gum disease or you aredoing it wrong,” says Grobbelaar. “If you findflossing awkward or uncomfortable look forSunstar GUM interdental products – there isa huge range of tools from floss brushes, flosshandles to tiny Soft-Picks. These days therereally is an interdental tool for everyone.”

) Rinsing is important, particularly if youhave bleeding or sensitive gums. “Rinse regu-larly using a lukewarm salt and bicarbonateof soda rinse or Sunstar GUM Paroex treat-ment mouthrinse which has anti-bacterialproperties,” says Grobbelaar. For more oral care advice visit www.face-

book.com/ivohealth or ask Dirna Grobbelaaryour oral care questions on www.ivo-health.co.za.
