Man (21) killedA Kayamandi (21) man was killed last weekafter he was allegedly caught stealing.

According to Lt Natalie Martin, the Stellen-bosch police spokesperson, the man had bro-ken into a home in Kayamandi and stole aDVD player. “As he was leaving, holding theDVDplayer, thehomeownerreturned.A fightensued and the alleged thief took out a knifeand attacked the homeowner.

Child safety during the holidaysThe winter school holidays are aroundthe corner and, compared to the summerbreak, it is a much bigger challenge tokeep the kids entertained this time ofyear.

For parents who are unable to take timeoff work or leave their children in the careof someone they trust, any school holidaybrings with it the added stress of constantlywondering if your child is safe.

RobDale,ManagingDirectorofADTSecu-rity in the Western Cape has some generaltips which parents can pass on to their kids.He says it is important that parents makesure youngsters know to keep all entry andexit doors locked and that no-one is to enterthe home without their permission:

“If you have a home security system in-stalled teach themhowtoactivate andde-ac-

tivate it andhowandwhen touseother secu-rity devices like panic buttons. Make a listof important telephone numbers – includingthe 10111 number - and show them that ithas been placed near the telephone for usein emergencies.”

Dale says there are also basic rules youcanteachyourchildto followif theyareleav-ing home to walk to a friend’s house for avisit. “If you usually drive your child to thehomeofa friendwho lives in thesameneigh-bourhood, rather walk the route with thembefore they have to do it on their own. Ex-plain that it isbetter towalkaslightly longerroute down familiar streets, where there ismore activity, than taking short-cuts acrossfields or deserted areas.

“On the day, let them call you when theyleave home and once they have arrived attheir destination. Advise your children that

if they do happen to find themselves in anunfamiliar street, they should look out fora police or security officer to help them andnever to accept advice or a ride from astranger.”

With shopping malls also far busier thanusual during holidays, Dale says the risk ofyourchildwanderingaway fromyouandbe-coming lost in the hustle and bustle is high-er. In a bid to keep them safe he advises that– as a general safety precaution – you helpyour child memorise their name, surname, home address and a contact number for atleast one parent: “Teach them that if theybecome separated from you they should im-mediately look for mall security and givethemthat information. If your child is readi-ly able to give them these details, the timetaken to track down a parent can be reduceddramatically.”

Check tyres regularlyRESEARCH has shown that damagedand badly maintained tyres are one ofthe main factors that contribute to acci-dents inSouthAfrica.Tyresare themostcritical safety component on a vehicle asit affects traction, handling, steering, stability and braking.

“Driversoften forget thatonlycorrect-ly inflated tyres can do their job proper-ly, delivering the right level of handlingperformance,” says Lize Hayward,Goodyear Group Public Relations Man-ager. “Drivers frequently make one ofthree classical mistakes: either theydon’tchecktheir tyrepressurebeforede-parture, or alternatively, they check thepressure when the tyre is warm, whichresults in incorrect readings, or theyputit at a level that does not take into ac-count the weight of the car - empty orfully loaded, it makes a difference.”

Properly inflated tyres are necessaryto keep the vehicle’s handling perform-ance at optimal levels, especially its cor-nering and braking abilities. “When atyre is under-inflated, the car’s weightis concentrated on the outside part of thetyre tread, increasing pressure on thetyre’s side-walls (the tyres’ shoulders aswe call them), rather than being spreadout evenly across the width of the tyre.”

Tyres may lose up to 0,2 bar air pres-sure in a three-month time period. Tyrepressure should be checked regularly -at least once a month.

Drivers should also make sure theydon’t set off on tyres that are in a badcondition.“Checkyourtyres’ treadwearbefore you depart. Is it still of sufficientdepth? Is the tread worn evenly? Alsocheckthetyre’ssidewalls foranydamag-es”, adds Hayward.

Stress strikes children tooLIKE grown-ups, children also suffer fromstress.

Here are some valuable tips for parents tohelp their children deal with stress:

) Listen to your child: Sometimes thebest thing parents can do is just to be thereto listen. Children want to feel independent. They don’t always need or want advice. Justknowing that they have someone to talk tocan be reassuring for them.

Talking about their problems can givethem a chance to hear them out loud, whichcan help them come up with the answer ontheir own.

) Offer encouragement to your chil-dren:

Letyourchildrenknowthatyouarealwaysthere for him / her. Offer encouragement andreassurance without being negative or judg-mental.

) Be a role model:If you are noticeably anxious, depressed,

or have a major melt-down during stressfultimes, then odds are that your children willhave the same reactions when they arestressed. How you cope with stress can alsoharm your credibility in your child’s eyes.

If they see you freaking out when you are

under stress, then they are not going to trustany suggestions or advice you give themabout stress.

) Provide stability to your child:Stability at home can help alleviate some

of the stress on children. Constant changescan add to the child’s stress level. Try to beconsistent in discipline and your daily rou-tines.

) Teach your child behaviour whichcan decrease stress:

There are things that can be done to helpalleviate stress. Children see, children do,thereforewalkyourtalkbybeingarolemodelfor your child.

You should stay positive, exercise and eathealthy foods, limit your caffeine consump-tion, andnotusedrugsoralcohol.Youshouldalso have a good support group and positivefriends as well as do fun activities when youare stressed like listening to music, readinga book, or going for a walk.

If the stress continues or worsens you mayneed to take your child to see a professional.

Stress can lead to drug and alcohol abuse, self injury, depression, or suicidal thoughts.

If you see any signs of this behaviour, seekprofessionalhelp foryourchild immediately.
