Schools showcase theirtalent at arts festivalTWO schools in Drakenstein, Ihlume-lo Secondary and Weltevrede Secon-dary have qualified to showcase theirtalent in the arts festival for schoolsat Artscape from 13 to 28 August at19:00.

This year a record number of 114schools entered which means that nearly3 000 learners are sharing the stage. Onaverage the audience can look forward to12 performances per evening.

Any performing art genre, with the ex-ceptionofdramaiscatered for in the festi-val. Choirs, dancers, musicians, speechand verse may be presented in ensembleor solo pieces, which should be less thanten minutes long.

Visual art created by learners, such asdrawings, paintings, sculpture and crafts

ALOCALballerina,RoxannePaulse (17)of the Joy CargillStudio of Ballet, hasbeen accepted tostudy ballet at theUniversity of CapeTown School ofDance next year.

Roxanne is a Gra-de 12 learner at LaRochelle HighSchool and recentlyshone at the PaarlBallet Eisteddfod.

She took part inthe group, trio, duetandsolodance,win-ning the solo trophyas well as the trio.She shone in all the other categories aswell.

She choreographed her own solo underthe supervision of Joy Cargill.

“Roxanne was fantastic. She was deter-mined that she could do something diffe-rent, so two weeks before the Eisteddfod,usingmusicchosenbyhershechoreogra-phed a new dance shelving the originalone,” says Joy Cargill.

“She is a very committed student”.The dances were adjudicated by a fully

qualified ballet examiner. Not only didRoxanne win the trophy for her solo, butshe won it against a second year student

of the WaterfrontTheatre School.

The followingmorning she was al-so one of only 20 ofthe 88 candidateswho had auditio-ned, to be acceptedto study at the Uni-versity of CapeTown School ofDance.

Roxanne doesn’tonly work hard inballet, but also deli-vers her best whenit comes to herschool subjects,which include Bio-logy, Computer Ap-plication Technolo-gy and Maths.

HerparentsMarius (principalofElsen-burg) and Alta (nurse at Klein NederburgClinic) are very proud of their talenteddaughter.

Says Roxanne, “I started ballet whenIwasthreeyearsoldwithmysister,Moni-que, who is currently a BA Sport Sciencestudent at the University of Stellenbosch.Since then Ihavealways focusedonballetanddancing. I’mverygrateful toJoy,whois like a second mother to me and I appre-ciate everything she has done for me.”

This talented dancer hopes to travel asa ballerina and see the world, after whichshe hopes to open her own dance school.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape Govern-ment held a workshop at Bien Donné for carers who play an important role in the careof initiates during the traditional circumcision rites. MANDELA DAY. On 18 July, South Africans rolled uptheir sleeves to celebrate Nelson Rolihlahla Mande-la’s 94th birthday by doing 67 minutes of communityservice. Staff of Perdeberg Winery divided themsel-ves amongst three rural nursery schools and showe-red them with gifts and storytelling. The schools thatbenefitted from the visit were Vryguns, Zwartfonteinand Feetjieland nursery schools. The kids wrote mes-sagesanddrewpictures forMadibawhilstPerdebergstaff members handed each child a blanket and apacket of sweets. They also handed over plastic ta-bles and chairs, mattresses, toys, mats and scootersto the schools.
