Leaf a legacy today“We would like to see all citizensliving in and around Stellenboschjoining in this vision of a MillionTrees and thus leaving a wonder-fullegacy.Toplantatreeistohavehope for the future,” said LydiaWillems, Project Manager of Leafa Legacy.

“Through the partnership withStellenbosch Municipality’s MillionTrees Project and the support ofWildlands’ “Trees for Life” activi-ties, Leaf a Legacy hopes to facilitatethe protection and restoration of ourvulnerablenaturalenvironmentandhelp restore dignity and hope to ourlocal community with greeningprojects.”

On 5 September a partnershipagreement between the StellenboschMunicipality, Wildlands Conserva-tion Trust and Leaf a Legacy wassigned in order to see the successfulimplementation of the “MillionTrees Project”.

Stellenbosch Municipality has ini-tiated the Million Trees Projectaimed at greening the communitiesthat fall within the municipal bound-aries and restoring the ecosystemswhich underwrite the health andlivelihood of these communities.

Wildlands and its partners havewell established mechanisms forsupporting and enabling the propa-gation, planting and care of indige-nous trees by disadvantaged andmarginalised community members,while Leaf a Legacy is developing acommunityprojectaimedat jobcrea-tion, greening the environment andcreating a culture of cooperationamongst the communities of Stellen-

bosch.This campaign will be implement-

ed with the help of a full-time teamof local community members, fund-ed by the Expanded Public WorksProgramme (EPWP). This team com-prises community facilitators whorecruit and nurture Tree-preneurs,a nursery team based at the BeltanaMunicipal nursery, a restorationteam working on the rivers runningthrough Stellenbosch Municipality(integrated with the activities of theteams currently working on theEersterivier) and an administrationand communications team workingat the Stellenbosch Eco-Centre.

Arbor Week celebratedThe Stellenbosch Municipality host-ed a blessing of the trees ceremonyin Church Street as part of their Ar-bor Week celebrations last week.

The theme for this year’s ArborWeek Programme which forms partof thenationalarborweekeventcele-brated between 1 and 7 Septemberevery year was “Change Lives byPlanting Trees”. The national themeis “Our Forests – Our Future”.

They restored the historical land-scape in Church Street in the centreof Stellenbosch town by plantingthree large oak trees kindly spon-sored by SMAC Art Gallery.

“We acknowledge the strategicpartnerships formed with the Mil-lion Trees Project stakeholdergroups, Greenpop, Reliance Com-post, Leaf a Legacy, Wildlands Con-servation Trust, Spier, Trees SA andthe 1 000 Trees Project,” said munici-pal spokesperson Vernon Bowers.

“The blessing of the trees signifies

the importanceweattachtoour treesand that we would like to ensure itssurvival. The municipality invitedbig corporations to get involved inthe Million Trees Project as part oftheir corporate social investment in-itiatives.”

The event was also a collective cel-ebration of the trees invested in thelocal area and once again highlightsthe Mayor’s Million Trees Project.

“We also want to create green jobsthrough the job creation initiativethrough the Trees for Life project inpartnership with the Wildlands Con-servation Trust.

“Lastly, planting trees not onlychanges lives but adds dignity to ourcommunities through the provisionof green spaces inspiring pride andownership in ones surroundings.”

Beat Around the Bosch unites runners andmusic lovers in one exciting eventRunnersandmusicloversuniteatthis year’s first combined sportand entertainment festival, BeatAround the Bosch, in Stellen-bosch on Saturday 28 September.

Beat Around the Boschcreatesa freshanduniqueapproachtoarunningandentertainment event asthe track will feature nu-merous live bands play-ing from six stages strate-gically placed around the7,95 km course plus a mu-sic festival at the finish.The original “sport-

tainment” event will ap-peal toall typesof runnersand thousands of musicloversandspectators.Thetheme for this year is 70’sRetroandparticipantsareencouraged to dress upwith wigs and sportinggear from that decade.The race, aimed to ac-

commodate both seriousandcasual runners, startsat 14:00 at StellenboschHigh School. The route isa scenic journey thatwinds through the histor-ic town and finishing atStellenbosch High Schoolwhere ample parking isavailable on the schoolgrounds, ensuring plentyof room for family andspectatorstocheeronpar-ticipants.
