Learners bowled over by lifelessons at recent outingNEIL FORTUIN

A ten-pin bowling excursion hashelped a group of Grade 11 pupilsunderstand that, no matter whattheir background, how their livesplay out will be based purely onthe choices they make.

The trip to GrandWest Entertain-ment World in Cape Town was thefirst time that the seven studentsfrom Vlottenburg, who attend Stel-lenzicht Senior Secondary School inJamestown, had played the sport. They found it even more difficult

when the sides of each of their bowl-ing lanes were raised to expose thegutters along their length. Previous-ly, the sides had at least kept thebowling balls in their lane, makingthe pupils more likely to hit a fewpins.Once they were lowered though,

the balls no longer had anything tokeep them on the right track and sothe success rate plummeted.Because the students found this

situation frustrating and were in-clined to give up, their group leadersat them down and presented themwith an analogy to put things intocontext. As their leader Neil Fortuin ex-

plained, the sides of the lanes, whenup, represent the influenceof thestu-dents’ families and wider communi-ty. This influence, when positive, helps themtostayonthestraightandnarrowandgivesthemthenecessaryguidance to succeed. When the sides of the lanes are

down, however, it means that eitherthe community was not providingthe required support or its influencewas negative. In all cases, however, it was up to

each individual to make their ownchoices and take responsibility fortheir own actions, because the finaloutcome would be decided by suchdecisions.Fortuinwasbroughtup ina family

that he felt did not love or care forhimandhe ended up looking outsidethehome for validation. After falling

inwith a gangster, who gave him theacceptance and approval that hecraved, he ended up being in and outof prison on drug abuse charges, be-fore committing murder. This message was reinforced by a

motivational speaker, who on themorning before the Vision 11erswent on their trip, spoke about hislife andhowhehad turned it around. When his life came crashing down

around his ears, he decided it wastime to make change. So the motivational speaker ac-

quired an education for himself andhas now turned his life around. Heis happily married, has a well-paidjob and owns a house and car.As a result, his key message to the

pupils was that, although family andthe community may have a big im-pact on an individual’s outlook, thelife that they ultimately end up withwill be based onno one else’s choicesbut their own.For more information about the

Keep your businesssafe against burglariesThe security and safety of com-mercial properties and tenants isoften threatened by burglaries. In fact the recent crime statis-

tics noted that commercial prop-erty break-ins were definitely onthe increase, according to ChubbFire and Security.Chubb has listed a number of

cost effective suggestions on howbusiness owners can prevent andminimisecommercialburglaries.

Keeping your building safefrom intrusion:

) All shrubs and trees in andaround the premises should bewell trimmedandallunnecessarydebris should be removed. Theseact as good hiding places forcriminals trying to gain access tothe building.

) Security signage is an effec-tive deterrent against burglary atyour business. Make sure allsignage is prominently displayedaround the building to deter bur-glars.

Make sure you have ade-quate lighting:

) Leave a few interior lights onduring the evening and week-ends. This will give the impres-sion that thebuilding is occupied.Installing a day and night switchwill reduce electricity consump-tion.

) Ensure the exterior of thepremises is well lit, especiallyduring weekends.

) Install motion sensor light-

ing in strategic places to help de-ter break-ins at the premises.

Secure the roof against bur-glars:

) Ensure access to the roof isminimisedby trimming trees andremoving ladders, shelving orcrates that can be used to accessthe roof.

) Invest in internal and/or ex-ternal roof sensors to help detectany illegal entry via the roof. These are easily installed and cancost effectively be added to yourexisting alarm system.

) Ensure roof openings, in-cluding skylights and mantrapdoors on the roof, are properly se-cured and protected by an alarmsensor

Other preventative actionsto ensure the safety of yourbusiness:

) Photographandrecordserialnumbers of all computer equip-ment and ensure your companyname is clearly marked on eachitem.

) Implement an action plan inthe event of a robbery or fire.

) Conduct a fire drill at leastonce a quarter.

) Changesecurityaccesscodesin the event of staff changes.Advise the security provider’s

monitoring centre of anynewandupdated information, such asopening and closing times or per-sonnel permitted on the premisesafter hours.

Don’t leave items in carBe careful not to leave valuableitems,housekeysandimportantdoc-uments in your vehicle, warned1st for Women Insurance, to avoidbecoming a target of theft out of yourmotor vehicle.According to Robyn Farrell, man-

aging director of 1st for Women In-surance: “Items that are typicallystolen from vehicles are usuallysmall, easy to hide, and easy to sell-off or pawn. Goods that 1st for Wom-en’s customers commonly report be-ing stolen from their cars includelaptops, iPads, cellphones, hand-bags, clothes, sun glasses and shop-pingbags filledwithnewly-boughtoryet-to-be-unpacked items. However,it is not uncommon to receive claimsforlargeritemssuchasgolfclubsandcar sound speakers.”Jamming vehicle remotes is be-

coming a more commonly-usedmodus operandi. However, Farrellsaid there are still many incidents ofthieves simply smashingwindows tobreak in. A lot of incidents occurwhile vehicles are parked at shop-ping centres and even hospital orgym parking lots“Our claims data suggests the

same thing as the recent SAPS crimestatistics, theft out of motor vehiclesis a common crime and incidence isrising. And, it’s costing car-ownersand insurance companies a lot ofmoney.“The ‘remote jamming’ scam is in-

creasingly being used by criminalswho watch their targets as they lockandleavetheirvehicles, andthenuseother remotes to interfere with thecar-owners’ remote frequencies, pre-venting them from locking the cars.Thisputsvictims ina trickypositionwhen it comes to proving to their in-surers thata theft actually tookplacebecause there are no signs of forcedentry. Still, for the most part thievesstill break into cars using force, andsmash-and-grabs remain a symptomof our times.“The onlyway to prevent your val-

uables from being stolen out of your

car is to avoid leaving them in it. Ofcourse, it isn’t always possible toavoid carrying items of value in ourcars. However, we can take care toonly carry what is necessary, keep-ing it hidden from view, and then re-membering to remove valuables onarriving at our destinations,” saidFarrell.Farrell said many car-owners

leave their house or office keys intheir cars, which are also known tobe stolen during vehicle break-ins.“Don’t leave in your car any keys

or documentation that could lead acriminal to your home, or offer theminsight into your identity or habits. This includes utility bills and bankstatements. It is just asking for trou-ble,” she cautioned. She concludes with this advice:) Alwaysmake sure that your im-

portantpossessionsaresafely lockedaway in the boot when you are driv-ing.

) Never leave items of interest ly-ing in full view on car seats whiledriving or when leaving your carparked.

) Park your car in a secure park-ing lot where there are lots of othervehicles and ideally, security per-sonnel.

) Lock your carwhen driving andwhen leaving it parked. When usinga remote, double check that your carhas in fact been successfully-locked.

) Empty your car at the end ofeach day to avoid it becoming clut-tered with items that you don’t wantstolen.

) Never leave house keys or im-portant papers in your car.

) Don’t leave car registration pa-pers in your car.

) Install an alarm system on yourvehicle.

) Install window safety film.) Ensure that you have adequate

Open Mic jazz draws to a closeTheQuarterFinals for theGrand-West Open Mic Jazz singing con-test have been held everyWednesday since 9 October 2013and, from 23 October, moves toHanoverStreet for the semi finalsand finals on 30 October.Over the past five years, the

GrandWest Open Mic Jazz sing-ing contest has attracted an in-credible range of undiscoveredtalent.Entrants of all ages, acrossall communities, from all walksof life have wowed the audiencewith not only their vocal range, but their personal stories too.One such story is that of police-

man and quarter finalist JeanCarlo Ongansie from Bracken-fell.Jeancomes fromamusical fam-

ily and has always wanted to bea singer. As a child he learnt to play the

violin, but due to financial con-straints had to stop his lessons. When he was 15 years old, hismother inspired him to play theclassical guitar.Just for fun, Jean got an idiot’s

guide to the guitar from his locallibrary, and taught himself toplay the acoustic guitar as well.Besides having a natural talent

for playingmusical instruments,Jean has always enjoyed singingand spends many hours listeningto the greats and learning fromthem at the same time.On leaving school, Jean joined

the South African Police Serviceand after initially working as aninvestigating officer, is now a so-cial crime prevention officer. Al-thoughheworks in a stressful en-vironment, his music happilyprovides him with a relaxing es-cape.

Make sure your medical aid caters for yourchanging needsIt is the last quarter of2013andallthemedicalaid schemes start re-leasing their benefit in-creases for 2014.

It is time to re-assessyour medical aid and de-cide whether the benefitstructure of your currentscheme is adequate tocover your needs in 2014.PeterJordan,principal

officerofFedhealthMedi-calScheme, says that eve-ry year each membershould assess their cur-rent health care needsbasedon theirage, familycomposition and healthstatus and select an ap-propriate option whichwill cater for this level ofneed.“A member selecting

anoptionbasedonafford-ability rather thanhealthcare needs shouldbe fully aware of the riskof having to cover certainhealthcare costs out oftheir own pockets.“Members on inappro-

priate options oftenblame the scheme forwhat they perceive to be inferiorbenefits rather than acknowledg-ing that the scheme is only provid-ing benefits that match their level

of monthly contributions,” saidJordan.Jordan cautions members

against falling into the trap of se-

lecting the cheapest optionavailable without under-standing the resultant lossin benefits.“Members should com-

pare rates and benefits ofdifferent schemes and lookat rate increases over thelast couple of years. Onemust, however, rememberthat price should never bethe only key determinantas service levels are, if notmore, as important.“It is important to lookat

service in terms of howclaims are paid as well asthe communication inplace to allow members tokeep on track of claimsprocessing.A superior callcentre as well as dedicatedclient liaison officers forcompaniestomeetwithcli-ents and resolve memberproblems on site, are es-sential.”When analysing differ-

ent scheme options, Jor-dan says intermediariescan play a vital education-al role in assisting mem-bers to not only make thecorrect choices, but tomanage their medical

scheme expenses more effectively.“When discussing options with

their medical aid expert, membersshould confirm the financial stabil-

ity of the scheme they are consider-ing including the credit rating andsolvency. All schemes are requiredby law to maintain reserves of atleast 25% of total contributions.Global Credit Rating (GCR) is alsoa good indicator of any scheme’sclaim paying ability and ratings ofAAandAA-areconsideredaccepta-ble.”Understanding the level of cover

you will receive is another impor-tant aspect to take into considera-tion.“Members need to check and un-

derstand the reimbursement rateswhen it comes to specialist rates.”It is also important to checkbene-

fit limits on certain options to en-sure appropriate cover, he adds.Jordan urges members to ensure

they understand what claims getpaid from what benefits.“Members need to understand

wheremoney is drawn from, for ex-ample: does the scheme pay for cer-tain out-of-hospital benefits fromrisk or only savings?“They also need to ensure they

make themost of their benefits. Forexample ifmembers have a chroniccondition they should be applyingfor chronic medicine authorisa-tion, otherwise it will be paid forfrom their day-to-day benefit.”In addition Jordan advises mem-

bers to ensure they understand thepre-exclusionclauseandhowitwillimpact on them.

He explains that while medicalschemes are not allowed to excludeany pre-existing conditions, theycan impose a waiting period of upto 12 months on all claims relatedto a specific condition.“Current legislation hinges on

whether you have had more than a90-day break in cover between yourprevious scheme and the schemeyou are now applying to join. If youhave a break in excess of 90 days, then the scheme can apply a threemonth general waiting period aswell as up to 12-month pre-existingcondition specific exclusion whichcan also be applied to PMB condi-tions.“If there is less than a 90-day

break in cover then full inter-changeability applies.”Shouldamemberhavemore than

twoyearscontinuouscover,Jordansays the scheme can only apply athree month general waiting peri-od.However, if the member has less

than two years continuous cover, the scheme can apply up to 12months pre-existing condition spe-cific exclusions.“A late joiner penalty is applied

to people who join amedical aid forthe first time after the age of 35. Itis another way of encouraging peo-ple to join the system earlier in lifeand to ensuremedical sustainabili-ty based on the fact that the youngand healthy subsidise the elderly.”

Peter Jordan, Principal Officer of Fedhealth Medical Scheme
