The Federal Government has been encouraging immigrants to settle in South Australia with a view to boost the relative low population there. Hence over the recent years the influx of Chinese immigrants has made the Adelaide Chinatown right next to the commercial centre a very popular spot for tourists. The settlement of Chinese at the city centre has indeed upheld multiculturalism in South Australia.

Lately the SA government has established the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) and has published the redevelopment plan for Adelaide; but that has raised much concern from the Chinese community because Moonta Street (Chinatown) has not been included for redevelopment as a tourist hot spot. Comparing to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Adelaide seems to be a quieter capital city with a European feel; for example Hahndorf is a German-village in the vicinity of the city attracting many tourists. Actually the SA government has been missing out by not promoting the Chinatown in the city centre as a State tourism hot spot.

With the growing number of Chinese immigrants in Adelaide, Chinese tourists are coming in big numbers and the Chinatown is their top visiting spot given the convenience of language; many other foreign tourists also find the Chinese culture and delicious food there very appealing. Starting from this year, the various activities of the Friday night bazaar held at the Chinatown has also attracted many local and foreign visitors.

I believe more and more Chinese tourists are coming into Australia; the SA government should allocate more resources to help develop the Chinatown into a premier tourism location. At least there should be more infrastructures such as street lights, tourist information centre and more joint ventures with the Chinatown community to organise activities targeting tourists.

The Chinese community should also make an effort to solicit support from the governments at different levels to transform the Chinatown into a vivid commercial, entertaining and tourism centre, thus bringing new life and opportunities to the local Chinese community. Through my interview with the former Adelaide Mayor Mr Alfred Huang, I realised his great contribution in leading the Chinese community into the main stream society over the years since he settled in Adelaide. I hope there are more Chinese in Adelaide who would act as Mr Huang by contributing themselves for their local community.
