At the end of March and April we published two special editions

of the Centennial ROC which had raised eyebrow of the

community. Our internet version of the articles had also attracted

a record 300,000 hits by readers all over the world in less than

two months time. Three more editions would come out in June,

August and October.

On debut of the issue, many were sceptical on any political

motive; but on careful reading most readers were satisfied that

we were just presenting a journey record of the ROC but stop

short of any undesirable propaganda, criticism or boost up. We

only hope that all overseas Chinese would not forget our history

without which we would not have come thus far, and based on

the experience and lesson of which we could build our future.

I believe the two governments on both sides of the strait could

have the political scope to accommodate their people in better

knowing their history. Any government living in propaganda and

surveillance would lack the power and momentum to advance

and develop.

As Chinese living in Australia, we should also honour our past.

Earlier generations of immigrants had struggled to build up

community organisations that serve as a precious record of

Chinese history in Australia. Not well preserving these pieces of

record just lead people feel that Chinese only come ashore in

recent history. Indeed over the past century Chinese had been

around working hard as miners, farmers etc. and we have been

contributing to the establishment of many townships for the good

of this nation. Unfortunately owing to the White Australian Policy

much of our past had been stolen from history.

I think this generation of immigrants of ours should take on the

responsibility to conserve our own history and contribution in this

society. We must also inform and educate all Australians that our

ancestors here had a lot of input in building up this multicultural

country. The mainstream society would hardly pay due respect to

us if we Chinese are going to hide off our own history in Australia.
