It is another major breakthrough of the “I”-series from Hyundai. Thomas Burkle the chief designer from Hyundai’s European Design centre in Russelsheim, Germany hosted the design briefing at the Australian launch of the charming i40 to the eagerly awaiting Australian media in Yarra Valley on 12 October 2011.
Hyundai has been seen as a reliable, robust and affordable product in recent years. It is also one of the fastest growing motor companies in the world, currently ranking number 5. Several changes in the design language, that can be seen from the i45 and ix35, have effectively convinced the world that Hyundai could also be seen as a top motoring fashion design. The strong sales of the “i-45 and ix35” in Europe and North America energises the design team of Hyundai to passionately create vehicles that carries quality, prestige flair and embrace a unique form of modern art. Moreover, Hyundai gradually becomes one of the leaders in motoring body design.

‘i40’ adopted the same idea of i45 and ix35, Thomas stressed its presentation as the fluidic sculpture. Something, the design team in Europe gets their inspiration from just about anything such as wind, water, leaves, seed and mainly from the nature.
The i40 explores a unique eagle eyed headlights with cleverly designed LED daytime running lights, that become the focus of i40. It matches a Hyundai corporate signature of a hexagon grille that stemmed out from the compact SUV ix35 and further perfected it. The results are refreshing, the car comes with harmonious lines, flowing surfaces and curves that only a company that is interested in breaking boring design rules will spare no expense to bring it into life.
The i40 gives a striking on-road presence. More importantly a trusted emotion from what Hyundai has already been achieved. Obviously, Thomas Burkle

was a former designer from BMW, will have no trouble at all to present the i40 as a stunning piece of art. The i40 has a mission to complete. It is sitting nicely, slightly smaller than the i45, but gives its owner a special aerodynamic sport wagon convenience complimented with a uniqueness in dynamic motoring and vibrancy in life.
Not only, has it been dressed in sleekish style, it is both powerful and practical. It has two engines and two gearboxes for people to consider. With its 100kW power & 330Nm of torque from its common railed direct injected all-new 1.7-litre U-II CRDi diesel engine, it returns an amazing result of 4.7 litre/100kms of combined city and highway travelling. That amazing record can virtually be transformed as a long distance travel range of over 1,489kms with just one tank of diesel fuel. In addition, it also earned a 5 stars ANCAP ratings for its passive safety credential.
How does it drive like?The new i40 is fun to drive, a little bit spicy and full of positive emotion. I drove the petrol version around Healesville and Yarra Valley area. It is everything that you will expect from a European design studio. It gave me a feeling that the i40 is well built with solidity and firm suspension, while still taking care about ride comfort for our unique Australian road condition. The steering is nice, powered by an electric motor, it is precise and well weighted.
Inside the car, the interior is spacious, generous front leg and shoulder room. I like the speedometer. It uses a 4K high resolution monitor, text, pictures and all the vital information are crystal clear.

One special thing that I like about this car is its use of electronic park brake. It saves space for the central console. As for the fun of driving, the paddle shifts at the back of the steering wheel are so easy to use. The in-house designed 6 speed automatic gear box matches the power and torque of the car, that it works seamlessly just like a piece of precision clockwork. I enjoy the ride and the beautiful scenery of the Yarra Valley.
As for the active safety features, I learn that it consist of a newly developed Corner Braking Control, that helps to regulate any undesired movements such as oversteer or understeer. Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system that look after an array of other safety function such as ESC, TCS, ABS and EBD to help maintain vehicle control by applying a variable input to steering weight, helping prevent the vehicle losing control in emergency situations. Personally speaking, the system is not intrusive in intervening my steering, but surely, it will definitely help anyone to maintain on the right direction, stability and prevent 99% of accident.
Surprisingly, I think there must be a race for the highest number of airbags inside a car, the i40 employs 9 airbags as well as active anti-whiplash headrests for the driver and front passenger. Another interesting topic is the use of highly responsive flashing brake light when come across an emergency or sudden braking. This will sure help getting people’s attention to stay away from a possible collision scenario.
Driving around Yarra Valley is a bliss for this lovely car, the build and drive quality are both world class, one minor point for the designer to pick up, was the use of rather bulky “D” pillar. On the positive side, its construction was
inspired by capturing from an old Asian architecture, the intension; design and craftsmanship were was highly commendable. On the other hand, the equally clever use of reverse monitor on the central rear vision mirror and parking sensor will certainly vindicate the minor blind spot issue.
I have no doubt that the i40 will receive warm welcome from the community. Price starts from $32,940 manual for the “Active” to $46,490 for the Premium “Elite” auto for just $46,490.
