ความลมเหลวของการเรยนภาษาองกฤษในประเทศไทยเนองมาจากอะไร?

ผเขยนขอสรปความลมเหลวของการเรยนภาษาองกฤษในประเทศไทยอยางงายๆ วา เนองมาจากสาเหตอยางเดยวคอ การสอนทผดวธ ไมถกกบธรรมชาตทแทจรงของคนไทย

และขอยนยนวา ผสอนเปนผสรางปญหานใหกบผเรยน ทำไมจงกลาวเชนน เพราะเทาทเจออยทกวน เจอผทจบวชาแพทยศาสตร เภสชศาสตร วศวกรรมศาสตร และวชาอนๆ ทคนหวดมมนสมองเยยมเทานนทจะเรยนได แตบคคลเหลานเปนจำนวนมากออนภาษาองกฤษ ทงๆ ทภาษาองกฤษนนเรยนงายกวาวชาทกลาวขางตนนเปนไหนๆ อยางนถาไมเปนความผดของ

ผสอนแลว จะเปนความผดของใคร

ททำกนอยสอนกนอยางไร?

เทาทเหนๆ กนอย ครผสอนมกจะอานหนงสอใหนกเรยนฟงหนงครงหรออานนำใหนกเรยนอานตาม หลงจากนนใหนกเรยนผลดกนอาน ถานกเรยนอานผดกแกใหแลวกผานไป และผานไปเรอยๆ จนจบบท พอถงชวโมงภาษาองกฤษชวโมงตอไป ครกสอนบทใหมในทำนองเดยวกน และสอนไปเรอยๆ จนกระทงจบเลม การทำอยางนไมวาจะทำกนสกกป ใหสอนหนงสอจบไปเปนรอยเปนพนเลม ผเรยนกไมมทางทจะพดภาษาองกฤษได อกประการหนงคอ นำเอาหนงสอไวยากรณองกฤษมาสอน แลวใหทำแบบฝกหด การสอนแบบนไมสามารถชวยใหผเรยนพดภาษาองกฤษไดเชนเดยวกน

เราตองสอนภาษาองกฤษกนอยางไร? ขอใหเราเขาใจความจรงทเปนธรรมชาตของมนษยเสยกอน เมอเดก

อายยางเขา 2 ขวบ ไมวาจะเปนชาตใด ภาษาใด เดกจะพดภาษาของตนเองได เมอสำรวจความรของเดกเกยวกบศพทนนแลวปรากฏวา จะรศพทไมถงหนงรอยคำ แตเดกรศพทกคำกสามารถนำศพทเหลานนมาพดไดหมดทกคำ คนองกฤษเองทเปนผใหญและมการศกษาด จะรศพทภาษาองกฤษหลายพนคำ

แตศพททเขาใชพดกนจรงๆ นน มเพยงประมาณ 500 คำ ซงผจบมธยมของประเทศไทยจะรศพทเหลานทงหมด

เราพอสรปเอาไดวา การทคนไทยเรยนจบมธยมตน มธยมปลาย หรอปรญญาตรแลว พดภาษาองกฤษไมไดนน ไมใชเปนเพราะไมรศพท แตเปนเพราะไมสามารถนำศพททรนนไปแตงประโยคพดได

ถาเรานำคนไทยคนหนงทมความรระดบปรญญาตร ซงอาจจะรศพทประมาณ 2,000 คำ แตยงพดภาษาองกฤษไมได มาใหทองศพทเพมเตมจนจำศพทไดถง 10,000 คำ พรอมกบสอนใหมความรไวยากรณองกฤษเพมเตมขนอก กจะไมทำใหคนๆ นนพดภาษาองกฤษได นอกเสยจากวาจะฝกใหมทกษะในดานการพดเสยกอน

สอนตามธรรมชาตของมนษย

เราพอสรปไดวาการสอนภาษาองกฤษใหไดผลนน จะตองหนเขาหาธรรมชาต ซงตามธรรมชาตแลว ไมวาจะเปนชาตใด ภาษาใด คนในชาตนนจะพดภาษาของตนได กอนทจะเรยนอาน เรยนเขยน เมอเราจะสอนภาษาองกฤษ เราจะตองสอนใหผเรยนพดไดเสยกอนแลวจงจะใหเรยนอาน เรยนเขยน

ความจรงมอยวา ถาใครพดภาษาอะไรไมได คนๆ นนจะอานภาษานนไมรเรอง เชนคนไทยทไมมความรภาษาบาล กสามารถอาน อตป โส ภควา อรห สมมา สมพทโธ ได แตกไมทราบวาหมายถงอะไร ภาษาองกฤษกเชนเดยวกน ถาเราไมสามารถสอนใหผเรยนพดภาษาองกฤษได แตไปสอนอานเสยกอน มนเปนการผดธรรมชาต ผเรยนจะอานไมรเรอง และจะรเรองวาทอานนนหมายถงอะไร กตอเมอผสอนแปลใหฟง แตการสอนใหหดอานพรอมกบการแปลใหฟงนจะไมชวยใหพดภาษาองกฤษได ดงไดกลาวมาแลวในตอนตน

การสอนเขยนกเหมอนกน ถาเราสอนใหผเรยน เรยนเขยนกอนทจะพดได ผเรยนจะทำไดกแตเพยงลอกประโยค ไมสามารถเขยนไดตามทตองการจะเขยน

ผเขยนขอยนยนวา การสอนภาษาองกฤษทถกตองนน จะตองสอนใหผเรยนพดไดเสยกอน กอนทจะสอนอานสอนเขยน

เมอไหรผเรยนจะพดภาษาองกฤษได ขอใหผเรยนทำความเขาใจบางอยางเสยกอน คนไทยแทบจะทงนนท

เรยนภาษาองกฤษ นกวาตนจะพดภาษาองกฤษได กตอเมอรศพทภาษาองกฤษมากๆ และตองเรยนหนงสอจบไปหลายๆ เลม หรอตองใชเวลาเรยนอยหลายๆ ป คนบางคนใหคำแนะนำเพอน หรอครบางคนใหคำแนะนำนกเรยนวา หนงสอเลมนนเลมนด หรอชดนนชดนด ถาเรยนจบทงเลมหรอทงชด รบรองวาพดภาษาองกฤษไดแนๆ ผเขยนขอยนยนวา การเขาใจอยางน หรอการใหคำแนะนำกนอยางนเปนสงทผด

การทเราพดภาษาไทยไดนน ไมไดหมายความวาเรารศพทภาษาไทยทกคำ หรอเมอเทยบกบศพทภาษาไทยทเราร กบทมอยในพจนานกรมทงหมดจะเหนวาเรารศพทภาษาไทยนอยมาก แตในภาษาไทยนน เรารศพทกคำเราสามารถนำศพทเหลานนมาแตงเปนประโยคพด และเขยนไดทกๆ คำทเราร

ภาษาองกฤษกควรจะเปนเชนนน ศพทใน Dictionary ของมหาวทยาลย Oxford ฉบบใหญสดมอยถง 414,826 คำ เราไมจำเปนทจะตองรศพทเหลานนหมดจงจะพดภาษาองกฤษได แตเรารศพทกคำเราจะตองสามารถนำศพทเหลานนมาแตงประโยค พดและเขยนใหได

ฉะนนจงอยารอรอกตอไป อยารอวาตองใชเวลาเรยนหลายๆ ป อยารอวาตองรศพทมากๆ อยารอวาตองเรยนหนงสอใหจบไปหลายๆ เลม จงจะพดหรอเขยนได

แตในชวโมงนทานเรยนศพทไดกคำ สมมตวาสก 20 คำ ทานกจะตองสามารถนำศพทเหลานนมาแตงประโยคพด และเขยนใหได

ทโรงเรยนภาษาองกฤษดวงแกวเราวางหลกไววา จะฝกใหผเรยนตอบคำถามไดอยางคลองแคลว ภายในเวลาเพยง 5 นาท ไมวาผเรยนจะมพนความรเดมเปนอยางไร หรอแมกระทงผทไมเคยเรยนภาษาองกฤษมากอนเลย และการสอนตอไปนนจะเรมจากระดบทผเรยนสามารถตอบคำถามระดบนนไดอยางคลองแคลวนนเอง

ถาใครมความสงสยวาจะเปนไปไดหรอไม กสามารถไปทดลองไดโดยไมตองเสยเงน วาภายในเวลาเพยง 5 นาท ตนจะสามารถตอบคำถามเปนภาษาองกฤษไดอยางคลองแคลวหรอไม? ไมวาจะมพนความรเดมเปนอยางไร

หรอคร-อาจารยสอนภาษาองกฤษทานใดอยากไดหลกอนนเพอนำไปใชสอนนกเรยน กสามารถไปขอคำแนะนำ ทโรงเรยนภาษาองกฤษดวงแกวไดเชนกน

สงทจะตองแกไข

การทจะแกไขจดบกพรองของนกเรยนเพอใหเรยนแลวเกงภาษาองกฤษ และนำไปใชการไดดนน จะตองแกตรงวธเรยนและวธสอน และตำราทใชในการเรยนการสอน นกเรยนไทยเมอเรยนภาษาองกฤษอยบทใดบทหนง เมอเหนวาตนอานไดแปลได กมกจะรบขนบทใหม เพราะเขาใจวาเมอขนบทใหมแลวตนจะไดเรยนสงใหมๆ หรอจะไดรศพทเพมขนมากอก และการเรยนจะไดกาวหนาเรว ผเขยนขอแนะนำวา การทำอยางนนไมถกตอง นกเรยนควรจะขนบทใหม หรอครจะใหนกเรยนขนบทใหม กตอเมอนกเรยนสามารถพดและเขยนบทนนๆ ไดอยางคลองแคลวจรงจงเสยกอน

ตามทไดกลาวมาแลวในตอนตน การสอนนนครผสอนมกจะอานหนงสอใหนกเรยนฟง หรออานนำใหนกเรยนอานตามแลวกแปลใหนกเรยนฟง จากนนกใหนกเรยนผลดกนอาน ถาใครอานผดกแกให แลวใหผานไป และผานไปเรอยๆ จนกระทงจบเลม เมอสอนกนอยางน ขอใหคดดวานกเรยนจะเกงภาษาไดอยางไร จงขอใหเลกเสย อยางนอยใหคำนงวา จะตองสอนเพอคณภาพไมใชปรมาณ ถาครสอนเดกตามวธการขางตน จนจบหนงสอไปหนงเลม สมมตวามอย 50 บท ใชเวลาหนงปการศกษา จะไมมประโยชนเลย แตถาครสอนซำแลวซำอก จนกระทงนกเรยนสามารถพด-อาน-เขยน บทนนๆ ไดจรงจงเสยกอน จงจะสอนบทตอไป และเมอสนปการศกษา ปรากฏวาสอนไดเพยง 5 บท กยงดกวาสอนไปจนจบเลม 50 บท แตนกเรยนไมรเรองเลย

ขอใหครผสอนนกถงหลกความจรงทวา ถาเราสอนใหเดกรองเพลง โดยใหเดกรองเพลงไปทละเพลง ถง 10 เพลง เดกกไมสามารถรองเพลงใดเพลงหนงได แตถาเราใหเดกรองเพลงใดเพลงหนงอย 10 ครง เดกกจะรองเพลงนนไดแนๆ

บทบาทของตำราทใชเรยนอยในปจจบน

ตำราทใชเรยนอยในประเทศไทยนน สวนมากแตงโดยคนองกฤษหรออเมรกน ทมประสบการณกบการสอนภาษาองกฤษกบผทพดภาษาองกฤษได

แลว ซงอาจจะเปนคนองกฤษหรออเมรกาเอง หรอคนตางชาตทอยในองกฤษ อเมรกา หรอชาตทใชภาษาองกฤษเปนภาษาราชการ ซงนกแตงตำราเหลานนจะไมรสภาพทแทจรงของนกเรยนไทยไดวา นกเรยนไทยจะตองมวธสอนและตำราทแตกตางจากทใชอยในองกฤษหรออเมรกา หรอประเทศอนๆ ทใชภาษาองกฤษเปนภาษาราชการ แตเราจะโทษนกแตงตำราเหลานนไมได เพราะเขาไมไดแตงตำราเหลานขนเพอใหเราใช เราเปนฝายเอาตำราของเขามาใชเองตางหาก ผเขยนขอยนยนอกครงหนงวา ตำราเหลานไมถกกบธรรมชาตของคนไทยเปนอยางยง

สวนตำราทแตงโดยทานผรทเปนชาวไทย ทานกแตงเหมอนกบทพวกฝรงแตง และมหลายทานทเขยนไปตามความรททานม มากกวาทจะเขยนเพอใหนกเรยนเรยนสงทตองเรยนหรอควรจะเรยน

จดมงหมายของหนงสอ “The New Road” ตำราเรยนภาษาองกฤษทมอยในประเทศไทย เหมอนกบตำราเรยน

ทวๆ ไปในองกฤษ อเมรกา และประเทศอนๆ ทใชภาษาองกฤษ เขยนเปนประโยคบอกเลา อาจจะมประโยคคำถามบางแตกนอย เมอรปหนงสอเปนอยางน ครทสอนกใหนกเรยนอานผานๆ ไป ซงการกระทำดงน โดยธรรมชาตแลวจะไมชวยใหนกเรยนจำได วธทจะใหนกเรยนจำไดนน กตองใหนกเรยนอานแตละประโยคหลายๆ ครง เมอนกเรยนอานไดคลองดแลว ผสอนกตองตงเปนประโยคคำถาม เพอใหนกเรยนตอบ เปนการใหนกเรยนมความจำในสงทไดเรยนและเปนการใหนกเรยนฝกพดไปในตว แตเพราะหนงสอทใชสอนน สวนมากเปนประโยคบอกเลา จงเปนการยากสำหรบครผสอนทจะตงคำถามเพอทจะถามใหนกเรยนตอบ

คนไทยมโอกาสทจะพดภาษาองกฤษนอยมาก โดยเฉพาะแถบตางจงหวดแลวแทบจะไมมโอกาสเลย และเพราะคนไทยไมคอยมโอกาสพดภาษาองกฤษ การทเอาหนงสอสอนใหอานผานๆ ไป จะไมชวยใหผเรยนพดภาษาองกฤษไดเลย

ผเขยนไดเขยนหนงสอ “The New Road” ขน เพอแกปญหาทงหมดทไดกลาวมาแลว โดยมความปรารถนาอยางแรงกลาทจะพฒนาการศกษาภาษาองกฤษในประเทศไทย ไมใหการศกษาภาษาองกฤษในประเทศไทยสญเปลาเหมอนอยางทเปนอยในปจจบน คอเรยนหลายๆ ปแลวแตใชการไมได

ตามทไดกลาวไวแลวในตอนตน เพอใหนกเรยนพดภาษาองกฤษได ครผสอนจะตองตงคำถามใหนกเรยนตอบใหมากทสด ปญหามอยวาครจะเอาอะไรมาถาม และเพอใหครมความคลองตวในการตงประโยคคำถามใหนกเรยนตอบ หนงสอ “The New Road” จงเขยนขนมาในรปของถามตอบแทบจะทงสน เปนการแกปญหาใหกบครผสอน ทไมมความคลองตวในการตงคำถามใหนกเรยนตอบโดยสนเชง

การสอนตามหนงสอ The New Road

สำหรบผทไมเคยเรยนภาษาองกฤษมาเลย ใหทำตามขนตอนดงน

1. สอนใหนกเรยนอาน A-Z ใหคลอง โดยใหอานครงละ 3 ตว ตอนแรกใหอาน A-B-C จนอานไดคลอง แลวใหอาน D-E-F จนคลองอก จากนนใหกลบมาอาน 6 ตวรวด A-B-C-D-E-F จนกระทงคลองดอก แลวจงใหตอ G-H-I จนคลอง แลวจงใหกลบมาอาน 9 ตวรวด A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-I จนคลองอก ทำไปอยางนจนถง Z

2. ใหนกเรยนคด A-Z ทงตวใหญและเลก อยางละ 10 บรรทด (พยายามใหเขยนใหตดๆ กน จะไดเขยนไดมากๆ)

3. ใหเรมสอนบทเรยนท 1 ประโยคแรกใหนกเรยนสะกดทกคำใหคลอง แลวจงใหอานทงประโยค This is a man. สก 20-30 ครง จนคลองด แลวไปสอนประโยคท 2 เรมดวยสะกดตว woman จนคลอง จากนนใหอานประโยค This is a woman. สก 20-30 ครงอก กอนจะสอนใหอานประโยคท 3 กจะตองใหอาน 2 ประโยคทเรยนมาใหคลองเสยกอน เพอปองกนการเรยนหนาลมหลง การสอนประโยคตอๆ ไป กใหทำในทำนองเดยวกน เชนในประโยคท 3 ตอนแรกใหสะกดคำ boy กอน แลวจงใหอานทงประโยค ขอสำคญทสดคออยาสอนประโยคใหมให จนกวานกเรยนจะสามารถอานทกๆ ประโยคตงแตตนมาจนคลองเสยกอน เชนเมอสอนมาถงประโยคท 9 แลว จะตองใหนกเรยนอานทวนมาตงแตประโยคท 1 ถง 9 ใหคลองเสยกอน จงจะสอนประโยคท 10 ให

4. จากนนกมาถงตอน ถาม-ตอบ ใหนกเรยนอานเฉพาะคำตอบ Yes, this is a man. สก 10 ครง แลวจงถามใหนกเรยนอานเฉพาะคำตอบ ขอละ 5 ครงจนถงขอท 20 แลวใหนกเรยนอานเฉพาะคำตอบขอท 21 No, this is not a man. สก 10 ครง จากนนถามใหตอบขอละ 5 ครงอก ไปจนถงขอสดทาย

5. บอกใหนกเรยนปดหนงสอ แลวถามใหนกเรยนตอบ ตอนนจะพสจนถงความสามารถของผสอน วาจะสอนไดผลขนาดไหน ในการเขยนหนงสอชดน ผเขยนไดวางแนวไววา ทนททนกเรยนสามารถตอบคำถามขอหนงได กจะสามารถตอบคำถามทำนองเดยวกนไดหมดทกขอ ขอแนะนำสำหรบผสอนคอ ใหถามเฉพาะขอท 1 ใหนกเรยนตอบ สกกครงกได จนกระทงนกเรยนตอบไดคลองจรงๆ แลว จงเปลยนคำถามเปนขอตอไป และใหถามขอละครงเดยวโดยไมตองซำ ไปจนถงขอท 20 ถานกเรยนเกดตอบขอใดขอหนงไมได ใหผสอนถอวา เปนความผดของตนไมใชของผเรยน

พอถงขอท 21 เปนขอทเรมตอบปฏเสธ สงนเปนของใหมสำหรบนกเรยน จงใหตงหลกใหม โดยการถามใหตอบขอนหลายๆ ครง จนตอบไดคลองอก แลวจงเปลยนไปเปนขอท 22 ถงขอท 40 และถามใหตอบรวดเดยวโดยไมตองซำ อยางตอนตน

ในการสอนบทตอๆ ไป จะเหนวานกเรยนตอบไดโดยงาย ตามหลกการทวางไววา ทนททเรยนภาษาองกฤษ ผเรยนจะตองสามารถพดไดตามทไดเรยนมา โดยไมตองรอวา จะตองเรยนไปนานๆ และรศพทมากๆ เสยกอน จงจะพดได

6. เรมสอนบทเรยนท 2 ดวยการบอกใหนกเรยนทราบความหมายของคำวา “What” แปลวา “อะไร” พรอมกบถามและตอบเปนตวอยางใหนกเรยนฟง ดวยการทำประกอบกบความจรง เชน หยบหนงสอขนมา ถามวา What is this? แลวตอบวา This is a book. ถามตอบเชนนหลายๆ ครง จากนนเอามอจบโตะ เกาอ หยบปากกาขนมา แลวทำในทำนองเดยวกน เมอเหนวานกเรยนเขาใจดแลว จงเรมถามขอท 1 ในบทเรยนท 2 ใหนกเรยนตอบ ในตอนแรกๆ นกเรยนจะสบสนกบการ “ใช” หรอ “ไมใช” คำ “Yes” เรมตนจากการถามใหตอบเฉพาะขอท 1 ประมาณ 5-10 ครง เมอนกเรยนตอบไดจนคลองแลว จงถามขอตอไปโดยไมตองซำ

7. ในบทเรยนท 3 และบทตอๆ ไป ใหทำดงนคอ

7.1 อานเฉพาะศพทใหมในบทนนๆ ใหนกเรยนฟงหลายๆ ครง อาจจะบอกคำแปลควบคกนไปดวยกได จากนนใหนกเรยนอานประโยค ถาสอนในชนเรยนทมเดกหลายคน กใหอานคนละประโยค สลบกนไปเรอยๆ หลายๆ เทยว ขอสำคญคอ อยาอานใหนกเรยนฟงทงประโยค แลวใหนกเรยนอานตาม ถาทำอยางนนกเรยนจะไมไดอาน แตจะวาตาม จะไมทำใหนกเรยนพฒนาการอานเลย ขณะทใหนกเรยนหดอานนน ถานกเรยนเกดอานตวใดไมออก หรออานผด อยารบบอกคำอานใหทนท ใหนกเรยนสะกดตวด เมอเหนวานกเรยนอานไมออก หรออานไมถกจรงๆ จงจะบอกคำอานให วธนจะชวยใหนกเรยนจำไดดขน

7.2 เมอนกเรยนอานไดดแลว กบอกใหปดหนงสอ แลวเรมสอนตรงคำถามคำตอบ และกสามารถถามใหนกเรยนตอบไดทนท ตอนนนกเรยนจะตอบไดคลอง แตอาจจะมบางคนเกดการไขวเขวทจะตอบรบและปฏเสธสลบกน กใหเปลยนมาถามใหตอบเฉพาะรบไปกอน แลวกลบมาถามใหม ใหตอบเฉพาะปฏเสธ

สาหรบผทเคยเรยนภาษาองกฤษมาแลว

จะสอนไดงายมาก จดสำคญมอยอยางเดยว คอจะเรมตนตรงไหนเทานน ทสำคญทสดคอ อยาเรมจากบททนกเรยนพออานออกแปลได แตใหทดสอบดวานกเรยนสามารถตอบคำถามระดบไหนได และใหเรมสอนในระดบนน

แตถาเรามองในแงหนง การทเราจะเรมสอนตงแตตน กบผทเรยนมาแลว ขอใหผเรยนเขาใจเสยใหมวา การทำอยางนนไมใชเปนการทำใหเสยเวลาเลย แตเปนการเปดศกราชใหมทดทสด หากเรมตนใหมกบบทเรยนท 1 เมออาจารยผสอนตงคำถามและผเรยนสามารถตอบไดทนท ใชเวลาไมนานกจบเลม หรอมาถงระดบความรจรงๆ ของผเรยน ดกวาทเรมเรยนในบทสงๆ แตตอบไดไมคลอง จนกระทงอาจารยผสอนตองกลบไปเรมตนใหม จะทำใหใชเวลามากกวาเรมสอนมาตงแตตน

การเรมตนคอ ใหนกเรยนอานออกสยง สวนทเปน Reading 3-5 เทยว จากนนใหอาน ขอทหนง-ถามตอบประมาณ 5-10 ครง เมอเหนวา

เมอนกเรยนอานขอนหลายๆ เทยว กจะจำโครงสรางได แลวกดประโยคแรกของขอท 2 โดยมไดอานออกเสยง ปรากฏวา เปน Is the woman in the kitchen? กสามารถตงคำถามและตอบไดทนทเปน

และใหทำขอท 3 กบขอตอไปเชนเดยวกน จะเหนวานกเรยนสามารถพดไดคลอง เทากบเปนการพสจนวา ตนสามารถพดภาษาองกฤษไดทนททเรมเรยน

ในกรณทมนกเรยนหลายคน เชนสอนนกเรยนในชน กสามารถใหนกเรยนทงหมดทำอยางนพรอมกนได เพยงแตใหนกเรยนเวนชวง ตามกลมของคำ เหมอนอยางทขดเสนใตไวตามขางบนน

จากนนใหผสอนถามใหนกเรยนตอบ เพอพฒนาการฟงกบการพดอกระดบหนง ถาสอนนกเรยนคนเดยว หรอนอยคนใหถามใหตอบทละคนถาสอนในชนเรยน ใหนกเรยนตอบพรอมกนทงชนได

การสอนเขยน

การทเราใหนกเรยนอานหลายๆ ครงและถามใหตอบอยางคลองแคลว ทำใหนกเรยนจำศพทตางๆ ไดหมดและกสามารถพดไดตามทไดเรยนมา แต

นกเรยนยงเขยนไมได ฉะนนกอนทจะเรมสอนบทตอไป ใหครผสอนบอกใหเดกลอกบทเรยนทเรยนมาลงในสมด หลงจากนนใหนกเรยนดงศพทตวทพมพดวยตวหนาออกมาเขยนคำละอยางนอย 20 ครง เพอไมใหเสยเวลาในการสอนควรจะใหนกเรยนทำเปนการบาน ถาเดกไมไดทำเปนการบานกตองใหทำในหองเรยน แตขอทสำคญตองใหนกเรยนทำใหไดเสยกอน กอนทจะขนบทเรยนใหม

และสำหรบแบบฝกหดนน พยายามใหนกเรยนทำเปนการบานเชนกน แตถานกเรยนไมทำมา กตองใหทำในหองเรยน และตองใหทำเสยกอน กอนทจะขนบทเรยนใหม

หนงสอ “The New Road” เนนหนกไปในทางใหรจกใชศพทและหลกของภาษา จดมงหมายเพอใหนกเรยนไดฝกอาน-พด-เขยน และไดเรยนหลกของภาษาควบคกนไป ในการตอบใหนกเรยนตอบทงรบและปฏเสธ โดยไมตองคำนงถงหลกความจรงทวาคำตอบนนควรจะเปนคำตอบรบหรอปฏเสธ นอกจากบางประโยคทตอบอยางใดอยางหนงไมไดเทานน ซงในประโยคเชนน ในหนงสอเลมนจะไมใหคำตอบไว

ขอแนะนำเพมเตม อยาแปลใหนกเรยนฟง

ขอบกพรองอยางมากในการเรยนการสอนภาษาองกฤษ คอ เมอนกเรยนอานภาษาองกฤษแลว แทนทจะพยายามทำความเขาใจทเปนภาษาองกฤษ กลบพยายามแปลทอานนนเปนภาษาไทย แลวทำความเขาใจ สำหรบครผสอนนน เมออานไปแทนทจะใหนกเรยนเขาใจรปประโยคเอาเอง หรอเมอเหนนกเรยนไมเขาใจกอานซำอกครงหนง หรอหลายๆ ครง จนกระทงนกเรยนเขาใจรปประโยค ครกรบแปลเปนภาษาไทยทนทแลวกผานไป

ผเขยนขอยนยนวา ถายงทำกนอยอยางน รบรองไดวาผเรยนจะไมมโอกาสไดเกงภาษาองกฤษแนๆ

เวลาเราอานภาษาไทยหรอไดยนใครพดภาษาไทย เรากเขาใจทนทโดย ไมตองแปลเปนภาษาอน แลวจงจะรและเขาใจเรอง

ไทย นอกจากวาเราไมทราบศพทนน ขอบเขตของการพดการเขาใจ ไมวาจะเปนภาษาของใคร อยทจะพดได

อานรเรองหรอฟงแลวเขาใจ กเฉพาะศพททเรารความหมายเทานน ทานลองชไปทหนาของใครสกคนแลวพดวา “สเจาเปนเพยงมณฑกนอย” ดซวาเขาจะเขาใจหรอเปลา หรอชไปทอะไรกได แลวพดกบชาวองกฤษวา “Ecce” ผเขยนเชอแนวาชาวองกฤษกวา 90% ไมทราบวาทานหมายถงอะไร (ecce (เอคเช) แปลวา ดนน)

ผเขยนไมไดหมายความวา ทานจะตองรศพทภาษาองกฤษทงหมดทอาน หรอไดยนใครพด แตในประโยคททานรศพททกๆ ตว ในประโยคนนทานกจะตองเขาใจทนท โดยไมตองแปลกลบมาเปนภาษาไทย เมอไดอานหรอไดยนใครพด

ขอใหเราเลกแปลกนเสยท ประโยคใดทอานแลวไมเขาใจ ขอใหอานซำๆ หลายๆ ครง จนกระทงเขาใจ ถาไมรศพทกใหหาคำแปลของศพทนน เมออานหลายๆ ครงแลวถาไมเขาใจจรงๆ กใหทงเสย

เชนสมมตวาเราเรยนหนงสอ “The New Road” บทเรยนท 35 อานแลวไมเขาใจ ถาเราใหใครแปลใหฟงจนจบบทกไมมประโยชนเราจงควรทงเสย แลวหนไปจบบททงายกวาน ชนดทอานแลวเขาใจทนท

ผเขยนขอรบรองวาถาใครเรมอานหนงสอ “The New Road” ไปตงแต บทท 1 กจะสามารถอานตอไปไดรเรองดโดยไมตองแปลจนกระทงถงบทสดทายของหนงสอชดน

เรามกจะไดยนใครตอใครพดวา “เดกคนนออนภาษาองกฤษมาก เปนเพราะแกขเกยจทองศพท” ผพดลมนกไปวา กทเดกคนนนพดภาษาไทยไดนน ไมเคยเหนแกทองศพทภาษาไทยเลย

การทครอาจารย หรอใครๆ นกวา นกเรยนจะเกงภาษาองกฤษได กตอเมอรศพทมากๆ และจะใหรศพทมากกมอยวธเดยว คอใหทองศพท ผเขยนขอพดวาการใหเรยนภาษาองกฤษแบบนเปนวธการทผดธรรมชาต จงขอแนะนำผสอนวา “อยาบงคบ หรอแมกระทงแนะนำใหนกเรยนทองศพท” วธทจะทำใหนกเรยนเกงภาษาองกฤษนน ขอแนะนำใหทำดงน

1. เมอสอนนกเรยน พยายามถามเปนประโยค ใหนกเรยนตอบซำแลวซำอก จนกระทงนกเรยนสามารถตอบไดอยางคลองแคลว

2. เมอนกเรยนไมอยกบคร ใหเอาหนงสอขนมาอาน และใหอานแบบธรรมชาต อานซำแลวซำอก ยงมากครงยงดโดยมตองคำนงถงคำแปล ใหมนซมซาบและเขาใจความหมายเองโดยอตโนมต แลวสกวนหนง กจะไปถงจดหมายปลายทาง เมอนกเรยนมความรสกตอภาษาองกฤษวาเขาใจและรเรอง มนเหมอนกบมนเปนภาษาของตนเอง

อกอยางหนงลองถามนกเรยนวา “แบหลา” แปลวาอะไร ถานกเรยนไมทราบคำแปล เขยนกลอนนใหอาน

“ฉวยควาไดกรชของพยา จะแบหลาชวนใหบรรลย” แลวถามใหม คราวนนกเรยนจะบอกคำแปลไดถก จากตวอยางทงสองน จะเหนวาการใหนกเรยนอานทงประโยค จะชวย

ใหนกเรยนเขาใจศพทไดด และจะจำความหมายไดอยางแมนยำ

แตอยาลมใหนกเรยนหดเขยน ตามวธทไดแนะไวดวย

อยาบงคบใหนกเรยนทองประโยคไปพด

เรามกจะไดยนใครตอใครพดวา การเรยนภาษาองกฤษในประเทศไทย เรยนเทาไหรกพดไมได บางคนถงกบพดวา “เรยนไปทำไม เรยนแลวพดไมได” คร-อาจารยผสอนภาษาองกฤษบางทาน ไดยนคำพดชนดนเขาบอยๆ เกด “ฟต” ขนมา มความตงใจทจะสอนศษยของตนใหพดใหได แตไมทราบวาจะทำอยางไรด จงเรมตนดวยวธพยายามใหนกเรยนพด จดประโยคคำพดใหนกเรยนไปทอง แลวใหมาหดพดในหองเรยน สถาบนภาษาบางสถาบนถงกบพมพหนงสอขนมาหรออดเปน “โรเนยว” รปประโยคใหนกเรยนนำไปทอง

การทำอยางนมนผดธรรมชาตจรงๆ ครบ ไมมชาตใด ภาษาใด ทเขาเรยนพดภาษาโดยการทองประโยคไปพดกนหรอก การทใครตอใครพดอยทกวนน เพราะสามารถสรางประโยคพดเอาเองทงนน

เมอคร-อาจารยใหนกเรยนทองประโยคภาษาองกฤษ ผทองจะไดประสบการณวากวาจะจำไดสกประโยค มนยากแสนยาก และเมอทองไดแลว กไมทราบวาเมอไหรจะมโอกาสไดใช เวลาจะพดกบฝรงกมวแตนกถงประโยค

ททองมา แลวกพดไมออก เพราะประโยคนนไมตรงกบทตองการจะพด ผเขยนขอยนยนวา วธสอนใหนกเรยนพดภาษาองกฤษได ไมใชดวย

การใหนกเรยนทองประโยคไปพด แตดวยการสอนใหนกเรยนสามารถนำศพททรมาแตงประโยคพดไดตามทตองการจะพด หากทำดงนได ความรภาษาองกฤษของนกเรยน กมาถงระดบเดยวกบภาษาไทย คอรภาษาองกฤษเหมอนกบรภาษาไทย ในภาษาไทยนน นกเรยนไมไดรศพทหมดทกคำ หากรกคำ กสามารถนำมาแตงประโยคพดได เมอเปนภาษาองกฤษกทำนองเดยวกน คอรกคำ กสามารถนำมาแตงเปนประโยคพดไดทกคำเชนกน

อยาสอนใหเทยบอกษรองกฤษกบอกษรไทย

โรงเรยนภาษาองกฤษดวงแกวเจอกบปญหาทนกเรยนทเรมเรยนตงแตระดบ A-B มกจะถามบอยๆ วา ทำไมทางโรงเรยน ไมสอนใหมการเทยบตวอกษรกบภาษาไทย เชน A เทากบ เอ หรอ แอ, B เทากบ บ, C เทากบ ซ

มนษยเราไมวาจะเปนชาตใด ภาษาใด ยอมมธรรมชาตเหมอนกน คนทกชาตรบประทานอาหารทางปาก ไมมคนของชาตไหนรบประทานอาหารทางห คนทกชาตฟงเสยงกบห ไมมคนชาตไหนฟงเสยงกบจมก

การทมนษยไมวาชาตใดอาปาก แลวสงเสยงออกมานน ยอมจะมเสยงเหมอนกน เพยงแตอาจจะเพยนกนไปบาง ตอมามนษยชาตตางๆ ไดคดเครองหมายหรอทเรยกวาสญลกษณ ขนมาใชแทนเสยงทตนเปลงออกมา ความยงยากเรมจากตรงน เพราะตางคนตางคดกน การเรยนตวอกษรของภาษาใดคอ การเรยนสญลกษณทคนในชาตนนคดขนแทนเสยงทเขาใชปากทำออกมาเทานนเอง

เชนทกชาตจะตองมเสยง “ก” ซงอาจจะออกเสยงเปน กอ กะ เกอะ เก หรออะไรกแลวแต ซงแตละชาตคดสญลกษณแตกตางกน เชน ไทย เปน ก แขมร เปน สนสกฤต เปน ทมฬ เปน สงหล เปน ลาว เปนกกก พมา เปน ก กรก เปนกกรสเซย เปน ฮบร เปน ถาเราไปเรยนภาษาของพวกเอสกโมเรากเพยงไปดวา เขาใชอะไรเปนสญลกษณของเสยง ก เทานน

ถาครไปสอนนกเรยน ใหเทยบเสยงตวอกษรของภาษาทเรยน กบตวอกษรไทยแลว เทากบไปสอนสงทไมจำเปน ไปสอนสงทนกเรยนทราบอยแลวใหเกดความงงงวย ไปสอนสงทไมมประโยชน ถงแมจะไมเปนพษเปนภย แตกทำใหเสยเวลา

อยาสอนใหผสมตว

อกษรไทยเปนลกหลานของอกษรสนสกฤต ซงเปนอกษรในกลมทมสระและการสะกด ออกเสยงอยางตายตว ในภาษาสนสกฤตนนมการผสมสระกบพยญชนะเปนคำได 709 คำ ถาใครอาน 709 คำนได กจะสามารถอานภาษาสนสกฤตไดหมด เมอเราเรยนภาษาองกฤษ เรากตองการใหทำแบบภาษาไทย คอสอนใหอานและเขยนดวยการเอาตวอกษรมาผสมกน

โรงเรยนภาษาองกฤษดวงแกวเจอปญหานมาก คอเจอปญหาทนกเรยนตำหนวาเราไมสอนใหเขาผสมตว... ขอบอกตรงๆ วา การสอนแบบน ในตอนแรกๆ อาจจะรสกวานกเรยนจะเรยนไดเรว แตพอเรยนไป สอนไป นานๆ เขา จะตระหนกโดยตนเองวาไมเรยนไมสอนเลยจะดกวา
