REPRESENTATIVES of one of Usiko’s big-gest sponsor, British Airways, came toStellenboschlastweektolearnmoreaboutthe project they are supporting.

The delegation spent time learning aboutUsiko, a Jamestown-based non-profit organi-sationworking to uplift youths at risk, at Stel-lenzichtHighSchool inJamestown, andspoketo children from Cloetesville and Jamestownwho are involved in the project.Thedelegationwerevery interested inwhat

the youths had to say about the organisation, andwhat the impactof their involvementwiththe programme has been. After the formalities were completed, the

delegation helped to plant some trees on theschool grounds and gave the children somehealthy time off with a soccer game.Usiko, which was established 11 years ago,

has two main functions. The first is a court-based diversion programme for youths whohave been in conflict with the law.“This is the only programme of its kind in

the whole of the Cape Winelands District,”says Rudi Oosterwyk of the Gaia Foundation, another ofUsiko’s sponsors. “The programmefocuses onhelping the child andhis orherpar-ents to deal with the issues through amentor-ship programme to ensure that the child doesnot revert to crime again.”The programme is mostly for children who

have committedlesser offences, such as theft orshoplifting, andUsiko has seenmany successesthroughout. The second fo-

Atthe moment theprogramme is fo-cused on Stellen-zicht and Cloetes-ville Senior Sec-ondary Schools, where the risk ofgetting involved inthese activities isdeemed to be very high. The programme teaches the children confi-

dence and leadership skills through naturecamps and field trips. They meet weekly, andthe children eachhave amentor towhom theycan turn in times of need. The group further aims to create public

awarenessaboutcrimepreventionandyouthsat risk.“We want to make young people aware of

the impact of their wrongdoings on their vic-

tims and their communities by reawakeningawareness of the importance of ritual andstorytelling,” Oosterwyk explains. The youths’ parents are involved in the pro-

gramme, and also attend meetings with men-tors to discuss family issues.Usiko also nurtures two soccer teams, one

Fritz speaks onchild grantsIT is of grave concern that children arebeing kept from their school work be-cause their parents have to take themwith to re-register for child grants, a so-cial development official has said.It recently came to light that children

are missing out when their parents goto re-register at the South African So-cial Security Agency (Sassa).“Ihavespokenwith theregionalhead

for Sassa in theWestern Cape to appealfor alternative arrangements in this re-gard,” says social development MECAlbertFritz. “Ihavesuggested that theyextend their operating hours purely forthis project, so that parents can presenttheir children either after school or atweekends.“I have for a long time been advocat-

ing this type of conditionality – wherethe receipt of a child-support grant hasto be conditional upon children attend-ing school. Parentsmust take responsi-bility and be held accountable whentheir children are not in school.”Fritz says he recognises the need for

this source of income in many poorhouseholdsacross thecountry, but saysitmustneverbeobtainedat theexpenseof a child’s education. “Their educationis their one chance out of a life of po-verty and dependence on grants.”

Are you prepared for amajor catastrophe?HEARING the siren of the fire engine as itrushespastyourhomeonaSaturdaymorningprompts thoughts of where it’s going, whosehouse or business is burning, and the natureand scale of the danger or loss to thoseinvolved.Uncomfortable moments like these can

often, however, prove instructive – “Contem-plating the consequences of one’s own homeburning down often sets inmotion a valuableappraisal of personal priorities and the pro-tections in place – or otherwise – to preservethese,” says Gari Dombo, managing directorof Alexander Forbes Insurance.Considering how much time, savings and

effort are put into building and paying off ahome, andhowlong this takes, it is surprisinghowpoorlymanypeoplearecoveredformajordisaster.Yet the term “disaster” is relative. To the average person, a disaster would be

damage that they could not afford to repair, compromising their lifestyle to an intolerabledegree, either because the scope of their coverwas too narrow, or because they were simplyunder-insuredfortheriskstheywererunning.As far as scope is concerned, all buildings

policies list the major causes of damagewithin their perils, such as fire, explosion, storm, flood and earthquake. While at first glance this seems to cover

most of the likely causes of major disaster,

Dombowarns consumers towatch out for pol-icies that:

) exclude tremors causedbyminingopera-tions – while it is unlikely that a whole housecan be destroyed by mine tremors, having tofix multiple cracks over time could prove un-affordable, or wreck the value of your home;

) provide subsidence cover but excludedamage caused by “active soils” (soil expan-sion and contraction due to changing mois-ture content) – you should be aware that awider form of cover is available, without thesoil moisture expansion and contractionexclusion, even if this means a higherpremium;

) provide accidental damage cover with alimit when you may require accidental dam-age cover up to the full sum insured – Domboadvises consumers “checkwhether theyhaveaccidental damage cover and whether thiscover would still apply, for example, if aboulder rolled down the hill and destroyedtheir home”.Scope of cover aside, the other major cause

of serious problems when major disasterstrikes is under-insurance.The best advice is for policyholders to

routinelycheckthat thescopeof theirpoliciescovers the full scale of loss that they couldpotentially suffer, while also regularly up-dating thevalueof thosepossessions that theycannot afford to replace.

Straighten up and take noteof back painBENEDICT PATHER

TWO billion rand – that’s howmuch South Africa spends ontreatment for back pain everyyear according to the South Afri-can Society of Physiotherapy(SASP).

BackInjuryAwarenessWeekaims

to highlight the complications asso-ciated with back pain while teachingpeople methods of preventing backrelated injuries.

Reports suggest that people whospend longer hours working behinda computer and watching televisionmay unknowingly be causing backproblemswhichthey’lldetectata lat-er stage.

Investigations also show that thishas a negative impact on our econo-my as backache is a leading cause ofabsenteeism from work, resulting ina decrease in productivity.

Margaret van den Heever, physio-therapist at the Stellenbosch Univer-sity Sport Performance Institute(SUSPI), says “about 85% of all peo-ple above 30 will at some point oftheir lives experience back pain”.She says this is a global problem andthat in the Western Cape alone, backache is the second most commoncomplaint amongst patients.

Even though back awareness is avital part of our wellbeing, Van denHeever admits that, “people tend tobrush off back pain quite a lot”. Shesays that too little is being done torecognise the importance of prevent-ing injury and that the “issue it isstill not taken that seriously in SouthAfrica”.

Here are some tips Van Heerdengave:

) Maintainingahealthyweightorlosing weight if you need to. Havinga balanced diet will help with this aswell as providing the necessarycalcium and vitamin D you need tohave strong bones.

) Exercising regularly to helpkeep your body and back musclesstrong.

) Remembering to sit or standwith the correct posture. Avoidslumping or standing with hunchedshoulders. When you have to liftsomething, bend your legs and keepyour back straight. Here is a physiotherapist from Suspi busy assessing patient David Kappel.
