Winde: ’Agriculturea key sector’Alan Winde,Western Capeminister ofeconomic op-portunities,addressedworkers,farmers, andrepresenta-tives of organ-ised agricul-ture in Stellen-bosch at thefirst of four di-alogue work-shops theWestern Capedepartment ofagriculturewill be hostingthis year.

Winde is the newly appointedminister responsible for the West-ernCapedepartmentofagricultureas well as the department of eco-nomic development and tourism.Winde said good communication

can only be achieved through dia-logue, and it is a critical aspect inanybusinesswishingtocompete inthemodernglobaleconomy.Windesaid the agricultural sector hasbeen identified as a key sector foreconomic growth and job creation.“The agricultural sector holds

significant potential which can be

unlockedthrough in-creased produc-tion efficienciesand competi-tiveness. Thesecan be achievedwith trainingand up-skilling,and a concertedfocus on innova-tion,” he said.The dialogue

workshops formpart of theWest-ern Cape gov-ernment’s 12-point plan in re-sponse to therural unrest ex-perienced in2012 and 2013.

A book with best practice casestudies, illustrating existing suc-cessful agricultural business mod-els,will also be released in thenearfuture. The dialogue sessions arefacilitated by dr Braam Hanekom,Dutch Reformed Church modera-tor and motivational speaker.Hanekom said that all the role

On Saturday 24 May Stellenbosch Square shopping centre hosted their first Dogbox Project as part of their Animal Awareness Month. The aim of the projectwas to varnish and decorate ready-made wooden dog kennels. Teams consisting of two people participated in this event and completed 35 kennels. Thekennels were donated to three local animal shelters (Animal Welfare Stellenbosch, Township Animal Rescue, and Animal Welfare Helderberg).
