baankonsultant. Hy kan gekontak word:www.jedidiah.org.za of T/F 021 873 0262 of opFacebook by “Jy die Entrepreneur.”

Attorneys to draft wills for freeIt has become tradition over the past fewyears that members of the public will be ableto have a basic will drafted by an attorneyfree of charge as part of National Wills Weekform 15 to 19 September.

Law firms throughout the country are par-ticipating in the National Wills Weekproject.

“By ensuring that you have a valid will, you as the testator, can protect the interestsof your loved ones and ensure that there isno delay in settling your estate after yourdeath,” Law Society of South Africa (LSSA)co-chairpersons, Ettienne Barnard and MaxBoqwana, said in a statement.

“It also ensures that your executor will actaccording to your wishes as set out in yourwill.”

A valid will allows to state who should in-herit assets and property, to appoint an exec-utor of choice and also a guardian for minorchildren.

Persons who have been recently divorcedor widowed, or those who are cohabitatingwith their partners, should consider havinga will drafted. If you have been cohabitatingwith your partner, it is advisable to have awill to ensure that there are not competingclaims on your estate.

Similarly, unmarried persons, particular-

ly those who may have a number of peoplethat depend on them financially shouldensure they have a will in place, as severalpeople could make a claim on their estates.

During Wills Week, attorneys participat-ing in the initiative will display posterswith their contact details so the public canmake appointments with attorneys in theirarea.

A practising attorney has the necessaryknowledge and expertise to ensure that awill is valid by complying with all the legalrequirements in the Wills Act and also thatit complies with your wishes.

An attorney can also give advice regard-ing any problem which may arise with awill and assist your executor.

Often a will is not valid because theperson who drafts it does not have the nec-essary legal knowledge to ensure that theall the legal requirements of the Wills Actare met.

These include the fact that the will mustbe in writing, it must be signed by the testa-tor in the presence of at least two competentwitnesses, and also signed by the witnesses.

Dying without leaving a valid will, theassets will be distributed according to theprovisions of the Intestate Succession Act.

These provisions are generally fair andensure that the possessions are transferredto the spouse and children, siblings, parents and if required to the extendedfamily in terms of degrees of relationships.

Problems may arise if one dies withoutleaving a will such as assets may not be leftto the person of choice or there could beextra and unnecessary costs to name a few.

The contact details of all participatingattorneys can be accessed on the LSSAwebsite at www.LSSA.org.za or bycontacting the relevant provincial lawsociety.

For attorneys in the Western Cape call theCape Law Society at 021 443 6700 or call theLaw Society of South Africa at 012 366 8800.

Millions to fight abuseThe impact of women and child abuse onsocial wellbeing and our economy is stag-gering.

In a study conducted three years ago by theUniversityofKwaZulu-Natal, theaveragecostof each domestic violence incident wasR4 864,64 compared with an average monthlyincome of R3 393,28 re-sulting in a householddeficit of R1 471,36.

Aside from the mas-sive strain, caused byabsenteeism fromwork,Post Traumatic StressSyndrome (PTSD), de-pression or dissocia-tion, on an industry’sworkforce, the relianceon subsidised publichealthsystemsandserv-ices becomes even greater.

“Business can no longer sit back and donothing about an issue that not only affectscivilsociety, butoureconomyaswell.Wehaveto do more,” says George Grieve, managingdirector of Vital Health Foods, the companythat has leveraged its brand to focus on issuesrelated to women and child abuse.

Celebrating their first birthday this week, the Vital Foundation has achieved a target ofraising in excess of R3,9 million, largely be-cause of the overwhelming support they havereceived from the public following the initialR1makesadifferencecampaigninAugust lastyear. It is funded entirely by consumers of Vi-tal supplements; for every Vital supplementpack sold, R1 is donated to the Vital Founda-

tion.“The World Health Organisation (WHO)

classifies health as a state of complete physi-cal,mentalandsocialwellbeing,andnotmere-ly the absence of disease or infirmity, so theimperative is on us as a business, and againbusiness as awhole, to dowhatwe can for peo-ple on a mental and social level too,” com-

ments Grieve. With the rate of do-

mesticviolenceinSouthAfrica being among thehighest in the world, re-sulting in a workforceshaken by chronic fa-tigue; PTSD, depres-sion, sexually transmit-ted infections, loss ofconfidence as well asanxiety and stressaside from soaringmed-

are invited to apply for funding, during twofunding application cycles a year, these appli-cationsare thenpresented to theboardof trus-tees for funding allocation,” comments And-readuPlessis, spokespersonof theVitalFoun-dation.Organisations are encouraged to apply on-

Renovating your homeMore and more people are choosing to reno-vate rather than move. It’s less expensivethan purchasing a new house and renova-tions can help increase the value of yourhome.

If you’ve decided to renovate, your goal isto make changes that will modernise yourhome, make your spacemore functional andcomfortable, and improve the resale value ofyourproperty.Nothingfeelsbetter thancom-ing home every day to a place that suits yourtastes exactly and feels like home.

There’salsoagreatdeal toconsider.Beforeyou begin your renovations, you will wantto determine exactly what needs to be done, howmuch it will cost, andwhether you needto hire a contractor. If you decide that youwant to hire a contractor, you’ll want to findone you can trust. Ask the contractor for ref-erences or ask your friends to recommend

someone. Before you begin your renovationsItmaysurpriseyou to learn that significant

renovations may not be covered by your cur-rent home insurance policy. Home insuranceis designed to cover your home and its con-tents from the unexpected; however, everyhomeowner’s policy has limits. If you havea claim, you don’t want to find out your im-provements are not covered.

Toprotect yourself fromsurprises, here area few things to consider before you start yourrenovations:

Make sure your contractor has full liabilitycoverage for both individuals and materials.

If it’s a do-it-yourself renovation or onewhere you’re hiring tradespeople, ask yourco-operators agent to addabuilding construc-tion endorsement to cover events like theft, water damage, vandalism and glass breakagethat aren’t usually covered during renova-tions.When renovations are completedUpon completion of your home improve-

ment project, ask your agent to re-evaluateyour home to ensure the replacement valueis correct and officially documented.

Arenovation canbreathenew life intoyourhome; it’s like being in a new home withoutmoving. And you’ll enjoy the changes evenmoreknowingyourhomeisproperlyinsured.Formore information on insurance coveragefor your renovation, talk to your financial ad-visor.

Before and after.

Rules for electrical safetyTo play it safe around yourhome, justremembertherulesfor using electricity the rightway.1. Don’t plug a bunch of stuff

into one outlet or extensioncord. It could damage the elec-trical system in your house oreven cause a fire.2. Make sure all electric

cords are tucked away, neat and tidy. Petsmight chew on electrical cords, and peoplemight trip and fall.3. Don’t ever climb the fence around an elec-

trical substation. If a ball or pet gets inside thefence, ask a grown-up to call an electrical com-pany – they’ll come and get it out for you.4.Don’tyankanelectricalcord fromthewall.Pulling on a cord can damage the appliance,

the plug or the outlet.5. Fly your kite far away from power lines

or substations. Thekite and thestring may conduct electricity– sending it right through youto the ground.6. Ask a grown-up for help

when you need to use some-thing that uses electricity.7. Do look up and look out for

power lines before you climb atree. The electricity can go

right through the tree branch – and rightthrough you!8. Have a grown-up put safety caps on all un-

usedelectrical outlets.Coveringoutletswill al-so help save energy by stopping cold drafts.9. Watch out for power lines when they’re

using a ladder, chainsaw or other outdoorequipment.10. Keep electrical stuff far away fromwater. Most electrical accidents around the house
