Maandag is sy aansoek om verlenging van sy borgtog, han-gende ‘n dringende petisie by die Hooggeregshof in Pretoria teen sy vonnis, deur die hof geweier. Derhalwe is hy direk vanaf die hof na die gevangenis geneem. Els het op 2 Maart, ingevolge ‘n pleitooreenkoms met die Staat, skuldig gepleit op klagte wat verband hou met die jag, handel-dryf en besit van renosterhorings sonder die nodige permitte. Hy moet ook R1 miljoen aan die Groen Skerpioene betaal.

Verder is Els ook vier jaar tronkstraf opgelê weens die onwettige besit van agt horings van sy eie renosters. Dié vonnis is egter opgeskort. Els is na sy vonnisoplegging in Maart op R300 000 borg vrygelaat, han-gende sy aansoek om verlof tot appèl. Aanvanklik het die klagte teen Els betrekking gehad op 38 renosterhorings, maar die getal is later aangepas tot 30. Volgens die Streekhof was dit die meeste

renosterhorings waarvoor iemand tot nog toe aangekla is.

Volgens Els se verduideliking in sy pleitooreenkoms het hy die renosterhorings aangekoop met die oog om dit later te verkoop as die verbod op die handel in renosterhorings gelig sou word. Els het die horings aangekoop van sy medebeskuldigde, wyle mnr. Tom Fourie (51), wat later selfmoord gepleeg het. Die reno-sters is verdoof en hulle horings is geoes. Nie een is gedood nie. Els sou later vir bergingspermitte aansoek doen, maar voordat hy kon, is die horings vanuit sy wo-ning in Thabazimbi gesteel.

In sy aansoek om verlof tot appèl het Els se advokaat, mnr. Tom Dreyer, aangevoer dat Els se vonnis “ergerlik” was en dat hy in “toorn” gevonnis is deur die hof. Hy het gesê die hof het ‘n “mistasting begaan” deur nie sekere feite in ag te neem nie en dat die hof meer waarde moes heg aan die feit dat Els ‘n eerste oortreder is. (Vervolg op p. 2)

die boetevonnis wat Els opgelê is “enorm” was, veral omdat die Staat nie die presiese waarde van die horings kon bewys nie.

Dreyer het ook verder gesê dat die hof te veel waarde geheg het aan verswarende omstandig-hede, gemeenskapsbelang en media-uitlatings. “U edelag-bare, met groot respek, behoort die hof nie ‘n beskuldigde se lot te beslis deur te bou op reaks-ies en veronderstellings wat in die media ten toon gestel word en voorgehou word nie,” het

Dreyer gesê. Hy het afgesluit deur te sê dat ‘n boete met ‘n opgeskorte vonnis ‘n meer ge-paste straf sou wees.

Landdros Pat Cloete, wat die aansoek geweier het, het gesê die hof het die aanklagte teen Els ernstiger opgeneem as die Staat en die verdediging. “Die hof is tevrede dat hy die totaliteit van die omstandighede tydens vonnisoplegging in ag geneem het en daarom word appèl geweier,” het Cloete gesê.

Intussen het Dreyer Woens-dag bevestig dat Els nog in aanhouding bly. Hulle is besig

met voorbereidings vir ‘n dring-ende aansoek in die Hoog-geregshof om Els se borgtog te verleng. Teen druktyd het hulle nog gewag vir ‘n afskrif van Maandag se hofrekord wat ook by die Hooggeregshof ingedien moet word. Ná die dringende aansoek, het Dreyer gesê, gaan hulle ook petisie teen Els se vonnis rig. Buiten vir sy tronkstraf, loop Els steeds die gevaar dat die Staat op sy bates kan beslag lê. Lede van die Staat se batebeslagleggingseenheid is glo besig om ‘n saak teen Els te ondersoek.

Alhoewel inwoners groot genot put uit die talle nuutgeteerde strate in Makhado, heers daar ook onder hulle groot frustras-ie met dié strate se randstene en die opruiming van bourom-mel wat nie klaarkom nie.

Die datum vir voltooiing van die projek was einde Junie, maar volgens die hoofkontrakteur ry groot probleme met die subkon-trakteur die proses in die wiele.

moes die werk klaargemaak het. Nou moet ons hom uitskop,” het die hoofkontrakteur, Fantique Trade, se eienaar, mnr. Bennie Ncube, op 3 Julie gesê.

Ncube was nog nie seker wie nou die randstene gaan klaar-maak nie. Intussen lê ‘n hoop nuwe randstene in Munnikstraat, waar die randstene skynbaar te hoog is. Die spasie tussen die teer en die randstene moet met teer opgevul word. In Andersonstraat is die stofprobleem gelukkig iets van die verlede, maar die sypaadjies en middelmannetjie is steeds bestrooi met honderde randstene as ‘n stille monument van onafgehandelde werk.

‘n Hoop ou teer lê ook opge-stapel by die hoek van Munnik- en Stubbsstraat. Ncube het gesê dat sy mense al skoongemaak het en dat hy nie bewus is van daardie spesifieke slordige hoop nie. “Ek sal moet uitvind wat daar aangaan,” het Ncube gesê.

Nog ‘n faktor wat die spoed van die projek beïnvloed is laat betaling vanaf die kliënt, die Makhado Munisipaliteit, se kant.

“Ons het die betaalsertifikaat voorberei, maar daar is nie nou

geld om die hoofkontrakteur te betaal nie. Hy het nie onttrek nie, maar dit het reperkussies. Dit gaan nou net langer vat, want kontantvloei dryf enige besigheid. Hulle gaan nie voort tot hulle betaal word nie. Hulle sal hopelik volgende week betaal word,” het mnr. Pieter Meiring van die raadgewende ingenieurs, Dombo en Du Plessis, Dinsdag gesê.

Junie was die einde van die

munisipaliteit se finansiële jaar.“Die boekjaar se einde is nou

verby en dalk kry ons nou weer vooruitgang. Die kontrakteur moet nog skoonmaak. Daar is nog groot werke uitstaande by Presidentstraat, die randstene van die drie onlangs-geteerde strate en die verf van die strate. ‘n Mens kan verstaan dat die hoofkontrak-teur ook net een keer die verwers wil inkry om al die verfwerk te doen,” het Meiring gesê.

Die hoofkontrakteur sê dat hy nie bewus is van die slordige hoop bourommel op die hoek van Stubbs- en Munnikstraat nie en dat hy ondersoek sal moet instel.

Daar lê ‘n hoop nuwe randstene in Munnikstraat, waar die randstene skynbaar te hoog is. Die spasie tussen die teer en die randstene moet met teer opgevul word. Die subkontrakteur word uitgeskop en dit wil voorkom of inwoners nog maar lank geduld sal moet beoefen.

Met die huidige waterkrisis in Makhado, wat menige inwoner noop om water te skep by munisipale watertenkers, het die vraag ontstaan waar die water vandaan kom as daar nie water is nie. Dié vraag is meer relevant, veral nadat inwoners die afgelope twee weke opgemerk het hoe vragmotors water uit die spruit langs die Bergwater Hotel in plastiektenks pomp. Die Zoutpansberger het by navraag kon vasstel dat dit egter privaat boukontrakteurs is wat die water gebruik vir een van hulle projekte in Kutama. Die wenkbroue het ook gelig toe lesers sien hoe vragmotors drinkwater pomp uit die reservoir in Barnardstraat. Dit gebeur glo gereeld. Die Vhembe Distriksmunisipaliteit se woordvoerder, mnr. Ralushai Matodzi, het Dinsdag gesê dat dit onwettig is vir ‘n privaat instansie om water by die dorp se reservoir te pomp. “Die water is bedoel vir ons gemeenskap,” het hy gesê. Die Zoutpansberger het intussen dié betrokke vragmotor se registrasienommer nagegaan en bevind dat dit nie ‘n munisipale voertuig is nie. Matodzi het onderneem om uit te vind wie die mense is wat by die reservoir water tap, maar teen druktyd is nog geen antwoord ontvang nie. Foto verskaf.

Two men were killed in and around Makhado the past weekend.

According to Makhado po-lice spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike, a 55-year-old man was killed on a farm along the Von-deling road on Friday, 29 June. A fight had allegedly broken out between the man, his 22-year-old girlfriend and another man.

It was during this fight that the man was stabbed to death with a sharp object.

Both the girlfriend and the second man were arrested.

The following morning, po-lice were once again called to the bloody scene of yet another killing. The body of an unknown man was found lying next to the road on the corner of Burger and

Vorster Street. He had a stab wound to the chest.

In both cases, the police have opened murder cases for further investigation. In the second case, police have requested residents who might have witnessed the incident or who might have more information to assist them. The detectives can be contacted at Tel 083 206 5594.

Mnr. Werner van Zyl, ‘n werknemer van PC Worx in Makhado Crossing, het dadelik onraad vermoed toe twee mans verlede Donderdag by die win-kel aangedoen het. Volgens Van Zyl het die mans ‘n baie duur skootrekenaar by hulle gehad, waarvoor hulle ‘n batterylaaier

wou koop.Met dié dat hy onraad vermoed

het, het Van Zyl kop gehou en die rekenaar na sy werkbank agter in die winkel gevat, waar hy persoonlike dokumente, foto’s, musiek en video’s ontdek het van ‘n Afrikaanse gesin.

Onder andere het Van Zyl op ‘n curriculum vitae afgekom met ‘n kontaknommer. Die rekenaar het toe al die tyd aan ‘n vrou van Johannesburg behoort. Volgens

die vrou, sê Van Zyl, is die rek-enaar ‘n ruk tevore gesteel toe daar by hulle huis ingebreek is.

Die twee mans is gekonfron-teer met die inligting.

“Hulle het verskillende ver-skonings gehad oor waar die rek-enaar vandaan kom,” het Van Zyl gesê. Die sentrum se sekuriteit is dadelik geroep en die mans is in die winkel aangehou, totdat die polisie hulle kom arresteer het.

‘n Sakevrou van Makwassie wat daarvan beskuldig word dat sy glo verskeie boere se geld verduister het, het verlede Donderdag in die Louis Trichardt Distrikshof verskyn.

Die 38-jarige Helena Catha-rina de Swardt het verskyn op twee klagte van bedrog. Sy is op 18 Junie vanjaar aangekeer, nadat sy na be-wering onderskeidelik R40 000 en R45 000 van twee boere in die Alldays-omgewing gesteel het.

De Swardt het haarself glo as ‘n agent van Groenland Voere voorge-doen en boere geskakel om lusern by haar te koop.

Sodra die boere die geld in haar bankrekening betaal het, het sy glo in die niet verdwyn, sonder om die lusern af te lewer.

‘n Uitgevatte De Swardt het op 28 Junie vlugtig voor die hof verskyn. Haar saak is egter uitgestel om die polisie geleentheid te gee om dit verder te ondersoek.

De Swardt was hoogs ontsteld toe die Zoutpansberger ‘n foto van haar geneem het terwyl sy besig was om die hof te verlaat. Haar regsverteenwoordiger, adv. Leon Vorster, het op sy beurt die koe-rant se joernalis, asook een van die ondersoekbeamptes, voorgekeer en onder andere beskuldig daarvan dat hulle slegs “sensasie” soek.

Vorster het gesê dat die klagte teen sy kliënt steeds net bewerings is en dat hy nog nie eens ‘n saaknom-mer van die polisie ontvang het nie.

De Swardt se saak is uitgestel tot 10 Augustus vanjaar.

souw Terburgh (30) het Dinsdag in die Distrikshof in Makhado verskyn. Sy is Maandagmiddag laat by haar huis in hegtenis geneem en summier in die plaaslike polisieselle gebo-ender. Toe Rossouw se prokureur inderhaas ‘n na-uurse borgaansoek probeer bring het, kon die ondersoek-beampte in die saak glo nie opgespoor word nie.

Mnr. Charles Pieterse, Rossouw se prokureur, het Dinsdag gesê hy be skou dit as belaglik dat sy kliënt borg geweier is, maar deur die hof op ‘n waarskuwing vrygelaat is. “Wat was dan die doel van die arrestasie ge-wees?” het Pieterse gevra. “Dit is ver-regaande dat ‘n enkelma met kinders sommer net in die selle gegooi word.”

Die klag van bedrog wat teen Ros-souw gebring is hou verband met ‘n bedrag wat sy na bewering van die Hyundai Motorhandelaar op Makha-do gesteel het toe sy daar werksaam

was. Sy was sedert 2009 aange stel as die menslike hulpbronbestuurder. Volgens inligting het Rossouw na bewering geld wat veronderstel was om oorbetaal te word aan werkne mers se voorsieningsfonds in haar eie sak gedruk. Onraad is vermoed toe ‘n werknemer begin kla het dat daar fout is met sy fonds.

Provinsiale polisiewoordvoerder lt. kol. Ronel Otto het Dinsdagmiddag onderneem om die rede vir Rossouw se nag in die polisieselle te ondersoek, maar het die koerant meegedeel dat die polisie tans onder druk verkeer weens die huidige handboekkrisis wat hom in Polokwane afspeel.

Rossouw se saak is uitgestel tot 17 Augustus vir verdere ondersoek.

Intussen sal nóg ‘n vrou van Lev-ubu, die 32-jarige Anna Catharina Mullins, op 17 Julie in die Streekhof verskyn, ook op ‘n klag van bedrog. Die klag teen haar hou verband met ‘n bedrag van R651 000 wat in 2010 van Madikor 16 verduister is.

The portfolio head of corporate services at the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Lucas Manyuha, has promised that the shortage of water in Makhado, Sinthumule, Kutama and other areas will soon be over.

Manyuha addressed a media confer-ence on behalf of the executive mayor, Cllr Tsh itereke Matibe, at the Tshipise Aventura resort last Friday.

Manyuha said that he was aware that Makhado was currently experiencing a

water shortage. He promised that, with the amount of R401 million the Vhembe Dis-trict Municipality has set aside for water projects, the problem will soon be over.

“We have also set aside an additional R384m for operational costs and mainte-nance,” he added.

According to him, the ageing infrastruc-ture was an obstacle in their commitment to providing quality water to the commu-nities they serve.

“Our municipality has also made R40

million available to maintain the old in-frastructure,” said Manyuha.

“Currently we have projects that are up and running, connecting water pipes from the Nandoni Dam to the affected areas. By the end of July, a tender will be advertised for the connection of water pipes from Valdezia to the Makhado Water Project.”

He also mentioned that an amount of R26m has been set aside to address the sanitation backlogs in the communities.

Wanneer munisipale rekenings te hoog is, wil die meeste mense dit dadelik uitgesorteer hê. Maar hoe nou gemaak as die rekening te min is?

“Help, ek betaal te min!” is nie iets wat ‘n mens baie hoor nie, maar mnr. Joggie Pieterse (73) van Herfsakker in Makhado is een inwoner wie se munisipale rekening nie die korrekte elek-trisiteitsverbruik reflekteer nie en wat gevolglik te min betaal.

“Ek kan hulle los tot hulle hulle eie fout agterkom, maar dan moet ek alles gelyk betaal. Ek is afhanklik van ‘n ouderdoms-pensioen van R1200 en kan nie skielik ‘n reusebedrag vir elek-trisiteit betaal nie. Dit is die eerste keer in die ses jaar wat ek hier woon, dat ek probleme kry,” sê Pieterse.

Pieterse is in Februa-rie laas aangeslaan vir elektrisiteitsverbruik. Sedertdien wil dit voor-kom asof sy meter op die laaste lesing vasge-slaan het.

‘n Besoek aan Bi-res, die maatskappy wat die meterlesings vir die Makhado Munisipaliteit doen, het ‘n dokument opgelewer wat die kor-rekte lesings van Maart tot Junie aandui, na-dat die meter in Maart oorgeslaan het. Oom Joggie het hierdie doku-ment plus afskrifte van die rekenings gemaak en vir die munisipaliteit geneem. Hy was trouens meer as een keer daar. Beloftes van munisipale amptenare dat hulle na hom sou terugkom, is nie nagekom nie.

“Nou weet ek nie meer waar om hulp te kry nie,” het oom Jog-gie gesê. Ten einde raad het hy ‘n brief aan die burgemeester laat afle-wer en ook die Zoutpansberger genader. Die burgemeester, rdl.

David Mutavhatsindi, het aan die koerant gesê dat hy vir seker die rekening sal laat ondersoek.

Munisipale woordvoerder mnr. Louis Bobodi is op 28 Junie van die saak in kennis gestel en vrae is aan hom gestel. Op 3 Julie het Bobodi telefonies laat weet dat die sisteem by die finansiële afdeling sedert die oggend buite werking was en dat hy nog nie an-twoorde kon verskaf nie. Hy het onderneem om so gou moontlik antwoorde te gee.

Die hoop op vinnige reaksie wanneer die munisipaliteit ‘n paar verlore rande kan inhaal, het

“Al wat ek vra is ‘n korrekte en volledige rekening elke maand. Soos dit nou is, is dit onaanvaar-baar,” het dié pensioenaris gesê.

Project Names: Venetia PV/CPV Plant Phase 1 - Up to 75MW export capacityApplicant: BioTherm Energy (Pty) Ltd Proposed Activity: BioTherm Energy (Pty) Ltd is proposing to establish a commercial photovoltaic solar energy facility (utilizing either photovoltaic (PV) or concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) technology) on a site near Musina, Limpopo Province. This project will require an EIA process (Scoping & EIA phase).

A broader area of approximately 450 ha is being considered within which the facility is to be constructed.

The facility would include the following infrastructure• Photovoltaic (PV) or Concentrated Photovoltaic (CPV) panels with an export capacity of up to 75MW. Panels are proposed to be up to 20m in height (should CPV technology be utilized).• A new on-site 132kV substation and power lines up to 132kV in size will be erected to evacuate the power from the facility into the Eskom grid via the Venetia Substation located adjacent to the existing Transmission line which runs along the north eastern boundary of the site. This would include the construction of a new 132kV substation.• Mounting structure to be either rammed steel piles or piles with pre-manufactured concrete footings to support the PV/CPV panels.• Cabling between the project components, to be lain underground where practical.• Internal access road and fencing.• Workshop area for maintenance, storage and offices.

Location: The project is proposed on the Farm Gotha 102 MS. This property falls within the Musina Local Municipality.

In terms of sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with the EIA Regulations of GN R543 -R546, a Scoping and EIA are required to be undertaken for the Venetia PV/CPV Plant Phase. These project has been registered with National DEA under Application Reference number 14/12/16/3/3/2/329 (Phase 1).

Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required environmental assessments and public participation processes.

The departments of water, environmental and mining affairs have been criticized by United Nations World Heritage Committee (UNESCO) experts for putting coal mining ahead of the protection of the 1 100-year-old Mapungubwe World Heritage Site.

This was revealed in an unfavourable draft re-port on Mapungubwe and its future world heritage status during UNESCO’s 36th annual sitting in St. Petersburg in Russia last week. Mapungubwe is one of eight South African World Heritage sites that are protected by an international convention because of its “outstanding universal value”.

The report, among other things, warned that the opencast coal mining by Australian mining giant CoaL of Africa Limited (CoAL) poses a “major threat” to the integrity of Ma-pungubwe and could result in “unacceptable and irreversible damage” to huge strips of land in the vicinity.

According to the report, a UNESCO investigation team visited the area during January this year and was shocked at how big the Vele mine was. This team included Mr Lazare Eloundou, chief of the African unit of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, and Mr Dag Avango, a history researcher from the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology.

They noted, with concern, that the Department of Minerals and Energy had already authorised more than 20 other mine prospecting leases for coal, petroleum and gas in the Soutpansberg area, and that the government appeared to have ignored previous pleas to put the mining on hold by quietly giving CoAL the go-ahead.

Eloundou and Avango further noted that the world committee had asked the government to

put a hold on further mining development until a more thorough heritage impact assessment was compiled. They were, as a result, very surprised to find that the Vele mine was already 95% complete at the time of their visit.

Eloundou and Avango stated that it was “crystal clear” that CoAL had resumed its operations and stockpiled large volumes of coal. The monitoring team claimed that they had been presented with evidence that the only reason CoAL was using the more damaging opencast mining method was to save money.

In addition to urging CoAL to revert to under-ground mining, the team also submitted a draft recommendation urging the government to halt any further opencast coal mining in the Soutpansberg-

area. The team also re-

quested the Department of Environmental Af-fairs (DEA) to submit a copy of its integrated management plan and an updated report on the

state of conservation at Mapungubwe for review by 1 February next year.

Eloundou and Avango said they were not happy about the fact that the government did not have a proper buffer zone around Mapungubwe and rec-ommended a seven-kilometre buffer zone around Mapungubwe.

In the meantime, the DEA confirmed in a press release last Thursday that they had taken note of the concerns and recommendations of UNESCO and remained “committed to working with the committee in ensuring effective implementation of the convention, and will be co-operating to provide further information.”

UNESCO critical of coal mining at Vele

Naledi Development, the in-dependent consultants for Australian mining company Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL), has invited the public and af-fected or interested parties to comment on the amendments made to the draft environmen-tal management plan (EMP) on the Greater Soutpansberg Project.

Last week, the Zoutpansberger reported on the Soutpansberg Project, during which CoAL will start with a series of explo-ration drillings on 41 farms in the Limpopo Valley. This fol-lows CoAL’s acquisition of Rio Tinto’s Chapudi Coal Project and the accompanying six prospect-ing rights.

CoAL intends to drill 213 exploration boreholes over the next 10 months. Before they can continue, however, a new EMP needs to be signed off on

in order for them to receive their prospecting licence from the Department of Mineral Rights.

This draft EMP for the six prospecting rights was compiled and will be available for public comment by all interested parties for a period of 30 calendar days from Monday, 25 June, until Tuesday, 24 July.

Copies of the EMP will be available at Jacana Environmen-tals (7 Landdros Maré Street, Polokwane), Naledi Develop-ment (143 Zambesilaan, Si-noville), Waterpoort Farmers Association (Farm Secrabje 470MS), Makhado Municipal-ity (83 Krogh Street, mayor’s office), Makhado public library (corner of Erasmus and Kruger Street), King Tony Mphephu (Tribal office, Dzanani), Tanga Farm (security office, Nzhe-lele road), Soutpansberg Agri-cultural Union (118 Krogh Street,

Makhado), Patel’s shop (situated near Wylie’s Poort on the N1-north), Ester Makongoza from the Northwhich Padstal and at Lena Otto or Charles Visser from the Stasiewinkel in Mopanie.

People will also be able to request Naledi to mail all the relevant documents to them. Stakeholders can comment on the EMP by either completing a form or writing a letter to Naledi Development.

After the period for public review has passed, the EMP will be updated to take the comments received into consideration. Hereafter, the amended EMP will be submitted to all the relevant authorities. Once the authorities’ decision is known, all the stake-holders will be informed.

KNP embarks on major firebreak projectThis dry season, the Kruger National Park (KNP) should be safe from runaway veld fires, at least from the Mozambican border’s side, as Working on Fire (WoF) carries out a six-week project to establish a fire break all along this part of the KNP’s border.

“We are burning a 300km-long, 50m-wide firebreak all

As the chances of runaway veldfires during the dry win-ter months increase, there are several measures residents can take to prevent potential grass fires.

First of all, contact the local fire protection association (in terms of the Veld and Forest Act) with regard to suitable dates to burn firebreaks; fire-fighting equipment required; fire-fighting training required for use of fire-fighting equipment; and weather warnings for the area involved.

Furthermore:

* Ensure the grass height is managed at all times.

* Limit burning of garden refuse to a safe area and ensure some form of fire-fighting mea-sure is close at hand, such as an extinguisher or garden hose.

* Ensure smoking materials (cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco) are completely out and discarded in an appropriate manner.

* Ensure a clear area, free of any vegetation, is maintained around the braai area.

* Don’t park vehicles on dry

grass.* When doing off-roading in

long grass, ensure that a spark arrester is provided for internal combustion equipment.

* Don’t take burning embers out of the fire area.

* Store flammable liquid con-tainers in a safe place.

* Provide an evacuation plan for your house and ensure every-body knows what is expected of them in the event of a fire.

Tips in helping prevent runaway fires

along Kruger’s eastern bound-ary,” says WoF’s ground opera-tions manager for the area, Bon-gani Nhlabathi. Two WoF teams, from Nelspruit and Waterval Boven, are working on this op-eration. One team started at the top part of the border with Mozambique, working their way down, while the other started from the bottom up, from Croco-dile Bridge, at the same time, on 22 June, according to Bongani.

Each WoF team consists of 25 firefighters, both men and wo men, who were previously un-employed. WoF is a government-funded, job-creation programme focusing on integrated fire man-agement in South Africa. Accor-ding to www.workingonfire.org, WoF firefighters are trained in fire awareness and education, prevention and fire suppression skills. These men and women form veld and forest firefighting ground crews and are stationed at bases around the country to help stop the scourge of wildfires.

WoF wildland firefighting crews are typically called to assist at potentially catastrophic local wildfires, as well as na-

tionally, when local firefighting resources are stretched to the limit. For this reason, many of the WoF bases are established in part-nership with organisations such as SANParks, CapeNature and

Seminar helps you handle your moneyHow to manage your finances is an important skill, and the Agapé Christian Centre was packed when a seminar on “Discovering God’s way of handling money” was offered by a financial expert.

Margaret Lamprecht, with 38 years of experience in the corpo-rate world, resigned three-and-a-half years ago to work full-time at teaching people how to handle money. Lamprecht is from the City of Hope Logos Centre in Kimberley and used the course of Crown Financial Ministries in her two-day seminar, presented from 29 to 30 June.

One of the eight topics was the handling of debt. Personal consumer debt in South Africa increases at a staggering rate.

“We are drowning in a sea of

debt, with the average family spending far more than it earns each year. Debt has become a way of life for many people. The good news is that the way into debt is the same way as ac-cumulating wealth; it depends on which way your feet are turning,” Lamprecht said.

Practical guidelines were giv-en to get out of bad debt. Good debt can be money borrowed for a home loan or a business. To get out of debt, establish a writ-ten budget. List your assets and determine whether you should sell any assets and use the money toward debt reduction. List your liabilities. Establish a debt repay-ment schedule and decide which debts to pay off first, based on the size of the debt and the interest rate of the debt. First pay off the

smallest amount debt and, once paid off, add the payment to work off the next debt.

“Everyone should know ex-actly when their D-Day, that is their Debt-free Day, is!” Lampre-cht said. She donated a one-rand coin to every person attending the seminar, to illustrate that a person can start saving and investing with a small amount.

The other topics were counsel, honesty, giving, work ethics, sav-ing, investing and teaching your children financial skills.

In the discussions, people were taught how to set up their personal financial statements, set financial goals, record income and spending, to complete a monthly budget, and to avoid risky investments and set goals for investing.

“The good news is that the way into debt is the same way as accumulating wealth; it depends on which way your feet are turning,” Margaret Lamprecht (left) said at a seminar entitled “Discovering God’s way of handling money”. Lamprecht donated a one-rand coin to every person attending the seminar, to illustrate that a person can start saving and investing with a small amount.

Mnr. Arnoldis Francois van Tonder, alombekend as Oom Vossie, is op 26 Junie na ‘n kort siekbed in die ouderdom van 66 jaar in die Zoutpans-berg Privaat hospitaal in Makhado oorlede.

Van Tonder, onthou familie, was ‘n stoere boer gewees op sy fami-lieplaas Downton naby Schoemansdal.

“Hy was altyd op die trekker gewees,” het sy familie gesê.

Hy was verder ook ‘n man wat ‘n stewige hand druk kon gee, wat nooit sy rugby gemis het nie en altyd regge-staan met ‘n grappie of snaakse vragie.

Van Tonder is op 10 Januarie 1946 in die Soutpansbergstreek gebore en het nog sy

laerskool loopbaan by die des-tydse Schoemansdal Veldskool voltooi. Hy het ook later sy egg-enote, Ina, hier ontmoet.

Van Tonder word oorleef deur sy eggenote en enigste oorlewende seun, Douw. Hy het

verlede jaar in April sy oudste seun, Buks, weens ‘n motoron-geluk aan die dood afgestaan.

Bekende Oom Vossie skielik oorlede

Vriende en familie het met hartseer afskeid geneem van mev. Rieks Geyser. Sy is verlede Donderdag na ‘n kort siekbed in die ouderdom van 76 jaar oorlede. Geyser, wat oorspronklik van Louis Trichardt afkomstig is, was vir die afgelope jaar woonagtig in Polokwane by haar seuns. Sy word oorleef deur haar drie seuns Thys, Howard, Lourens en dogter Meisie, ses kleinkinders en twee agterkleinkinders. Wyle Geyser is Donderdag, 5 Julie, vanuit die Volle Evangelie Kerk begrawe. Zimbabwe and SA police net 28 suspects in joint operationZimbabwean and South African police at the Beit Bridge Border Post have arrested 28 alleged criminals, among them smugglers and notorious armed robbers, operating in bushy areas along the Limpopo River.

Local police spokesperson Chief Supt Law-rence Chinhengo said the suspects were arrested

between Monday and Thursday last week, during a joint border operation along the Limpopo River. “Among those arrested, five are known serial armed robbers. Twelve of the 28 have since been convicted and sentenced to between five and 10 years in jail,” he added.

“We also rounded up several touts operating at

the border post where they swindle unsuspecting travellers of their money by masquerading as bor-der officials and clearing agents,” he said.

Chinhengo mentioned that the operation was aimed at restoring sanity along the border.

“Crime knows no international boundary,” he said.

Dr Casper Venter naby aan die eindpunt in moordende Freedom Challenge 2012Dr. Casper Venter se epiese stryd om die moor-dende Freedom Challenge te voltooi, is amper iets van die verlede. Teen druktyd het hy nog ‘n paar honderd kilometer gehad om te voltooi van die bykans 2 400 kilometer roete.

Meer as die helfte van die rapsie meer as 50 deelnemers wat in Pietermaritzburg weggespring het, het reeds onttrek. Die moeilike omstan-dighede, beserings en meganiese probleme het hulle tol geëis. Casper het op Maandag, 18 Ju-nie, weggespring en moet die tog voor 13 Julie voltooi. As alles egter volgens plan verloop kan hy eerskomende Vrydag of Saterdag in Wellington arriveer, wat beteken dat hy die roete in minder as 20 dae voltooi het.

Casper het Maandag ‘n verrassingsbesoek gehad van sy familie wat hom op Willowmore ingewag het. Die dag se 171 kilometer roete het hulle deur Baviaanskloof geneem en buiten die steiltes moes hulle ook die uiterste koue trotseer. Sy vrou en

kinders se kuiertjie was ‘n welkome breek voor die volgende oggend se 168 kilometer skof na Prince Albert, wat selfs nog kouer was. Casper het na die tyd opgemerk dat hy lank laas in sy lewe so koud gekry het. “Miskien het ek nou die laaste bietjie vet om my lyf verloor,” het hy gespot.

Casper se vrou, Sarah, het opgemerk dat die geesdrif onder die fietsryers besonder goed is. Casper ry in ‘n groep saam met drie ander fietsry-ers en alhoewel hulle moeg lyk na meer as twee weke in die saal, geniet hulle die uitdaging en is vasberade om klaar te maak.

Die tog het sy kwota probleme opgelewer en teen Woensdag was Casper al op sy derde saal. Sy fiets se raam het kort na die wegspring gebreek, maar is tydelik herstel met ‘n stuk bloudraad en ‘n pyp-klamp. Die Freedom Challenge word beskou as een van die strafste uitdagings waaraan sportmanne en -vroue kan deelneem. Hulle spring in klein groepies weg oor ‘n periode van ‘n maand. Die fietsryers

is op hul eie aangewese en moet met behulp van roetekaarte hul weg van die een oornagpunt na die volgende vind. Die oornagstasies is dikwels plaashuise of ou skoolgeboutjies en die fietsryers moet self besluit of hulle wil stop of deurdruk na die volgende punt toe. ‘n Warm bord kos wag darem gewoonlik by die punte waar hulle aandoen. Die deelnemers het net 26 dae om die roete te voltooi, wat meebring dat hulle dikwels vroegoggend we-gspring en tot laat in die nag ry.

Deelnemers moet hulle eie gereedskap, on-derdele, ekstra klere en voedselaanvullings saam-dra op die fietse. Daar is nie ondersteuningspanne wat die fietsryers vergesel en bystand verleen nie. Voor die resies kry elke deelnemer 20 twee-liter roomysbakke waarin hulle ekstra onderklere, klere en kos moet inpak. Hierdie roomyshouers word dan vooruit op die roete gestuur en by die oornagpunte gelos. Vanjaar se resies is reeds gewen deur die legen dariese Martin Dreyer in ‘n rekordtyd. Martin

het ‘n dag na Casper-hulle se groep weggespring, maar reeds verlede Vrydagmiddag in Wellington aangekom. Hy het die bestaande rekord van 12 dae en 15 ure met bykans ‘n dag verbeter. Die nuwe rekord is 10 dae, 16 ure en 40 minute. Die vorige rekordhouer, Alex Harris, was nie lank na hom klaar nie en het die roete voltooi in 10 dae, 23 uur en 57 minute. Die gemiddelde spoed waarin Martin die roete voltooi het, was 8,47 km/h (en dit word gemeet vandat hulle begin ry tot hulle by die eindstreep aankom).

Woensdagoggend (4de) was Casper op pad na Gamkaskloof (Die Hel), maar die plan was om deur te druk na Rouxspos waar hulle sou oornag. Daarna bly nog ses stasies oor waar hulle aandoen, onder andere by Montagu, McGrecor en Diemersfontein.

Casper neem aan die Freedom Challenge deel om geld in te samel vir die Makhado Care Group, ‘n plaaslike groep wat hulle beywer om sorg te bied aan kankerpasiënte.

Residents of the small village of Shaminyami in the Njakanjaka area experienced a huge shock last Wednesday, when a 19-year-old girl was allegedly attacked and beaten to death by her boyfriend.

According to the police, it is alleged that Ntsutsheko Baloyi (19) attacked his girlfriend, Khavisani Mthombeni, over a cell phone. Khavisani was coming from a local church when the alleged attack took place. He apparently took her cell phone after the incident.

W/O Kedibone Mabatha of the police at Wa-terval said that the police had arrested Baloyi the day after the incident. He confirmed that when Baloyi was arrested, he was found in possession of the victim's cell phone.

"The incident happened just next to the vic-tim's home. Neighbours said that they had only heard a scream from the victim, saying she was being attacked," he said.

Mabatha added that they had opened a murder case, but that their investigations were continuing.

Baloyi appeared in the Waterval Regional Court and the case was postponed to Friday, 6 July (today). He remains in custody.

Khavisani was a Grade 11 pupil at Marholeni High School. The victim's uncle, Mr Million Mthombeni, said that the family was greatly saddened about their niece's death. "We are very angry. She was not supposed to die like that. This is very bad and has traumatized the whole family," he said. Mthombeni added that he wanted to see justice take its course. "Some-body must pay here,” he said.

Baloyi is a Grade 12 pupil at Hluvuka High School in the nearby Nkuzana village.

Soveel heerliker is die bloed van Jesus as die van ‘n lam, daarom moet ons soveel heiliger en inniger met God wandel.

Toe Israel tussen die twee mure water deur die Rooi See op droë grond stap, het hulle niks gehad om op te vertrou nie, behalwe op God en Sy almag. Geloof gee oor aan God sodat Hy kan werk.

Anthony Archer van Makhado het Donderdag sy nuwe fiets in ontvangs geneem wat hy ingepalm het as algehele wenner van die 10km Kremetart bergfietswedren op 10 Junie. Die fiets is aan hom oorhandig deur Jandré van Jaarsveld van die P&L Hardeware Fietsryklub. Volgens Anthony gaan hierdie sy “skuurfiets” wees.

Lede van die Soutpansberg Posduifklub het die afgelope naweek hul wedvlugsei-soen voortgesit met ‘n Duitse-, ope- en jaaroudwedvlug vanaf Heidelberg.

Die Duitse-wedvlug word gewen deur T&H Meyer, nadat hul wenduif die af-stand voltooi met ‘n spoed van 1287.52 meter per minuut. Hulle palm ook die 2de tot 9de, asook 12de plek in. Marx Hokke was 10de, 11de en 20ste en Danie Lourens

13de tot 19de.In die opewedvlug is dit Danie wat met

‘n eersteplek spog, nadat sy wenduif die afstand voltooi met ‘n spoed van 1400.36 meter per minuut. Hy was ook 11de en 12de. Isaac Naudé was 2de, 3de en 4de, T&H Meyer 5de, 6de en 7de, Marx Hokke 8ste,9de en 10de, Louis Gosman 13de, 14de en 15de en Tiny de Klerk 16de, 17de en 18de.

Danie stap ook in die jaaroudwedvlug met die louere weg, nadat sy wenduif die afstand voltooi met ‘n spoed van 1273.55 meter per minuut. Hy was ook 8ste en 9de. Louis was 2de, 3de en 4de, Isaac 5de, 10de en 12de, Marx Hokke 6de, 13de en 17de, T&H Meyer 7de en 11de en Tiny 14de, 15de en 16de.

Danie spog met twee wenners vanaf Heidelberg


Fietsryer ernstig beseer ná hy voor voertuig inry‘n Fietsryer is ernstig beseer, nadat hy in ‘n motor vasgery het op die Levubu-pad net buite Makhado.

Die ongeluk het tussen 09:00 en 10:00 op 28 Junie gebeur. Die bestuurder van die voertuig, me. Vanessa Gilfillan, het in ‘n westelike rigting na Makhado gery.

Regoor die afdraai na die skouterrein en Eltivillas, het ‘n fietsryer uit die oop stuk veld oorkant die afdraai gekom en die pad begin kruis.

“My oog was stip op die pad om dop te hou vir voertuie op pad na Levubu of voertuie wat vanaf die Eltivillas/skouter-

rein pad voor my wil indraai. Skielik was hier net ‘n fietsryer reg op my. Hy het nie links of regs gekyk of gerem nie. Toe was daar net glasstukke op my en daar lê hy,” het Gilfillan vertel.

Direk na die ongeluk was sy in ‘n erg geskokte toestand en het net aanmekaar

die hoop uitgespreek dat die fietsryer moet lewe. Dit het vir om-standers gelyk asof daar ernstige hoofbeserings by die slagoffer was. Die ambulansdiens en polisie was vinnig op die toneel.

Polisiewoordvoerder kaptein Maano Sadiki het op 3 Julie gesê dat die slagoffer ernstige beserings opgedoen het en dat hy reeds per he-likopter na ‘n hospitaal in Polokwane vervoer is. Sadiki het bevestig dat ‘n saak van roekelose bestuur en nalatigheid oopgemaak is.

Three lives were claimed by horror crashes on local roads the past week, while four more people were left in-jured.

The first life was claimed in a crash on the N1 near Musina on Thursday, 28 June. According to information available the accident occurred around 13:00, causing traffic to back up along this busy stretch of the national road. The occupants were on their way to Zimbabwe.

Another man died instantly in an ac-cident near the Lalapanzi Hotel on the N1 south on Sunday.

Police in Makhado suspect that the man’s bakkie might have sustained a puncture and, as a result, the driver lost control and swerved into the lane for oncoming traffic, crashing into another vehicle. One woman, a man and a 10-year-old child sustained injuries and had to be treated in hospital.

In the latest accident, a Zimbabwean man lost his life after the vehicle he was driving collided with a truck near the Elim turn-off on the N1 south just outside Makhado on Monday evening. The man was travelling towards Polokwane. Local police said they were not yet sure as to the cause of the accident.

plaaslike polisiewoordvoerder kapt. Maano Sadike bevestig dat daar nie baie sake in die nywer-heidsgebied aangemeld word nie. Hy het wel toegegee dat die polisie dalk hul sigbaarheid, wat patrollering betref, in die gebied kan opskerp. Sadike het ook daarop aangedring dat inwo ners dadelik gevalle van misdaad by die polisie moet aanmeld, sodat dit behoorlik ondersoek kan word.

Die eerste wedstryd sal om 15:00 afskop, wanneer Dendron (LTT 3) vir Ohrigstad die stryd sal aansê. Hierna sal Louis Trichardt se tweedespan teen Winterveld te staan kom om 16:00. Die hoofwedstryd sal 17:30 afskop, tussen Louis Trichardt se eerstes en Loskop.
