The killing of Hong Kong tourists in Manila has caught the attention of all Chinese around the world. SAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang’s response to the incident has won the appreciation from the public with his popularity rating instantly boosted. 80,000 Hong Kong people from all backgrounds rallied in silent moaning and in representation of their sorrow and grievance. Yet the most touching story is a 5000-word article from one of the surviving hostage Li Ying Quan speaking out about her experience and reflection from her ordeal. (We have a special column reporting on this.)

Ms Li is a Social Science graduate from the Chinese University working on community building and publishing works. Her confession makes her a compassionate person who does not react negatively under subduing circumstance; in contrary, her encounter has prompted her to the needs of other people and the world. While on one hand she accuses the Philippine government in the poor handling of the situation but on the other she realises and sympathises the undesirable social dilemma of that country. As a person directly coming out from this situation she is remarkably courageous and merciful in moral terms.

Certainly on conclusion of the event we must take a good account of its cause and process in prevention of any recurrence. To give the victims and the affected families a better comfort, any person who should be held responsible and any system that needs to be revamped must be identified and followed up. Apart from these at the personal level, Ms Li has set a good example for us as to appreciate the deeper issues of the community and the world thus to reflect and respond positively with forgiveness; this is indeed a graceful side of humanity.

Upcoming would be more to be uncovered and investigated and the Philippine government has the obligation to account for the whole tragedy, amid of the disturbing reaction from Hong Kong people over a considerable span of time. But I do not want the incident be confined to pointing of fingers amongst government departments. All Hong Kong people have been deeply moved by the incident; we must come out from our self-pitying state and move on to re-build respectful relationships in selfless love.
