‘n Bekende sakesman van Louis Tri-chardt, mnr. Brian Jefferies (46), het ernstige beserings opgedoen in ‘n mo-torfi etsongeluk Sondagmiddag op die N1, naby die Songozwistraat-kruising.

“Die dokter het vir ons gesê hy het nog nooit in sy lewe sulke slegte breuke gesien nie,” het Brian se broer, Michael, Dins-dag aan die koerant gesê. Hy het vanuit Tzaneen gepraat waar hy vir Brian onder-steun het in die hospitaal. Hy en Brian ry al van jongs af motorfi ets en, sê Michael, Brian se motorfi ets was sy trots gewees.

Brian was Sondag met sy Triumph Tiger 800XC motorfi ets vanaf die Levu-

bu-pad se kant af op pad terug huistoe. Hy het by die N1-kruising stilgehou, en was besig om regs te draai toe hy bots met ‘n silwer BMW wat ‘n U-draai gemaak het op die N1. Die bestuurder van die BMW het berg se kant toe gekyk voor sy die U-draai gemaak het.

Mnr. Koos Botha, wat die ongeluk sien gebeur het, het vir Michael vertel dat hy nog Brian se motorfi ets bewonder het, toe hy die slag gehoor het. Hy het dadelik gestop om te help.

Albei Brian se gewrigte is verbrysel met die impak van die ongeluk. Brian het ook etlike meters anderkant die BMW te lande gekom.

genadiglik was Koos daar en hy het ‘n noodhulpkennis ... hy het kop gehou en nie Brian se helmet afgehaal nie, en deur die dorpswag gereël dat ‘n ambulans Brian vinnig hospitaal toe vat ... teen die tyd wat ek by die toneel gekom het, was Brian al op pad in die ambulans na die Zoutpansberg Privaat Hospitaal gewees,” het Michael gesê.

By die hospitaal is daar vasgestel dat die bloeding nie veroorsaak is deur ‘n hoofslagaar wat raakgesny is nie. Helaas was Brian se beserings baie ernstig – sy bekkenbeen was op drie plekke morsaf – en hy is gestabiliseer en na die Tzaneen MediClinic oorgeplaas per ambulans.

teater gehaas waar hy ‘n vier-en-‘n-half-uur operasie ondergaan het om die skade aan sy geb-reekte gewrigte en bekkenbeen te herstel. “Ons is dankbaar dat hy nie skade opgedoen het aan sy lewensnoodsaaklike organe nie,” het Michael gesê.

Brian se dokters kon reeds die meeste skade herstel deur middel van ysters en skroewe. Deurentyd was Michael aan sy broer se sy gewees.

Maandagoggend, kort nadat Brian uit die teater gekom het, was daar ‘n paar benoude oom-

blikke toe sy bloeddruk skielik gedaal het. Daar is oorweeg om hom oor te plaas na die inten-siewe sorgeenheid, maar voor dit nodig was, kon sy dokters Brian se bloeddruk weer regkry.

Teen Dinsdag het Brian se lang pad na herstel begin. “Die dokter sê daar is ‘n moontlikheid van nog opvolgoperasies, maar Brian moet nou eers gesond word,” sê Michael.

Intussen het boodskappe van ondersteuning en vinnige beter-skap vanaf alle oorde gekom vir Brian. Baie inwoners sal hom herken as die eienaar van die De Graaf UnderCar franchise in

Sakeman gelukkig om nog te lewe

Waternood was weereens ‘n nare werklikheid in Louis Trichardt die afgelope naweek en teen Maandag was inwoners al raadop. ‘n Leser het hierdie foto ingestuur waar mense die brandkraan op die hoek van Songozwi- en Burgerstraat oopgebreek het. Die watertoevoer na die dorp was tydelik afgesit, sodat daar noodsaaklike herstelwerk aan die Albasini pyplyn gedoen kon word. Die toevoer was teen Dinsdagmiddag weer herstel. Foto verskaf.

Daar bestaan genoeg twyfel in die bedrogsaak teen dr. Philip Arnoldus Venter (58) om hom onskuldig te bevind en die klagte teen hom te laat vaar.

Dit was die argument van Venter, ‘n leraar van Louis Trichardt, se advokaat, mnr. Neil Duvenhage, in die Louis Trichardt Distrikshof waar Venter teregstaan op ‘n klag van bedrog en oortredings van die Vuurwapenwet. Venter het Donderdag (7de) weer in die hof verskyn.

Daar is vooraf in die saak skriftelike betooghoof-de by die hof geliasseer, nadat die Staat sy saak reeds in Februarie vanjaar gesluit het. Venter word daarvan aangekla dat hy gedurende April 2006, onder valse voorwendsels, besit geneem het van drie van mev. Cecile Steyn van Louis Trichardt se oorlede man se vuurwapens. Hy sou haar glo onder die indruk gebring het dat hy ‘n geregistreerde wapenhandelaar was. Al drie wapens het intussen vermis geraak, met Venter wat aanvoer dat hy dit vir sy oorlede vriend, mnr. Tewie Wessels, gegee het om te deaktiveer. Ná Tewie se dood in 2009, het Venter egter in 2010 in twee briewe aan Steyn erken dat die wapens steeds in sy besit was, met die nodige bergingspermitte (SAPD 539-vorms).

Duvenhage het Donderdag repliek gelewer op Venter se betoogskrif deur aspekte aan die hof uit te lig waar daar moontlike twyfel in die Staat se getuienis bestaan. “U hoef nie te bevind of die beskuldigde [Venter] ‘n leuenaar is (nie). As u kan bevind op die getuienis voor u dat sy getuienis redelik moontlik waar mag wees, dan moet hy die voordeel van die twyfel kry ... ek wil met eerbied aan die hand doen, as u na die hele saak kyk, is daar twyfel,” het Duvenhage aan die hof gesê.

Duvenhage het volstaan by die stelling dat die plaaslike polisie se wapenlisensiekantoor in wanor-de was. Hy het ook gesê dat Steyn nooit getuig het dat Venter aan haar voorgestel het dat hy [Venter] die nodige magtiging het om besit te neem van die vuurwapens soos dit op die klagstaat aangedui word

nie. Verder het Duvenhage geargumenteer dat Steyn se getuienis nie moontlik waar kan wees nie, omdat sy getuig het dat Venter Turner’s Wa pen handelaars wou oorkoop en daarvan melding gemaak het in 2006 toe sy haar wapens aan hom oorhandig het. “Volgens die onbetwiste getuienis van Venter en sy vriend mnr. Peet Visser was Turner’s in daai dae nog nie ter sprake nie, so sy moet ‘n fout maak daar ... haar getuienis is dus nie heeltemal aanvaarbaar nie,” het Duvenhage gesê.

Verder het Duvenhage ook gesê dat Visser se getuienis - toe die wapens aan Wessels oorhandig is met die uitgereikte permitte - aanvaar moet word, omdat dit onder kruisondervraging van die Staat nie juis veel aangeval is nie. Hy argumenteer dat Visser, alhoewel hy nie die permitte van naderby ondersoek het nie, dit wel gesien het. “Hy het getuig dat hy die permitte en die wapens die betrokke dag gesien het ... die hof kan nie sy getuienis verwerp nie ... en as die hof tot daardie gevolgtrekking kom, dan moet die hof die beskuldigde [Venter] ontslaan, want dan is daar permitte vir die vuurwapens aangevra en kan daar derhalwe nie rede vir die bedrogklagte wees nie, ook gesien in die lig van Steyn se getuie-nis van Turner’s.” Ná Duvenhage se repliek is die saak uitgestel tot 21 Mei vir uitspraak deur die hof.

“Daar is genoeg twyfel vir ‘n onskuld-uitslag”

Die vergadering wat KANSA met inwoners van Louis Trichardt belê op 12 Mei om meer duidelikheid te gee oor hoe KANSA plaaslike donasies aanwend, is uitgestel.

Mnr. Dirk Meissenheimer, plaaslike Relay for Life-organiseerder, het gesê dat die woordvoerder van KANSA Polokwane, me. Adri Ras, wat inwo-ners sou kom toespreek, ‘n operasie aan haar skouer moes ondergaan. Die vergadering is dus uitgestel na 26 Mei om 18:00 in die plaaslike Baptiste Kerk.

Residents passed by, oblivious to the tragedy concealed under a dirty piece of newspaper next to the road on the corner of Jeppe- and Kort Street in Louis Trichardt on Tuesday morning.

Amidst a strong police presence and with the area having been cordoned off, the newspaper covered the cold and lifeless remains of a foetus from curious eyes. It was covered by a rescue worker shortly after the gruesome fi nd was re-ported to the police.

More gruesome was how the foetus came to its final resting place. According to infor-mation supplied to the newspaper, the foetus was discovered by a resident’s dog that was pa-trolling the open piece of veld and stream running along Kort Street. Sniffi ng about, the dog retrieved the foetus amongst heaps of rubbish dumped in the stream and, true to a dog’s nature, it dragged the foetus back to its home (behind the municipal testing grounds on the opposite corner). Upon no-ticing what it was, the horrifi ed dog owner notifi ed

the Makhado police.The baby, according to local police spokesper-

son Const Irene Radzilane, is estimated to have been between six and seven months old when it was aborted by its mother. She could not confi rm whether the baby had been buried alive, or how long the baby’s remains had been in the veld.

Further details will de-pend on a post-mortem examination and will establish the baby’s age and sex.

Upon th is news-paper’s arrival at the scene, the police’s dog unit was canvassing the scene and discovered the exact spot where

the baby had been dug up in the bushes. Blood, chewed-up plastic bags and a white bucket were found in the trench running through the fi eld. It is suspected that the mother had aborted the baby in the veld and just left it there.

Radzilane has confi rmed that a case of conceal-ment of birth has been opened. According to mem-bers of the local law fraternity, the charge could

be changed to murder if there is evidence that the baby was alive at the time of the birth. The police have urged the public to help them in locating the mother, and anyone with infor-mation can contact the station at 015 519 4300 or Radzilane at Tel 082 565 8233.

In the meantime, Past Leonie Mayfarth of the AFM Church here in Louis Trichardt has pleaded with young expectant mothers to rather seek help than turn to such extremes if the pregnancy was unplanned. She attended the crime scene, where she prayed for God’s intervention in the sit-uation. “What people forget is that it is usually

the mother who could see no other way ... and what the mother does not realize, is that there is a local institution she can reach out to for help,” said Mayfarth.

Any local church or clinic can be approached, who will in turn assist an expectant mot her. There is also an institution in Polokwane who can facilitate adoptions. Mayfarth has invited young mothers, who need help to contact her. She can be contacted at Tel. 084 219 4406. Alternatively, Capt Danelle Fourie of the local police’s family protection unit can be contacted at 082 729 0378 for assistance, information or a referral to a social worker.

Die polisie is op soek na die ver-dagtes wat vandeesweek miljoene rande se goud en koper die land probeer insmokkel het.

Amptenare van die Suid-Afri-kaanse Inkomste diens (SAID) het Maandag op die goud, ter waarde van sowat R24 miljoen, en 279 kg koper beslag gelê by die Beitbrug Grenspos.

“Die insittendes van ‘n Toyota Quantum bussie het weggejaag ty-dens ‘n inspeksie van die voertuig.

SAID-amptenare het die bussie agternagesit, en die bussie gejaag tot by Waterpoort, waar dit gelos is en die verdagtes op die vlug geslaan het,” het SAID-woordvoerder mnr. Luther Lebelo gesê.

Lebelo het bevestig dat die saak aan die polisie oorhandig is om verder te ondersoek.

Die goud en koper is ook na die polisie se laboratoriums gestuur vir analise.

Limpopo’s provincial heritage is under threat from poachers.

This is according to the Democratic Alliance (DA), following a question they had recently put to the provincial Department of Economic Devel-opment, Environment and Tourism (LEDET).

According to the information the LEDET supplied, said the DA this week in a press release, the conser-vation systems and safety measures in state-owned game reserves all over Limpopo are failing miserably.

There have been 418 known poach-ing cases, but only 113 successful arrests were made between 2012 and 2014. The parks that were hit hardest by poachers, where 14 rhinos had been poached, were Atherstone,

Nwanedi and Letaba Ranch Nature Reserves.

Of concern was a reserve such as D’Nyala Nature Reserve, where two rhinos were poached during 2013, and only six field rangers are employed.

The value of animals lost to poach-ers in all the reserves during this time is conservatively estimated at a staggering R25 million.

“The conservation of our animals must be prioritized to enhance inter-national tourism, which will stimulate job creation as well as to conserve our natural heritage for generations to come,” said the DA.

They will therefore table a motion calling on the LEDET MEC, Seeap-aro Sekoati, to tighten measures to protect Limpopo’s wildlife.

• MONUMENT TER ERE VAN SOUTPANSBERG KOMMANDO Alle oud-lede van die Soutpansberg Kommando, asook ander belangstellendes, word uitgenooi na die onthulling van ‘n monument ter herdenking van lede van die Soutpansberg Kommando wat diens verrig het in die Verre-Noorde voor die Anglo-Boere Oorlog, tot en met die ontbinding van die kommandostelsel.

Die monument sal deur brig-genl. C. J. Bornman (afgetree) onthul word op Maandag, 18 Mei om 15:30 op die plaas Vliegenpan, sowat 4 km oos van die N1 op die Bandolierkop/Elim Hospitaalpad.

Ná die kort onthullingsfunksie sal daar ‘n geselligheid met ‘n vingerete by die Lalapanzi Hotel plaasvind. Vir die verrigtinge op die plaas moet ‘n eie opvoustoel saamgebring word.

Dit is weer tyd dat mense hulle hoë hakke, skoolskoene of stewels kan verruil vir ‘n gemak-like paar tekkies – en dit nog vir ‘n goeie doel.

Tekkie Tax Dag is weer om die draai en sal vanjaar op 29 Mei plaasvind. “Kry jou R10 plakker (dit is die belasting wat jy betaal) en dra jou tekkies. As jy nie tyd het nie, kan jy ‘n paar van ons funky skoenveters genaamd ‘tekkie tags’ aanskaf,” nooi die organiseerders van hierdie nasionale dag.

Afhangend van waar ‘n persoon se hart lê, kan hulle een (of meer) afdelings kies waarvoor hulle R10-plakkerdonasie gaan. Die afdelings is diere, basiese familiedienste, cool kinders, dienslewering aan gestremdes en essensiële onderwys.

Die projek word ondersteun deur vyf van Suid-Afrika se bekendste gesigte. Afrikaanse rymkletser Jack Parow is die diere-ambassadeur, Master Chef ster Sade Giliberti die basiese familie dienste ambassadeur, Sorina Erasmus (the Flooze) die kinder-ambassadeur, geliefde Expresso aanbie-der Katlego Maboe die ambassadeur vir gestremdes en die koningin van dans, Tebogo Kgobokoe, die onderwys ambassadeur. Die veldtog word on-derskryf deur 16 van die grootste nasionale wel-synsorganisasies in die land. Hulle is Epilepsie SA, Kindersorg SA, SOS Children’s Villages, CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation), Special Olympics SA, Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), HPCA - Hospice Palliative Care SA, KANSA, Imise-beyelanga Services , Meals on Wheels, VVA, ACVV, NG Welsyn, Highveld Horse Care Unit, SAVF en Cheshire Homes SA.

Mr Phillip Olivier of the Soutpansberg Ratepay-ers Association (SRPA) has once again invited members of the public to come and inspect the Makhado Municipality’s supplementary valuation roll.

Olivier said they had obtained a copy of the sup-plementary valuation roll from DDP Valuers, after receiving notice from the Makhado Municipality of their intent to amend their property rates policy and property rates bylaw. A copy of the supplementary valuation roll is available for inspection at the office of the SRPA in the Sentraal building in Erasmus Street. The Makhado Municipality gave notice of their intent to amend their property rates policy and prop-erty rates bylaw in term of Section 12(3) (b) and 21 of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act (Act 32 of 2000). Members of the public are invited

to submit written comments and/or to make written representations in this regard to the municipality. Any such comments or representations must reach the municipality on or before Monday, 25 May, by handing them in at the office of the municipal manager or by mailing them to Private Bag X2596, Louis Trichardt, 0920.

Copies of the draft property rates bylaw and draft property rates policy, as amended, are open for inspection during office hours at the Civic Centre (Room CO44, first floor, 83 Krogh Street, Louis Trichardt) or at the regional offices at Vuwani, Waterval and Dzanani. The draft bylaw and draft policy are also available on the municipal website www.makhado.co.za.

Bayer CropScience AG has submitted an application to the Registrar: Genetically Modifi ed Organ-isms Act for the intentional introduction of a genetically modifi ed organism into the environment of South Africa. This application is for continued fi eld trial studies initiated in 2008.The genetically modifi ed organism under study is the cotton species Gossypium hirsutum (Upland cotton), derived from the conventional cross of transformation event GHB614, named “Glytol”, and the stacked cotton “TwinLink”. Event GHB614 introduced a single copy of the 2mepsps gene from Zea mays. TwinLink cotton is derived from the conventional cross between events GHB119 and T304-40. Event GHB119 con-tains single copies of the bar gene from Streptomyces hygroscopicus and the cry2Ae gene from Bacillus thuringiensis. Event T304-40 introduced single copies of the bar gene from Streptomyces hygroscopicus and the cry1Ab gene from Bacillus thuringiensis.The 2mepsps and bar genes provide tolerance to herbicides with the active ingredients glyphosate and glufosinate-ammonium, respectively. The cry1Ab and cry2Ae genes provide resistance to lep-idopteran insects. The 2mepsps gene has been used as a selectable marker in the development of the stacked cotton.The objective of this release is to continue an agronomic assessment of GLT in the South African cotton production environment. This application is not for the production of food or feed products.The current application is for release on multi-trial sites on farmlands in the Limpopo province near the towns of Musina and Groblersdal. The sites have been used for the production of irrigated summer and winter crops for decades. The proposed trials will not exceed 2 hectares each where a minimum isolation distance of 300 m from other cotton varieties will be maintained. At the completion of the trial, all cotton plants will be harvested and the seed processed at a gin. Seeds from GLT plants will be exported to Cameroon for further research and development. All remaining seed will be destroyed by mechanical crushing, and all remaining trial plant material will be destroyed at the trial site by slashing. The trial sites will either be left fallow or planted with a different crop. Lukas 22:14-23

Daar is baie publieke vakansiedae waar-op gebeure in die geskiedenis herdenk

word. Alle Christene het die gebod om die dood van Jesus Christus te onthou. Ons moet Hom onthou wat vir ons sondes gesterf het sodat ons in vrede met God kan lewe en Hom aanbid.

Hoe moet ons die versoeningsoffer van Christus onthou of herdenk? Hy het beveel dat Sy wedergebore kinders saam moet sit en brood eet en die vrug van die wingerdstok moet drink, om Sy dood te gedenk. Die brood spreek van Sy liggaam wat verbrysel is en aan ‘n kruis vasgespyker is. Die wyn spreek van Sy bloed wat gevloei het op daardie dag.

Deur ons sondes te dra is Christus daardie dag deur God gestraf in die plek van Sy uitverkorenes. Met die Nagmaal sit ons saam met mede-gelowiges en Hom wat ons uitgenooi het, aan Sy tafel. Saam eet ons die brood en drink ons die wyn en dink aan die dood van ons Here. So is dit die wil van God dat ons die dood van Christus sal onthou, totdat Hy weer kom. Lees 1 Kor. 11:26.

Daarom moet ons ons Verlosser, Jesus Christus, lief hê bo alles, want Hy het homself gegee sodat ons vir ewig saam met Hom kan lewe.

Jesus se dood het na ‘n nederlaag gelyk, maar dit was ‘n oorwinning vir al God se kinders. Deur Sy dood word ons gered en word ons burgers van die hemel.

Ons is baie aan ons Verlosser ver-skuldig. Moet dit nooit vergeet nie.

“Ek moet seker een of an-der tyd begin dink aan

‘n trourok,” sug Daisy oor die telefoon.

“Hemel, Daisy, jy laat dit klink asof dit een of ander onplesierige plig is wat jy suu-tjies moet afhandel! Dis jou tróúrok, Daisy. Vir die mooiste dag van jou lewe!” Ousus is heeltemal ontgogel met Daisy.

“Weet jy, Ousus, dit voel vir my alles kry aandag: die gastehuis is amper klaar en word deur etlike professionele hande gepamperlang, al die plante met die wit blomme word daagliks vertroet-el, gevoed en gewater, ek spandeer my nagte om al die projekte te bestuur en te skaaf en te skuur aan ons eie Oom Schalk Lourens storie ... En elke oggend as ek in die spieël kyk lyk ek vir myself slegter en slegter. Bernard help ook nie juis nie – hy rits die meeste van die tyd iewers rond. Annerdag het ek ‘n hele middag spandeer om my mooi te maak en ‘n spesiale ete te kook vir hom en dit het glád nie gewerk nie!

“Miskien moet ek aanvaar ek is nie meer vandag se kind nie,” bekla sy haar lot verder.

“Daisy, jy moet nou nie dat ek my wip vir jou nie. Jy is jonk en skattig. Miskien is dit tyd dat jy bietjie profes-sionele hulp kry. Jy weet, een van daardie make-overs

wat hulle in al die vrouetydskrifte het. Hare, naels, tieties en tande. Dis juis nou die tyd wat

mens al hierdie goed doen om seker te maak jy lyk op jou heel beste vir die groot dag.”

“Ousus, ander bruide sit kalm agteroor met ‘n funksie-beplanner en haar ma en swaai haar septertjie en maak haar begeertes bekend, en siedaar! ander mense doen al die werk en sy daag net gedress en gepress op vir die seremonie. Ek werk my alie af! Ek doen alles self. Daar is nie tyd vir allerhande prinses dinge nie.”

Maar Ousus het genadiglik ‘n beter insig in Daisy se psige as wat sy vermoed. Ousus weet presies wat haar kleinsus nodig het en steur haar glad nie aan Daisy se besware nie. Drie dae later stop Ousus onder die koelteboom.

“Toe, toe, Daisy – is die Earl Grey al gemaak? En het jy nog van daai lekker var-koor-koekies van jou? Ek het groot gesels vandag, en daarna gaan jy jou tassie pak.”

Daisy staar oopmond na haar suster. Gewoonlik is Ou-sus skoon menssku en gesels sy nie sommer oor ditjies en datjies nie. Sy is veral nie so vol orders nie.

“Ja, Daisy, jy kan my maar so aankyk, maar vandag vat ek nie nonsens van jou af nie. Mamma sou graag hier wou wees om jou by te staan en in al jou vreugdes en dramas te deel, maar nou moet jy maar vrede maak daarmee dat ek

instaan vir haar. Kom sit dat ek jou kan vertel waarheen jy more op pad is.”

Stadig maar seker raak Daisy opgewonde oor wat haar ousus haar vertel. Van Die Ghoeroe. Die Een wat vrouens van grieselrig na glamorous toor. Wat nuwe lewe in selfs die vaalste ou vroutjie inblaas. Wonderwerke, elkeen van hulle. En Ousus het gedreig, omgekoop en mooi gepraat totdat sy ‘n afspraak vir die volgende dag gekry het.

Maar Daisy raak opstrop-pelis en steeks toe sy hoor dat sy alleen gaan. “Dan gaan ek nie Ousus. Jy kan maar die afspraak kanselleer. Dankie vir jou moeite, ek waardeer dit. Maar ek is nie lus om hierdie ding alleen te doen nie. As Mamma nog hier was, sou dit vir haar heerlik gewees het om saam te gaan sodat hierdie bomenslike wese haar ook onder hande kan neem.” Daisy loer skelm na Ousus – sy weet goed hoe om met haar ousus se kop te smokkel.

“Nou maar goed, Daisy. Ek sal verlof insit by die skool. Eintlik sal dit nogal interessant wees en ek het bietjie ‘n weg-breek nodig...” probeer Ousus dit nog rasionaliseer.

“Jippieeeee,” juig Daisy. “Ons ry vieruur more-oggend. Maak jy die padkos ... Nee toemaar, ek sal liewers. Jy kan vir ons van daai lekker fi lter-koffi e in ‘n fl es gooi en dan vat ons kondensmelk saam, net soos toe ons klein was!”

Ms Leigh Bristow, a founder of the Sumbandila Scholarship and Ridgeway College in Louis

Trichardt, is once more taking part in the Cash and Rocket Tour this year.

The Cash & Rocket tour is about inspiring woman getting on the road together to raise funds for charity. Last year, Bristow was honoured to be part of the Cash and Rocket race from Venice to Geneva and Paris and ending in London.

Although it sounds extraordinary that one might be funding women driving around in luxury cars, none of the funds raised go towards this endeavour. The women pay for their own trips entirely, but in Bristow’s case, all the money raised during the race goes towards the Sum-bandila Scholarship.

Bayer CropScience AG has submitted an application to the Registrar: Genetically Modifi ed Organ-isms Act for the intentional introduction of a genetically modifi ed organism into the environment of South Africa. This application is for continued fi eld trial studies initiated in 2008.The genetically modifi ed organism under study is the cotton species Gossypium hirsutum (Upland cotton), derived from the conventional cross of two transformation events: GHB614 and LLCot-ton25. Event GHB614, named “GL x LL”, introduced a single copy of the 2mepsps gene from Zea mays. Event LLCotton25 introduced a single copy of the bar gene from Streptomyces hygroscop-icus.The 2mepsps and bar genes provide tolerance to herbicides with the active ingredients glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium, respectively. The 2mepsps gene has been used as a selectable mark-er in the development of the combined cotton.The objective of this release is to continue an agronomic assessment of GL x LL in the South African cotton production environment. This application is not for the production of food or feed for consumption.The current application is for release on farmlands in the Limpopo province near the towns of Mu-sina and Groblersdal. The sites have been used for the production of irrigated summer and winter crops for decades. Each site will not exceed 1 hectare where a minimum isolation distance of 300 m from other cotton varieties will be maintained. On completion of the trial, all cotton plants will be harvested and the seed processed at a gin. Seeds from GL x LL plants will be exported to the USA for further research and development. All remaining seed will be destroyed by mechanical crushing, and all remaining trial plant material will be destroyed at the trial site by slashing. The trial site will either be left fallow or planted with a different crop. Die Soutpansberg Skietklub het die afgelope naweek hul gewilde jaggeweer-skietkompetisie by hul skietbaan buite Louis Trichardt aangebied. Die opkoms was baie goed en die kompetisie straf. Na wat verneem word het die skuts maar gesukkel om die “gemsbok” op 400 m, maar almal het die dag baie geniet. Rikus Smit (tweede .22 junior), Martin Van Wyk (derde .22 junior), Justin Breytenbach (derde jaggeweer junior/senior) en Wian Du Toit (eerste jaggeweer junior/senior en eerste .22). In die middel is Simone Du Toit (tweede .22 junior/senior), Tiny Rademeyer (derde .22 junior/senior) en Gezelle Koen (eerste .22 junior). Agter is Dirk du Preez (derde .22), Jannie van Zyl (eerste jaggeweer, tweede .22 en derde handwapen), Jadranko Jakovlef (tweede handwapen), Ampie du Toit (eerste handwapen) en Mate Ungrin (derde jaggeweer). Afwesig tydens die neem van die foto was Wilhelm Smit (eerste .22), MJ Erasmus (tweede jaggeweer) en Alecia Rieger (tweede jaggeweer). Foto verskaf.

Die Suid-Afrikaanse Plattelandse Muurbaltoernooi is hierdie jaar in George aangebied vanaf 7 tot 9 Mei. Theo Schlieben van die Soutpansberg Muurbalklub (Louis Trichardt) was ingesluit in die Limpopo-span. Die span vaar baie goed deur derde te eindig in die B-afdeling van die toernooi. Saam met Theo in die span was Franco Welman (voorheen van Louis Trichardt en tans in Polokwane), Robby Vilar en Henry Young, beide ook van Polokwane. Foto verskaf.

Hoërskool Eric Louw in Musina het tydens hul prysuitdeling vir swem en atletiek erkenning gegee aan swemmers en atlete wat die afgelope swem- en atletiekseisoen uitsonderlik presteer het. Voor, van links na regs, is Claudia Celliers (beste meisies hekkiesatleet, asook swem: junior Victrix ludorum), Kuda Sibanda (beste seuns langafstandatleet), Karabo Boikanyo (beste seuns hekkiesatleet) en Ashley Meyer (beste meisies langafstandatleet). Agter is Hanga Morembiwa (beste seuns baanatleet), Elné Lyon (beste meisies baanatleet), Jannemari Fourie (hoogste ABSA-totaal in atletiek, beste meisies veldatleet, asook swem: senior Victrix ludorum), Jandré Mallinson (atletiek: junior Victor ludorum), Jan-Karl Limbach (atletiek: senior Victor ludorum, asook swem: senior Victor ludorum), Carla Swanepoel (atletiek: junior Victrix ludorum) en Davies Malaudzi (beste naelloper). Twee van Laerskool Louis Trichardt se O/13-netbalspelers en een afrigter is opgeneem in die Limpopo-netbalspan. Hulle sal gedurende Junie die provinsie verteenwoordig tydens die alle ouderdomme netbaltoernooi by Laerskool dr. E.G. Jansen in Benoni. Van links na regs is Makgomo Nkoana, mev. Elzabé Stewart (afrigter) en Dineo Masipa.

Hierdie drie hokkiespelers van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt het hul provinsiale kleure verwerf. Voor is Dembe Ramuhuyu (O/14B). Agter, van links na regs, is Jenika Pohl (O/18A) en Amorien Venter (O/18A).

Louis Trichardt se rugby eerstespan het hul teenstaanders, die Mankwengspan van die Universiteit van die Noorde, stert tussen die bene huistoe gestuur.

Die eerstespan klop die Mankwengspan 60-0 in hulle eerste wedstryd van die Boet Fick-liga wat Saterdag hier op eie bodem beslis is.

Alhoewel Louis Trichardt ‘n oortuigen-de wen behaal het, was daar ‘n paar geval-le waaruit geleer kan word vir wanneer hul hierdie komende naweek teen die gedugte span van Noordelikes van Polokwane te staan kom.

Te midde van te veel balfoute was

die eerstes se verdediging goed en het hulle vanaf die afskop druk toegepas. Sommer binne die openingsminuut van die wedstryd het Wikus Davel Louis Trichardt se eerste drie gaan druk. Hierdie drie is blitsig opgevol met nog drieë, en teen halftyd was die telling 25-0. Ander puntemakers was Nollie Davel, Jaco Es-terhuizen en Werner Lee. Jacques Jordaan het die skopwerk gedoen, en feitlik elke drie vir sy span verdoel.

In die tweede helfte het die Mankweng-span ‘n aanval geloods, maar is telkens van hul doellyn teruggedryf. Mankweng se verdediging was ook wyd oop, wat Lou-

is Trichardt se twee rugbybroers, Wikus en Nollie, goed benut het.

Saterdag se wen besorg die eerstespan ‘n bonuspunt, wat beteken hulle verdien in totaal vyf punte. Louis Trichardt se tweedespan se puntetelling staan steeds op nul, nadat hulle nie Saterdag kon speel nie.

Altbei spanne sal egter hierdie Saterdag in aksie gesien kan word teen Noordelikes, en die eerste wedstryd sal om 14:00 af-skop by die Louis Trichardt Rugbyklub se velde.

Plaaslike ondersteuners word weer-eens uitgenooi om die spanne te gaan ondersteun.

Wikus Davel, een van die puntemakers, word platgeduik, maar slaag tog daarin om ‘n drie te druk.

Louis Trichardt se losskakel vir die eerstespan, Nollie Davel, stoei ‘n opening oop met die bal.
