Last two weeks, the media empire of the Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch has been under attack. His British newspapers have been involved in phone hacking, and the case has been alleged to the collusion with the police, violating people's privacy. As result, News of the World , a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, had been forced to published its final edition on 10 July 2011 after 168 years of publication. This has not only led to some of the senior staffs in British police lost their jobs, but the former chief executive of News International, Rebekah Brooks has also been arrested. All of a sudden, the media empire of Murdoch seems to be collapsing, while the world s attention has been focusing on the journalists code of ethics.

Freedom of media has been considered as one of the important elements in building a society with freedom. Without freedom of news, people will have no right to discover and understand the truth, while the authorities can easily become a dictator. Thus freedom of the media has been often seen as the symbol of democracy, freedom and human rights. In fact, lots of totalitarian countries leaders will always try to do everything possible to stop their citizens to gain access to information freely.

On the other hand, everyone has the right to protect individual privacy, except in some extreme cases like those involving with the national security. However with actions affecting the citizens privacy, like phone hacking in this case will definitely not be accepted. The media should do the reports based on facts. False reports not only are mistakes made by the media, but also affect the credibility of the media. However if the media put the individual interests above the interests of the society, and release reports that were derived from the infringement of personal privacy, it is a selfish behavior and socially unacceptable.

In Australia, lots of people will merely treat Chinese publications as advertisements with reproduced news from the world. There are very few people really care about the quality, originality and the authenticity of the contents. Some people may think that since most of the Chinese newspapers and magazines are free in Australia, they shouldn t ask for the quality, in which, I cannot agree with.

Publications with purely advertisements are not considered as media, as readers only expect for the commercial information. However if the publications have added news and other information to attract readers, the publishers will then be holding the responsibility for the contents of the publication. Therefore in order to ensure the publications have certain level of authenticity and creativity, we should respect and attach importance to these publications. We should not give up our bottom line just simply because the Chinese media only belong to the minority ethics publications. In Australia, as lots of Chinese publications have been often linked with business investments related to immigration, situations like overlooked the ethics of media have been often occurred.

I believe that with the collapsed of Murdoch s media empire, the mainstream society will start to emphasize more on the quality and operation of the media.
