Personalize your

Chinese astrology is based on the Lunar Calendar. One cycle of the Lunar

Calendar is 60 years - made up of the twelve animal signs and five element types of each animal sign. Thus 12 x 5 = 60 years. According to legend, twelve animals came to bid farewell to Amitabha Buddha when he ascended to Heaven. These animals in order of their arrival were the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, The Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Sheep, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog and the Boar. To commemorate their presence at his ascension to heaven, Lord Buddha assigned one year to each of the animals. Thus when Chinese meet, merely disclosing their animal year is sufficient for a fellow Chinese to know his/her age. The sixty year cycle comes about by combining the twelve animals with the five elements - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The twelve animals also correspond to different compass direction. Each of the animals has its own direction. The direction for each animal sign is shown in the image here.

Thus, if they are in conflict with each other, then they each experience unlucky periods during the years ruled by the sign that is in conflict with them.
