Last Saturday, all Qantas flights were grounded by the management in order to force the federal government to intervene the dispute with the unions on salary and working conditions. The whole world was shocked. Within 48 hours, over 10 thousands of Qantas passengers around the world were affected and the Qantas brand was tarnished, with faith on Qantas lost by most customers. Many thought that Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas had gambled too much and had neglected the interest of the Australia in making such a decision. Just days before, Alan had increased his own salary by 71% but planned to shed 1000 jobs from Qantas. The self-interest approach of Alan was criticized by many.

However, not all Australians would think that the grounding of Qantas was the fault of the management. The strong will of the union to put its interest ahead of others by jeopardising business operation through work stoppage had already caused great anger from small businesses. The high wage and lack of competitiveness have caused many to believe that the asking of better benefits is simply unrealistic.

Others believe that the labour government had overlooked the significance of the dispute between management and the union by little interference. It is seen by many as a lack of governing by the Prime Minister.

After the grounding, the government had forced the union to cancel all work stoppage, the negotiations between employers and employees had also been forced to continue, while at the same time, accept the arbitration from the independent third party. Nobody wins in this case. The difficulties for Qantas in maintaining the international operation under the high competition are well understood by many. It is the government policy that should also be reviewed in order to find a solution for this situation.

The grounding of Qantas has exposed that, if different parts of the community are all self interest to secure maximum benefits of their own, nobody will be a winner.
