For the coming Victoria state election, our magazine had sent questions to Mr. John Brumby, the Premier of Victoria, as well as Mr. Ted Baillieu, the Leader of the Victorian Opposition seeking their views on the election. In fact we were pleased that we were able to arrange a personal interview with Mr. Ted Baillieu, and we had the opportunity to let the Chinese communities understand his views in the special feature section in this week.

I have always supported the Chinese to participate in politics, and with the state election in Victoria to be held in November this year, and the state election in New South Wales that will be held in March next year, therefore there is an additional column called “Chinese participating in politics” starting from issue 209, by inviting readers and different Chinese leaders to express their point of views, in order to encourage our readers to understand and participate in local politics.

I believe if a political party has the real intention to support more Chinese to participate in politics, and letting the Parliament to have more ethnic minority members, these political parties should take the initiative in participating in the Chinese communities, to identify more high potential Chinese candidates, and in the political party’s self election, as this will provide the candidates a greater chance of winning a seat in the Parliament. For example, by placing candidates within electorates that have a greater chance of winning. The current State Member of Parliament Hong Lim will be a great example, in the past years Victorian Labor Party has assigned Hong Lim as the election candidate in the suburb of Clayton, one of the Labor Party’s winning suburbs, as result, Hong Lim often won the election. For Upper House candidates, the parties can be given a better rank in the candidate list.

In this state election, the leader of the Chinese communities Gladys Liu has been scheduled as the third candidate on the list of Liberal Party’s Upper House election. In the past years, Ms. Liu has been trained to get involved with the Victoria election as one of the candidates for the Liberal Party. Moreover, Ms. Liu has been actively involved with Chinese communities and introducing the political platform of Liberal Party, in order to raise the concern and participation of the politics for the Chinese. In light of this, I can see the sincere intention of the Liberal Party for the Chinese. Last Friday, the Labor Party has also introduced their Upper House election list, whilst the fourth candidate on the Eastern Metropolitan region is a Chinese, named Kelly Liu, who will be going against Gladys Liu. From last Friday until this Wednesday, we are unable to contact Kelly, even through Labor Party officials.

As stated previously, I support the Chinese in participating in politics regardless of the political party they are from, because they often have to pay more effort and expense, and at the same time, it is difficult for them to be recognized by the voters and gain their support from the mainstream society. Whilst in the Chinese communities, we will take the initiative to understand the background of the Chinese candidates. For a candidate to announce just two weeks before election and fails to introduce herself and her political views to Chinese media, I can only conclude that this is just a game to secure more votes from Chinese only.

I call on all the political parties, if you are supporting Chinese to participate in politics, please show us more sincerity and make some more effort in Chinese communities in a long term perspective.
