Faster housing deliveryrequires new optionsSHAWN VALENTINE

“It cannot be business as usual.”

Those were the words emphasised by Stellen-bosch mayor, Conrad Sidego, when he addressedthe public at a housing exhibition on Friday 22August in Cloetesville.

The Innovation Village open day saw alterna-tive housing structures, electricity and toilet sys-tems on display. This expo afforded the public anopportunity to interact with the representativesand to seehow thesedifferent options to the state-provided RDP houses can speed up and possiblyimprove the standard and quality of the currentgovernment-issued houses.

“Thepurposeis toexhibit theavailablealterna-

tives, and to receive feedback from the public re-garding these alternatives,” Christa Liebenberg, the Stellenbosch Municipal Manager said.

Liebenberg also explained that if the feedbackfrommembersof thepublicwhowereabletocom-ment on the structures, was positive, Stellen-bosch Municipality would be able to present thisdata to the national government, and possibly in-fluence the current housing policy.

Sidegourged thepublic to consider thealterna-tivepossibilities.Withalmost30 000peopleonthehousing list in Stellenbosch alone, and about 300houses being awarded to beneficiaries per year, the need for faster delivery is paramount.

“This requires us to rethink our strategy andtoimplementextraordinarymeasurestomeetthehousing need,” Sidego said.

Starting or buying a business?Starting your own business takesa lot of effort; you create some-thing that wasn’t there previous-ly. It is hard to break new ground, but if you can pull it off, it givesgreat satisfaction.

There are many things to attend towhen starting from scratch. Most im-portant is to create a structure for thebusiness. Part of creating a structureis to get suppliers for goods and serv-ices you need. So, if you are a manu-facturer; where would you buy rawmaterials? Who would service yourmachines? etc. In retail you needwholesale suppliers for thegoodsyouwant to resell, suppliers of shelving, etc. But in all businesses youneed ad-ministration and bookkeeping serv-ices and you need to determine whattime of the year or month to performcertain tasks.A friendofminehasabusiness thatsells fishing, swimming and divinggear in a coastal town. He says in Au-gust, when fewer people enter his

shop, he orders largequantities of stock tohave it availableduring the Decem-ber/January season.During that time hissuppliers close theirbusinesses and hecan’t restock untilthe end of January.Creating structureis often a matter oftrial and error andthe mistakes thatyou make during theprocess are good buthard lessons. That is why someopt forbuyingabusi-ness and so receivethe whole structure already in place, although youmay pay a pretty pennyfor it.Many a business that is for salemay be in some sort of financial trou-ble and to my mind highly over-priced. Therefore be cautious, should you consider buying instead

of starting a busi-ness.When you start abusiness fromscratch you growyourability toman-age the business asthe business grows. If you buy an exist-ing business andyou’ve never beenin business before, you may find thatyou lack the skillsto manage what isneeded. I’ve seeneducated peoplegetting into thedeep-end, buying orinheriting busi-

nesses, only to lose everything a yearor two later.Unfortunately you can’t buy theability to manage the business. Hereonly experience will do.
