93 On Sunday a shocking tragedy happened in Norway where a gunman massacred 93 people. Many of us consider terrorism only as the extreme resort adopted by those lower hands to battle against the privileged classes. We now realise that even in westernised democratic society there is pressure building up in the face of multiculturalism especially Islam. Home grown extremists would also resort to terrorism to air out their grievances.

Chinese culture has come a long way over thousands of years amid political turmoils; Chinese immigrants all over the world by and large are still retaining their Chinese heritage. Although it is not uncommon that they cannot readily integrate into the mainstream society because of the financial factor, and despite the great barrier for our culture to be widely embraced, Chinese overseas are not largely marginalised as our culture is basically non-confronting. In Europe the integration of multiculturalism is much harder due to the exclusive and confrontational nature of Islamic culture.

Over the recent decades there has been a huge influx of Muslims into Europe; their pace of population growth coupled with the declining local birth rates in many European countries has aggravated a cultural discrepancy. Many second generation Muslims, being ethnic minority in the society, are keen to hold on to their Muslim values which they are so proud of. Their insistence as such very often has inflicted conflicts with the mainstream society, thus provoking those extremists who only want to return to their good old days.

This Norwegian massacre is not just an isolated incident, it surfaces the tension among the European society against the spreading of the Islamic culture; it is an issue to be addressed world-wide. Australia is a nation to many immigrants from all over the world; they all come here to build their future while at the same time they must learn to adapt an Australian life peacefully. This tragic incident might cause some societies to tighten up immigration policy in the short term, but I also believe it would challenge the Australian government to re-think thoroughly on the way forward in building a multicultural society in harmony.
